WOW! Great end to the season there mate winning the league. Is it now a case of job done or are you planning on staying? If you're staying I wouldn't worry about the Champions League, with this league win you can attract some quality players that should get you further in the champs league.

100% staying, hopefully I can build something long term - even if I don't I'll still play the save as long as I'm enjoying it and Orlando Pirates want me. Most I've consistently enjoyed a save of mine in a while.

The last month of our season. Could we win the Premier Soccer League title? Could we win Africa's top prize, the CAF Champions League? If we wanted to achieve those goals we would have do some major work, as we came into May 2nd in the PSL while we had to get past Mamelodi Sundowns in the Champions League semi-finals; with the tie level at 2-2 on aggregate following the first leg.

Champions! What an absolute rollercoaster end to the 2018/19 season! So many twists. I have given Orlando Pirates their first Premier Soccer League title since 2011, unfortunately I couldn't give them a first CAF Champions League trophy since 1995 but overall it was a great season. I don't even know where to start, so many things occurred in May.

It began with a sensational result over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Champions League semi-final second leg. Thembinkosi Lorch went on a mad one and scored four goals as we won 6-0 over our domestic rivals, unbelievable way to reach the final; where we'd face Wydad Casablanca, who themselves won big in the semi-finals after dismantling TP Mazembe 5-0 in their first leg. Before the CAF CL final, we had three huge PSL fixtures in a row. Black Leopards were defeated first on a day where Cape Town City dropped points, which put it into our hands at that moment - it seemed if we won all our final fixtures, including over Kaizer Chiefs, we'd win the title. It wasn't quite that simple.

Highlands Park gave us an almighty fright on 7 May, the bottom half club went two goals ahead and, in truth, we looked dead and buried. However, after some tactical changes and, according to right-back Happy Jele, a great team talk, we rallied to take a dramatic three points away from home by winning 2-3. At full-time there was a twist, Bidvest Wits had won 0-3 in their match so went top of the table on goal difference! It was no longer in our hands. After Highlands Park, the following match was the massive Soweto derby versus Kaizer Chiefs. Xola Mlambo put himself in Orlando Pirates folklore with a stunning free-kick (see below) to help us defeat the Chiefs and take a massive step towards the trophy.

Even better news followed, as Bidvest Wits had drew away to SuperSport United. That meant we were 1st with one match to play, two points away from the 2018/19 PSL title. A massive, but welcomed, distraction followed - the first leg of the CAF Champions League final with Wydad Casablanca. Despite that and fitness issues, we were missing three key players for most of this period as seen above (Lorch, Maela and Shonga), we won the opening leg 2-1 on home soil. Despite the eventual outcome, a huge result which kept momentum high. Days later came the huge final day of the Premier Soccer League, we faced SuperSport Utd (h) while Wits hosted Highlands Park.

We didn't produce a great performance, we just couldn't find a goal against SuperSport - worse news followed as Wits went one nil up on 88mins versus Highlands Park which sent them top of the table with just minutes left. I went all-out attack and subbed on our best player Thembinkosi Lorch, who was still suffering with fractured ribs. Not that you'd know, as the man himself came on and scored a dramatic winning goal which sent us back above Wits. The referee blew his whistle and we were crowned Premier Soccer League champions! Incredible, incredible end! Lorch, with a rib injury, the hero. Crazy! Sadly we did then lose the Champions League second leg following a dreadful performance.

Delighted nevertheless! The league was the priority, I was more tense for that than the continental final. I can't wait for next season already!

March was pretty bad but at least you gained some momentum in April with a couple of wins. Massive result over Juventud though which means your team can play well just need to find some consistent form.

April 2019 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

https://i.imgur.com/bBNf8Lz.png

March was woeful, there's no doubting that. Last month's form left us bottom of not only the regular season table but also the average points table. April must've been better, as we faced six matches in the Segunda División; three were against promotion-chasing Juventud, Danubio and Torque, while the other three were versus our relegation rivals Central Español, Rocha and Bella Vista. Quite the contrast.
https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png

Game 1: El Tanque Sisley (URU) vs. Central Español (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/zSoqLOe.png

Thoughts: Brilliant beginning! Vital three points over expected positional rivals Central Español, they made us work for it in the second half but we thoroughly merited the victory.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 2: Juventud (URU) vs. El Tanque Sisley (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/0jSJaax.png

https://media1.tenor.com/images/e986f3cda38e718a181ce57cfad77fe4/tenor.gif

Thoughts: Absolute scenes! Stunning performance away to the then league leaders. We were three goals (!) ahead at the interval, we were then forced to hold on as their expected onslaught arrived in the second half but the lads dug in deep and kept the points. What a result!

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 3: El Tanque Sisley (URU) vs. Danubio (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/uJaE2oK.png

Thoughts: After Juventud, we faced the new league leaders at the time - Danubio, a sizeable test at any stage. We would lose the game 2-3, but it was another proud performances from the team. They never gave up, got a goal back late on but we just ran out of time. Top effort nevertheless.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 4: Rocha (URU) vs. El Tanque Sisley (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/0QVoEBC.png

Thoughts: A trip to competitors Rocha gave a welcomed point, we probably should've taken all three as we were marginally the better team. But, hey, we keep our distance from the team below us which I see as a positive step.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 5: El Tanque Sisley (URU) vs. Bella Vista (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/DRPhcSy.png

Thoughts: We made no mistake against Bella Vista, a fellow rival. This victory was never in doubt, the game was pretty much dead after we went two goals ahead after twenty-one minutes. Important win, which also makes the Rocha point look better.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 6: Torque (URU) vs. El Tanque Sisley (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/SXbUrLU.png

Thoughts: April ended with defeat to second place Torque. We gave another great account of ourselves, but Torque were superb and deserved the eventual win. We made them work for it, though.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Recap: Fantastic month! I couldn't have asked for more, the squad have been absolutely fantastic and made sure we were giving 100% in every match. This run of form makes the tables look so much more encouraging. We sit 10th in the regular season standings, while we're one better (9th) in the average points table. Every month won't be like this, but we must keep picking up a good amount of points every month to keep the gap between us and the bottom two.

April 2019 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

https://i.imgur.com/5M5bPlo.png

What a month April was. Eight fixtures were scheduled across three competitions, which would be extended if we managed to advance in the cups. Even without that, we still had some mighty fixture congestion; including three games in six days towards the end of April. We've certainly been tested, as the critical stages of our season arrives. Here's how we got on.

What a crazy month. Ten (!) fixtures were played after we advanced in the CAF Champions League and the PSL even moved a league game into this month, thanks for that! All that is without our progression in the FA Cup, as we were eliminated by Baroka; I was forced to play a back-up line-up due to the aforementioned reasons. Overall though, I'm very pleased with how we've done this month; given all the prerequisites.

We only lost two matches, one was that FA Cup tie while the other was the first leg in the CAF CL versus Zamalek - which didn't mean much in the end as we won the home leg to go through to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, we've been drawn with fellow South African club Mamelodi Sundowns. The first leg has been played, which ended in an action-packed 2-2 draw; painful to concede an equaliser on 95mins, but two away-goals is a positive - the second leg promises to be a nervy encounter.

We also faced Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League, beating them 0-2 away from home; which was one of four league wins this month. Those wins and the fact we were undefeated in league action was huge, as the PSL title race is incredibly close. You can see the table below, we are sitting second but level on points with leaders and city rivals Kaizer Chiefs. That's not all, as Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City are just one and two points off respectively and both have a game in hand. We face fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs on the penultimate day, that could be a Soweto derby for the ages! Tense times ahead either way.

So to recap, the title race is very much alive and any one of four clubs could still win it with just one month left to play. We're one game away from the CAF Champions League final, a competition Orlando Pirates haven't won since 1995; though the board's expectation is to reach the final. There'll be no FA Cup glory for us this campaign, as we're out of that tournament. Disappointing for sure, but there's no doubting the PSL and CAF CL are way more important to players, staff, fans and board alike. May will be squeaky bum time, as Sir Alex would say.

March 2019 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

https://i.imgur.com/Z3EJrKw.png

The moment has arrived, my first campaign as El Tanque Sisley boss begins with six Segunda División fixtures. I wasn't sure what to expect coming into it, I was only hoping for positive performances - anything else was going to be a bonus.
https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png

Game 1: El Tanque Sisley (URU) vs. Miramar Misiones (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/YaRHW12.png

Thoughts: Defeat in match one. Pretty even match overall, but one that was only going to end one way - late winner for them.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 2: Villa Española (URU) vs. El Tanque Sisley (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/ay1H80y.png

Thoughts: As the screenshot states, we got lucky in game two after securing our first win of the season. Santiago Segovia's penalty gave us a big win.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 3: El Tanque Sisley (URU) vs. Albion (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/ahQcVlb.png

Thoughts: Albion beat us in game three, in what was a frustrating game to watch. Their opener was an OG and some horrific marking led to their second strike.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 4: Cerrito (URU) vs. El Tanque Sisley (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/gfCEO5n.png

Thoughts: Decent point picked up away to Cerrito, they are likely to be a relegation rival but they did beat Danubio on the first matchday so I was content.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 5: El Tanque Sisley (URU) vs. Villa Teresa (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/8tMijpD.png

Thoughts: Narrow loss in March's penultimate fixture, not much to say about that match - Villa Teresa deserved to win.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Game 6: Plaza Colonia (URU) vs. El Tanque Sisley (URU) (Segunda División)

https://i.imgur.com/nLBz2WO.png

Thoughts: Plaza Colonia inflicted our fourth loss of the season on 30 March. Expected, their goalscorers alone are far too good for this level; both have recent experience in the Argentine Primera División.

https://i.imgur.com/sYNF2qO.png
Recap: I am great at Football Manager, as you can see. I just can't get going in this save yet, I know it's early days but this is going poorly so far with El Tanque Sisley. Performances haven't been disastrous, but nor were they with Sud América and look how that turned out. This is the way it goes sometimes in Journeyman saves, on FM17 I got early success in Asia with Albirex Niigata (S) and everything rolled right from there. On FM19, it's a big struggle. All part of the 'fun' though, if you're wanting to read a successful Journeyman then this isn't the post!

March's results leaves me in a familiar position, bottom of both the regular season table and the average points table. On the plus side, if this carries on and I get the boot at least I won't get a relegation tally added to my résumé - all about taking the positives!

Tricky times, know from my own experience that South American football is pretty unforgiving at times! Sure you'll do better in your next job!

March 2019 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

The 2018-19 season continues into March 2019. Our predicament heading into the year's third month was positive, we sat 2nd in the Premier Soccer League and had already qualified for the knockout rounds of the CAF Champions League with two games to spare; we're also still in the FA Cup. A few friendlies were also scheduled due to an end of month free period, including a testimonial for Happy Jele.

Up and down month. Extremely disappointing opening two fixtures, both coming in the PSL against Bidvest Wits and Chippa United. We lost to title rivals Wits before drawing with bottom half side Chippa Utd, very poor results; ground lost in our quest for the league trophy. In other competitions, we've had more happier results. Petro de Luanda were defeated in the Champions League, prior to putting six past lower league Super Eagles in the FA Cup to advance to the quarter-finals; where we'll face Baroka. Unfortunately we didn't managed to win 100% of our Champions League group games, as we dropped points at home to bottom club Saoura. Standard. Progression is all that counts though, Zamalek (Egypt) await us. Lastly, both friendlies were won - including Jele's testimonial. In the PSL, we're 4pts off top with a game in hand.

I don't really consider performances in pre season as a measure really mate, as long as you play well in the regular season you're in with a shout of staying up.

For sure. Our opening fixtures are fairly kind, against a few teams that many would expect to be around us at the bottom.
