Sorry I was 20m over but that's still an absurd amount. And considering you're going to have to spend even more to get this squad anywhere near the heights it used to be is a joke to be honest.

I agree with you re: Shaw however, it was a wise investment considering how young he is and the huge potential he has. It's pretty much the equivalent of paying £3m a season for him and it isn't that bad really.

I don't really think we need to spend that much, £60-£70m on a centre back, centre midfielder (unless Hererra can cement his place) and winger (probably/hopefully Depay). Rooney back up front and Nani back from loan. A new right back if rafael can't get back into the side, too.

I'd rather we didn't make a ton of signings and just improved on what we've got, its clear that the upheaval of last summer (new manager, new players, lots of players leaving etc...) set us back as players gelled in and settled and doing it all again this summer is not ideal.

It's not a case of needing players, really, its about getting the best out of the players we've got.

I suppose. But that's still essentially buying a new squad, I can see why it would seem better than City/Chelsea buying the League (already established club, own funds well sort of) but it seems the same. It seems like the only youngsters being blooded in are Januzaj & Wilson, I don't think Blackett/McNair would've got a look in if you done what you should've last summer.

It's almost as if United are losing their identity, it's pretty much become what Chelsea & City have become symbols of. But I guess that's the fallout of Ferguson leaving.

I don't see how its really a legitimate criticism. We've got 3 players who are ready for game time in the first time, Januzaj, McNair and Wilson, and they're getting regular game time. If anything, I think Wilson and McNair probably aren't quite as ready as they should be.

It's just at the stage now where if you're not making 2-3 additions to your first team every season then you fall behind because everyone else is. City are as good an example of that as anyone. Spending £60-£70m in a transfer window just isn't unusual for any big club, teams are spending that on individual players now.

Yeah but it's not just the lack of academy players coming through either, cause United have been big spenders for as far as I remembered. The fabled pressing based style of football has gone. Sure it wasn't as pretty as what we played for example, but it was above all exciting. The Ronaldo & Rooney goals in the CL & Prem against Arsenal were pure brilliance, and I don't think with the amount of quality up front you possess now that it's possible with someone like Van Gaal in charge.

Even if you got shown a United team when they didn't win the League under Fergie compared to now it looks like two completely different clubs. But I guess everything has to come to an end at some point.

Pretty sure Utd spent 150m this season, not 200m or 180m.

When you consider Liverpool spent 120m and Arsenal about 90m it's hardly ridiculous. Everyone knew there squad needed rebuilding and it would cost a fair bit.

Shaw will be a good signing and as said, potentially there left back for the next 10-15 years. 30m could be a bargain.

Rojo, Blind and Hererra have been decent signings and Di Maria has shown a lot but will just take a bit more time to get used to the league, injuries haven't helped him either. 10 assists and 3 goals in 16 starts is hardly terrible. Fucking awful at corners though.

Falcao being shit and RVP losing all form is what's hurt the most. The reason Van Gaal is getting more time than Moyes is that he inherited a squad that was fucked with no morale and has rebuilt it, I think people really underestimate how difficult it is to get so many new players (Almost all from overseas) to gel, it's going to take time. Moyes inherited a good squad that just won the league and he made no changes to it, you don't go from champions to shit in 3 months. It was his responsibility to get new players if he felt he needed them.

When I saw the team yesterday it was the first time in the last 12-18 months that I thought it actually looked strong. Given time and a consistent starting 11 it will come good.

When you look at Shaw over 10 years, sure it seems like a good investment (transfer fee wise). However, you could dispute any transfer of a similar nature using a similar argument. On the flip side of it, there's also no guarantee he'll be there for that long, let alone beyond his current contact. If United continue to struggle like they have the last two seasons, continue to finish outside of the Champions League positions, then there's a genuine chance he may even leave. Then there is the factor of having to pay him an absurd contact whenever it comes time to renewing his current one, because of what he's been given to entice him to the club to begin with. There's certainly a potential downside to his transfer too.

He hasn't been a bad signing though, just not worth what has initially been paid. Time will only tell if it's a good deal or not.

I highly doubt we've paid Southampton an upfront fee of £30 million. It's probably more something in the region of £15-£20 million up front with the rest in add ons. It's not a bad deal for us really given his age and ability. Those potential downsides to his transfer are the same with any transfer, Di Maria, Blind and Herrera could all want away within a season or two if we don't make the Champions League or start challenging for the league title.

And it's a realistic concern to have and one that does need to be taken into consideration. If the situation arose where they all started to want out the club would be struggling to get their money back on some players if they're knowingly unsettled. Having just taken a look at United's run in, they've got quite a challenging finish to the season. If they miss out on the Champions League again this season, next year the pressure is really going to be on. I can't see some players wanting to stay if the club struggle again next season too.

It isn't really that big a concern tbh as Blind signed for 4 years, Di Maria for 5 years, Herrera for 4 years and Shaw for 4 years with an option for a further year. Even if one or two wanted to leave after next season the club would be in the favourable position, we'll only sell if we get the fee we want. The players are stuck for a large chunk of time unless a club is willing to pay what we want for them.

Any manager that came into the job straight after Fergie left would've had a tough time. Rooney was poor, van Persie was on the decline already, Vidic & Ferdinand left. Van Gaal wouldn't have done any better than Moyes last season.

Well yes, but that's true of literally every transfer in the history of football. Even in the unlikely scenario that everything you said turns out true he still won't have been that bad a signing compared some other £30m+ transfers.

I absolutely adore Juan Mata.

Also reading how happy he was after his Liverpool performance makes me love him even more.

@Sam (and a bit Kevo, but I know how much Sam loves him)

After our third goal on saturday Mata ran forwards and celebrated in front of the Strety. I was sat in the front row literally 2 metres away from him, I nearly swooned.

I hate you a little bit right now

Would love to live in Manchester for just a year so I could frequently go to games at Old Trafford.

Best manager's speech ever.

New contract for Jones, 2019.

I don't know what warranted that, he's been getting worse each season tbh. Still only 23, so he's got time on his side.

Big Dunc.

I saw somebody call him a 2015 John O'Shea recently (utility man), which is a shame but seems to be accurate from what I've seen. It's a shame because he really was excellent here (I thought he'd be England captain by now and first choice CB) but he doesn't seem to have improved, moving from position to position at United.

There's still time for him, especially as a defender. Still easily got 10+ years and on his day he is very very good. Unfortunately he seems to be as inconsistent as Evans has always been and that is a huge problem. Definitely heading the way of O'Shea as things stand, though admittedly more talented.

Yeah him, Smalling, Evans and Rafael have been awful for it. Even Rojo and Shaw were out for a bunch of last season. Feels like Evra is the only defender we've had in the last few years that has been able to stay fit

Smalling is better than Jones - if you sign Ramos he'll not get a look in.

Yeah you're right.

His only hope would be we don't sign a proper right back, sell Rafael and Valencia isn't played there.

Not sure what to make of the Ramos rumours. I suppose he's won everything at Madrid and maybe he's thinking of a new experience/challenge at United and also more money as well.

Why are Utd so bad at selling players?

RVP, Nani and now Rafael all for 2-3m each.

The like of Robbie Brady and James Chester are going for about 8m.

I must have just sat there and watched that Rafael goal vs QPR gif about 15 times. I love those types of goals, probably my favourites.
