In the winter break, we took a trip to the Middle East to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to face Al-Ahli Saudi, Shabab Al-Ahli, Al-Gharafa and Al Ain - we beat all four of them, José María Aranburu was in superb form scoring seven goals versus Shabab Al-Ahli, Al-Gharafa and Al Ain. Upon returning to Austria, we got our Tipico Bundesliga campaign back underway with an away match against Guntamatic Ried. Josef Fett got the game's only goal to secure the points, in what was one of, if not the, first start under my management. The 28-year old has barely featured for me, that goal helps his cause massively.

Days later we met Torino in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League first knockout round, at home. They ended the match as 0–1 winners, very much deserving of the victory but we didn't play too badly. Prior to the second leg, we had a league match with Flyeralarm Admira which ended up being a rather dire affair as it ended goalless. Once again we would've closed the gap to Red Bull Salzburg with a win because they dropped points before our match, predictably we didn't win. Full attention turned to Turin for the second leg in Europe vs. Torino. It was pretty much just like leg one, except they converted more of their chances to lead 4–0 on aggregate; Aranburu got us a consolation.

That's our European journey over. Six straight Bundesliga fixtures were to come. Aranburu made it three goals in two fixtures with a brace to get us a win over Bauwelt Koch Mattersburg, but failed to find the net in the following match with Salzburg as we lost 1–2 at the Generali-Arena. If the title race wasn't already over, it was now. They are a ridiculous team. Things got worse as we lost to fierce rivals Rapid Vienna in the following match, Shûta Horio scored for them as he always seems to do against us. Thankfully, we stopped the rot of back-to-back losses with back-to-back victories in the Bundesliga over Ried and RZ Pellets WAC.

Both at home. Four goals were scored versus Ried, Erwin Ambs got two goals between strikes from Paul Bernard and Juan Pardo - a new signing. Pardo scored again against RZ Pellets WAC, as did Ambs. The final match of March was a defeat though, at the hands of Puntigamer Sturm Graz. Heading into the final two months of the scheduled season, we are still 2nd in the Bundesliga but rivals Rapid have closed the gap from 4pts to 2pts; thanks to a very impressive victory away to Salzburg recently. Talking of Salzburg, the gap to them is 16pts; was 15pts. Elsewhere, we're out of Europe but remain in the Austrian Cup.

Two came in and two went out in the transfer window.

INS:
Manuel Jesús (Loan, CB, Real Betis)
Juan Pardo (Loan, LW, Porto)

Jesús was signed to add depth at centre-back, yet to impress. Likewise Pardo, for left wing. Slow start to his life in Vienna but he has come good lately, has taken Gerardus Simon's spot in the first eleven.

OUTS:
Maciej Czaplinski (Loan, RW, Osmanlıspor)
José Eduardo (£180k, RB, Atlético Paranaense)

Czaplinski, my back-up RW, wanted a loan move, got one to Turkish football. Eduardo was back-up RB, but wanted out after hardly featuring - returns to his homeland with Paranaense.

2054 - November and December:
2054 draws to a close with seven Tipico Bundesliga fixtures and three critical UEFA Europa League group matches.

Group G's Matchday 4 in the Europa League saw us host Süper Lig outfit Bursaspor, a side we beat 0–1 on their patch in October. Due to the group circumstance as mentioned previously, a win here probably would've secured us our progression but sadly Bursaspor held us to a tie to gain a point. Then came Red Bull Salzburg in the league, their machine just keeps on churning as they beat us 3–0 - makes a change to all those 1–0 losses we've had versus them! We responded with a 5–1 hammering of Bauwelt Koch Mattersburg, José María Aranburu netted a hat-trick while Nils Eschweiler got two. Super win.

That was as good as it got for a couple of weeks as we then went on a run of three straight defeats which led to a four winless streak. Arsenal beat us 0–4 in Europe as expected, but we suffered league losses to the two sides chasing us - Rapid Vienna (1–3) and Puntigamer Sturm Graz (1–0). The fourth match in this spell was actually a good result, we drew 0–0 in Israel away to Hapoel Beer-Sheva which confirmed us as group runners-up as Arsenal beat Bursaspor in Group G's other encounter. We'll faced Torino (ITA) in the first knockout round. Never easy against a 'top five' league team but I'm looking forward to it, we have a chance.

Winning ways resumed with victories over Wiener Neustadt (9th) and RZ Pellets WAC (10th), both on the road. Aranburu got the game's only goal to get past Wiener, he also got a goal in the nil-two win over the league's bottom club. The year finished with a disappointing draw at home to Wacker Innsbruck, Aranburu did score again though. Overall, a pretty poor two months as we only scored in five of the ten matches. However, the full picture is very pleasing. We're still 2nd in the Bundesliga and we're into the knockout rounds of the Europa League. We're also still in the Austrian Cup, KSV (known as Kapfenberger in-game) await in the quarter-finals. Salzburg are a run away force, a massive slip-up is needed if we are to win the title. 2nd would be a big improvement anyway.

2054 - September and October:
After winning all but one of our eleven opening fixtures in all competitions with Austria Vienna, we headed into September and October 2054 in confident mood as we looked to keep on the tails of Red Bull Salzburg but also extend the gap inside the top two UEFA Champions League places.

RZ Pellets WAC were our first opponents of September, we beat them 4–0 at the Generali-Arena meaning we had won back-to-back league matches by a four-nil margin after that victory over Bauwelt Koch Mattersburg on 30 August. The match will be memorable for English youngster Will Wall who scored his first-ever goal in his first league appearance for goal two. Our UEFA Europa League group campaign got underway on 17 September with a trip to London, England to face Arsenal. They completely outclassed us to win by four goals to zero, we didn't turn up but even if we did Arsenal probably still would've won by a few goals.

Three days later, we drew our first match this season to rivals Rapid Vienna. It was a lacklustre performance, José María Aranburu saved us a point. It was disappointing to draw with our rivals, but it was more disappointing as Red Bull Salzburg actually dropped points the day before (draw with Puntigamer Sturm Graz) so we could've closed the gap to just one point; instead, it remained three. The Austrian Cup second round saw us meet CASHPOINT SCR Altach of the Sky Go Erste Liga. I fielded a rotated eleven due to fixture congestion but it didn't show as our back-up team won 0–3 with Thomas Dierks scoring twice.

A 0–3 cup win was followed by a 4–0 league win, over Wiener Neustadt. Aranburu scored as did Elvis Bento, but the star man was left-winger Gerardus Simon who netted a brace. Simon has really stepped up, originally signed as back-up he became first choice after Tim Schmidt left and has been outstanding; showing so again a match later as he scored in a Matchday 2 UEL match-up with Hapoel Beer-Sheva, Paul Bernard also got a goal. Hapoel at home was October's opening game, the second was in the league against Sturm Graz at home. It looked like we were going to drop points at 1–1 on 89mins, but we secured the points via a sensational 90' goal from Erwin Ambs (see below).

Wacker Innsbruck hosted us on MD11 of the Tipico Bundesliga, we gave them no gifts for their hospitality as we cruised to a 1–4 win after strikes from Bento, Aranburu, Simon and Nils Eschweiler. That was our fourth win this season by scoring four goals, another one came a few weeks later in the cup. Before that, we got a massive win in the Europa League over Bursaspor. Simon scored on 59mins to achieve us back-to-back UEL wins. With Arsenal running clear with 3/3 wins and Hapoel at the bottom with 3/3 losses, a win at home to Bursaspor on MD4 should be enough for us to qualify. That other four goal win, in the cup, was versus Austria Lustenau (A). Were 2–0 down though!

Due to that cup fixture, our match set for the weekend before was postponed and rescheduled. Red Bull Salzburg, the club we are chasing, still played and won, meaning we're now six points behind but do have a game in hand. The gap remained six as we both won in October's final encounter, we beat Flyeralarm Admira 1–2 cheers to late strikes from Aranburu and Eschweiler. Salzburg beat Mattersburg. So, only two non-wins in these two months with nine victories, all of the last eight in a row! Yet, we're 2nd in both Bundesliga and Europa League. Looking very good though! Very happy. Award/squad stats are below.

2054 - June to August:
My first full season with Austria Vienna begins. After guiding the club from 4th (11pts behind) to 3rd in my opening six months, I thought that got us from a UEFA Europa League third qualifying round starting spot to a group stage start. However, that wasn't the case as, despite them being the league rules, it was superseded by the Austrian Cup winners - who were (second tier!) LASK, so they therefore get the group stage berth and we were relegated down to the 3QR. That 11pt comeback was all for nothing - thought it was too good to be true. FM'd!

We ended last season's United States tour with a match at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey against the New York Red Bulls, we easily beat Red Bull Salzburg's sister club 0–4. After a short off-season, the players returned for a tour closer to home - to Romania. Matches were scheduled versus Astra Giurgiu and Iași as well as a double header in-between against the two Poli Timișoara clubs in ACS and ASU. We returned home from Romania with four wins in four, scoring three plus goals in all matches. Impressive pre-season from us. Needed.

Our first competitive fixture of 2054–55 came in the Austrian Cup first round against newly-promoted Flyeralarm Admira at home, we eased into round two thanks to a brace from José María Aranburu and a returning goal from Johann Adamczyk, who was out on loan last campaign - I had planned to use him but unfortunately, as you'll see below, I was forced to sell him soon after. A week after facing Admira, the first league match of the new season was played as we faced Wiener Neustadt and we came away with the win thanks to a second consecutive Aranburu double. Due to LASK's heroics, we were put in the UEL 3QR and made to face Hungary's Videoton.

The first leg, away, with Videoton was played on 30 July, the month's final encounter. We scored three unanswered goals at the Sóstói Stadion to secure a dominant victory, Nils Eschweiler got a brace himself to go with an Erwin Ambs strike. Tie all but over, which enabled us to rest key players in leg two. After Videoton leg one, we played Wacker Innsbruck in the Tipico Bundesliga and subsequently made it four competitive wins in a row with a 2–0 win on our own patch. That streak was put to five and then to six following wins over Videoton and Guntamatic Ried. Videoton were defeated 3–1 (6–1 agg.) while Ried were beaten 0–1. Daniel Aengenheister scored three of the four goals.

After six straight victories, our run of top results came to an end over the only other Bundesliga 100%ers in Red Bull Salzburg. The champions of the last three seasons, by a huge distance, ended our streak whilst continuing theirs with a narrow one-goal win. That's my third meeting with Salzburg since joining Austria Vienna, all three have basically been the exact same - decent performance, but Salzburg just a little bit better and grab one goal to win it. Frustrating to say the least. Thankfully, we have responded superbly with four consecutive wins in all competitions.

In the Europa League play-off round, we were drawn to face Anorthosis Famagusta. Kind draw. We ended up advancing 0–5 on aggregate following a 3–0 win in Vienna and a 0–2 win in Larnaca, Cyprus. Group stages here we come! In-between the Anorthosis encounters, we had a league meeting with Admira - just like in the cup, we made light work of them and won 2–0. After Anorthosis, the final match of these months came against Bauwelt Koch Mattersburg. We won it in style, gaining the three points with a 0–4 victory at the Pappelstadion - Ambs notching two late goals.

Overall, an excellent start to the campaign. A loss to the best team in the country the only blemish. After 6 games, we sit 2nd with 15pts after 5/6 wins - three points clear of Puntigamer Sturm Graz. Three off Salzburg, we will need to keep going incase they drop off. That's not our battle though, I want and the board want a 2nd place finish which would give us UEFA Champions League football for next season. We remain in the Austrian Cup and have got into the group stages of Europe. In our group, we'll face Arsenal (ENG), Bursaspor (TUR) and Hapoel Beer-Sheva (ISR). Arsenal aside, a very capable draw.

It was a somewhat uncomfortable transfer window. I couldn't really sign any of my key targets due to a lack of funds, whilst the club board went over me a few times to sell some first-team players who, despite not being absolutely crucial, I didn't want to lose as it would weaken the squad depth.

INS:
Mohammed Kawarmala (Loan, CM, Club Brugge)
Gerardus Simon (Loan, LW, Standard Liège)
Edward Tetteh (Loan, LB, Lille)
Paul Bernard (Free, CM, Bordeaux)
Neto (Loan, CB, Atlético Mineiro)
David Farías (Loan, GK, Argentinos Juniors)

In the end, I was pleased with my signings despite the budget restraints. Kawarmala is a depth for midfield signing, yet to feature that much. Simon was signed to be back-up to Tim Schmidt, but has turned into first choice as Schmidt left us. Very good thus far. Tetteh is a back-up left-back. Bernard is Alex Hernández's replacement, he has been excellent so far. Neto is a back-up central defender, impressed with him so far. Farías was signed to be a second/third-choice 'keeper, but has become number one due to an injury to Germán Madrigales. Loanee Madrigales was terrific last season and good early on this, but Farías has been top notch thus far so Madrigales will struggle to get his spot back.

OUTS (notable):
Marc Klose (Loan, LB, LASK)
Kamil Moskal (-, CB, Retired)
Alex Hernández (Free, CM, Granada)
Marko Dzaja (£725k, CM, Werder Bremen)
Tim Schmidt (£2.6m, LW, Toulouse)
Luís Duarte (£525k, CM, Ingolstadt)
Johann Adamczyk (£4.4m, FW, Paris Saint-Germain)
Dennis Blaikner (Loan, CB, Werder Bremen)

Klose wanted a loan move and got one, while Moskal retired despite me wanting him to reconsider. Hernández was a big loss, brilliant last campaign but was ageing so Bernard, 23, is a great replacement. Dzaja is a promising talent, Bremen snapped him up and gave us a good fee. Duarte and Blaikner wanted their respective moves and got them. Schmidt and Adamczyk were nothing to do with me, the board annoyingly accepted the offers themselves. I couldn't even protest as I had already done it with a different player before, so the game didn't allow me these times - stupid but hey-ho. I didn't want any of them to go, but if the board sold Aranburu or Eschweiler I may have departed the club in protest. Thankfully, the transfer business hasn't affected us on the pitch.

On 4 April, we faced Wacker Innsbruck at the Tivoli Stadion. Erwin Ambs went onto score the winning goal to secure us three points. That was our sixth straight victory, but that streak was ended by Red Bull Salzburg a week later; they beat us by one single goal, just like in February. Positive signs to only be narrowly losing to the far and away leaders Salzburg. We rebounded with back-to-back victories over Guntamatic Ried and, most importantly, Bauwelt Koch Mattersburg. Ried were beaten by two goals to one after a brace from Alex Hernández, a man who then scored the winning goal over Mattersburg for a 1–2 scoreline. Huge three points!

That win over Ried took us above Mattersburg on goal difference as they lost to Salzburg the next day, prior to our meeting the following week. Hernández netted again, this time with an 63rd minute beauty - just like last post, see below! Three big goals in two games from Hernández, who sadly will be leaving us at the end of the season after he agreed a pre-contract with Granada of Spain during my first months. Disappointing, but I've already got a replacement signed for when he goes. For now, he's a key player. Anyway, the win over Mattersburg put us three points ahead of the team that once led us by 11pts when I joined.

Unfortunately, in the next match, we lost to rivals Rapid Vienna 2–1 at their Allianz Stadion home, thankfully Mattersburg dropped points in a draw with Wacker. That put us 2pts clear of 4th with two matches to play, we won our following match at home to Puntigamer Sturm Graz by two strikes to nil; from Nils Eschweiler and José María Aranburu. Mattersburg also won though, winning by the same scoreline over Ried. So, heading into the final day we visited Wiener Neustadt while Mattersburg were also away from home to Rapid. We frustratingly lost to Wiener 2–1, despite leading early. Luckily for us, our big rivals Rapid did us a favour by beating Mattersburg. 3rd!

3rd is a big deal. 4th would've put us in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, but 3rd means we are directly into the group stages of the competition the board wanted me to qualify us for. Not that you could tell by the aftermath, the board have subsequently put my job status at 'very insecure'. Very bizarre. I exceeded expectations, they wanted Europa League and I got it for them; but overturned an 11pt gap to make the GS qualification spot rather than the 3QR which is where they sat when I was appointed. There have been zero player mishaps or anything, it has all been plain sailing off the pitch and I only lost 5 games; two to Salzburg - but gained 32 points overall!

Could be a short spell in Vienna! Hope not, feel I've got a great platform to build upon. We'll see. To end the season, we're currently on a tour of the United States. In game one, we demolished Bethlehem Steel of the United Soccer League by five goals to nil. In game two, we'll face the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer at Red Bull Arena. Two awards won are below, as well as the squad stats.

Late edit: I just had a look around the board confidence, it seems I'm getting the blame for "bad performances in all competitions" - I joined when they were out of everything bar the league, which has been improved. Yet on the individual competition confidence screen, it says they aren't judging on past comps and are happy with the league... The quirky side of Football Manager showing once more.

2054 - January to March:
I've started my new job with Austria Vienna. I joined at a near-perfect time, during the mid-season break meaning I had a friendly period to get my ideas across as well as a transfer window there if needed. All the board want is a league placing for the UEFA Europa League next season. With us being 13 points off of 2nd (UEFA Champions League) and 11 points off 3rd (Europa League), my aim as to keep the club 4th (also UEL) and fend off the clubs below us.

I enjoyed the four friendlies I was able to play with my new team, we got wins over Fussballakademie Linz, Vaduz and Thun but did narrowly lose to Slovacko. It was a good spell with the players, my two new signings (see below) José María Aranburu and Elvis Bento have settled in terrifically, striker Aranburu notched eight goals in those friendlies while midfielder Bento got one. I was confident heading into my first competitive match in charge of the club - Wacker Innsbruck, at home.

It was the best possible beginning to life in Vienna as I guided the club to a 4–1 victory, Bento scored the opener prior to goals from Daniel Aengenheister and Aranburu (x2). That's the club's joint-best goal differential win all season, the most goals they've scored in a victorious league match all campaign. Excellent performance. We then faced runaway Bundesliga leaders Red Bull Salzburg days later, where we performed very well once more but unfortunately they nicked the three points after a Karl Schneeberger goal got them a 1–0 win. The fixture list didn't get any easier with Bauwelt Koch Mattersburg (3rd) and Vienna derby rivals Rapid (2nd) coming in two of the next three.

Mattersburg arrived first on 15 February at the Generali-Arena, we got a goalless draw with the team above us in the table. Of course would've liked all three points, but can't complain with a point. Before facing Rapid, we played Guntamatic Ried away. This was the first bad performance under my management, Ried beat us 3–1 and were fully deserving of the points; Aranburu did make it 2–1 at one point but it wasn't enough. It was to be four winless matches next time out as we tied 0–0 with Rapid Vienna, but the performance was much improved. No win in four, but those were tough fixtures (Ried aside). After this, a run of more friendlier fixtures followed.

A first of two meetings inside a week with Wiener Neustadt was played on 25 February, it was a rearranged fixture from earlier in the season; our game in hand on those above. We actually dropped to 6th due to that winless spell, but shot back up to 4th after we beat Wiener 3–2 via goals from Nils Eschweiler, Bento and Erwin Ambs. Puntigamer Sturm Graz were our next opponents on the road, we made it two straight wins after Ambs got two goals in as many matches but we only tasted victory thanks to a dramatic late winner from Alex Hernández, it was a stunner too - see it below! Another late goal would come in the second match-up with Wiener Neustadt on 7 March 2054.

This time, however, it was much less dramatic and much less spectacular as Tim Schmidt got a tap-in to make 2–0 late on, Eschweiler had given us the lead; as he did on 25 February. One week later, we faced rock bottom SKN St. Pölten on home turf. Despite their woefulness, St. Pölten gave us a good test throughout the ninety minutes but thankfully we went away happiest as season top goalscorer Luis Sánchez, returning from lengthy injury, returned with a winning strike. Finally, to end my opening months with Austria Vienna, we beat RZ Pellets WAC (known as Wolfsberger in-game) 1–4 to make it five straight wins. Superb run of form!

That win in Wolfsberg was actually crucial, as Ried (team below us) and Mattersburg (team above us) both lost their matches. That means we sit just 2 points off 3rd and 6 points ahead of 5th. We've closed the gap to 3rd from 11pts to 2pts, while now only 8pts off the Champions League places (previously 13pts). Very happy with the impact I've made, 3rd is a real possibility but 2nd might just be out the question with seven games to play - you never know, we'd need them to slip up even more but do play them once more this campaign so we'll see. I just want Europa League football for next season, as do the board. Award/squad stats/transfers are below.

2052 - The Job Search:
After leaving Shakhtar Donetsk in 2052 following largely successful times, I headed to the job centre in hope of finding a new job. My aim was to get a club in similar standing to Shakhtar, i.e. a big club in a country capable of winning their domestic trophies as well as putting a fight up in European competition.

I departed Ukrainian football on 6 June 2052, it took until May 2053 until I found a job I was interested in. Panathinaikos of the Superleague Greece were that first team, the Greek top tier champions in two of the last four seasons. I eventually got an interview, took it and it went well and they eventually offered me the job. However, there were other posts open that took my fancy so I delayed Panathinaikos twice, to which they accepted both times. On their third approach, I still hadn't heard back from others properly so decided to turn down Panathinaikos; out of fairness to them, as their pre-season and UEFA Europa League qualifiers were starting soon.

During that period, Vorskla offered me an interview to replace their manager. I rejected their interview, not wanting to return to Ukraine. Zorya Luhansk, also in Ukraine, offered an interview too - I gave the same response. The reason I rejected Panathinaikos was because the Benfica and Ajax jobs became available. Benfica was a long shot but Ajax was possible. Both gave me interviews but both chose different managers. So my gamble of rejecting Panathinaikos backfired but I still think waiting for Benfica and Ajax was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, that left me right back at square one with no jobs that I fancied open. I subsequently holidayed month-by-month to wait for other departures.

Another Ukrainian club came in for me, Olexandriуa, but I rejected their advances too. Back when Panathinaikos were interested, Standard Liège of Belgium were too. I was semi-interested, but chose not to apply or declare interest back then. However, they became open again this time around after my holidaying. I applied this time. Which I also did for Austria Vienna, who sacked their manager. Austria Vienna were first to give me an interview, before offering me the job prior to Standard even responding. I immediately accepted Austria Vienna's offer on 15 December 2053.

I am the new manager of Austria Vienna in the Tipico Bundesliga! Very happy, my first taste of Austrian football on Football Manager. They've won 34 league titles, 10 since the save began including two of the last six. 38 ÖFB Cups have been won, 11 in the save; the current holders. As for the now, they currently sit 4th in the league table but are out of the Champions League/Europa League and the ÖFB Cup, meaning I just have the league to focus on - the board are expecting us to secure UEL football (3rd to 5th/6th). I start my new role during the winter break, so will have a friendly period to settle in as well as a transfer window.

We came into it two points off leaders Vorskla, and we played them in the split's opening fixture. Sadly, it was Vorskla who went home celebrating as they went five points clear with a 1–0 victory. Things then went from bad to worse as we lost back-to-back matches to Chornomorets Odesa and Karpaty whilst Vorskla won both times versus Dynamo Kyiv and Chornomorets. That put the gap to twelve points heading into the last seven matches. Title race all but over. We stopped the rot slightly by going five undefeated in the league, but only winning two of those. We beat Dynamo, drew three in a row to Olexandriуa, Vorskla and Chornomorets.

Up until that last Chornomorets draw, Vorskla had actually gone three winless but we failed to make them pay. On 18 May 2052, when we drew with Chornomorets, Vorskla beat Dynamo Kyiv 4–0 on their home turf to secure themselves a very much deserved 2051–52 Premier League title. Quite the achievement, fair play to them. Despicable from us though, we only just ended up scraping second place with one win in our last three. Karpaty were defeated 3–0, before we lost 0–2 to Olexandriуa and drew goalless with Dynamo. After the 32 games, we finish 2nd - a whole fifteen points off champions Vorskla. Dire way to end my reign as Shakhtar Donetsk manager.

Somehow, we got a few awards throughout this period which can be seen below as well as the squad stats and my resignation.

Frustrating way to end things with Shakhtar, but it is what it is. Onto the next job!

A home friendly with Viitorul came prior to a visit to Austria and Switzerland to play Austria Vienna, Winterthur and Liefering. Three wins from four came during the mid-season break. Then came the UEFA Champions League knockout round first leg with Manchester City. After finishing 2nd in Group G, we were drawn out a very difficult knockout round encounter. These two legs were more of the same as we got when we faced Real Madrid in the group stage, we lost on both occasions but performed admirably. A little bit more luck and we may have upset the odds, but Man. City advanced thanks to a 0–2 win in Donetsk and a 1–0 win in Manchester.

That means we'll put full focus on securing a twelfth straight league title for Shakhtar Donetsk. In-between the UCL legs we had a friendly win over Arsenal Kyiv Shchaslyve, a Premier League draw with Metalurg Zaporizhia and a narrow victory over Karpaty. After the Man. City second leg, we lost to Zorya Luhansk, drew with Dynamo Kyiv and won a friendly over HU ZIDMU-Spartak Zaporizhia. Those dropped points vs. Zorya and Dynamo were costly, as Vorskla have hit some form and subsequently overtaken us into 1st. The ten-game split is upcoming in the final months of the season, we currently sit 2pts off Vorskla. Form must improve, we still play them twice so it's far from over.

Three in, six out in the transfer window.

INS:
Andrea Piazza (£6.5m, RWB, Norwich City)
Ewerton Nery (Free, GK, Figueirense)
Lubomir Novy (Loan, CM, STVV)

Piazza was signed to play RWB in our new system as we were using out-of-position right-back Vadym Berezovskyi there. Iffy performances so far from Piazza. Nery is our new back-up 'keeper as Edmundo Teixeira departed. Novy is also signed for squad depth, replacing the outgoing Marcos Vinicius.

OUTS (notable):
Edmundo Teixeira (£1.7m, GK, Mainz)
Marcos Vinicius (£1.5m, CM, Real Betis)
Matija Gomelt (Loan, LB, Espanyol)
Arthur Smits (£1.7m, LB, ASU Politehnica Timișoara)

Teixeira wanted out, had barely featured. Vinicius is the biggest loss, I didn't want to lose him but his contract was expiring in June and he didn't want to sign a new contract so subsequently got a pre-contract with Betis. I managed to get Betis to buy him instantly for a fee, rather than for nothing in June. Gomelt was out of favour, wanted to sell him permanently but only got loan interest. Smits is a 23-year old but has been out on loan or in the reserves throughout my whole tenure, time he left for the good of his career.

Thanks @r96Skinner! The issue I now have is whether to stay on board with Clyde or not. The main problem is that this save is all about winning titles and awards, and whilst we have done incredibly to get promoted, we still haven't won a trophy as we only went up through the playoffs, and we will have literally no chance of winning League One for at least a couple of seasons, and I don't really have time for that! But equally I'm quite attached to the club and players and would want to give it a go and leaving by no means guarantees me a trophy elsewhere and I will have to go through the squad building process again.

Tough call! Based on your goal, leaving may well be best - depends on what jobs are open I guess!

2051 - November and December:
2051 comes to a close with Shakhtar Donetsk. Eleven matches were played throughout November and December, including the killer end period of our UEFA Champions League group stage run as we aimed to reach a further round.

One competition we won't be winning this season is the Ukrainian Cup, after we failed to overturn a 1–4 defeat in leg one over Vorskla by drawing 1–1 in leg two. Vorskla advance, very disappointing as it means I won't be able to taste Ukrainian Cup success as I'll be leaving the club at the end of the current season. Very odd how I've failed to win that, losing two finals to lowly Desna is a bigger achievement I'd say. That cup draw made it three without winning, that streak was even extended to seven as we didn't win any of our next four matches. Days after Vorskla, we lost away to overachieving Chornomorets Odesa despite a Júnior goal.

Then came a meeting with Real Madrid in the Champions League on Matchday 4. We lost, as expected, but gave it a very good go as we did in the previous match-up. Pedro Hernández put them two goals ahead, before we remarkably got the score back level with goals from Jonas Marchand and Marcos Vinicius. However, it was shortlived hope as Hernández scored his hat-trick sealing goal seconds after Vinicius' goal. Narrow loss. That put us 4th heading into the final two matchdays, but only one point off Anderlecht and Sporting CP who both had to play runaway leaders Real once more whereas we didn't.

We again came from two goals down a match later versus title rivals Vorskla. Vladyslav Ischenko put them clear at the interval, but we scrapped an important point via two strikes in the final twenty minutes from Júnior and Paulinho. The winless run continued into friendly football as Genk of Belgium got the better of us 0–1. At this point, I decided to create an all-new tactic. Our new system is a fairly simple 3-5-2, which I have rarely played ever as I much favour four at the back and two wingers but decided to try as, as you could see, my usual stuff wasn't working. This new tactic worked wonders, we then went six undefeated; winning five of those six.

The first match with the new system was to relegation-threatened Sudnobudivnyk Mykolaiv, we annihilated them by four goals to one at the Donbass Arena; defender Maxim Djioev opened the scoring prior to the usual suspects of Luis Arias and Júnior netting. Another four goals followed in our next match, this time wholly unexpected. It came in the away UCL match in Bruges versus Anderlecht. Arias, an own-goal, Júnior and Richárd Fekecs got on the scoresheet to secure a memorable away victory in the Champions League. That put us in a prime position to reach my expectation of UEFA Europa League football. A Matchday 6 fight for 2nd with Sporting was to come.

Before that hosting of Sporting, we continued our Premier League campaign with a 0–3 victory in Lutsk versus Volyn, Arias with a brace. Then came a dramatic final day meeting with Sporting in Europe, a win or draw would've sealed our knockout round spot whilst a defeat more than likely would be enough for the Europa League as Anderlecht were sure to lose to Real Madrid. As expected, Real made light work of Anderlecht so the key battle was our match. Fekecs gave us a very early lead on 7mins, it remained 0–1 until 78mins when Colombian Nelson Barragán equalised. They dominated the final twelve minutes and were awarded a penalty in the final moments...

Step forward Sérgio Valente, our goalkeeper came up big and saved an Adrián Cortez penalty to keep the scores tied! Huge save! It ended all square, meaning we have advanced into the UCL knockout stages for, what I believe is, the first time in the save. Massive improvement on my tenure so far which ended in winless group stage eliminations. Bring on the knockout round, where we'll face twenty-one time English Premier League champions Manchester City. We ended the year with league matches against the bottom two, Desna (11th) and Mariupol (12th). Unlike in Ukrainian Cup finals, we battered Desna 4–0 and beat winless Mariupol 0–2.

Heading into the new year of 2052 and my final six/seven months with Shakhtar Donetsk, we are top of the table by two points; Vorskla still staying close. In the Champions League after the holiday season, a first for Shakhtar since 2023 (!) when they lost out to AC Milan. Sadly out the domestic cup, but at least won the Super Cup back in July. Loads of awards below, as well as a few records and the squad statistics.

2051 - September and October:
A packed schedule was to come in September and October 2051 with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Goals galore in these two months, not always in our favour. Four of them came in a match with Desna, which we won without conceding on 2 September; Heleno Santos scoring twice. He then got a hat-trick in a 9–0 friendly win over Stal-2 Alchevsk, but Luis Arias went one better and notched five. It was Arias who then scored the winner in a league match with winless basement boys Mariupol (known as Illichivets in-game) a week later. That was played on a Friday, allowing us four days to prepare for our UEFA Champions League Group G opener against Anderlecht. It didn't do much as, despite being the better team, it was the Belgians who went away with the points (1–2).

We put that Matchday 1 UCL defeat behind us with a Premier League victory over Metalurg Zaporizhia, that man Arias grabbing a hat-trick. Our summer signing scored three further goals in his next two matches. One came in a heavy Ukrainian Cup third round first leg loss to Vorskla, who were absolutely incredible and won it after their striker Anton Ivanov scored all four goals. Royally battered 4–1. We have the second leg still to come, but face a tough ask to advance; needing a 3–0 victory as it stands. Arias scored the other two of those aforementioned goals in a Donbass Arena win over Karpaty in the league. Next up? MD2 in the UCL versus Sporting CP - my 1,200th career match!

At the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, we achieved the first group stage win in the Champions League under my management; first for the club since October 2046. We won 1–3, Richard van der Meulen and Arias puts us two goals ahead inside six minutes. A great start, but Sporting got one back through Jonathan Olmedo on 29mins and looked like levelling it up until Fábio Quinteiro got sent off eleven minutes after. That was a massive boost for us, we went onto dominate the game and scored a third late on via Richárd Fekecs. Big win! Much needed ahead of the double header with Real Madrid on Matchdays 3 and 4.

Two straight wins became three as we then got three points in the Premier League by defeating Zorya Luhansk 0–2 at the Avanhard Stadium, Alexey Pavlov scoring before Marcos Vinicius made it two. However, that winning streak was put down on 18 October as Olexandriуa dismantled us 3–1 on their turf, similar to that Vorskla cup defeat - just didn't turn up at all. The big derby with Dynamo Kyiv followed days later, we managed to secure a narrow victory by the scoreline of 3–2. Excellent result, Pavlov got his third and fourth goals in three matches. Then came Real Madrid, who beat us 3–1 at the Bernabéu but the match was even and at 1–0 until 75mins when their quality shone.

A 0–0 with Olexandriуa finished these two months, that was our second meeting in just over a week as that other one, the defeat, was rescheduled from August. That was a welcomed point versus a title rival. In the Premier League table, we currently sit 1st and lead Vorskla (2nd) by three points and Olexandriуa (3rd) by five. Big work ahead if we want to remain in the Ukrainian Cup, while things are looking good in the Champions League (3rd) thanks to that win in Lisbon. Real Madrid at home next, but then the massive matches with Anderlecht and Sporting arrive. I'd take UEFA Europa League football wholeheartedly, it would be a massive step forward for club.

2051 - June to August:
2051–52 gets started, which is what I plan to be my final season with Shakhtar Donetsk before moving on. Three of the four competitions have begun, while our UEFA Champions League group gets drawn.

Our pre-season campaign consisted of friendly wins over Sumy, Kuban, Tytan Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb, Ufa and Leicester City; the first two were testimonials. It was a unique pre-season schedule as we didn't have to pre-qualify for the UEFA Champions League, a welcomed first under my reign as manager with Shakhtar. The final two friendlies, Ufa and Leicester, came after the 2051 Super Cup final where we would face Desna, just like last season. Yet again wanting revenge for them beating us to the Ukrainian Cup in the previous season's final.

On 18 July 2051, we faced Desna and beat them 2–0 in Kharkiv. Brazilian duo Júnior and Paulinho with the winning strikes; we have no problem beating them in league and Super Cup but when it comes to cup finals, no chance it seems. Anyway, that's my sixth honour with the club - always nice to add to the career cabinet. On the weekend of the Leicester friendly, we were scheduled to face Olexandriуa in our league opener but that was postponed due to their UEFA Europa League qualifying run - it has yet to be played, two more postponements since. As such, us two are a game behind the rest of the Premier League.

Our PL season finally got underway on 5 August with a meeting with last season's runners-up, Vorskla. It was a tight affair, which ended drawn with a goal apiece. Another draw followed on Matchday 2 v. Chornomorets Odesa, this time goalless. Not the best start but unbeaten at least. Our first league win was claimed on 16 August v. Sudnobudivnyk Mykolaiv, goals coming from forwards Alexey Pavlov and Andrey Konovalov. Another two goals came next time out as we beat Volyn 2–0 at the Donbass Arena - Marcos Vinicius and Jonas Marchand netting there. Three wins from three came as we then beat second tier Kremin in the Ukrainian Cup 0–5; new signing Luis Arias opened the haul.

That rounds up the start to 2051–52. September and October proves to be very busy with twelve competitive fixtures scheduled, which includes the beginning of our Champions League campaign; we've been grouped with Anderlecht, Real Madrid and Sporting CP. Real will likely run away with things, but we should be challenging Anderlecht and Sporting for 2nd/3rd - we haven't covered ourselves in glory in Europe under me yet though, so it could go any way. Board expectations, Super Cup triumph and squad statistics are below.

In the transfer market, we signed four and let go eleven.

INS:
Sérgio Valente (Free, GK, Manchester City)
Jaílson (£750k, CAM, Braga)
Bas Nijkamp (£2.9m, LB, Groningen)
Luis Arias (£8.75m, FW, Galatasaray)

Valente and Jaílson are loans made permanent, both done well last season and were both available so I decided to pounce. Nijkamp is a Dutch left-back, signed to hopefully fix our problem in that area; last year's signing of Matija Gomelt hasn't quite worked out. Nijkamp has been steady so far, hopefully he keeps it up. Arias has just signed as mentioned, should be first-choice; signed as I wanted another striker, but also due to Júnior getting injured for a few weeks/months.

OUTS (notable):
Óscar Santos (-, LW, Retired)
Vitaliy Pervak (Free, RB, Stade de Reims)
Vadim Mishin (Free, LW, AC Milan)
Volodymyr Zozulya (£8.5m, CM, Köln)
Erivaldo (Loan, FW, Hapoel Tel-Aviv)
Hiroshi Katô (Loan, GK, Fulham)
Ramon van Dijk (Loan, LW, Brøndby)

Santos was first-team and had spent his whole career with Shakhtar, big loss. Pervak and Mishin rejected new contracts and got future moves mid-season, subsequently spent their remaining days in the reserves - as previously stated. Zozulya was a funny one. Top player but disposable. Köln offered something like £11.75m which the board accepted themselves, I decided to oppose it as, despite him being replaceable, I wanted to keep him. The board agreed with me, cancelled the deal but then Zozulya came moaning to force a move which he got - so actually went for £8.5m. Football Manager, everybody! Erivaldo, Katô and van Dijk, trio of squad depth, angled for loans and got them.

2051 - April and May:
The final two months of the season with Shakhtar Donetsk. For the first real time in my tenure, we went into it with a true right for the Premier League. If we wanted to make it eleven in a row for the club, and three in a row under my management then we would have to fend off Olexandriуa and perhaps even Karpaty. The Ukrainian Cup also reached its critical point, we faced a semi-final with the aforementioned Olexandriуa.

Olexandriуa were our first opponents of these two months, the first of four meetings with our closest challengers. After a run of five straights wins to start the new year, we headed into the match on top confidence while Olexandriуa were going through a rough patch of form. Despite that, they were the ones who turned up on the day to claim a big three points (1–0). That relinquished our three point lead, meaning we where back level at the summit. It was to be back-to-back defeats as we suffered a shock loss at home to Sudnobudivnyk Mykolaiv, they raced into a 0–3 lead prior to us saving face by making it 2–3. We then got lucky, as Olexandriуa also lost; to Volyn.

We responded to those defeats by getting two consecutive wins over title outsiders Karpaty and bottom of the split side Volyn. Karpaty was away, goals came from Henning Huseklepp and Volodymyr Zozulya. Volyn were dismantled 5–0 at the Donbass Arena, Zozulya and Júnior notched braces after Paulinho's first-minute opener. Olexandriуa drew and won at these moments. We then faced them in the first leg of the Ukrainian Cup semi-final, it ended goalless as did the other semi-final between Desna and Vorskla. All to play for in the seconds legs which arrived three weeks after. Both us and Vorskla then drew 0–0 again as we faced each other in Poltava on 22 April.

Olexandriуa could've took advantage of that result, but thankfully they lost to Karpaty. At the midway stage of the split, I can't remember exactly but I think we were top by two points with Vorskla overtaking Olexandriуa. The third of four meets with Olexandriуa came a week after that Vorskla tie, we won this one 1–0 to secure a massive result thanks to a early second half Júnior goal. That killed Olexandriуa who then went and lost four of their next five in all competitions, meaning Vorskla had very much taken their place in the fight for the title with us. Sadly, we couldn't take advantage of Olexandriуa's bad form as we then drew with Sudnobudivnyk 1–1; Paulinho did score a big late leveller though.

The second leg with Olexandriуa in the cup then followed, it was a tense encounter. Júnior put us ahead prior to our visitors equalising to claim an away-goal, it remained that way until the middle of the second half when we turned it around to go through 3–1 on aggregate after strikes from Paulinho and Alexey Pavlov. We advanced to the Ukrainian Cup final for the second year running, and just like last year we'd face Desna in the finale - yes, Desna, who beat us in it last year. Surely not again? Before the season's showpiece, we had the chance to win the Premier League title if we beat Karpaty and our challengers lost.

Sadly, we didn't even do our job as we lost to Karpaty. Thankfully, Vorskla drew while Olexandriуa lost. So, heading into the final two matchdays we were three points clear with six to play for. Olexandriуa were four points behind while Vorskla were the three, and we faced Vorskla next in the league - which meant a win would secure the third straight league title for me at Shakhtar Donetsk. However, all that was put firmly in the back of our minds as we met Desna in the Ukrainian Cup final for the second year running, hoping to extract revenge for them beating us to the crown in 2050.

Lightning does strike twice, it seems. Desna have again beat us in the Ukrainian Cup final. Last season it was in normal time, this season on penalties. In both season's they've been an average bottom split team, yet have won back-to-back major trophies for the first-time ever. Extremely frustrating, but helped by the fact it went to a penalty shoot-out - the AI pretty much always wins penalty shoot-outs so I was expecting it so that took some of the blow. We aimed for redemption by aiming to win the Premier League with a win over Vorskla a week later.

We did that, but only just! Paulinho scored a 20th-minute goal which we held on to which made us Premier League champions! The club's eleventh in a row, their thirty-third overall. My third with the club. Annoyed about the cup, delighted with the league - just like last campaign. Déjà vu. We finished the competitive season by drawing with Volyn (1–1). Four points was the points gap between us and second. All the usual stuff is below. Toughest season so far in Ukraine, only just got the title. Super Cup to go with it. Next season will likely be my last in the country, one that will include a start in the UEFA Champions League from the group stage for the first time.

2051 - January to March:
I head into 2051 with Shakhtar Donetsk trying to improve our pretty poor form from the end of last year which left us 2nd in the Premier League, four points off leaders Olexandriуa.

The mid-season break saw us take trips to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and India to face Al Ain, El Jaish and Bengaluru respectively. Wins came in all three, which included goals from new signings Mark Dimond and Richard van der Meulen. Upon arriving back in Ukraine, we had a tricky match to restart the Premier League campaign - Karpaty at home. It was an absolutely mental game of football.

It ended in a 3–2 win for us, but that's just half the story. Karpaty actually took a two-goal lead before 40mins, but we managed to scrap it back to 2–2 in the first half's final five minutes. Then, in the second half's first five minutes we were awarded not one, but two penalties - missed them both! Things got worse on 61mins as Maxim Djioev got sent off. I was pretty peeved at this moment, I went fairly defensive in hope of securing the draw. However, the drama wasn't over as Paulinho, a new signing, scored the winning goal on his debut on 72mins. Ridiculous match, proper ridiculous. Happy to come out of it with the points though!

Alexey Pavlov scored in that Karpaty match, as he did four days later in the second leg of the Ukrainian Cup QF with Sudnobudivnyk Mykolaiv. We won 2–1 there to win 6–2 on aggregate, we'll face league title rivals Olexandriуa in the semi-finals. Then came three straight Premier League encounters, we had to keep winning to put the pressure on Olexandriуa. On 4 March, we faced Vorskla on the road away from home. Júnior and Dimond scored to win it for us. Júnior again popped up with a goal a match later versus Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, with it this time being a crucial, crucial goal which won us the three points.

Over those three league matchdays, Olexandriуa failed to win as they drew with Desna and Dynamo Kyiv, while losing to Karpaty. This meant we sat top of the table by three points. We then beat Sudnobudivnyk 4–0 in March's final league match which almost put the gap to six points, but Olexandriуa returned to winning ways with a victory over last place Kremin. So, heading into the ten-match split we are top of the Premier League table by three points. However, we play Olexandriуa twice more as well as the two cup meetings. They'll make or break our season. The final game of these two months was a testimonial for Vitaliy Pervak vs. Chornomorets Odesa.

The second leg in the cup with Sudnobudivnyk was my 100th game in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk! Also, after the final mid-season break friendly with Bengaluru, I was offered the Nigeria national team job; as I was before joining Shakhtar. I rejected it again, not interested in international management at the moment. Lastly, right before I was going to type this post up, the board offered me a new contract which I accepted; until June 2054, probably won't be staying that long but good to have the option if I want it. All that, plus squad statistics, are below.

In the transfer window, I signed four new players while letting go just two.

INS:
Mark Dimond (Loan, CAM, Hoffenheim)
Richard van der Meulen (Loan, LW, Ajax)
Sérgio Valente (Loan, GK, Manchester City)
Paulinho (Free, RW, Cruzeiro)

We had a good amount of money to spend, but there weren't any clear targets I wanted so went in search of the loans in the loan market. Happy with what I got. Dimond is a Wales international, gives us depth in the CAM position; was signed for back-up to Marcos Vinicius, but has become number one. van der Meulen is back-up to Óscar Santos, not really had a chance yet but looks good. Valente is our new no. 1 goalkeeper, has be excellent so far; much better than Edmundo Teixeira and Hiroshi Katô. Paulinho was a late signing, gave him a trial for the Bengaluru match and he performed well. Key winger Jordan Garcia got a long-term injury, so I signed him and he's got chances immediately; not let me down. Only found him in the free agents pool, glad I checked!

OUTS:
Daisuke Yoshida (Loan, CAM, ADO Den Haag)
Taras Antonov (£1.3m, CB, Cluj)

Yoshida barely featured this campaign, due to him moaning for a transfer out all season despite no-one wanting him permanently - eventually let him go on loan. Antonov was out on loan all season in Saudi Arabia with Al-Faisaly, returned unwanted so sold him for a good price to Cluj in Romania. Two others have secured moves for next season, Vadim Mishin and Vitaliy Pervak have signed pre-contracts with AC Milan and Stade de Reims; both been demoted to the Under-21s as a result.

Another clear defeat to Tottenham Hotspur arrived on 2 November in the Champions League, Ayo Ekpeyong scored but we lost 1–3. That pretty much killed our qualification hopes, meaning we were left to fight for 3rd (UEFA Europa League), with a huge encounter with Torino (4th) coming up a few weeks later. Talking of big matches, we faced league leaders Olexandriуa days after the Tottenham game, where a win would've taken us back top. That wasn't the case though as Olexandriуa beat us at our home stadium. Terrible performance, they went five points clear in 1st. Marítimo B gave us a friendly during the November internationals, Júnior scored a hat-trick in a four-goal victory.

A run of three straight games without a competitive win was brought to an end on 18 November as we beat Zorya Luhansk 2–1 at the Donbass Arena, it was another terrible performance but Richárd Fekecs scored twice, prior to getting sent off, to give us an important three points. Then came the decisive Champions League match with Torino. A win would've secured a UEL spot due to head-to-head, while a draw probably would've been enough due to Matchday 6 fixtures for each of us. So, you can obviously guess what happened. We lost, duh! Júnior put us ahead but the Italians fought back to win and secure Europa League football for 2051. Frustrating.

Back-to-back wins would follow in league and cup. Desna were dispatched 1–3 in the league via goals from Marcos Vinicius, Patricio Portilla (o.g.) and Alexey Pavlov, we went one better and won 1–4 in the cup quarter-final first leg over Sudnobudivnyk Mykolaiv where Jordan Garcia played superbly whilst scoring twice. It should've been three straight wins, but we very predictably dropped points to bottom of the table Kremin; who had only five points. 0–0, at least the fourth time we've dropped points to the bottom team during my one-year tenure. Another predictable result followed, this one rightly so as it was to deserved group winners Benfica in the UCL (4–1).

Our final match of 2050 was against rivals Dynamo Kyiv, who find themselves fighting relegation. We only just beat them 2–1, Garcia and Fekecs scoring. Four matches from the split, we are four points behind Olexandriуa; who did drop one point since our loss to them but are still in command. We really need to fix ourselves in the new year, nowhere near good enough at the moment. Elsewhere: Out of Europe, still in the Ukrainian Cup and already won the Super Cup back in July. We kicked off the two months in style with a 5–0 home win over newly-promoted Kremin, two own-goals falling before and after three goals from three separate defenders in Maxim Djioev (free-kick!), Vitaliy Pervak (penalty!) and Vadym Berezovskyi. All the attacking talent we have and we needed two OGs and three defenders to score. Next came the start of our UEFA Champions League group phase, as mentioned we were drawn into Group F with Benfica, Torino and Tottenham Hotspur. Tricky opponents, but we were looking to improve on last season's six/six defeats. Torino were up on Matchday 1, we secured an excellent point in Turin thanks to a Jonas Marchand free-kick.

Three days later we suffered our second defeat in the Premier League as Karpaty dominated us from start to end to win 2–0. The third round of the Ukrainian Cup saw us face Metalurg Zaporizhia over two legs, happy with the draw but they're one of the best second tier clubs as they were relegated from the top-flight last season. Metalurg hosted the first leg, we played a full strength line-up but only won by one singular goal via Jordan Garcia. Fortunate victory. They were one of two who went down last campaign, while Sudnobudivnyk Mykolaiv were one who came up. We faced Sudnobudivnyk on 24 September and won 0–2.

Matchday 2 in Europe saw us meet Benfica at the Donbass Arena. They had smashed Tottenham 4–0 on MD1 so I was not feeling confident ahead of this encounter, however we went onto secure a vital point with a 1–1. Safe to say Benfica left their scoring boots in Lisbon as, despite dominating, they could only score once and even allowed us a goal; Garcia scored our goal. Two games down in the UCL, two draws. Very good start, it actually put us 2nd heading into Matchday 3 due to other results going our way. That 1–1 scoreline was repeated in the league next time out as we dropped points at home to Vorskla on 1 October. On 8 October, we lost to Eskişehirspor in a friendly.

A return to winning ways arrived after the October international break, we visited the Dnipro-Arena to play Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. We returned home with three points and a nil-three win, off-season signing Jaílson notched his first goal for the club in the process. On 18 October, Tottenham Hotspur were our MD3 opponents in the UCL. For the first time this season we got smashed, Tottenham won 4–1 at New White Hart Lane. Could've/should've won by more in truth, all four of their goals were outstanding. We then handed out two batterings of our own against Volyn (PL) and Metalurg (UC), scoring four goals without conceding on both occasions.

Versus Volyn, Júnior opened the scoring before Garcia, Heleno Santos and Alexey Pavlov netted later on. Versus Metalurg, Vadim Mishin scored first prior to Pavlov getting another two while Ayo Ekpeyong also got one. Excellent reply to that Spurs loss, but we then lost 4–1 away again after Chornomorets Odesa, out of nowhere, smacked us in October 2050's final match. Valentyn Chesnakov got sent off at 1–0, but that's no excuse for conceding four goals to a team that was sitting second bottom. Hideous collapse. That defeat actually knocked us off top spot in the table, Olexandriуa have overtaken us and lead by two points. Not good! Going well in Europe (3rd) and cup (QFs) though.

2050 - June to August:
2050–51 has begun! It will likely, if all goes right, be my penultimate season with Shakhtar Donetsk. I'm loving it at the club, but it was always going to be a short stop off in Ukraine. Back in the now, all four competitions all got underway in these two months after a testing pre-season.

Two testimonials kicked off the season as we celebrated long-serving defenders Eugene Radionov and Maxim Djioev, I set up the friendlies against their former clubs. Radionov's was against Olimpik Donetsk, while Djioev's was versus ACS Poli Timișoara. Well, that was what was supposed to happen but Radionov didn't actually featured in his testimonial - due to an international call-up... We lost it to boot. Djioev's ended in victory. Three other friendlies followed vs. Sumy, Nantes and Nancy-Lorraine, we won the first two but lost to Nancy on penalties.

Like last season, Shakhtar entered at the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. That, however, will change next season as Ukraine have improved in the coefficients and therefore the league champions will secure a group stage berth. Great news, even if these early qualifying rounds are quite fun to play with a big club. In the 2QR, UEFA drew us against Lithuanian club Trakai. It was a walk in the park as we advanced 11–0 on aggregate, winning the first leg 0–5 in Vilnius while beating them at the Donbass Arena 6–0. Júnior and Jordan Garcia got braces in leg one, while Alexey Pavlov stole the headlines in leg two with a stunning thirty-five minute hat-trick. Into the 3QR!

In-between the demolition of Trakai, we had a chance to extract revenge on our Ukrainian Cup final nemesis Desna. They beat us in last season's cup final to earn their first major trophy, so we met in this season's Super Cup. Revenge was sweet as we won 3–0 with ease, new signing Heleno Santos scored his first goal for the club for the second goal. Trophy number four with Shakhtar Donetsk! In the next round of Champions League qualifying, we surprisingly got paired with Shirak of Armenia. Surprising due to the fact they shocked all to knock out APOEL in the previous round! The first leg came on 27 July in Yerevan, we returned home with a 1–3 win; H. Santos scored twice.

Before the second leg, we opened our Premier League defence with a trip to face Olexandriуa. It took until the middle of September last season to lose for the first time, but this season we tasted defeat in game one as Sergiy Sulymenko's boys turned us over despite us taking an early lead through Júnior. Disappointing start but it did, as you'll see, seem to kick us into gear. A second meet with Shirak came days after the Olexandriуa match, we dominated the Armenians on home turf to win by five goals to zero. Pavlov didn't score a hat-trick this time, but Vadim Mishin did; equally fast, after just twenty-seven minutes. Through to the play-offs where Partizan (SRB) awaited.

Three consecutive PL matches then followed versus Chornomorets Odesa, Zorya Luhansk and Dynamo Kyiv. The scoreline over Chornomorets and Zorya was both three to one, Júnior notching two to Chornomorets while the goals were shared between Yuriy Savanchuk, Ayo Ekpeyong and Pavlov versus Zorya. H. Santos got the sole goal to beat Dynamo. Excellent response to losing on Matchday 1! The goals and form continued into the first leg with Partizan in Europe as we secured a dominant 0–4 win at the Partizan Stadium in Belgrade, centre-back Henning Huseklepp got us off to the best possible start on 8mins while Júnior wrapped it up on 71mins; H. Santos and Mishin scored in the meantime.

The Ukrainian Cup got underway on 20 August, we had a tie with second tier Inhulets. A rotated line-up played, but nevertheless the recent third tier outfit gave us our toughest match of the season so far despite losing to us 0–1. They were impressive, could've won it on any other day but thankfully we sneaked through into round three. That made it six wins in a row in all competitions, it turned into seven straight victories as we further dispatched Partizan 2–1 in the return UCL leg, Huseklepp and H. Santos scored as they did in the first leg. Into the Champions League group stage. Let's hope we better last season's torrid run of six out of six losses.

Two Premier League games ended August 2050. Desna and Volyn were the opponents, both at home; both defeated 2–0. H. Santos scored his seventh and eighth goals for the club against Desna. He is looking an excellent signing! His strike partner Júnior is also in great form, he scored two himself vs. Volyn to make it nine goals in the fourteen matches; injuries are usually his weakness though so I hope he stays fit as him and H. Santos are striking a very good partnership. So, despite a rocky start we do sit top of the league table after six matches; two points clear. Won the Super Cup, still in the Ukrainian Cup. Got Tottenham Hotspur, Benfica and Torino in our UCL group. Ouch!

Three new faces came in during the transfer window, while nine left the club.

INS:
Heleno Santos (£2m, FW, Vitória Bahia)
Matthias Pfeifer (£1.9m, RB, Rapid Vienna)
Jaílson (Loan, CAM, Braga)

H. Santos joins from Vitória Bahia of Brazil, but became known to me after a successful loan spell with our rivals Dynamo Kyiv last season with 15 goals in 37 games; their top goalscorer. I had to take him off them, one for the fans to cherish due to us gutting a rival of their talent. That also brings a risk due to the rivalry, but that has disappeared now after his outstanding start to life in Donetsk. Pfeifer (24) comes in to replace ageing right-back Vitaliy Pervak (31). Pervak has been terrific for me, but Pfeifer looks the perfect replacement and has began nicely. Jaílson is in for squad depth, very versatile but primarily a CAM.

OUTS:
Josef Ljungberg (Retired, GK, -)
José Eduardo Oliveira (Free, FW, Al-Duhail)
Ales Soukup (£15.5m, CM, Hoffenheim)
Sergey Tkachev (Loan, GK, Tytan Donetsk)
Aslan Korotkov (Loan, GK, Volyn)
Ramon van Dijk (Loan, LW, Twente)
Arthur Smits (Loan, CAM, NEC)
Vyacheslav Sokolov (Loan, CM, Inhulets)
Gordan Cvitanovic (Loan, CM, Guntamatic Ried)

The big outgoings were Oliveira and Soukup. Oliveira left to join Qatari team Al-Duhail (formerly known as Lekhwiya), the man with 130 goals in 9 years with Shakhtar decided to leave on a bosman; long time in coming, was rejecting contract offers from a year previous. Soukup, easily our best midfielder during my tenure, had also been itching to leave and has joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim for a healthy fee. Top pick-up by Hoffenheim, the likes of Bayern Munich were interested at one point. Ljungberg was first-choice 'keeper, chose to retire. All others out were squad depth or youth. Oliveira, Soukup and Ljungberg were big outs but I feel it has worked out nicely, not missed 'em at all.

Dynamo Kyiv (2nd) were our first opponents of the split, we came into it ten points clear of them and could've went thirteen points ahead but instead kept it at ten after a 1–1 tie. A convincing 0–4 away win to Karpaty followed a week later, José Eduardo Oliveira nabbed a brace. Vorskla were up next in the midweek, we beat them 2–1 at the Donbass Arena thanks to a Volodymyr Zozulya winner. Then came a double header with Volyn, one in the Premier League and one in the cup. Oliveira scored in both fixtures, but the first came in a 2–1 loss; only our second defeat of the season. The other won us the semi-final first leg in the Ukrainian Cup, Marcos Vinicius also scoring for a 2–1 win.

To put it simply, we then hit a brick wall in the final two months of the season. Just one win would come in the last eight matches. Dynamo Kyiv and Olexandriуa both beat us on 23 and 30 April, Olexandriуa shockingly putting five past us to win 5–2 while Dynamo won 2–0. Disgusting performances from the players, two of the worst performances I have ever seen on Football Manager; especially that 5–2 defeat, it was as if all our players were drained of all footballing ability. Gotta credit Olexandriуa certainly, but damn we were woeful. Things improved ever so slightly as we went two unbeaten across two competitions, however both were 0–0 draws.

The first 0–0 was vs. Karpaty in the league, meaning we went four league games without victory. Despite this, thanks to our original ten point gap along with the other top six beating each other, we could still win the title with victory over Vorskla seven days later. Before that, we had the second goalless match which came in the second leg of the Ukrainian Cup semi-final. Another bad, bad performance, but it was enough to send us through to the 2050 final 1–2 on aggregate. Bottom split team Desna beat top four Olexandriуa 2–4 in the other match, so we would face them in May's showpiece. With a final berth secured, we aimed to clinch the title versus Vorskla.

Somewhat remarkably, we didn't bottle it and beat Vorskla to win the club their tenth Premier League title in a row. Champions! All thanks to a late winner from Vinicius on 91mins, nothing better than a late clincher! Two games to spare, the title was done and dusted; it should've been so a few games previous but at least we got it done. We had the chance to win two trophies in a week as the Ukrainian Cup final followed a week later. Sadly, there was no double celebration as Desna surprised all to win their first-ever major trophy. Overall a shock, but given our form I wasn't sat there in too much surprise; kinda expected it. Congratulations to Desna.

At this point, I was actually pissed with the squad so dropped them all for the penultimate matchday against Olexandriуa. Squad players and some youth got their chance, we got beat 1–4. If I'm honest, I'm not even sure the first eleven would've improved on that result as is my lack of confidence with them at the moment. On the last day we played Volyn, I recalled a few of the first-team but a load of them were actually on international duty so the line-up wasn't too different than vs. Olexandriуa. It ended 1–1. That's my first full season with Shakhtar Donetsk over, another title and a Super Cup in the bag but no cup. Out of Europe at groups, but that was the expectation so board are happy.

Note: On the first time around, my computer decided to restart itself after the Volyn defeat on 16 April. I hadn't saved it since 1 April (four games previous, date when I done previous post here - I usually have the fortnight save roll thing on, but apparently didn't re turn it on after turning it off during the job search before Shakhtar. Therefore had to painstakingly replay those matches to get the same results to be fair to myself and the save. Getting the same results for Shakhtar was hard enough, but needed Dynamo to do so also so the points difference was similar etc. I got it done eventually, all results the same. Very annoying though. Having to do that while enduring the terrible form killed my motivation a little. Back on it now!

Thanks for reading!

2050 - January to March:
2050 is here. My manager has reached the age of 54, having started in 2016 at age 20. Thirty-four years after starting the career with Albirex Niigata (S) in Singapore with no experience or badges, I find myself leading Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Premier League. In this post, we take a trip to Brazil during the mid-season break as well as continuing our Premier League and Ukrainian Cup runs.

Four friendlies were scheduled in Brazil, Atlético Mineiro kicked it off before matches against Corinthians, Flamengo and Palmeiras. We won all but one, losing to fifteen time champions Corinthians - but wins came vs. Mineiro, Flamengo and Palmeiras, Júnior scoring the winner against the latter back in his homeland. Competitive football returned with a league match with relegation-threatened Tytan Donetsk, we edged them out in a seven-goal thriller. It ended 3–4, we actually led 0–3 and 1–4 but Tytan made a game of it late on, in fairness to them; José Eduardo Oliveira scored a brace.

We then overturned our Ukrainian Cup QF first leg defeat to Vorskla by winning the second leg 3–1 on home turf, Ales Soukup scored early to go with Oliveira and Óscar Santos goals to send us to achieve a semi-final berth; 2046–47 was the last time Shakhtar reached the semi-finals! Volyn await. That gave us the confidence to go into our final three pre-split Premier League fixtures and win all three. Zorya Luhansk were defeated 5–0 at the Donbass Arena as Oliveira again scored two, January new signing Ayo Ekpeyong scored his first for the club to make it five.

Four more goals followed in a win over Metalurg Zaporizhia, Marcos Vinicius, who got two, scored his opener inside the first minute to put us on our way; Santos and Oliveira also got on the scoresheet. We made it twelve goals in three fixtures as we beat Olexandriуa 0–3 away from home, an own-goal was sandwiched in-between Oliveira and Volodymyr Zozulya strikes. After a goalscoring pattern of five, four and then three, we rounded that off by winning by two in a friendly with Alashkert of Armenia. That's the regular league season over, we head into the ten match split top by ten points. Title should be secured. Thankfully, despite a scare, we remain in the Ukrainian Cup. Hopefully we can go all the way.

Award/squad stats below. As is my board confidence, which is at 'Very Secure'.

As for transfers, it was unexpectedly busy. Four in, four out.

INS:
Khazu Silva Aveiro (Loan, FW, Fluminense)
Matija Gomelt (£4.3m, LB, Dinamo Zagreb)
Ayo Ekpeyong (Loan, FW, Villarreal)
Jonas Marchand (£5.5m, CM, Queens Park Rangers)

Aveiro and Ekpeyong were signed for depth in the striking department. Ekpeyong is first-team quality but as we only play one up top, Oliveira is undroppable; despite him being unhappy at the club, contract ends in June so will be departing as it stands. Gomelt was signed as a replacement for key left-back Joey Barnett, who kicked up a fuss to join Arsenal of England for £14.5m. Big loss, but Gomelt has impressed since joining. The last signing was unplanned. Marchand became available at QPR for just £5.5m, way below his value. I didn't think we had a chance as Italy's Juventus were already in deep talks, but we managed to prise him away from Turin to come to Donetsk. Key signing.

OUTS:
Taras Antonov (Loan, CB, Al-Faisaly)
Vyacheslav Semin (Loan, CB, Al-Batin)
Joey Barnett (£14.5m, LB, Arsenal)
Erivaldo (Loan, FW, Werder Bremen)

Antonov and Semin wanted loan moves, got them to Saudi Arabia. As did young Brazilian striker Erivaldo, who has moved to Germany. Barnett wanted to leave as mentioned, got a great fee for him.
