March 2019 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

The 2018-19 season continues into March 2019. Our predicament heading into the year's third month was positive, we sat 2nd in the Premier Soccer League and had already qualified for the knockout rounds of the CAF Champions League with two games to spare; we're also still in the FA Cup. A few friendlies were also scheduled due to an end of month free period, including a testimonial for Happy Jele.

Up and down month. Extremely disappointing opening two fixtures, both coming in the PSL against Bidvest Wits and Chippa United. We lost to title rivals Wits before drawing with bottom half side Chippa Utd, very poor results; ground lost in our quest for the league trophy. In other competitions, we've had more happier results. Petro de Luanda were defeated in the Champions League, prior to putting six past lower league Super Eagles in the FA Cup to advance to the quarter-finals; where we'll face Baroka. Unfortunately we didn't managed to win 100% of our Champions League group games, as we dropped points at home to bottom club Saoura. Standard. Progression is all that counts though, Zamalek (Egypt) await us. Lastly, both friendlies were won - including Jele's testimonial. In the PSL, we're 4pts off top with a game in hand.

I don't really consider performances in pre season as a measure really mate, as long as you play well in the regular season you're in with a shout of staying up.

For sure. Our opening fixtures are fairly kind, against a few teams that many would expect to be around us at the bottom.

Pre-Season 2019 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/6gtAWJlbVFayWViBGwTvTJbAStNJbCDl6gUOByl4.png

New job. El Tanque Sisley have given me another crack at Uruguayan second tier football, as I was hoping for better than what happened with Sud América. This time I have a full pre-season to put my stamp on this team.
https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UKT7vT1zYbxXbHJ7ZDeP46Z4szpbQ3dyZNkVG0Xi.png

Game 1: El Tanque Sisley (URU) vs. Almirante Brown (ARG) (Friendly)

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/68YmBmYfwUryZRo48NtwyZTAvzlMpklsQ0JYFtdV.png

Thoughts: Tricky first test against a decent Argentine outfit, who deserved to win despite the scoreline flattering them a little bit.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/sHba5WbNR1u6CMXqwJeO1f4n24WPvkBV7KDBMgQi.png

Thoughts: This is a match we should've won, instead we let a lower division club take the victory; though we were the better team.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UKT7vT1zYbxXbHJ7ZDeP46Z4szpbQ3dyZNkVG0Xi.png

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/AOTZieopxdoJcIIfL3lHPel0S32Eli18vYe6gPwi.png

Thoughts: Another opponent from Argentina, who also beat us after a quickfire double in the second half. Harsh defeat.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/arjOGUaZjScjdNWjDGayDrfy455g9AZQ8hOAoZy0.png

Thoughts: A late collapse costs us a friendly win, just like against UAI Urquiza. Frustrating.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/FZtuGfbhK1jCgozilc4xaSwlsYpAei1GmgaqABBs.png

Thoughts: Victory, at last. Ironically, we were the ones who scored late goals to get the bragging rights.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UKT7vT1zYbxXbHJ7ZDeP46Z4szpbQ3dyZNkVG0Xi.png
Recap: Not the most promising pre-season, but I'd say performances were a tad better than the results suggest. I was also tinkering every game with tactics, as this team wasn't really set for any immediate tactic so had to test a few things out. I've stuck with a defensive tactic, seemed to help in the final few friendlies but the acid test will come in our opening league fixture against Miramar Misiones.

Us and Miramar Misiones are two of the fourteen teams taking part in the Segunda División for 2019, very interesting to see four-time Primera División champion Danubio as a competitor this year after they were relegated from the top-flight in 2018. It's hard to predict what will happen, I'm expecting a relegation battle all season long but we will see.

Off the pitch, I've made a number of signings. I also planned another, which would've seen me reunite with one Diego Forlán. However, despite agreeing everything on the morning (around 8am, acc. to game) of deadline day, the deal somehow didn't manage to go through by midnight. Ridiculous. I've managed to sign him on a pre-contract, but he now wont join until July - missing over half the season. I bet he'll get injured at some point when joining too!

Yet again, a fantastic month for us! Six encounters, six victories! The first allowed us to make it three wins from three in Group A in the CAF Champions League, defeating Algerian team Saoura by a single goal in Béchar; which took us to within one point from advancing from the group. An expected 5-1 friendly win followed, prior to a key Champions League match - Al-Hilal away. Three points were secured in some style, we went four goals ahead which guareenteed the points and subsequent advancement from Group A - conceding two late goals didn't dampen our spirits, delighted to get through to the quarter-finals! Tougher ties await. A week after our continental high, we returned to league action for the first time since December 2018. In our absence, a few of our rivals had played a league match which means we were/still are a game behind everyone else so dropped off top spot.

However, our fine form continued as we beat Free State Stars on the road after goals from Paseka Mako and Innocent Maela - a very strong performance. That cannot be said about our next match though, as we narrowly scraped past Maritzburg United in the FA Cup. Admittedly I did rotate my entire team, starting with players who had barely featured this season alongside one or two youngsters. Even so, the performance was very poor and Maritzburg deserved wholeheartedly to progress, but thankfully we got the luck and went through on penalties. Days later, we actually faced Maritzburg Utd again - in the Premier Soccer League. This time, it was roles reversed as our returning stars dominated the fixture and secured a strong 2-0 win; despite leaving it somewhat late.

Things are looking bright. As I said, we have been knocked off the top in the PSL but through no fault of our own - current leaders Cape Town City have played a game more. Champions League and FA Cup progression secured, we've been drawn with (in-game) non-league side Super Eagles in the latter, which gives us a tremendous chance of advancing. We remain in three competitions, as we aim to add to our trophy collection having already won the Top 8 Cup earlier this season.

I am the new manager of El Tanque Sisley! I have returned to the Uruguayan Segunda División. I hadn't planned to, but after struggling to get any real interest from elsewhere and actually thinking it through, I was interested in going back.

El Tanque Sisley are a really interesting club to take over. They are newly promoted* from the Segunda División Amateur (tier three), but were in the Primera División as recently as 2017. How? you may ask. Well, in 2017 (in real life) they finished off fourth bottom, level on points with, of all teams, Sud América so went into a relegation play-off to see who would be relegated. El Tanque Sisley won and survived the drop, but at the beginning of 2018 (again, real life), they were demoted to the second division for 2019 due to outstanding debt. I assume that's what FM has done, though their reputation is the same as Rocha (newly promoted) *so FM may see them as a promoted team rather than a relegated one.

As I mentioned, I kinda wanted to avoid this league due to the average points table, but after thinking it through I decided to return as I'll have a full pre-season to build with; rather than joining perilously in mid-season like with my former club. So, Uruguay - take two!

With relegation, and subsequent sacking, all but confirmed, I headed into September with Sud América with just pride to play for.

Game 1: Sud América (URU) vs. Cerro Largo (URU) (Segunda División)

Thoughts: No words for this, the match recap does the job.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/UKf0tZjwq3VgahlKSEqT1aRzyJRvOZIEaNKV6CGk.png

Recap: There we go, glad to get out of there to be brutally honest.

After all that, I was sacked for failing to reach a points target - which was set by the past president, with the new president explicitly stating he was only going to judge from when the he took over (i.e. no points target) - yet, he sacked me for the points target.

Can we just take a moment to see that Cerro Largo match though, that ending was just tremendous. You'd never know I was on "very defensive" throughout the whole of that, including Cerro's third goal which can be seen below - gotta love that "very defensive" defending... as well as Cerro turning into Barcelona with the instant one-touch passing!

Oh well, that's the downside of playing with the bottom end clubs - it really shows off FM's iffy side. All part of the 'fun'.

The game, for some reason, isn't awarding the relegation to me on my manager profile, but I'll still add it here. I think as it was an average points table, the game can't work out when a team is relegated? Who knows.

Onto job number two! Thanks for reading!

January 2019 Round-up:

Upcoming Fixtures:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/1kcVVZ6aAOZqoxsp8EAijRHCdU6w9QD4sbmTinei.png

January was CAF Champions League month. Our group in Africa's main club competition was drawn on 5 January, pitting us against Al-Hilal (Sudan), Petro de Luanda (Angola) and Saoura (Algeria). We faced our opening two fixtures, facing a trip to Angola and a hosting of the Sudanese club. A friendly was also scheduled to a fill a gap.

Happy opening month of 2019. As mentioned, our Champions League run continued and we head into February with two wins out of two. Petro de Luanda were dismantled with ease on matchday one, a clinical six-goal victory was achieved. That was followed with a win over, I'd say, our biggest competitors in Group A - Al-Hilal. Xola Mlambo scored for us in a 1-0 win, but the scoreline flatters our visitors as we were dominant and didn't even allow them a shot. We're the only team in our group with back-to-backs victories. Another four goals and a third clean sheet of January followed in a home friendly win over Moretele Gunners.

The Premier Soccer League returns mid-February, no-one else has played either so we remain 1st - which is where we sit in the Champions League. Very pleased! Our FA Cup first round opponents are now known, we'll face fellow PSL side Maritzburg United; we have actually signed a player from them in the January market, which can be seen below.

One thing to share.

A: Transfers! Our one and only new signing was Siphesihle Ndlovu, who has been one of the players of the season so far with Maritzburg and is just 22 years old. Loads of players departed, eight men to be precise - all were just squad players who kicked up a fuss to leave:

Despite the rough end to last season, it was still a very promising campaign. Hopefully you can build on it!
