Why are people assuming Spurs haven't already spent most of the Bale money. Soldado, Chadli and Paulinho = roughly £50m.

Besides even if Spurs to sell Bale for £80m, or whatever, what are they going to do with it? - It's not like they can just go out and buy Modric, Fabregas and Lewandowski with it. They'll probably end up buying someone like Benteke for a inflated fee or something.

I think it's just brinkmanship.

He has a year left on his deal and has fallen out with Lyon, so I think Newcastle will assume Lyon will drop their price, (which does seem far too high). Plus it would surely benefit Lyon to offload Gomis to Newcastle rather than Marseille. Due to them probably being rivals for the last CL spot, if Monaco and PSG take the first two places.

- I'd imagine Bolton would be the favourites. Dougie Freedman actually took more points than Cardiff last year iirc.
- Watford depending on how good their new crop of players are.
- I think Reading would be a good shout - Adkins seems pretty good and they'll retain pretty much the same squad that went up two seasons ago.
- Leicester and Forest should challenge. (Extremely surprised Pearson is still there)
- Brighton depending on how quickly their new coach settles.
- Wigan haven't lost too many and have made replacements, so should still have a good chance

- I rate Redknapp as a coach, but I reckon QPR still look a mess and I don't think his heart looks in it, can see him resigning or something by December.

But practically any team can get out of the division with a bit of luck, it's extremely hard to predict division. I wouldn't have though Hull, Palace or Watford would be anywhere near the top last year.

Assume all transfer news as bollocks. Or ignore it completely. I find it extremely annoying, when people talk about being 'beaten to targets' when Newcastle probably weren't interested anyway. - Or weren't willing to pay the asking price.

Squad that finished 5th, less Guthrie, Best, Smith, Lovenkrands, Ranger, Ba, Perch, Simpson and Harper

+ Sissoko, Haidara, Gouffran, Yanga-Mbiwa, Debuchy, Anita and Bigirimana, Plus massive improvements from Elliot, and hopefully a fit HBA. + a few younger players who might step up, and Ferguson, Vuckic and Ameobi being a couple of years older.

Newcastle have generally improved the squad over the past year. Best, Smith, Lovenkrands and Harper left because they weren't going to get much game time, Ranger was unlikely to amount to much and Newcastle replaced Guthrie and Simpson with Dutch and French internationals.

I'm still annoyed at getting rid of Perch though. Aaron Hughes mk II.

If Newcastle survived last year and brought in the five January transfers in July, people would be super excited for the new season.

An unexpected but welcome guest at the wedding reception of Paul and Janene on Saturday night was Newcastle midfielder Gael Bigirimana.

The youngster isn't involved in United's Portuguese training camp after close season international duty for England U20s, but was spotted doing some solo training on Tynemouth beach adjacent to the reception venue.

Bigi willingly posed for photos with the happy couple and stayed at the reception for an hour, mingling with other guests and signing autographs. Top lad

This is potentially shocking by Newcastle, if we are forcing him to train by himself because he refuses to wear a logo on religious grounds then, it sounds like racial discrimination. Hope it's just bullshit, or he's not travelling because of Ramadan or something.

Manchester United players should really boycott Manchester United, until it ends its commercial deals with the betting and alcohol companies. And your sponsored by Nike ffs. I'm sure Manchester United have done a full social audit on all of your sponsors to determine they are all ethical.

Bolt is the only guy I'd assume was clean. He seems for of a freak of nature than an athlete.

I am a bit scared of the Fuentes thing invading football, and Spain and Barcelona's domination being explained by doping. Although, I wouldn't think doping would help Xavi too much.

I don't get why no one seems interested in Nathan Redmond. Looks a good player and a £2m initial fee rising to £3.2m. Reckon Norwich have got an absolute steal.

Especially with Tom Ince being touted around £8m
