Hi guys,
this time I decided to emulate Simone Inzaghi's 3-5-2 tactic, the tactic that allowed Inter Milan to win their 20th Serie A title. With this tactic I won the Italian treble (Serie A, Italian Cup, Super Cup) but could not get past of Manchester City in UEFA Champions League Quarter Final after two difficult matches.
I created a very dominant tactic, but also extremely solid in defense, scored 115 goals (best serie A attack) and allowed only 15 (best defense in Serie A), as always, without buying and selling any players and playing all the games except pre-season friendlies. I never go on holiday mode because I want to see if my players play exactly the way I want (or better, the way Inzaghi wants in this case) so I watch all the games one by one and try to understand what does not work and try to adjust it but always respecting the manager's tactic style.
Here a brief analysis of Inzaghi's 3-5-2
Build-up Strategies
At the heart of Inzaghi's tactical approach lies a meticulous build-up strategy designed to facilitate fluid ball progression while maintaining defensive stability. Operating within a 3-1-5-2 formation during low build-up phases, Inter’s central center-back assumes a pivotal role, orchestrating play from deep while the goalkeeper strategically positions amidst the remaining center-backs to provide an additional passing option.
Navigating Opposition Pressure
One of Inzaghi's tactical innovations lies in Inter’s adeptness at exploiting space vacated by pressing opponents. Through a tactic known as ‘follow pressure,’ Inter players capitalize on gaps left behind by pressing fullbacks, particularly in scenarios where wing-backs are engaged in offensive duties. This strategic maneuver allows Inter to create numerical superiority in key areas of the pitch, exemplified by instances where the Juventus center-back advances, leaving space behind for Inter to exploit with precision passing.
Elevated Build-up Strategy
Transitioning seamlessly into the elevated build-up phase, Inzaghi’s tactical blueprint retains its fluidity, albeit with slight adjustments to accommodate offensive impetus. Employing a 1-3-1-4-2 formation akin to the low build-up, Inter maintains a compact defensive structure while affording greater freedom for midfielders to push forward in support of attacking maneuvers.
Integration of Center-backs in Attack
A hallmark of Inter’s attacking prowess under Inzaghi lies in the seamless integration of center-backs into offensive forays. Displaying tactical astuteness, Inter’s wide center-backs frequently make incisive underlapping runs, thereby confounding opposing defenses and augmenting unpredictability in the final third.
Collaborative Striker Dynamics
Central to Inter’s successful build-up play is the symbiotic partnership and cohesive teamwork among strikers. Employing a strategic blend of verticality and positional interchangeability, Inter’s forwards manipulate opposing defensive lines, creating space for penetrating passes and incisive through-balls. This dynamic striker partnership not only destabilizes opposing defenses but also ensures that Inter maintains a constant threat in the attacking third.
Defensive Strategies
Low Press
In defensive phases, Inzaghi adopts a pragmatic approach characterized by a compact defensive block. Operating within a 1-5-3-2 formation, Inter seeks to limit space in central areas while forcing opponents wide, thereby minimizing the risk of incisive through passes and central penetration.
Squeezing the Pitch
A cornerstone of Inzaghi’s defensive philosophy is the concept of ‘squeezing the pitch,’ wherein Inter looks to compress the playing area during defensive transitions. By applying strategic pressure on the ball carrier and maintaining compact defensive lines, Inter effectively restricts the opponent’s ability to exploit space and create goal-scoring opportunities.
High Press
In scenarios where high-pressing tactics are warranted, Inzaghi instructs his team to adopt a man-to-man marking scheme, thereby suffocating opponents in possession and forcing turnovers in advanced areas. This aggressive pressing style not only disrupts the opponent's build-up play but also allows Inter to regain possession quickly and launch swift counterattacks.
Transitional Play
Defensive Transitions
Central to Inzaghi’s tactical ethos is the emphasis on rapid defensive transitions, wherein Inter seeks to regain possession immediately after losing the ball. By positioning many players centrally and maintaining numerical superiority in midfield, Inter effectively stifles opponent attacks and minimizes the threat of counterattacks.
