I'm guessing you've read Tor!? That's what I'm reading at the moment, only a third of the way through, but it's good so far.

Are the A Game of Thrones books good? Finally got around to watching the TV programme. And just wondering if they're worth a read, I've never read any sort of fantasy books before.

The trick is to watch Paul Blart: Mall Cop first. Next to that Observe and Report feels like the Citizen Kane of mall security based films.

I've seen Paul Blart: Mall Cop, it's a bad film, but it's fairly unoffensive, where as Observe and Report just made me feel sad.

I can't really explain. You know how sometimes after an episode of Breaking Bad or The Sopranos you can sort of feel emotionally drained? A bit like that but different and in a worse way. And it's not funny.

You need to watch a lot more films then.

What did you like about it?

I just think it absolutely no positive qualities whatsoever.

Of course Giroud and Walcott have a right to celebrate. It's more just the length and elaborateness of the celebration that was annoying.

Begovic

Zabaleta - Shawcross - Bassong

Diame - Mulumbu

Mata - Fellaini - Bale

Suarez - Michu

Manager: Chris Hughton
Assistant: Steve Clarke

Why has the 3-2-3-2 not caught on? Combines the best aspects of the 3-5-2 and the 4-3-2-1. Five defensive players, midfield triangle, room for three creative players, two wingers and a strike partnership.

No Newcastle player deserves to be anyway near that team unfortunately.

Yeah he did the cradle thing didn't he? It's not that he celebrated it's that it lasted about five minutes each for two fairly meaningless goals. I'm sure if someone did that to you on FIFA you would be raging.

I heard the transfer clause was £7.5m with Ba set to get £2.5m of that. With presumably a lot of that money going to agents/advisors. The expenses of the deal explaing why no club would buy him in the summer.

Anyway I can't stand any Newcastle fans who will inevitably complain about Ba's lack of loyalty (where was his loyalty to Hoffenheim or West Ham?) and are delighted we can get rid of Danny Simpson.

Newcastle are the stupid ones for allowing such a low buy out clause really.

Newcastle apparently allowed the release clause because they refused to pay massive wages or a massive signing on fee or something. Apparently he gets quite a lot of the transfer fee as well. He signed on a free though, so Newcastle haven't really lost anything, just gained a very good striker for 18 months.

Ba will also be a much more expensive signing than just £7.5m, apparently he's demanding £80k-90k p/w. Plus big agent fees and he will be expensive to insure. And obviously has the potential to just break down.

Of course I'm annoyed, but there still is somewhat of an unwritten rule that there is no need to rub salt in the wounds etc, by excessively celebrating. Unless of course you're a team desperate to distract from the fact they've already out the title race before the new year.

Giroud is a cunt. I hate players who try and get other players sent off. Same goes for when Nasri headbutted Bassong and a Norwich player ran off th tell the referee, while Kompany tried to diffuse the situation.

Arsenal also did some spectacular celebrating of meaningless goals. No need for a five minute celebration when the score is 7-3.

I'd agree that he's had some success in previous jobs but considering his spells at his previous two clubs, which were both deemed to be failures, I find it surprising that a club with pretty lofty ambitions have gone in for him. He might have more success in the Championship but I think given his performance with Birmingham and Aston Villa, as well as his unimaginative and dour playing style, Forest fans have every right to be a tad pissed.

Yeah I reckon Forest would have better off going for a younger manager rather than one of the old guard. Someone like Freedman or Chris Powell. That said McLeish did get Birmingham promoted and Steve Bruce is doing very well with Hull. I had a feeling they were going to go for Clough.

I reckon McLeish is unlucky to have his reputation. His track record isn't awful.

His spells at Motherwell and Hibs look decent. Won a few titles with Rangers. Pretty decent spell with Scotland. His Aston Villa side was absolutely awful but he didn't do any worse than Houllier, McCallister or Lambert. His spell at Birmingham was obviously very mixed with two relegations, a promotion and an excellent top flight season, (finishing higher than Swansea and Norwich did last year, with more points). But in his defence I don't think he had much money at Villa or Birmingham.

Still definately wouldn't want him at Newcastle though.

I read in the Sunday Times a few weeks ago that Txiki Begiristain and Soriano were planning to revamp the sqad and get rid of a few. Lescott was mentioned and I think Milner and possibly Barry.

Something about buying 'mid-range' players and developing them around a core of world class players. Used Yaya Toure as an example, How Barcelona bought him fairly cheaply to fit around Xavi, Messi and Iniesta.

How can you say that and then spend the next part of this thread arguing about a law you've shown you don't understand?

Nah.

The law as it is allows the game to flow well, there's many times in moves when players are in offside positions but inactive in one phase but onside and active in the next. Reverting to a law like that would lead to at least double the stoppages for offisde, and that's a waste of everyones time.

Here's a little diagram on interpretation of the law, which indicates that Dean was incorrect.

The bit about Evans holding Ba or vica/versa is also a stupid debate, if Ba wasn't standing in a offside posistion Evans couldn't be holding him therefore his being in that posistion is clearly inferring with Evans.

You don't understand the offside law.

From his excellent central position, referee Mike Dean saw Cisse had not touched the ball, which he must do to be considered to be ‘interfering with play’ as the law requires.
For the goal to have been disallowed for offside, the Newcastle striker would have had to be deemed to be interfering with an opponent. This is nothing to do with affecting his positioning or making him play the ball. In this case it would have been standing in the line of vision between keeper David de Gea and the ball as Simpson crossed it.

Here's a little diagram to show that Dean was correct.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/12/26/article-2253498-16A91DA0000005DC-235_468x334.jpg

So, unless a player touches the ball he is not interfering with play. It’s that simple and whether referees or assistants agree with that definition is irrelevant, they have to apply the law. Moreover, whether you or managers or pundits like it, that is how FIFA insist the offside law is applied.

Standing in an offside posistion isn't deemed to be interfering. I think distractions are things like when Bolton used to put people on the goaline to distract the GK when taking free kicks. Not having your shirt pulled.

Besided Jonny Evans and Hernandez both came back from an offiside posision to score their goals, are you honestly saying they weren't distracting the defenders/gaining an advantage?

The point of the law is to give the advantage to attackers and to create more goals.

Cisse isn't interfering under the current offside law. Shearer was 100% correct. The point of the current law is to give attackers the advantage.

And that article was embarrising. Shearer says Spain are good team and is shocked people find them boring. DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT. I think Shearer probably meant that Balotelli needs to become a world class player rather than just acting like one. It's looking unlikely at the moment, that he will live upto his potential.

Yeah, the goal should have stood, Cisse under the current law didn't interfere. Shearer's analysis was 100% correct.

Obviously it's easier to just to pretend that the pundits are being biased against you and that the offside law is different to what it is.

Deluded

Ferguson's was a campaign against the officials to try and intimidate the officials to give his side some decisions. John Carver shouldn't have done it but it was because an awful tackle had just broken a Newcastle player's leg. And decisions did seem to go Manchester United's way in the second half, probably just a coincidence.

How can anyone not think Cisse is interfering with play?

I agree that he was interfering and imo it should have been disallowed. But these days you seem to actually need to touch the ball to be considered active. In fairness Hernandez and Evans definately gained an advantage by standing in an offside posistions just before they scored.

How was Valencia's tackle not shown? Shoulld have been a straigt red.

Also, Newcastle fans booing the Ameobi/Cisse substitution and then going on to win was perfect after Shola saying booing negatively affects performances last week. He took his goal very well.

QPR did the same as well, booing the Cisse/Hoilett sub.

God knows what they were booing anyway, Cisse didn't look like scoring and Shola and Obertan changed the game. But yeah booing subs is moronic, especially when Cisse and Jonas weren't having good games. Shola to his credit didn't let it get to him, probably because he's had to endure it for years.

By Number 1 | Permalink | On 23 December 2012 - 00:10 AM
This is guessing from Tweets I saw from Newcastle fans at the match but by the looks of it the boos were for hooking Cisse rather than Shola's arrival, with the common view being that Demba Ba should have been hooked.

I'm not sure how accurate this is but there does seem to be a growing number of fans that think Ba is harming our chances as much as helping them.

You mean with the transfer saga or his performances in general? If it is on performances then they are probably just lying to themselves blaming a player they expect to leave for problems. I still don't expect Ba to leave, but if a deal is done, he is still giving 100% and is one of the better players in the team every game.
