Not disputing previous champions league matches as I would agree with you on most of them but I'm seeing City fans and the players/manager after the game going on like the ref yesterday was the reason they lost, when he was just as poor for CSKA as he was for City.

Well ask those City fans then. I've already given my opinion on our failings, and whilst the referees haven't helped, ultimately it's on City.

If he books Yaya (for the arm across chest pull back) literally 10 seconds before the CSKA player fouls Aguero and should have been sent off then it doesn't happen.

Could argue Nasri should have been sent off aswell. Aguero dived for the first penalty which the ref got correct but the second one I'm not sure as they didn't show a replay.

In terms of City moaning about his display, he may have been poor overall but he let Yaya off with the 2nd booking and also should have sent Nasri off so he wasn't necessarily bad against City.

You've entirely missed my point. The referee yesterday was bad for City but I am not blaming him for our defeat or our performance. I am observing that we haven't had very much luck with referees in the Champions League as a whole. Aside from yesterday, there was a penalty and a red card against Roma, two different penalty decisions in Moscow (one for them, one for us) and pretty good penalty appeal for David Silva against Bayern. On top of that we've had a fair few unfortunate decisions in recent years, the most obvious that I can remember being our first match against Bayern in 2011 when we had two clear penalties denied then lost 2-0.

Was the ref really that bad? Aside from booking the wrong man which should have led to a sending off thought he got everything else right?

Well, that's a pretty awful mistake but he also missed a penalty.

My point was about the refereeing in general though, rather than just tonight. Even in our first CL campaign we had some dodgy decisions on penalties.

We are terrible on our own merits but we really do have no luck with referees in the Champions League. We've had so many good penalty shouts ignored.

So you only want to play in Europe for the money?

Fans & players want to play the best sides in Europe.

To be honest, I'm not massively fussed about European football but if my team is in it, I'd quite like us to win a trophy. The money comes in very useful though, and considering the majority of teams in the Champions League don't have any realistic chance of winning it, I'd say the prize and TV money are pretty big motivators.

I don't think theres much bigger games than Madrid away whether its a group game or not.

That's true to an extent. As group games go, it's probably as big as you can get. It's still only a group game though, it only means so much. There's not that much riding on it.

And by your reckoning your games against Barca last year in the last 16 weren't 'big' as they weren't the quarter finals or later.

Yeah, I'm not sure it was. It was fairly big for City because it was our first but in the grand scheme of things, I'm not convinced they did count as big games.

Man City fan loving money SHOCKER

Zing.

You get back into the CL for nights like tonight and he goes and rests half the team? Baffling. A lot of fans not happy it. Imagine the ones who travelled, basically thrown in the towel before kick off.

What, group games where they're going to get humped? No (nowadays, at least) you get into the Champions League for the massive cash incentives and the big matches (i.e. Quarters onwards).

Are we talking about Jan Hagen? I thought he was just a freelancer? Kundert runs a Portuguese football site.

Not that it matters. But criticising Rojo's Sporting form when people hadn't even heard of him a few months ago is ridiculous.

Yeah, if I remember rightly he specialises on Portuguese football and has his own site. Might be me wrong mind.

Yeah, I agree with you there.

No, sorry. A liverpool fan wrote an article for Sporting Witness that more people saw so we're going with that version of events.

To be fair that guy runs a site on Portuguese football. He's about as much of an expert as Tom Kundert.

Yeah i underestimated City's ability to let us back in it

We've made three substitutions and each one has made us less dangerous than the last. Awful management from Pellegrini.

Took long enough but that's a pretty good goal.

It's like Utd have found a 'no penalties' cheat code.

Awful refereeing. Misses 2 or 3 bookings for City then doubled that down by missing two penalties and a red.

Thick as fuck from Smalling too.

A 4-2-3-1 with Milner and Fernando behind Toure sounds a lot more balanced than what Fernandinho-Toure's form has shown this season at least...

Yeah. Though based on what we've seen so far this season, there's no perfect option.

I think Milner is playing central. The actual team sheet from City suggested a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 with Fernando and Milner as the central midfielders with Yaya ahead and Jovetic and Navas out wide.

Mangala can see Abeid coming and still leads with the arm/elbow,

Not a nice challenge

Yeah, that's not great.

Kolorov should have been sent too.

I think we're all agreed on Kolarov. It was a clear penalty and we got very lucky.

Doesn't matter if he plays or not because this is the one game a season you can guarantee Yaya Toure will turn up for and that will single handedly win you the game.

It's nowhere near the certainty it has been in the last three years. If he does actually turn up though, I agree. It's possibly true of Aguero too, I have memories of that FA cup tie a couple of years back when he almost won the match for us single-handedly.

Played shit, warrants a red card. Kolarov should've been sent off

Yeah I remember Kolarov, and Sagna was lucky considering he walked on somebody's back but I can't really remember Mangala doing anything to warrant a red.

Pls, I'm hardly that one-eyed. One just gets a little tired of seeing the conveniently selective and ironic nature of some players/situations.

In all honestly, I couldn't even care. Doesn't exactly alter my life in anyway. It's just good to point things out.

When you're suggesting that John Terry is the only player criticised for not being a very good person then, yes, you're being one eyed. Giggs gets all manner of shit, Rio probably doesn't get as much as he should whilst Rooney and Gerrard aren't immune from criticism. Terry gets more criticism because he's done more to warrant criticism.

Yeah, but he's still a quality CB and thus makes what you said completely irrelevant.

Not really. He's a horrendous human-being, the fact he's also quite a good centre-back doesn't override that.
