What royalties can I expect for coming up with the idea? Any kind of executive role?

I'll send you a signed picture of me.

Because they applied for FIFA membership and no one objected. There are no set of strict rules to FIFA membership, it's all done on a case by case basis.

Greenland are not FIFA members because they don't have any natural grass pitches, they had an artificial pitch installed recently but before that all they had was gravel pitches.

That's a common misconception. They're not members of FIFA because they're a Danish dependency. They're in the process of becoming more autonomous.

Yeah. It's a sad story which lifts in the middle and then ends in tragedy. They could also use it to make a serious point about homophobia in football and by extension in society.
Or they could just make another film about geezers beating the shit out of each other outside a pub. Either or.

I've ordered the Fashanu biography. It would be a very difficult story to turn into film, but I'd like to give it a try. I'd need to contact Jim Read in order to get his permission to adapt it for the screen. There's definitely enough texture there to make it poignant.

That really helps. I'm not going over it yet, just because I'm trying to push on. I've got some fun writing ahead, or at least it's planned out to be fun. I don't think I intended for the main character to be so morbid, but I'm going with it. I've been up since half six and only written 500 words. I really want to do another 5,000 today.

This is a complete waste of time. Aside from the gimmick of being a shareholder at a club, what's the actual point for anyone taking part? Their share price is woefully overvalued, no one buying into this scheme is going to make money.

So then it comes down to novelty. Are they really looking to the football community to help them? Football isn't a charity and Oviedo are shit with money. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, it's like the Ebbsfleet deal, except with none of the mindless fun attached.

Yeah, my food was ready so I didn't finish my point.

The point was that it's pretty easy to make a mainstream audience feel good about a little kid playing baseball. The people who play football tend not to be gentlemen. The image that surrounds it is one of violence and thuggery so it's hard to shake that. I would find it interesting if they made a film about Justin Fashanu though.

You just gave me an idea.

Although with the Gareth Thomas film coming out it would be seen as direct competition. But you're right, that would be a great story.

A daytime nap and some awful football upset my working rhythm, but I got there in the end.

We need someone to link the midfield and attack better. Varney was shit. I'd like to see White moved out to the left side, where he belongs, and have Tonge alongside Austin. Diouf played very cleverly today.

We were extremely lucky.

Sounds like you've found yourself a handful of potential customers already El Hadji.

God I hope so. I don't like working in an office or in a bar and I'm not pretty enough to be a whore.

Ali Lane kindly made me a better cover for the book:

It's not really when you think about it. Football and footballers live in world of cliche. Trying to write a story based in football that doesn't play up to the tropes of the genre is very difficult. That's why the most successful of recent films is the Damned United, because the audience is at ease with the character of Brian Clough because they enter the cinema with the knowledge that he's a real person. Writing Brian Clough without him having previously existed would be extremely difficult.

If you look at the most successful sports, in terms of making successful transitions to film, Baseball and Boxing are the runaway leaders. That's because there is so much romance attributed to the people that are associated with their respective sports that the writer has a much broader canvass to paint his picture with.

The trick with a good sports film is to not actually have the crux of the film being about winning or losing.

Some is, some isn't. I previously tried writing a book about a man who goes to prison, ends up being raped by his cell mate, the two fall in love and then towards the end he discovers that the man who raped him is actually his father who he has never met.

The clusterfuck of problems that opened the door to are obvious: I've never been raped. I've never been to prison. I've never been raped by my father. I met my father. I've never been raped.

I just read some of the dialogue between the two and it's horrible.

So I said fuck it, write what I know. Which is being an emotionally retarded adult male who has failed to shake hands with responsibility.

Just finished it and thought it was excellent. Dead funny, some of your descriptions were brilliant.

Cool. I've just been reading some stuff online and Pixar tell me that I should get my ending sorted out before the middle. Which scares me, because I have no idea what I'm going to do with that.

This is quite fucking riveting, I must say.

Thank you. I don't really know where it's going to end up yet. Some kind of failed romance and a chapter about ketamine are in my mind right now. Apparently 70% of people who do this write fantasy, which makes sense because if you write yourself into a corner you can just have a wizard save the plot.
