Hello all you beautiful people. I have an opinion to ask that I'm sure some of you might be clued up on...

I've got a 2009 13-inch Macbook Pro, 4GB RAM and 250 GB HD space (and two external hard drives now to help with scratch disks/backups etc, 250GB and 1.5 TB). I've been needing to up the specs for a year or so because it's quite disappointing when I need it most. Peak time would be when I've got Safari, Photoshop, Indesign, Sketchup all running, with something rendering in the background. Really slow, frustrating to use then. Otherwise day-to-day it's fine.

I need to apparently service the battery which is fine. I'm not worried that about the display being 13-inch, it does the job, graphically it's fine. I'm going in tomorrow to get it looked at and/or sent off, if I do, I'll get it up to 8 GB RAM and 500 GB. Cost quoted was roughly... battery [if replaced] (£75-100), RAM (£65), HD (£100-150) and service/sendoff charge (£75) so total between £300-£400. Another option that someone floated was to just to invest another computer as a main one (say an iMac with student discount around £1050).

Now I've only got another year of uni left and full-time practice would mean me working on either an office desktop or laptop that they would provide. So a personal laptop would be enough otherwise. Is it worth actually investing in a new computer or just upgrade what I have?

Thought I hadn't or couldn't see much worse than Sri Lanka's less-than-half-a-test capitulation v Australia the other day... New Zealand are doing their best to prove me wrong. Day 2 Session 2 and they're already down a wicket in their second innings about 300 runs behind.

There are a lot of teams in dire straits atm... Sri Lanka and New Zealand are a bit of a shambles. India are getting worse. Only the likes of SA and England have settled teams. And Australia, Pakistan, Windies and Bangladesh are on the rise (at different levels obviously)

I'm sorry but this is complete and utter tripe. I'm not an all-encompassing follower of 'religion' as a concept, but if anything the idea of religion has actually gone and tried to do something about problems that exist. I'll take my own as an example. You are obliged to give a portion of your wealth to the poor and needy (and as far as I'm concerned, ensure that it gets to them), i.e. no bullshit about giving to charity for it to filter through administration and eventually end up where it's not required. Take the Eid that just passed. You are obliged to hand out a third of all meat that comes out of the day to the poor and needy. Again, directly. I fast for thirty days a year, every year. That'll be a fair proportion of life. Part of it is designed to show some kind of solidarity with those who suffer and give you some, as you say, perspective. And it's not even about charity; I sincerely believe that everyone enters and leaves this world as equals, and should be treated as such. All this, is because I believe in what you call "some bullshit deity". I don't feel any responsibility to my parents, family or friends whilst I do any of these things. I feel the need to thank this deity because it's worked for me. Coincidence, chance, placebo, you can call it whatever you like but it's faith for me. I don't feel the need to shove it down someone else's throat.

I actually despise the likes of you who think they have some kind of enlightened view of what happens in third world countries and then feel that you have some kind of moral high ground to criticise others. Fuck knows what made you bring religion into this discussion either. And as for "those poor sods", you should probably there are a fair proportion of them who believe in these so-called "deities".
