Lewa, Gomez, Mandzukic - a third choice forward from that group.

Baffling.

I think Gomez will be sold, makes sense anyway.

Yeah I really don't think Pardew will be on a full 8 year contract.

Ashley has been very smart with his money recently, giving Pardew an 8 year contract doesn't seem like his sort of thing.

It's hard to say how negative we set out to be with Newcastle conceding the early goal, but the side wasn't actually that negative. Cabaye was pushed high up and Perch was about in the normal CM position. It wasn't any more negative than when Newcastle went on that great run last year with Jonas, Tiote and Cabaye as a trio. And more attacking than when we went on a good run early last year when we barely conceded any goals.

The main problem at Newcastle at the moment is an inbalanced squad. if we do go with a variation of a 4-3-3 we either need incisive wingers who can score/get in the final third, or CM's to get in the box to support Cisse and at the moment we are doing neither.

We've lost HBA and Demba Ba from the wings since last season. Gouffran and Marveaux are good players and tidy in possession but neither of them are particularly dangerous in the final third, nor is Jonas. And none of our central midfielders are comfortable getting into the box, meaning our main attack is balls in from the wing with Cisse up against four or so defenders in the box.

-I'm annoyed at the crowd because I reckon if they would relax, the performances might actually come and we would be a good 5 or 6 points better off.

- Booing someone after their first bad cross/shot/through ball is counter-productive, when it normally leads to players then being reluctant to put in another cross/shot/through ball.

What team would you select vs West Ham next weekend?

------------------------Cisse
Marveaux-Cabaye-Perch-Jonas-Gouffran

Or could return to a 4-4-2 with Perch and Cabaye deep.

----------Cisse-Gouffran
Jonas-Cabaye-Perch-Obertan

Hmm. Really don't see how it was as attacking as we played last season, maybe the formation we played was similar but that's about it. Cabaye might have been played in a similar position but without the likes of Ben Arfa and Ba stretching teams Cabaye has much less space and without those two to feed off he's relied on way too much to provide all our creativity going forward. Gutierrez and Sissoko on the wings are not more attacking players than the other too, surely that's obvious.

Gutierrez when played in the midfield three was nowhere near as conservative as Tiote and Perch either. Even when playing there he still played his natural game breaking forward from midfield and popping up on the left wing, to suggest that he was a sitter just like the other two definitely isn't true. I agree we're unbalanced at the moment but that doesn't mean we should start playing players out of position and playing negative tactics, Marveaux and Gouffran are limited but at least they give us other options going forward, one of them at least should be in the team when we can't pick Ben Arfa.

I think the fans aren't helping, but their only really reflecting what's happening on the pitch. The players have constantly looked nervous playing at home and it's a bit too simple just to blame that on the fans.

Probably something like;

Cisse

Jonas Cabaye Gouffran

Perch Sissoko

Never going to happen though, don't think Sissoko has ever been tried deeper in midfield yet.

Well Pardew did put on two wingers at half time and Newcastle conceded four. And Newcastle had more possession than Liverpool. My point is the crowd are against the double pivot as a matter of principle. I can see why Pardew did it, to try and free Yohan Cabaye.

Okay maybe I worded it wrong, we did have possession but we looked like we had no creativity going forward. It's pointless trying to play Cabaye as a playmaker unless we've got strong attacking players around him like the end of last season, putting him there and then dropping Gouffran seemed nonsensical. Don't know what you're on about the second half for, we were two goals down at that point and we were chasing the game, conceding more can be expected.

And why shouldn't the crowd be against it? Incredibly negative tactics for a home game and Tiote has barely had a good game all season. I really don't know why you're so incessant on blaming the crowd, naturally we're going to be negative based on current performances.

Because the fans start negative and it seeps to the players.
Today the negativity started before kick off when it was announced Newcastle would play two holding midfielders. At home. The shock, the horror. Heresy. In a week when Bayern and Dortmund both played the double pivot and both won with big margins.

That's a ridiculous comparison, Tiote and Perch are not Martinez and Schweinsteiger. Playing both of them together was a stupid decision and you could see all game that our players weren't technically good enough to keep possession and that suggests a problem with the midfield.

The tactics were awful, Sissoko playing on the right wing was a terrible decision. From the best of my knowledge he's spent most of his career in centre midfield, Pardew saw him play a couple of good games at CAM and now seems to think he's some sort of marauding attacking forward. We needed Gouffran today too, at least he offers support to Cisse, you look at the midfield we started with and straight away you could see that it lacked balance.

Don't even get me started on the defence.

Maybe the crowd was bad, but what do you expect? This is just the culmination of months of dodgy performances under Pardew who has always looked tactically inept.

as a first time author you have very little influence on the title of the book anyway. If they dont like it they change it. Its not that it is your decision.

Yeah I realise this.

But I can imagine a lot of publishing houses wouldn't even consider it if they got an email about a book with that title.

Hoofing the ball aimlessly at a target man has not worked for the past 60 years, why should it work now? And we're not going to beat Spain and Italy hoofing it either.

Carroll was crap in the second half as he was the first, his 'unlucky' shot was easily covered by De Gea, he was dominated in the air by Vidic and if Probert had anything about him he would have been off well before that. His defensive clearance was decent, but he shouldn't have been on the pitch at that point.

He won one key header, against Evra on the back post, is English football still so far in the stone ages that the fact he's close to 20cm taller than someone makes him a good player?

Nah, he's a huge international liability. He never will get away with the stray elbows, thuggery and 'getting himself involved' that he does in the Premier League. A European ref would have had him off before the incident which he was actually booked for (which ironically, was the softest one of the lot), that's ignoring the fact that unless you play to the specific style that West Ham do he's a gigantic waste of space.

Do you really want players like Jack Wilshere hoofing the ball up the pitch for a caveman to win knockdowns? We've better players than that, we can play better football than that.

If we have to have a target man I'd much rather Lambert, not only because he's scored a ton more goals than Carroll but because he's actually showed under Pochettino that he has some technical ability.

Andy Carroll is fb.

England are a pretty shit team, we can't convince ourselves that we're going to be able to pass teams to death. We've got pretty good crossers and there isn't a better player in the air who is English, I'm not saying start him by any means but he's an effective plan B and useful for certain matches.

He's barely had a proper run in the first team since his Newcastle days where most people seem to forget that he was leading the line very well for a fair good Newcastle team at 20 years old. Lambert's had a good season but Carroll has shown much more potential than him and is already established in the set up, I can't see why you wouldn't want him in the team. Ridiculous to claim he has no technical ability either, just not true at all.

You moan about English culture but I'd say you pretty much epitomise another part of what's wrong with English football, incredibly fickle fans. You write off a clealry talented youngster and just latch on to this seasons flavour of the week in Lambert just because he's banged in a few for Southampton. England actually need to build a team, Lambert will be on the scrapheap in a couple of years time along with the rest of the English one season wonders.

They will when he's back in the England team on the back of it.

And?

He deserves it, best target man we've got, better than just sticking with only Defoe, Sturridge, Welbeck or other random pacey English forward.

Taylor is okay, he's the sort of player along with Guthrie and Best who we've missed this season, hardly players who set the world alight but really handy in those injury ravaged spells where we need more experienced backup.
