Fulham have secured 20 year old Manchester United striker Federico Macheda on a season long loan with the intention of making the move permanent at the end of the season should the Italian impress.

Macheda, 20, burst onto the scene at Old Trafford back in 2009 when he scored a stunning winner against Aston Villa deep into injury time to send United back to the top of the Barclays Premier League table ahead of fierce rivals Liverpool.

The striker has endured a frustrating time since with unsuccessful loan spells at Sampdoria and Queens Park Rangers.

Fulham will have to pay £3 million if they choose to make the move permanent according to reports.

In other news Tom Thorpe and Sam Johnstone have left Old Trafford for Blackpool and Crewe Alexandra in permanent deals, the pair allowed to move on under new manager David Moyes. There have also been more loan moves for some of United's younger players as Larnell Cole, Davide Petrucci, Bébé and Ángelo Henríquez have all departed on season long loan deals.

I think part of it for me is that I'm older, I don't get that same buzz I did when I was 17 or 18, but it's still a fantastic game that I can play more than any other I've ever picked up.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has as expected appointed former Everton colleagues Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Wood as his assistant manager, coach and goalkeeping coach respectively.

The trio have been appointed following the departures of Mike Phelan, René Meulensteen and Eric Steele. Many believed the new Manchester United manager would look to appoint his own backroom staff after he replaced the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson and that proved to be the case, the 49 year old Scot informing Phelan, Meulensteen and Steele that their services wouldn't be required any longer following his first training session on Monday.

Round had worked with Moyes as his assistant manager at Everton for four years and has signed a five year deal at Old Trafford. The 41 year old had previous spells coaching at Derby Country, Middlesbrough, England and Newcastle United before becoming the assistant manager at Goodison Park back in 2008. New coach Jimmy Lumsden had been at Goodison Park for over a decade and he has also signed a five year deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2017.

Moyes has appointed Chris Wood, not pictured above, as the new goalkeeping coach following the departure of Eric Steele, the current United States goalkeeping coach had been at Goodison Park before Moyes was even appointed. The 52 year old has also signed a five year deal. It's believed Manchester United have paid Everton between £450,000 and £625,000 in compensation following the trios departure from the Merseyside club who are reportedly pursuing Fulham manager Martin Jol.

United step up their pre-season preparations in just six days when they play Scottish side Dundee at Dens Park Stadium in their opening pre-season friendly. They'll also face St. Mirren and Ross County before hosting Portuguese side Benfica at Old Trafford. United will then finish their pre-season commitments with a friendly against Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

Moyes will take charge in his first competitive fixture as the new Manchester United boss against fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City on the opening day of the season at the Etihad Stadium.

We had a 20 year old from our rugby league team take his life last week. On sunday we had a big day dedicated to him but mainly his family, took donations for them and other things and a heap from our club are going to his funeral. It hit me harder seeing his sister burst into tears walking through our tunnel then it did actually hearing he took his own life.

I find it unfair on the family mostly.

It's personally a really tough subject for me. I don't think people should label people who take their lives as cowards or selfish, although I'm fully aware of the impact a suicide has on a family. A friend of mine did it almost 4 years ago and it's quite traumatic seeing family members and other friends post on her Facebook and I've even flicked through some old conversations thinking what types of things she should be doing now, going to university, travelling around the world, getting married even. From personal experience at work there is still a massive problem with stigma and discrimination towards people with mental illness, especially depression and there needs to be a change of attitude towards that to stop suicides rising.

David Moyes has terminated the contracts of assistant manager Mike Phelan, coach René Meulensteen and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele following his first training session as the new Manchester United manager.

The Scot took charge of his first training session today since being named as the new Manchester United manager at the clubs state of the art Carrington training complex and the 49 year old has already rung the changes as assistant manager Mike Phelan, coach René Meulensteen and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele were all released from their contracts.

There had been rumours that Moyes would make changes so some of his backroom staff at Everton could join him at Old Trafford and it now appears likely that Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Woods will be approached by the Red Devils.

Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele has also left Old Trafford

Assistant manager Mike Phelan had been at the club since 2001, firstly as a coach before becoming Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant manager in 2008. The former England international had played under Ferguson making 102 league appearances.

Meulensteen, had two separate spells at Old Trafford, the Dutchman first joining back in 2001 before rejoining the club in 2007 after a short stint as manager at Danish club Brøndby IF. Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele joined the club back in 2008 and was heavily involved in the scouting of current shot stopper David De Gea following the retirement of Edwin van der Sar.

The Red Devils begin their pre-season schedule in eight days when they take on Scottish side Dundee at Dens Park Stadium.

Moyes will take charge in his first competitive fixture as the new Manchester United boss against fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City on the opening day of the season at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester United have confirmed on their official website the appointment of former Everton boss David Moyes as their new manager on a six year deal following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United have today appointed a new manager for the first time since the inception of the Barclays Premier League, former Preston North End and Everton boss David Moyes named as the successor to the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson, the 49 year old signing a six year deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until at least the summer of 2018.

The 49 year old spent more than a decade at Everton and consistently kept the Merseyside club in the top half of the Barclays Premier League table whilst challenging for European football with limited funds at his disposal.

It's expected Everton will approach either Fulham or Wigan Athletic in the coming days in relation to opening negotiations with Martin Jol or Roberto Martínez who are the early favourites to replace the outgoing Moyes at Goodison Park.

David Moyes is the new Manchester United manager

Moyes will take charge of his first training session as the new United manager on Monday morning at the clubs state of the art Carrington training complex. Reports suggest the new United boss will also speak to current assistant manager Mike Phelan, coach René Meulensteen and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele about their futures on his first day in charge, some believing the Scot will look to make changes and bring in his own backroom staff from previous club Everton in the coming days.

The Scots first competitive and Barclays Premier League fixture as the new Manchester United boss could prove to be a baptism under fire as the Red Devils travel to the Etihad Stadium on the opening day of the season to face fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City.

United step up their pre-season preparations in just 10 days when they play Scottish side Dundee at Dens Park Stadium in their opening pre-season friendly. Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs says senior players at Old Trafford will offer support to whoever is appointed as the new manager following the unexpected retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this month.

Whoever replaces Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager can count on the senior players at Old Trafford for support says veteran winger Ryan Giggs. The 38 year old has made an astonishing 598 Barclays Premier League appearances scoring 106 times for United since making his debut against Everton back in 1991 before the Barclays Premier League even existed.

"The senior players are all excited waiting for the new manager to be chosen. I'm sure many people believe we have some inside scoop about proceedings, but we don't, we hear bits and pieces through the media, we've heard nothing about the new manager from the board and it's just a waiting game for us," revealed the former Welsh international.

"When the new manager is announced I'm sure the board will choose the right person. It's almost an impossible job to follow Sir Alex Ferguson and whilst we're disappointed he's retired we realise nobody can go on forever. Whoever comes in will have the full support of the players and the senior lads like myself can offer some support," added Giggs.

Giggs made his debut for Wales back in 1991 against West Germany and the 38 year old went on to score 12 goals for his country making a further 63 international appearances before announcing his international retirement in 2007.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has revealed that the club have been in contact with a potential candidate to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford and an appointment could be near.

A potential successor to retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson could be named within days after chief executive David Gill revealed that the club had been in discussions with a candidate.

"As a club we've had some discussions with potential candidates and have been impressed by the candidates," says Gill.

"However as you'd expect we've had to choose who we believe will be the best fit for Manchester United. We're currently speaking to a potential candidate and an appointment may occur soon," added the Manchester United chief executive.

When asked if David Moyes was the candidate the club were in discussions with the Manchester United chief executive remained tight lipped and refused to comment on the speculation linking the Everton manager with the Old Trafford vacancy.

"It would be unfair to Everton and also David Moyes to create speculation about this matter," said Gill.

"We won't be naming anybody we speak to in regards to the managerial vacancy at Old Trafford, that would only create unneeded speculation and scrutiny before any official appointment was even made," added Gill.

The Red Devils begin their pre-season preparations in 12 days time when they take on Scottish side Dundee.

David Moyes is the new favourite to succeed retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford following José Mourinho's statement yesterday in which he ruled out leaving Real Madrid.

Reports suggest the 49 year old Everton manager will be named the new Manchester United manager within the next week after Real Madrid manager José Mourinho publicly distanced himself from the Old Trafford vacancy yesterday afternoon.

The news won't please Toffees fans who have come to love Moyes who has consistently kept the Merseyside club in the top half of the Barclays Premier League table and challenging for European football with limited funds. If reports are true and Moyes does join Manchester United it's expected that either Martin Jol or Roberto Martínez would be the preferred successor.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright was unavailable for comment when contacted.

So far Manchester United chief executive David Gill has refused to comment on speculation regarding the managerial vacancy at Old Trafford following Ferguson's unexpected immediate retirement earlier this month, although sources from inside Old Trafford suggest the club want to appoint a manager with proven experience in the Barclays Premier League, leading many to believe that it's always been a two horse race between José Mourinho and David Moyes to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson.

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has publicly declared his commitment to the La Liga champions amid speculation that he would replace retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The leading favourite to take over as Manchester United manager following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly distanced himself from the Old Trafford job. Real Madrid manager José Mourinho was the firm favourite to replace the 70 year old Scot given his previous success in the Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League, but today the 49 year old revealed he was happy managing in the Spanish capital and declared he wouldn't be leaving the Bernabéu for Old Trafford.

"I read the papers and see my name linked with the Manchester United job, which is very nice for me, but I'm happy in Madrid, my family likes Madrid and I won't leave Madrid, so for me these rumours must stop," said Mourinho.

Many expected that any deal that would see Mourinho leave the Bernabéu for Old Trafford would be complicated and difficult as the former FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan manager has almost four years to run on his current contract.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a return to Old Trafford

Mourinho, who won two Barclays Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two Capital One Cups and the Community Shield in his time at Chelsea, also took the time to speak about star player Cristiano Ronaldo who has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, a deal reportedly worth £70 million not enough to convince the Madrid boss to sell.

"Cristiano is a fantastic player, the best in the world and it is only natural that the best player in the world plays at the best club in the world. For me no money can replace Cristiano, he's important for this club and we won't sell," said Mourinho.

"We all know that he had some fantastic years at Old Trafford and became a good player, but he has found a new level at Madrid and become a great player, one of the best footballers in history and together we can hopefully achieve many great things. So we won't sell, we don't sell players like Cristiano and there is no more to say about the issue, we simply won't sell for any amount, not for £70 million, £100 million, £200 million or even £400 million," added the Real Madrid boss.

Ronaldo joined Madrid back in 2009 for a world record transfer fee of £80 million and has scored 112 times in 101 La Liga appearances. The 27 year old has been capped 96 times by Portugal, has three years remaining on his contract at the Bernabéu and according to reports earns £200,000 a week making him the second highest player in the world.

Real Madrid begin the defence of their La Liga crown in August with an opening day clash against Valencia at the Bernabéu.

Psychologically I always loved playing in the number 9 or 7....

Cristiano Ronaldo has heaped praise on retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and also refused to rule out a return to Old Trafford in the future although he's very happy at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid and former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has praised former manager Sir Alex Ferguson following his immediate retirement from the game earlier this month. The 27 year old was arguably one of Ferguson's greatest signings, the Portuguese international maturing into one of the best players on the planet whilst at Old Trafford.

"Sir Alex made me the player I am today, he made me believe in myself from day one and he was like a second father to me. I owe him a lot, I can never repay what he's done for my football career and I'm extremely grateful," said Ronaldo.

"He's the best manager I've worked with and nobody has done what he's done in the game," added the 27 year old.

Ronaldo joined Madrid back in 2009 for a world record transfer fee of £80 million and has taken his game to an even greater level whilst at the Bernabéu, the winger scoring 112 times in just 101 La Liga outings, although if recent reports are to be believed he could be set for a sensational return to Old Trafford with the Red Devils preparing a £70 million bid.

When asked about any possible future transfer Ronaldo didn't give much away.

"I don't know what will happen in the future, nobody knows what the future will hold, maybe one day I will return to Old Trafford, it would be nice and everybody knows of my love for Manchester United. At this time though I'm contracted to Real Madrid and very happy at Real Madrid, all I'm focussed on is winning with Real Madrid," said the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo, who has been capped 96 times by Portugal, has three years remaining on his contract at the Bernabéu and according to reports earns a staggering £200,000 a week making him the second highest player in the world.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson after the Scot decided to retire from management with immediate effect after more than two decades of success at Old Trafford.

Following the retirement of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson it seems there has been somebody new paying tribute to the 70 year old Scot almost every minute since he made the unexpected decision to retire with immediate effect.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has become the latest to pay tribute to Ferguson, the Red Devils chief executive stating that he had no idea of the Scots decision prior to being informed on the same day as the players at Old Trafford.

"Today I'd like to pay tribute to retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson who for more than two decades has worked tirelessly to ensure that Manchester United has succeeded on and off the pitch. Under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson the club have become one of the biggest clubs in British, European and World football," said the chief executive.

"Sir Alex Ferguson is the most successful manager in the history of British football and I'm extremely proud of my time working next to him at Manchester United. The club won't be making any comment at present in regard to the vacant managerial position at Old Trafford which exists following the sudden departure of Sir Alex Ferguson," added Gill.

Gill also revealed that he attempted to persuade Ferguson to stay on for another season but to no avail.

"I did try persuade Sir Alex and obviously it didn't work, he had made his mind up and I respect that, although it's obviously a huge loss for Manchester United and British football because he's the best manager the worlds ever seen," said Gill.

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho and Everton manager David Moyes are the favourites to be named as the new Manchester United manager within the next fortnight before the Red Devils kick off their pre-season schedule against Dundee.

England put on 238 in their first innings and then Australia scored 270, although had Rodgers and Watson not batted well they would have been completely fucked. Bell scored a hundred today and England have five wickets remaining going into day 4. Hasn't been a lot to talk about, apart from some good batting by Rodgers and Bell. Just a good test match as it's nice and close, although that Bell century will probably make things extremely hard for Australia who haven't batted well as a team during this series.

Cracking test match at the moment.

If Australia can bowl England out for 250-270 they have a very good chance of winning.

Following the unexpected and sudden retirement of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson defender Rio Ferdinand has spoken of the shock he felt when the most successful manager in the history of British football told his players that he'd be stepping aside after almost 26 years in charge at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand has been at Old Trafford for ten years and only played under one manager whilst a Manchester United player.

In 270 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Red Devils the defender has only played under Sir Alex Ferguson, but come the opening day of the new season against current Premier League champions Manchester City that will change.

The former England captain said he was extremely shocked by the sudden news.

"When the manager walked into the room to tell us that he was retiring we had no idea what was about to happen and when he said the words I don't think anybody in the room actually took it serious for a few seconds, but eventually it sunk in, we realised he wasn't joking and everybody was shocked, especially senior players like myself," said Ferdinand.

"Nobody expected it and nobody was prepared for it to be honest. I'm sure everyone thought he'd carry on for at least another season after the way Manchester City won the league last year, that's certainly what every player at the club thought and we're all extremely shocked with the news he's retiring. In saying that I think it's important we look back at what he's achieved, it's unbelievable, it's never been done before and I'll safely say it'll never be done again, he's won so much and been at Old Trafford for so long, nobody will match his record or be as successful in my lifetime," added the 33 year old.

Ferdinand is entering the final year of a four year contract he signed back in 2009 and the defender is hoping that he can prove to United's next manager that he's worthy of a new contract in the new upcoming Barclays Premier League season, although the 33 year old accepts he'll play less as he manages his ageing body throughout a rigorous domestic and European schedule, whilst the emergence of young defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could also restrict his playing time.

I know myself and some others have asked about this before and it hasn't been possible.

Is there any chance this could be done in future Rob?

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has brought an end to his glittering managerial career as he announced his immediate retirement from management at a press conference earlier this afternoon.

After failing to secure the Barclays Premier League title on the final day of last season Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has retired with immediate effect. The 70 year old Scot said he thought it was the right decision to walk away with immediate effect and allow someone new with a fresh approach to take over at Old Trafford.

"Last season took a lot out of me physically and mentally, especially with the way the final day of the season transpired, I think I aged about five years on the day and at my age you can't handle that regularly. Personally I feel it's the right time to allow someone with a fresh approach to come in and lead this fantastic squad to many more trophies," said Ferguson.

The Scot won 36 trophies in his time at Old Trafford which included 12 Barclays Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four Capital One Cups, nine Community Shields and the UEFA Champions League twice, the first coming against Bayern Munich in 1999 at the Nou Camp and the second against Barclays Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2008 at the Luzhniki Stadium.

The 70 year old retires as the most successful manager in the history of British football. The North Stand at Old Trafford was officially renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand last November to celebrate the Scots 25 years as Manchester United manager.

In regards to retiring as the most successful manager in the history of British football the Scot spoke proudly of his achievements, the 70 year old thanking his family, players and staff at Old Trafford who he says made his job a lot easier.

"When I joined this club I knew I could be successful, but I never thought I'd be this successful and it's a proud moment to look back on things now that I know it's coming to an end. There has been many ups and downs, there really has, but it's been a fantastic journey and there isn't much I'd change, it was truly fantastic," said the retiring Manchester United manager.

"I'd like to thank my family who have endured a lot, especially my wife Cathy. I'd also like to thank my friends, the players I've had the pleasure of managing and the backroom staff who helped me in doing that, both past and present made a huge impact, they all made things a lot easier and without them I wouldn't have won as many trophies," added Ferguson.

When asked if his successor had been chosen Ferguson remained tight lipped.

"I'm not the one to ask about that, I don't appoint new managers or take part in any process related to that so I can't tell you if anybody has been chosen or approached already, but I'm sure the club will move quickly in relation to that," said the Scot.

Real Madrid boss José Mourinho is the early favourite to take over at Old Trafford following Ferguson's retirement, although the former Chelsea manager still has four years remaining on his deal at the Bernabéu. The likes of Carlo Ancelotti, David Moyes, Fabio Capello and Josep Guardiola have also been linked with the Old Trafford job, the latter pair currently unemployed, although Guardiola has spoken about taking a year away from management following his time at Barcelona.
