I have added a new updated 80s file to the opening post. I have amended the squad selection rules to accommodate today's squads builds. I have also added FFP to match what it is currently. I did multiple tests with FFP but not one club failed it. So I hope it works ok. As usual let me know of any issues. Thanks, enjoy, and Happy New Year!

@beppemre81  I know why your file is playing up. You have changed the set up date to 8th June for the competitions, where I had originally set it for 10th July. This is causing the game to get confused and start picking teams from the wrong season. Man, you caused me a headache for a while, but I'm glad there was nothing wrong with my file. 

@Curtains2720 - rest easy, the file is fine! I will adjust the squad registrations soon and release a new update.

@beppemre81 Thanks for your game file. In “game status” I notice you've made 1 additional change to my database and have used the In Game Editor. What change did you make? I am wondering if that has compromised my file because if you check La Liga qualifications for Europe, that is messed up too. 

This has not occurred in any of my testing, and the logic I have set in the advanced rules would not allow it to happen either. Maybe the IGE has altered something???

Thank you for the screenshots. I cannot explain the problem you have encountered. I have not come across this in all my testing. I would like to take a look at your file. Would you be able to upload it to Mediafire and put the link on here? You can get a free account and be able to use 10gb of data. Let me know.

Ooh that's not good. I have not come across any problems like that in testing. Is there any way you can send me your save file? 

Failing that, can you give me some information…

• What was the final league table in serie A in the first season?
• Who played in, and won the Italian FA Cup?
• Who won the European Cup?
• Who won the UEFA Cup?
• Who won the Cup Winners Cup?

Regarding squad registration, I am going to re-examine the squad rules and release an update shortly or after the next SI patch.

To be honest I don't really know if the AI does adjust over time. I've tested on view only, so for proper AI interaction full detail would be required. A good bit of testing and analysis would be needed. It's something I'll keep an eye on.  

It would certainly be possible to gradually reduce the rules over a period (albeit quite an exhaustive process), but would the AI change their squad development as a result? I'm not sure. 

Feel free to adjust the figure to suit your needs. It certainly makes clubs rethink their transfer policy. Also encourages clubs to use more home grown players.

Sadly, I am very disappointed with how things have turned out this year. This is the last in this part of the series and it should really have been a case of fine tuning all the niggly things that haven't been right over the years. 

The ability to continue an fm23 save is what sold the game to me. But I read that there's issues further down the line with some of these saves. I don't want to waste my time continuing a save which may end up corrupted. This was a headline feature, you'd think a headline feature would be 100% guaranteed to work. Same with the improved AI squad planning. It's embarrassing. 

As what was said above, fm25 will be riddled with issues for about 3 years I reckon. 

The pre game editor has also disappointed. I spent months engrossed in last year's version. I simply refuse to invest the same amount of time dealing with problems in an editor that isn't functioning properly. 

And one more thing while I'm at it, I have posted a couple of bugs I've come across but they always seem to remain open, with no comments from SI. So I have to question are they even getting looked at. 

I have hardly touched the game since the early access came out. I was holding out for the editor but now I've simply lost the will to do anything with it until things are working better. If someone like daveincid claims to be able to improve the AI, how can SI not do this on release with their own game??? 

Maybe when SI review the playing time of users and compare it with previous years, they will see a big drop in playing time. Would that be enough of a wake up call for the company, or would they not care as they are growing their sales and have the money in the bank?

Hi there, to be honest I've been very disappointed with fm24 so far and it's somewhat deflated me. The editor is not behaving as it did last year, meaning I have to recreate the files from scratch. I am hoping one of the early SI (regular?) patches would save me a good bit of work, but I have a feeling the editor is not high on their list of priorities. In which case I will continue rebuilding the file. Approximate release date? Beginning of December I reckon.

Edit: I have just looked through the amount of bugs being reported with the editor. I have decided I will not be touching my file until the editor is in an acceptable state for working on. Very frustrating. 

There will be. I've started work on it but will be doing lots of testing, and hope the editor is bug free. 

I have holidayed up to 2098. I'll update the link at the top of the page and people can make their own mind's up. I think it is better for realism sake. I'll share with you some of the movers and shakers in the holiday save. Bear in mind that it is a save that only had one nation as playable (N Ireland) and the rest was the top division in each league in Europe on view only. So the results will only be going on reputation rather than AI squad building and proper full detail matches. I also had other editor files in place that I use. 

The European Cup had lots of English winners, with periods of Spanish and German dominance. Newcastle, Liverpool, Man Utd, Real Madrid, and Bayern feature alot. There was quite a large variety of runners up teams which was good to see. There was more of a mixture in the ECWC, I noted that Freiburg and AFC Bournemouth were amongst the winners. The UEFA Cup was dominated mainly by English clubs. 

Delving into a few selected nations...In Italy the big surprise was that Spezia Calcio became a major force from the 2050s onwards. It all sort of began with a runner up position in the ECWC in 2049, and won it in 2055. They ruled Serie A for decades, and were runners up in the EC in 2068, 2069, 2071, 2076, 2078, 2080, 2084, and 2085. They eventually won it in 2092 and then again in 2097!

France saw PSG fall away after 2042. Nantes and Nice were quite dominant. Man Utd ruled England in the 40s and 50s, and then there were lots of Newcastle, Liverpool, and Man City wins, with a sprinkling of other teams littered about. Real Madrid ruled Spain, with Barcelona only winning the league twice during those 75 years. Athletico, Mallorca, Elche, and Huesca were the only other 5 teams to win La Liga at various times between Real winning. 

Unfortunately I couldn't really dig deep into the finances of clubs due to NI teams filling up the rich list as they were the only detailed league. But with 2.5 billion less euros being dished out in prize money each year there is bound to be a difference. This has whet the appetite for me to fire up a new save, and hopefully it might inspire others as well. Have fun if you do. 

Hi @Riptor , 25m is appearance money for making the 1st round. There is then prize money in each round thereafter but it is not 25m each round. For making to the 2nd round it's 3m, 3rd round 5m, QF 7m, SF 10m, and Final winner gets 30m and runner up gets 15. 

But hold fire….. it's been raised on the SI forum (was it you?), that the finances in my file are too high. It's been raised before about the high prize money. My first thoughts were to keep it high as a big carrot for clubs but I hadn't realised that I had effectively given UEFA a purse 4.5 billion euros to dish out amongst the 4 European competitions, as opposed to a more realistic figure of just over 2 billion euros. I have redone the file and adjusted the finances to reflect this. The finances are much more weighted in the favour of the European Cup, and then the Cup Winners Cup. This in itself will add more reward for winning that domestic league or cup, rather than finishing 4th or 5th in the league and still guaranteeing a windfall. There's still money to be won but it's scaled down alot and the UEFA Cup is not as financially luxurious as the European Cup, which should be the case. 

I am currently running a test save just to see how the adusted finances effect things. All being well I'll upload the file by tomorrow.

I think you would have to copy the ECWC into a Continental file with the Champions League and Europa League in it to stop the duplication of teams. You would also need to have some order of competition importance so the ignore team rule knows when to ignore teams and when not to. I'm not sure if you just did the ECWC on it's own whether it would do what you want, due to duplicated teams. Feel free to experiment.

There's a tick box to ignore teams that are already picked to play in competitions. Off top of my head it's in Teams > Qualified Teams 

You'd have to edit the European continental competitions in the editor in advanced rules. Make the Conference League extinct and create the ECWC. You'd need to make sure clubs aren't entered into more than one competition, so it is quite a complicated mod to create. It would be possible but it's not something I would undertake. Google how to extract the competitions in the editor, there are useful guides out there, both textual and visual. 

You could load this file into the editor using the 23.0 database and then save the file again. Then you would need to test the rules in the editor. If that verifies then you would be able to use it. I'm not sure it will verify though, as a club in Iceland went bust in between 23.3 and 23.4 so the league structure changed. You could also try verifying the 98/99 season db in 23.4 and see if that works?

As my attentions have turned to amending this file this week, I decided that the Third Round of the UEFA Cup being played during the 2022 Qatar World Cup was annoying me. For this season only, the Third Round will be played in January. This will ensure clubs have full quota of players available. I anticipate this will be the last update to my file. For anyone using it, enjoy it.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've since discovered that the Players tab is where I needed to turn my attention to. The tab “Days Before Finals Competition for Squad Meet-Up”, would determine if there would be friendlies or not as many, or none at all. Thanks again for the great file.

Hi @Oni58 , I have been using your file and loving it. I have a question that I just can't fathom the answer to. I have been combining your file with a couple of my own for my saves, and have recently found a clash with international friendlies and major competition finals causing players to not play in the finals. Now I could rejig the calendar of my files but the most pain free solution is to move the dates in your file, BUT I cannot find where the International friendly dates are in your file. Where can I find them? The only dates I can see are the the competition ones (finals and qualifications). The problem dates occur on a 4 year cycle (2024, 2028, 2032 etc), and the fixtures are the 3 friendly dates in the last week of May (usually any 3 dates between the 20th and 29th May depending on the year). Would you be able to help me?

I was made aware of a problem today of players being on International duty for the First Round Second Leg matches of all 3 competitions. I have now adjusted the fixtures and created alternative fixtures to stop any clashing of dates. I have tested up to 2035 and I've found no more clashing (other than the November 2022 World Cup which remains as it is, and only affects the UEFA Cup 3rd Round). Version 3.13 available to download at the top right of the screen.

I will update this file to 23.4 when SI release the final final update that fixes the Iceland league. Currently this problem stops me verifying my continental file. Fingers crossed for fm24!

What a fantastic explanation of the sounds files here. I have been playing around with the fm23 sounds files and was trying to understand the match_files.xml, so this will be a great help. I know you posted this 5 years ago, but other than converting things to fmf files nothing has changed. I downloaded metz's paid for sounds file which is good quality. The only thing I am looking to do is to see what I can add or change for myself. Particularly interested in individual team chants, and multiple sounds for goals scored noises ie away goal celebration not as loud. You used to be able to add team and player specific chants many FM's ago, not sure if that's possible anymore?? This is an area of total neglect from SI, but for me, it adds so much immersion to the match day experience.

I have created a version 3 of this file, and have updated the link at the top of the page to replace version 2. The main changes are I have reverted back to involving all nations in all competitions, and have added the Scottish League Cup winners entry to the UEFA Cup as per UEFA rules in the 80s.

I am having awful trouble trying to keep the fa cup final at Wembley Stadium once I change the semi finals away from Wembley. If I make the semi finals use the home stadium then the final works for Wembley. BUT as soon as I introduce a 9 stadium pool to choose semi finals from, Wembley only works for the first season. Where I had previously set ‘Home’ in the Fixture Dates for the Semi Finals and replaced it with ‘Ask competition neutral (exclude home)’, Wembley stops being used after season 1. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

It's ok, I've worked things out and got it working.

I wasn't too sure about these tournaments so I have done a bit of reading about them. Honestly though, despite being around during the 80s they really did play second fiddle to the big UEFA competitions. I do plan on a version 3 after the last SI update as I may tweak the amount of countries in the EC and ECWC to include some more, but I won't be introducing any new competitions to the file, sorry.

I have released a new version of my 80s style European Competitions. There's been a major overhaul of the first version. Enjoy !
