The season had taken a negative turn. 8th place, which we were predicted to finish before the season seemed more or less secured, but we would need to hold on to 7th to reach pre-season expectations of a top half finish.
A few good games and qualification to Europe would be nice however.
We started with an away game against struggling Lija Athletic.
Terrible game. We did not manage to create anything and were very lucky to even get a draw.
A home game against in form Floriana waited.
Another draw although this one was a bit better. Gregori got an early goal in the 1st minute and in the first half we had enough chances to score a few more.
For some reason however we totally collapsed after half time and it was just a question of time until Floriana would score. They did in the 79th minute.
For the next game against top of the league Sliema Wanderers I did not have too high hopes.
And yes. Not much to say about this. We were totally outplayed. Just a level below the top teams right now.
I was hoping this season would end soon so that we could regroup and get off to a fresh start. First came a home game against Zebbug Rangers.
A frustrating game. We were terrible in the first half and 3:0 down. I changed to some kind of 4-3-3 throwing everything forward which gave results. But a goal each by Degabriele and Mifsud was not enough.
Two more games to go. The last awaygame was against Melita:
Another game where we just could not create anything. Not much to say. There is just no flow at all to our attacking game in some games.
Last home game against already relegated Balzan would determine if we finish 7th or 8th.
Balzan seems to suit us after we already won the Super Cup against them. I went with an attacking 4-3-3 formation and it paid off with both Gregori and Degabriele getting on the score sheet.
Nice to finish the season in a good way.
This also secured 7th place and made the board overall pleased with my season.
My front three Degabriele, Mbong and Mifsud definitely deserve the most credit this season.
Datsenko also proved to be a great signing at center back. Apart from that there is room for improvement.
Overall for me the season went ok. The Super cup win was a nice bonus. In the League I had high hopes after a good start but ultimately we ended up where we were expected to.
But I enjoyed the season so I will definitely hang around here for another one. Financially the club is looking healthy and some of the players are still very young. So I am confident we can improve next season.

Before the next game the winter transfer window opened up and I wanted to use the 5K € of transfer budget I had left to strengthen the team a bit.
I managed to sign one player for exactly 5K. Brazilian striker Gregori joined from league competitor Senglea Athletic which means there is finally a decent backup for Degabriele.
Additionally the board decided to also spend some of the Champions League and Europa League budget:
The first game after the break was going to be a tough challenge away against Valletta.
I don't think we played too badly but they were just a bit better. And Mbong being injured meant we missed some edge going forward.
Young Baldacchino is also unfortunately not looking too good in defense and does not seem a big improvement compared to Rodolfo Soares.
Next came a home game against Mqabba which we really should win.
Quite a disaster. We started with a different tactic playing a wide 4-4-2 diamond starting with both Degabriele and Gregori. And we got off to a great start with Gregori scoring in the 6th minute.
We had a few more chances and could have had a bigger lead but after half time everything changed and we just couldn't take control of the game. Really disappointing.
A tough away game was now waiting for us again against Birkirkara.
And our poor form continued. We did look ok defensively but just could not get any decent attacking play going.
The next game at home to Senglea Athletic was basically a must-win game.
With Mbong back in top shape things finally worked out. He contributed with one goal and an assist and on top of that Degabriele scored two.
In the 4th round of the cup we were going to play Melita. We were expected to reach at least the quarter-final which meant winning this game.
Still I decided to make a few changes, mainly resting Degabriele for the first time this season and giving second goalkeeper Rudy Briffa another chance.
Unfortunately this was another game where we looked good in the first half with Mbong giving us the lead, but we collapsed in the second. Not sure why this is happening.
Back in the league waited a home game against Naxxar Lions who were just above us in the table.
With our regular starting eleven we did really well again, although it was a pretty even game where we were just more efficient.
Rodolfo Soares was also back in the team after some poor form from Baldacchino.
Young midfielder Owen Magro had an incredible game with two goals and two assists. Unfortunately Degabriele got injured early on and will be out for a few weeks.
But Gregori came on and scored a hat-trick. If he can keep that form we should be able to deal with Degabriele's injury.
Overall this has been a tough few weeks though and we have fallen further down the table. We are now in 7th and can forget about the title.
Qualifying for Europe is definitely still a possibility. But team atmosphere has taken a hit by the poor form lately and I might just have to focus on achieving the expectation of top half finish in order to keep my job and get a contract extension.

We are almost half way into the season and it was time to face surprise team Zebbug Rangers who occupy first position.
It turned out to be a pretty boring game with few chances created on both sides. I was happy to see my defense looking more stable though.
The next game against Melita was a game we were expected to win.
We got off to a good start as young Andrea Farrugia who was replacing injured Marco Mifsud scored what could be the goal of the season with a chip over the goalkeeper from far out on the left side.
The team could not keep concentration up after the goal however end conceded the 1:1 already in the 16th minute. After that we struggled to create anything really dangerous.
In the cup 3rd round we were facing Lija Athletic.
Despite my key players playing quite a lot I felt it was important to at least reach the minimum goal of reaching the next round, so the only changes to the starting 11 were giving second goalie Rudy Briffa a chance and playing second choice left back Connor Zammit.
It was a nice comfortable win with Degabriele and Mbong once again being the difference makers.
Back in the league we were playing relegation threatened Balzan.
Maybe I paid the price for not resting enough players in the cup. Jonathan Pearson scored an early own goal and we just couldn't do enough to tie the game after that.
We wanted to try to make up for it in the next game against predicted champions Hamrun Spartans.
But it ended in another disappointing result. I experimented with a different tactic after recent poor results, playing a 3-4-1-2. And while it helped Degabriele scoring two our three man defense struggled.
Very out of form and with Mbong out injured for a few weeks, we suddenly had the chance to win a title as we were facing Balzan in the BOV Super Cup.
This is of course not the most prestigious title. But anyway a nice bonus and hopefully it improves team morale a bit.
While Marco Mifsud got us an early lead we did not look very good in the second half and conceded in the 74th minute.
We adapted by playing more defensively and having our wingers run on long balls. This helped Mifsud counter in another goal in the 90th minute.
We needed to carry some of this form back into the league.
And we certainly did. I did some changes to the tactics giving Debono back the right back spot and moving Jonathan Pearson into his more familiar defensive midfield position. Additionally we played this game somewhat asymmetrically placing Mifsud on the left wing as usual but missing a right winger in Mbong's absence.
While the game was pretty even we were really efficient and cruised to a pretty comfortable win.
Heading into a three week winter break we had lost some ground now being in 4th, 5 points behind leaders Sliema Wanderers. I hope to make one or two signings in the January transfer window and hopefully pick up some form again.

Next on the schedule was an away game against Senglea Athletic. A manageable task considering our recent good form.
This was a game we truly dominated and the attacking three Mifsud, Degabriele and Mbong are starting to show great chemistry.
Naxxar Lions waited next in another away game.
Another great game by Degabriele and young Cauchi also continues to impress. I am starting to get some worries about the defense though.
Despite winning most games Rodolfo Soares has been a liability due to his limited pace. Playing long balls through the middle always seems to work against him and quite a few goals have been conceded as a result of that.
Also Jonathan Pearson has been increasingly inconsistent.
For the next game against Lija Athletic the defense looked better but we failed to create enough chances. A boring 0:0.
Floriana was the next opponent and I expected a tough away game.
We started terribly and went down 0:2. Rodolfo Soares and Jonathan Pearson again did not look great. After being shouted at there was a good reaction from the players however who turned the game around in the second half. Degabriele keeps on scoring and got the winner in the 92nd minute.
Also young midfielder Owen Magro has to be mentioned after a few impressive performances and two assists in this game.
Predicted top team Sliema Wanderers visited next.
Rodolfo Soares and Jonathan Pearson again looked pretty awful. At half time Stefano Baldacchino came on for Soares and he will probably keep that center back spot for now.
The second half looked better with Mifsud and Degabriele scoring but it was not enough with Sliema getting a 90th minute winner.
In the table we stay in second position one point behind the leaders. But it is Zebbug Rangers who have now surprisingly taken over 1st place.

A great start of the season but I still felt I needed to strengthen the squad a bit to be competitive. Most urgently a right back was needed as two right backs had left the club and the only option left was young and fairly limited Mark Debono.
On deadline day we found a good option for free. Experienced Jonathan Pearson who actually has spent most of his career at Hibernians except for his last three seasons where he played for Sliema Wanderers. Although he is naturally a defensive midfielder I feel that he will significantly strengthen the right back position this season.
In the second game of the season we faced Qormi who are predicted to relegate away.
It turned out to be a comfortable win with goals by Degabriele and Mbong.
Game three was going to be a bigger challenge at home against Valletta who are predicted to fight for the continental qualification spots.
And this was a very different story. We struggled to create anything and should really have lost by more.
The weekend after we traveled to Mqabba and although we still did not create too much we were very efficient with Degabriele grabbing another goal and impressive signing Datsenko scoring a header.
After that waited a tough home game against predicted top team Birkirkara. It was a pretty even and unexciting game and I had already accepted the thought of getting one point out of the game when suddenly after a corner in the last seconds of the game Rodolfo Soares got us the winner.
Overall a fantastic start to the season which puts us in 2nd position just one point behind Valletta. Still we are lacking a lot of depth and I am more or less playing with the same starting 11 every game. So any injuries or fatigue might mean we can't keep this up.

In the next round of the Europa League we would travel to Kazakhstan and take on Kairat Almaty. Again a pretty difficult task:
We started at home but again struggled to create anything losing 1:0 after a goal in the 25th minute:
From the away game I did not expect much but I was happy at least that we managed to keep the score to 0:0 until the 79th minute. But we only managed to have one shot on target:
This meant the European adventure was over and it was time to start focusing on the League.
I spend most of the transfer money on strengthening the center-back position, signing Ukrainean Semen Datsenko from the Maltese second tier club Mosta. He would be forming the centre-back pairing together with Rodolfo Soares.
The first game was going to be against predicted champions Hamrun Spartans. My tactic was going to be a 4-2-3-1 wide where much of the attacking would go through wingers Joseph Mbong and Marco Mifsud:
So far I thought our defense was our strength but we were struggling going forward so it took me by surprise how the game played out:
It started terrible with us being down 2:0 after 25 minutes. Going all out attacking we managed to get back into the game through Owen Magro and Rodolfo Soares. Right after half-time Hamrun scored again however, but almost instantly there was a reaction with Marco Mifsud scoring the equalizer.
In the 69th minute Degabriele stepped up again and gave us the lead which we kept till the end of the game. Not sure what happened to our defense but I was happy to get the win against a predicted top team. It was also nice to see young Andreas Cauchi getting two assists.

Not regretting my decision to move here. Probably the most enjoyable season in this career so far.
There were definitely some quality players available. However I had to let a few players go immediately. Most notably the Austrian left-back Martin Kreuzriegler who left to play in Austria's second tier and Maltese midfielder Bjorn Kristensen who did not find a new club despite leaving to play for a better team. Both would have been among the best players in the team.
This left me with a few good players available but very limited depth:
Experienced Maltese national team Goalkeeper Andrew Hogg would be my biggest star:
Up front I had my second Maltese national team player in Jurgen Degabriele. Unfortunately he also wanted to leave the club.
There would have been a steep drop off in quality after that if I hadn't been lucky enough to find this 16-year old gem in my youth team:
We had time for one friendly before being thrown into Champions League action. We managed to win against second tier team Zabbar SP, but it was hardly convincing.
The only goal was scored from a freekick by young midfielderJonathan Degiorgio who would also take a starting place this season:
After that it was time for the Champions League qualifying first round draw:
A trip to Azerbaijan and probably an impossible task to be honest.
It was impossible. Not too much to say about it. They were clearly a few levels above us and we did not manage to create anything.
It still meant some money in the bank and allowed us to continue in the Europa League.
A much friendlier draw that should allow us to make it to the next round.
For the first game we traveled to Andorra and despite not yet being fully convinced by our attacking play our centre-back pairing of old Brazilian captain Rodolfo Soares and young Stefano Baldacchino looked good.
Stefano Baldacchino got the winning goal after a corner in the 15th minute:
We just needed a decent performance at home to ensure qualification to the next round. And it turned out to be no problem with striker Degabriele stepping up and scoring a hat-trick.

Time to move on to the 4th level. That means I had the following countries to choose from:
St. Lucia
Kosovo
Aruba
Cuba
Laos
Bermuda
Malta
Macau
Mongolia
Bhutan
That the level is getting higher was clear as now most top tier teams actually had managers and there were fewer jobs available.
However in Malta there were some interesting options and I got offers from two different clubs:
This definitely feels like a step up. Back to semi-professional football and we are actually going to play in the Champions League qualification this season as they won the Maltese title in the previous one.
Despite them being a dominant force in Maltese football in the last few years, winning 3 of the the last 5 league titles, this season might not be that easy. We are only predicted to finish 8th and some key players are keen on leaving the club:
After a long trip via Incheon and Rome it felt good to be back in Europe however and getting a salary again. Only a modest 550€ per month, but something at least.
Hibernians F.C. was founded in 1922 first playing under the name Constitutionals FC, representing the pro-British Constitutional Party.
In 1930 the Constitutional Party had upset the Roman Catholic Church so much that it was made a mortal sin for Catholics to vote for the party. Therefore a year later the club changed its name to Hibernians Football Club.
They have been very successful in their history winning 12 league titles.
The home games are played at the 3000 seater Hibernians stadium which is quite an upgrade to most stadiums I have managed in during my career:
It is located in the town of Paola, which like most of Malta is more or less connected to the capital Valletta. Paola has almost 8000 inhabitants and is most known for the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, the biggest church on the Maltese islands.

We had the chance to take home the title with a win against Beercelona, providing Rovers would also lose their game.
Our game was not a big problem. The team was motivated and knew how important this game was. But what about Rovers?
They couldn't handle the pressure and this meant:
We had one more now meaningless game in the season which we also won:
Overall a great season with my third league title in as many years. It might be time to take on some bigger challenges.
The best player this season in the end was Kenneth Karosich who ended up being a more reliable scorer than Choi Min Sung.
Shaun Spindel also turned out to be a great signing from rivals Rovers, while youngster David Gonzalez did a great job on the other wing.
There was still a chance for another title. The Cup was starting in May and our first game would be against the Bobcat Rovers who finished 13th in the League.
It did not go particularly well.
We did have a lot of shots but could not score and in the end struggled to even score on penalties. So unfortunately it was a very short cup adventure.
I am not going to stay in Guam next season as I am looking for a bigger challenge and there is no continental football to be played.
Looking at the leagues of next tier I am sure it will get a little more difficult from now on.

It was time for the big game against Rovers. Before the game I was quite nervous not really knowing what to expect.
It was a very even game in the end. Micah Paulino scored an early goal after a corner and we managed to hold on to that. Partly thanks to a good performance by Joseph Bordallo in goal.
We now had the title in our own hands.
A few days after the game there was a quick takeover with Patrick Prieto becoming the new chairman and investing massive 2,000€ in the club.
Should not mean any significant changes
We played the next game against LOA Heat FC which was an easy 3:0 win.
Then Patrick Prieto already seemed to have gotten tired of his job and I received this news:
Not sure what is going on. Anyway, with two games to go this is the League Table. So I am hoping we will be able to secure the title with a win against Beercelona. However there is a bit of a break so we will have to wait 24 days for that.

It has been a great start to the season at Guam Shipyard, but we need to make sure we keep the focus as we probably can't afford to lose too many points with Rovers looking very strong so far this season.
January and February would give us 7 more league games before we would face Rovers on the 1st of March.
The first three games we managed to win without much problems. Then our international defender Micah Paulino got injured missing the next two games. I thought we would be able to handle that but our defense clearly struggled. First conceding two goals against Tritons who are a team close to the bottom of the table. Luckily we managed to score enough to still win the game.
After that we faced Disasters though which are a decent team by Guam standards and it was an overall poor performance as we lost 3:1.
We showed a good reaction against Family but then struggled again as we just could not find a way to score against Sidekicks meaning the game ended in a 1:1 draw.
Luckily Rovers have also struggled a bit. However Strykers and Quality Distributers have seriously picked up pace which means we might actually have an exciting title race coming up with several teams involved.
Strykers particularly impressed beating Rovers 3:1. They are still unbeaten this season.
The most impressive player during these two months has been young winger Jake Gonzalez who has managed 4 goals and 5 assists. Good to see some of the younger players showing good potential.
Meanwhile I finished my Continental B coaching qualification:
4 games left of the season, starting with a game against Rovers and finishing with the Strykers. Will we be able to do enough to get my 3rd League title in 3 seasons?

I was not 100% optimistic heading into the start of the season. But what followed was a bit of a deja-vu from the previous season in Sri Lanka.
After a somewhat unconvincing pre-season we had no problem winning our league games fairly comfortably:
Unsurprisingly Choi Min-Sung is the big star so far with 4 goals.
The problem however is that Rovers seem as unstoppable as us and are also winning their games without too much trouble. I already have a feeling our game against them in March will be decisive for the title.
After the first 5 games there was a bit of a winter break with the next game being played on the 12th of January. The transfer window opened again on the 1st of January, so I decided to strengthen my squad a bit to prepare for the upcoming battle against Rovers.
First in was Strykers central defender Isiah Lagutang. He will be the first backup for now but has the potential to become my best centerback in the future. I will also try to retrain him as a defensive midfielder as I am short on options there and players in that position don't seem to exist in Guam.
Second signing is right winger Shaun Spindel from Rovers. He has been great so far this season with 4 assists and an average rating of 7.42 for Rovers. He will take Justin Abril's spot in right midfield.
Last we signed left-back Donovan Manibusan from Quality Distributors. He should already take the starting position ahead of Camden Aguon, but is anyway a necessary signing as Aguon will retire at the end of the season.

I started to get to know my squad and the league and to be honest I am not sure why we are predicted to finish 1st. The Rovers have won the last 6 seasons and seem to have a significantly stronger squad than us.
Our strength lies mainly in attack where we have quite a lot of depth and our best player by far in Guam International Choi Min-Sung.
Midfield is our weak part while our second international Micah Paulino can be found in central defense.
Some signings were definitely needed. As there were no restrictions on foreign players I looked into signing some of my former players, but no one seemed interested in moving to Guam.
Not even Jacques Barnabo who is already at his third club in Martinique after not getting any playing time at US Marinoise. While he scores the occasional goal he has not really got his career started yet.
I managed however to pick up some players on positions where I definitely needed to strengthen. Right-back Christian Schweizer and right-midfielder Justin Abril both come from fellow title contenders Strykers, which is nice as we weaken our opposition a bit. Both should go into the starting eleven. Justin Abril mainly though as I my current options are so weak.
Third player to arrive is attacking midfielder Marcus Paulino who is one of very few players from Rovers who was interested in joining us. Mainly because he is not good enough to get any playing time there while he goes straight into the starting 11 for us, which is slightly worrying.
I planned a pretty short pre-season exclusively against lower division teams.
The results were not the most convincing, but that was the case in Sri Lanka as well, so I am not worrying too much about it. I played around quite a bit with the tactics but in the end settled on a 4-4-2 Diamond-wide where we would play a quite direct game, playing balls into space for our strikers to run at.
Last some good news in the club paying for my next coaching qualifacation.

My new job was again unpaid so I would have to live on savings for a while.
It was quite a long trip to my new home with stops in Kuala Lumpur and Manila. Guam is a territory of the USA and the biggest and most southern of the Mariana Islands.
It has a population of around 160,000 people and the economy mainly relies on tourism and United States Armed Forces who have both Air Force and Naval bases on the island.
The island has an eventful history first being settled by the indigenous Chamorro people, before being colonized by Spain, then captured by the United Stated and later by Japan before being recaptured by the US again in 1944.
As a result the population is also quite diverse with Chamorros and Filipinos being the biggest ethnic group but many inhabitants also having American, Japanese or Korean heritage among others.
I was going to be based in the Northern town of Dededo which with 45,000 inhabitants is the biggest in Guam. The town is nothing special except being known for a weekend flea market that attracts large crowds. But most of the football in Guam seems to be played here as the Guam Football Association National Training Center, which has a capacity of around 1,000 is located here.
The league in Guam is fully amateur. There seems to be a fairly big amount of teams however for an island of its size with the top division holding 17 teams and there being several lower divisions as well.
Traditionally Guam Shipyard and Rovers are the dominating teams both having won 9 league titles. The last win for Guam Shipyard however came in 2006 (at least in the game), while Rovers have won the last 6 seasons.
Guam Shipyard has however won the cup the last two seasons.
Despite this recent advantage for the Rovers, Guam Shipyard is predicted to finish first, Strykers 2nd and Rovers 3rd. The boards expectation is also that we win both the league and the cup.
The league only consists of 16 games so it is important we find our form early to meet these expectations.

It was time to look for a job again. I could pretty early rule out Kuwait as a priority as only jobs at relegation candidates were available. The leagues in Brunei and East Timor had already started and the job at the league leaders were not available, so I did not think they were the best options either.
I had one semi-professional league left which was Bangladesh. I applied for 3 jobs but unfortunately 3 weeks passed without hearing anything from the clubs.
I had a look into some jobs in Samoa which seemed to be the strongest Amateur league among the rest. The same thing happened there.
Next I tried my luck in Guam. Finally, two interviews for the top teams Guam Shipyard and Strykers. The job interviews resulted in two job offers. Both unpaid. I was truly back at amateur level.
But I wanted to get on with my career so I accepted the Guam Shipyard offer.
So I was hoping to take the next step in my career managing in a slightly better league than Sri Lanka. Instead I will now head to a league where one of the teams is called Beercelona.
But it should be an interesting challenge and an exciting new place to visit. Also the league is only 16 games long which is nice after the 34 game season in Sri Lanka.

So in the next game against Old Ben's we had the chance to capture the league title with two games to go. Last time we beat them 6:0 so hopefully it would not be too much of a problem.
The players were a bit nervous towards the end but we managed to hang on to a win thanks to two goals by in-form Kumara. This means level 3 is unlocked.
There were still two more league games to be played before the FA Cup Final however.
Two more wins meant that we won the League quite comfortably in the end.
In the FA Cup Final we were going to face relegated Civil Security. Would they be able to cause us any problems?
No. Quite a convincing final win. Overall a very successful season. Really started to like my team towards the end and it would be interesting to see what we could do in the AFC Cup next season.
But in the end the Sri Lankan League is quite boring with way too many games and no one to really challenge us. Also the board does not seem to be interested in making any improvements to take the club to the next level,
refusing my demands to go professional, improve training facilities... despite decent finances.
So it is time to leave.
Level 3 contains the following leagues:
Kuwait
Brunei Darussalam
Timor-Leste
Guam
American Samoa
Cook Islands
Samoa
Bangladesh
US Virgin Islands
Montserrat
Kuwait is by far the most reputable league, but I would probably not be able to get a job in a top team there. The most logical next step would probably be Bangladesh, while Brunei could be good as well.
All other leagues look like quite a step down in level from Sri Lanka.

A pretty shocking start to the month. The Sri Lankan Premier League does unfortunately not have the best scheduling so I had 12 players away on international duty and top scorer Osagie inured, so I knew it was going to be a tough game. But I did not think it would go that badly. To be fair looking at the stats it was a fairly even game, but with no natural striker available I was always going to struggle to score.
The supporters were not very happy.
We now only had a 1 point lead on Police who we were playing next. Luckily all players would have returned from international duty at least.
Time for the probably most crucial game of the season:
Great result and we were back to a 4 point lead ahead of Police. The rest of the month went quite well too.
We started with easily advancing to the final in the FA Cup. After that a tough game against in-form Air Force awaited and we struggled being down 1:0 early and could not score an equaliser until the 77th minute.
Then the game went somewhat crazy and ended 3:3. Huge credit to 16-year old striker Wawalage Sumedha Kumara who as a backup for Osagie already scored against Police and now came on as a substitute to score two against Air Force.
With 3 games to go we now have an 8 points lead. So barring a total collapse the Premier League title should be ours.

March was another relatively busy month with 6 games.
It started off well with three straight convincing league wins. After that we struggled a bit with fixture congestion and in the last game of the month we were again missing Hapan Pediyalage Sunanda Chamara Gunasekara & Anura de Silva as they were playing with Sri Lanka's U23 team.
In the cup however we did our job and move on to the Semi-final.
The two draws in the end brought Police a bit closer to us, but a 4 point lead with 7 games to go should still be something we should be able to defend.
However this happened in the last game and is a bit of a worry:
Osagie is our top scorer so far this season with 22 League goals and will be out for 4 weeks. Luckily April is a bit less of a busy month and we have a 2 weeks break until the next game.
Meanwhile I completed another coaching course and already started on the next one.

December 2018
The good form continued until we had to face main challengers for the title Police. It was an even game, but unfortunately we did not do enough to beat them and they gave us an indication that they might be good enough to challenge us for the title until the end.
We bounced back directly though and Police losing the next game meant we were back in top of the league pretty quickly.
January 2019
After an almost one month long winter break we kicked off the new year with a cup game against lower league Maligawatte Youth. It was not really a problem and we moved on to the next round with a 3:0 win. We continued by getting a 6:0 win in the league before playing our probably weakest game so far in a 1:1 with relegation-threatened Blue Star. A game we could easily have lost. I feel we definitely need to get a bit more consistent to make sure Police or Air Force do not catch us.
February 2019
February was a very busy month which was not made easier by four of our players being away playing the South Asian Games with Sri Lanka. Three of them were starters: my best defender Hapan Pediyalage Sunanda Chamara Gunasekara, central midfielder Zarwan Johar & left-winger Anura de Silva. I thought I would get by ok without them but I certainly struggled with consistency. At least most of the games we failed to win were due to not taking our chances and not due to playing badly. The other good news were that we won the cup game and moved on to the quarter final and that the form of Police and Air Force was not great either.
This means we are still top of the league 3 points ahead of Police with 12 games to go of the season.
Meanwhile we also had a youth intake. Not a lot of great players but this guy could already be a decent back-up for the first team and has the potential to be our best defender.

7 more games were played in October and November and we definitely stepped up, winning all of them. Most of them very comfortable and the league seems a little bit too easy at the moment.
But it is important we do not slow down. We managed to build a bit of a cushion down to 3rd placed Air Force. But the Police are still chasing us and are only one point behind us.
My two strikers David Osagie and Ahamed Shazny have been the outstanding players so far scoring 9 and 8 goals respectively.
New signing Hapan Pediyalage Sunanda Chamara Gunasekara has been the best defensive player while 16-year old right winger Mohamed Rizwan Ishan has been the biggest positive surprise scoring 5 goals and 3 assists with an average rating of 7.78.
I am making good progress on my coaching qualifications as well and started another course.

Pre-season
For pre-season I decided to play exclusively against lower league Sri Lankan opposition to hopefully build up some confidence and score some goals.
But I can't say it went great.
I switched back and forward between different formations, struggling to find one in which we performed the way I expected.
Going forward we did not create enough and when we did our strikers were unable to put away the clearest of chances. In the back meanwhile we made unnecessary mistakes on regular basis.
11 of my players being called up to Sri Lanka's national team and being away for game 3 and 4 of pre-season did not have much of a negative nor positive impact either.
In the last pre-season game I switched to a 4-2-4 wide formation which I also used at US Marinoise although it does not suit Colombo FC's squad perfectly. It did seem to get us scoring a bit more though.
Sri Lanka Premier League - September
I was not very hopeful after the pre-season but in the first game of the season against title holders Renown everything fell in place and we got a 5:1 win. We were back to the old problems in our first away game agains Pelicans however and were unable to score. But in the 90th minute 16-year old right winger Mohamed Rizwan Ishan saved us a draw.
Against Civil Security we were totally dominant and should probably have scored a few more goals.
The good news is that most teams are not really better than the lower division teams we played in pre-season. We should have by far the strongest squad.
But I am still not convinced by the way we play and we might not be allowed to slip up to often.
Other good news:

After a long 32 hour trip with stops in Paris and Delhi I finally arrived in Sri Lanka.
It would be quite a change of scenery, changing the Caribbean for the chaotic city of Colombo.
In terms of stadium this is definitely an upgrade from previous jobs as we are playing our home games in 25,000 seater Sugathadasa Stadium.
Apart from Football it also hosts Rugby Union games and Track and Field events. And it also seems like many of the other teams also play some or all of their home games in our stadium as there are only 7 FIFA standard stadiums in the country.
The Sri Lankan Premier League consists of 18 teams and everyone plays everyone twice for a total of 34 games.
The league was started in 1985 and has since then been played in many different formats.
Colombo FC though is a very young club, founded in 2008. They made it to the top league already in 2014/2015 and immediately finished top of the table. However that season had a playoff system and they were knocked out in the quarter final. The next year they won however and in real life retained that title in 2016/2017. In the game however Renown SC are the current title holders.
Colombo FC are clear favourites to win this season and the board expectations reflect that with us being expected to win both the League and the Cup.
The squad looks ok. Some established players and some promising youngsters. I have three Nigerians. As I can only register two foreigners one is in the reserves however and has been told to look for a new club.
Striker Ahamed Shazny and central midfielders Nagur Meera and Momas Yapo will be crucial for my success.
I wanted to strengthen my squad somewhat and was not able to hire a scout until towards the end of the transfer window. I did managed to find one good player however that I signed from league rivals Java Sport.
He should go right into the starting 11 and take one of the center-back spots.

Haha, especially since it looks like Marinoise put him in the Under 21 squad after I left.
But I can only register two foreigners in Sri Lanka and I already have three Nigerians, so it will be difficult.
Maybe he has to wait until I join my next club.

During the summer I was still very undecided what to do with my career.
A first thing that happened was that Jean-Michel Modestin decided to retire, which was hardly surprising at the age of 47. So I was in need of another striker and could not resist giving an old acquaintance from Saint Pierre & Miquelon the chance for an international career:
Apart from that it proved to be very difficult to find reinforcements for the goalkeeper and defense positions. This made me doubt how much fun the coming season at US Marinoise would be.
Then out of nowhere some players came to me and told me that I did not have their support anymore. Maybe not out of nowhere as I knew there was a lack of respect due to my inexperience in management. But I did not really expect it after leading the club to promotion. I told them that I still felt that the majority of the players were behind me. That turned one of the key players Aurelién Blondel around.
The other three Soulier, Bernard and Martin Durand were however still complaining.
I told them how unprofessional they are and immediately released Bernard from his contract. He was one of my worthless defenders who I wanted to replace anyway. Soulier, my goalkeeper I wanted to replace as well so I did not see it as a huge problem. Martin Durand however was one of my best players and someone I would ideally like to get on my side.
Anyway July arrived and some Level 2 jobs became available as those countries got loaded into the game. Some of the better ones looked like they could be tough to get at a later stage. So I had a difficult decision to make.
It did not take long and a few weeks later I had a new job on my third island after Saint Pierre and Martinique. I was going to move to Sri Lanka. It resulted in a bit of a pay rise as well. In Sri Lanka I might even be able to live off that salary.

It has been a great start with US Marinoise. With 3 games to go I knew that 2 wins would probably be enough for promotion.
I forgot to mention it earlier, but you might have seen it by the number of points in the league table, that a win gives 4 points, a draw 2 points and a loss 1 point. So the same system as in Saint Pierre & Miquelon.
In the last 3 games we would play two relegation candidates. Bottom of the table CS Vauclinois and Réveil Sportif, while we also would play fellow promotion candidates Assaut at home.
We continued scoring lots of goals. The supposedly easy game against CS Vauclinois got off to a terrible start and we were down 3:0 after 45 minutes. Again my team showed a lot of character however. Louis Gauthier scored 1:3 on a penalty in the third minute of stoppage time of the first half. In the second half we looked like a different team and after 64 minutes of play we were 4:3 up thanks to another goal by Gauthier as well as goals from Blondel and Gicquel. Gauthier added another one to complete his hattrick in the 95th before Vauclinois pulled one back in the 96th.
In the game against Assaut ther win never really felt in danger, although you never know with out goaltending and defending. Finally Modestin had a good game and scored two, This win secured our promotion all but in theory. We could however still hope to win the league if Diamantinois would drop points in the last game.
But Diamantinois won and my players were not really motivated anymore and we even got two red cards which meant we had no chance. Still, this ending to the season with US Marinoise has been very enjoyable and a 2nd place finish in the table and promotion should give my reputation a bit of a boost.
So I feel I have a bit of a difficult decision to make. It would be fun to have a shot at the top division with US Marinoise. For it to really be fun, I will need to seriously strengthen my defense though. But I also have a challenge to think about and should maybe really move on to level 2. I was allowed by the board to take another coaching course. So I will hang around for four months and see how well I can strengthen the squad and what level 2 jobs are available once I completed it.

I was quite happy with my squad at US Marinoise although it was somewhat unbalanced. The midfield and attack were looking quite good, while I was not entirely sure if I would be able to trust my defense and goalkeeper.
Also there was not a lot of depth, but a schedule with a game only every 14 days would hopefully allow me to play with my first team in all games.
I was going to go with an attacking 4-2-4 wide formation to mainly try to score a lot of goals even if that would leave me somewhat vulnerable in defense. I aimed however to put a high focus on closing down to make it difficult for opponents to get out of their own half. Hopefully in that way my defense would not get too much work.
And we certainly were able to score a lot of goals. I could not really have hoped for a much better start.
Against AS New Club we were the better team throughout and took an early lead. We should have scored more, but they hit us twice on the counter-attack instead. But when throwing everything forward Joshua Gicquel who came on for Jean-Michel Modestin scored a late 88th minute equaliser.
Also in our first home game against US Robert we were early in control. After getting a 2:0 lead we allowed them quite a lot of chances though and they even missed a penalty. But again Joshua Gicquel scored in the 88th minute to ensure the victory.
After that followed a crazy away game against Stade Spiritain. The players were complaining before the game that our tactics were too attacking considering the opposition. And our defense certainly struggled. Again we conceded a penalty which Stade Spiritain scored in the 3rd minute. We quickly came back with a goal by Aurelien Blondel in the 6th minute and then defender Nathanael Marchand scored in the 25th minute after a chaotic corner situation to give us a 2:1 lead.
We were not really able to control the game after that however and Stade Spiritain could have scored a few goals and in the 41st minute they got their equaliser.
In the second half we played better creating a lot of chances. Instead Stade Spiritain scored on a counter in the 84th. But this team seems to have an ability to find a way to score when they need to. Throwing everything forward Louis Gauthier scored the 3:3 just one minute later and in the 95th minute substitute Liam Faucher scored our fourth goal to give us an unexpected win.
It has been a fantastic start. Only club legend Jean-Michel Modestin has been underperforming and might not be allowed to start next game. We are playing bottom of the league CS Vauclinois at home next. One worry however is that right-back and our best defender Christophe Renard will miss that game as he is suspended.
In the League table we are now up to 2nd with 3 games to go. Only 3 points down to 4th place though so we can't afford to slow down.

So I was escaping the winter of Saint Pierre & Miquelon to some warmer climate.
Via Montreal I flew to Fort-de-France and was picked up at the airport for the 45 minute drive down to Le Marin in the south of Martinique.
Le Marin has around 8800 inhabitants and is known for being the biggest yacht harbour in the south caribbean.
Martinique is definitely a more established footballing nation than Saint Pierre & Miquelon. The Coupe de l'Outre-Mer which was mentioned earlier, the tournament where Saint Pierre & Miquelon got all their double-digit losses , was won by Martinique in 2010 after beating Reunion in the final.
Additionally they have won the Caribbean Cup in 1993 and have some decent performances in the CONCACAF Gold Cup where they reached the quarter-final in 2002, losing to Canada after penalties. They are not a FIFA-member however, so they are not taken part in World Cup Qualification.
The top tier of Martinique, the Martinique Championnat National conists of 14 teams. US Marinoise however were relegated from that league in 2015-2016 and now play in the second tier Martinique Promotion d'Honneur. The club was founded in 1970 and has won the Martinique Championnat Nacional on two occasions, in 1990 and 1994. They also participated in the CONCACAF Champions League in 1991 where they had a pretty good run before getting knocked out by Police FC from Trinidad & Tobago. They play their games at 2500-seater Stade Roger Bonaro.
In the current season the team was expected to finish 7th. They have been overperforming however and find themselves in 3rd spot after 20 games with 6 games to play. Only 6 points separate them from 8th place however, so they could easily drop down the table if results do not go their way. The top 3 teams are promoted and that is what I am going to try to achieve here even if that is not necessarily an expectation from the board.
The club is semi-professional but only has one player on a part-time contract of 24€ a month (+ a 1€ appearance fee). It is 47-year old club legend Jean-Michel Modestin who has played at the club since the season 1994/1995.
Otherwise the best players at my disposal can be found on the wings and in central midfield:

Glad you like it. Yes, it has been a good start, although I did make it quite easy for myself taking over a club which was already leading the league by a few points.
By March 2018 I had finally completed my coaching course.
So i had a few months with nothing to do in Saint Pierre until any Level 2 leagues would start.
I had a look at the job market and there were a few interesting choices for clubs to manage for the last few games of the 2017-2018 season. One option stood out however and after a successful interview I had a new job.
I would even be earning some money now.
