2045 - July and August:
Coming off a season which included Russian Cup triumph, my third campaign with Krylia Sovetov kicks off as we aim to better last season.

Somewhat of a mixed start to 2045–46. We've crashed out the UEFA Europa League, lost the Super Cup but have began the league in pretty good fashion. It all started with pre-season, we took a trip to Romania to face ASU Poli Timișoara and Târgu Mureș before facing Sokol and Everton on home soil before and after a trip to Turkey to meet Çaykur Rizespor. We won all but one friendly, losing to Poli but did beat Everton; even led 3–0 at one point. The pre-season period ended with the Russian Super Cup final versus dominant Krasnodar. It's a type of competition treated as a friendly by most, but not by me. I wanted to win this, but sadly the power of Krasnodar was too strong and, despite a good effort, we lost 1–0.

The UEFA Europa League third qualifying round came around next, we were drawn to face Allsvenskan side AIK of Sweden. We won the first leg 1–3 in Solna, prior to knocking out the fourteen-time Swedish champions a week later at the Samara Arena after winning 2–1; 5–2 on aggregate. New loan signing Maxim Kovalev stole the show in both legs, scoring four times. In between the AIK matches, we kicked off our Premier League campaign with an exquisite 4–1 home win over Ufa. Kovalev scored again to go with strikes from Joseph Davies (loan extended) and Konrad Görlitz (x2). Excellent way to start the league.

Unfortunately, we suffered defeat on Matchday 2 to Zenit. Kovalev yet again on the scoresheet, but it wasn't enough as we ran out three-one losers. Recovery was sweet though as, on 12 August 2045, we beat Dynamo Moscow after goals from Nicolás Arias and, yes you've guessed it, Kovalev. What an impact from Maxim Kovalev, the man on loan from Krasnodar. Seven goals in five appearances! Next came the final qualifying round for the Europa League, we got a tricky draw in Polish club Lech Poznań. I fancied our chances, but the draw could've been a little kinder. The first leg fell a few days after that Dynamo win, but it was an all together different match reaction as we lost 1–0. A league meeting with newly-promoted Armavir fell in the calendar next, a 1–0 win came with it via a 47th-minute Arias goal.

The second leg vs. Lech then arrived, we absolutely bossed the full ninety minutes but could only manage a 1–0 victory in ninety minutes. Therefore, extra time occurred. We again dominated but couldn't find another goal so it went to a penalty shoot-out, which in Football Manager almost means certain defeat. Sadly, it was just that predictable as Lech progressed after a PSO miss from Matej Udarevic. Bitterly frustrating. Further disappointment followed as Rostov beat us 3–2, a real bogey side of mine and Krylia; who have not beaten them in eight meetings! To make it worse, Alexandr Petrov scored a hat-trick - he's the man I sold to them whilst with Mordovia!

4th is where we sit, which isn't that bad. No draws this season yet. As mentioned, we are out of the UEFA Europa League way too soon; should've made the group stage. Sadly the Super Cup alluded us too, but at least the Russian Cup begins soon as we aim to defend our title; third tier Tyumen await in round five. You can view our board expectations below, as well as the awards/records and squad statistics.

Transfers: Five players came in, two permanently and three on loan. Mario Peretin is a centre-back from Amkar, signed for £2.5m he has become my first-choice CB. Biser Zotev followed, a back-up right-winger in from LaLiga 1|2|3's Tenerife for £1.1m. The aforementioned Maxim Kovalev was the first loan in, a striker from Krasnodar. The other two loanees are Stefan Mladenovic (LB, Birmingham City) and Fábio Fonseca (CM, Fenerbahçe). Both signed for squad depth.

Of the eleven faces out, only seven I'd call notable. Sérgio Carlos retired, first-team youngsters Dmitry Shapkin (RM) and Alexey Zaitsev (CM) left on loan to Sokol and Arsenal Tula respectively. Brazilian right-back Edinei was released, while fourth-choice striker Ruslan Nazarov joined Fakel Voronezh on loan; a move that actually made me sign Kovalev, who I planned to be fourth choice - now first! The two biggest outgoings were Luan Rama (RM) and Branislav Kovacevic (LM). Rama has joined Leicester City for £1.8m, I didn't want to sell but he wanted out. Kovacevic is a very good player, but has hardly featured and is third choice behind Anton Yatsuk and Salah Eddine Hajib. He was happy to stay, but I felt he needed first-team football - Genoa snapped him up.

2045 Russian Cup champions!

In front of a sell-out 81,000 fans at the famous Luzhniki Stadium, we became Russian Cup winners to get the club their first major trophy in their entire existence. It is also my greatest trophy of the career so far. We beat Zenit 1–2. Franko Popovic put us ahead on 39 minutes, before Anton Yatsuk set scenes to make it 0–2! Cicero Rafael got one back for Zenit on 65 minutes but we held on to claim a fantastic triumph! Buzzing! UEFA Europa League football secured and the Russian Cup won, not a bad season at all.

2045 - April and May:
We, at Krylia Sovetov, head into the final two months of this season, knowing form had to improve if we wanted to achieve our target of a top four finish.

That's more like it! After piss poor months either side of the new year, we have recovered superbly with eight wins in our last ten league fixtures. Outstanding! It flew us from 7th to 4th, which therefore secures UEFA Europa League football for next season! Pretty unexpected given our overall season form, but I'm delighted - at one point we were nine points off of 4th, so we had to keep churning out the wins and we did just that. Just one defeat in these two months. It's not just the league form either, we're into the final of the Russian Cup!

Anyway, back to the beginning. We started with a strong performance away to Ufa, but only gained a point with Russian international Albert Volkov opening the scoring for Ufa prior to Konrad Görlitz levelling three minutes from full-time. The Russian Cup semi-final with relegation-threatened Kuban followed and we made light work of the Premier League strugglers, coasting to a 3–1 victory courtesy of Görlitz (x2) and Ruslan Nazarov. Our final opponents will be the holders, Zenit. The only loss in these two months came on 9 April, we got totally outclassed by Anzhi Makhachkala in a 0–2 defeat.

We then went on a run of four straight victories. The first two were by a scoreline of nil-one and both away from the Samara Arena to Sibir and Kuban respectively. Franko Popovic got us the win vs. Sibir on 16 April, while Joseph Davies got the game's only goal vs. Kuban on 21 April. Two very unusual goalscorers! The following two wins came at home to bottom of the table Arsenal Tula, 3–1 via Luan Rama, Nicolás Arias and Anton Yatsuk, and to European challengers Amkar, via Arias. A key affair with CSKA Moscow followed, we played out a quiet goalless tie - a better result, at the time, for CSKA.

That result kept CSKA in the top four over us, so it was vital we won our final three fixtures to make sure we'd pounce if others failed. That we did, as we won our last three against Lokomotiv Moscow (1–0), Orenburg (2–0) and Rubin Kazan (1–2). Arias got the only goal in the Lokomotiv match, while Görlitz got a goal apiece vs. Orenburg and Rubin to go alongside goals from Rama and Yatsuk. Those wins guaranteed us a 4th place finish as CSKA drew on MD30, securing European qualifying for 2045–46. I'm happy with 4th, despite dodgy moments this season we've achieved our expectation. The past positions chart, below, makes for interesting reading... left it late!

The Russian Cup final was an insurance policy for a place in Europe, but now we can just enjoy the occasion and hope to add a trophy to the cabinet. That will be in the next post! Key piece of news: I have signed a new two-year contract with Krylia! My previous deal was due to end in June.

Buzzing for the Russian Cup final! If we were to win it, I'd say it would probably be the biggest trophy (in stature terms) that I would have won in the save. Fingers crossed!

2044 to 2045 - December to March:

Pressure is mounting. My board job status remains at 'stable', but the media are right on my back claiming I'm close to getting the sack. That doesn't seem the case, but we do have to improve our showings as we're down in 7th place. We're expected to be in the hunt for UEFA Europa League football, four points is the gap between us and that so we have to improve. Just four Premier League fixtures in this one due to the winter break, we've gone: W1 D2 L1. In the friendlies we went: W3 D0 L1.

Back to December 2044, we had two competitive fixtures to face prior to the off-season. A league match with league leaders and title favourites Krasnodar came first and it actually went pretty well, we got a point away from home thanks to a Yegor Yefimov goal - it was nearly a winner, but our hosts equalised in the dying embers. Our final Europa League group stage match followed, at home to Red Star Belgrade. We beat them 0–4 in the reverse encounter and eased past them once more by winning 3–1. Joseph Davies, Nicolás Arias and Bassem Abbes secured us a third place finish. Happy with that.

During the winter break, we had a trip to Switzerland to face Basel before jetting off to the Middle East for a three-game tour. We beat Basel 1–3 at St. Jakob-Park, before facing Al-Ahli in the United Arab Emirates and winning by the same scoreline. A double-header in Qatar then came versus two teams who, in real life, have merged: Jaish and Lekhwiya (now known as Al-Duhail). We beat Jaish, again 1–3, but lost on penalties to Al-Duhail. A fun set of friendly fixtures, I'd love if you could manage in the UAE or Qatar in Football Manager, interesting set of leagues.

Like last season, we had a crucial Russian Cup quarter-final to return to in the new year. We were drawn to face CSKA Moscow at the Samara Arena, and advanced to the semi-finals after winning 1–0 thanks to a stunner from substitute Ruslan Nazarov. A SF with struggling Kuban awaits, a very winnable match on paper. Back in the league, we played Fakel Voronezh two days later and came away with all three points. Konrad Görlitz scored twice before Arias scored once to give us a 0–3. Fakel produced a second half fight but could only pull it back to 2–3. Dynamo Moscow were our next opponents, another struggler but they turned us over and won 1–2. Bitterly disappointing.

A dramatic 3–3 draw with Europe-chasing Rostov followed, Görlitz grabbed another brace to go with a Alexandr Uljanov strike to get us a very valuable point. We were actually 1–3 down so did very well to salvage a draw. With our form, I didn't expect anything from that match. A friendly with our affiliate club Alania rounded off March 2045, we smashed them 1–6. 7th place we are, four points off 4th. Krasnodar are seven clear at the top, back-to-back titles on the way for them. The Russian Cup could be our best chance for European football, we should beat Kuban and would face big rivals Rubin Kazan or holders Zenit in the final should we advance.

In the transfer window, I signed three players while letting three go. Salah Eddine Hajib, a Moroccan left-winger from Raja Casablanca, joined first in a deal that was sealed out of the window. Matej Udarevic, a Croatian right-back joined from Mordovia; I managed him at Mordovia, top player. Last in was Ghanaian midfielder Samuel Sulley, a 1.5m man from Granada. Daniel Ajiboye left to join Ludogorets, he wasn't in my plans one bit. Nor was Bassem Abbes, who departed to sign for Stuttgart. LB Anatoly Oreschuk joined Randers of Denmark, he was originally first-choice for me when I signed for Krylia but had since fallen to third choice.

2044 - October and November:
The season continues with a whole host of fixtures scheduled for October and November 2044 with Krylia Sovetov.

Hideous run of results! Just three competitive wins, only two of those were a league match. We've dropped down the table and have been eliminated, as expected, out of the UEFA Europa League. October 2044 began with a trip to face Arsenal Tula, goals from Anton Yatsuk and Nicolás Arias sent us home with the points. The following league fixture was vs. struggling Kuban at home, they held us to a 1–1 draw at the Samara Arena; Konrad Görlitz scored for us. Borussia Dortmund were up next in the Europa League, the first of a double header with the German giants. At Signal Iduna Park, we produced a valiant effort but eventually were easily beat 4–1, it was actually 1–1 on 59 minutes.

We resumed Premier Division football with a battering at the hands of Amkar, writing was on the wall early as we were two down inside twenty minutes. Winless streak of three at this point, thankfully we had a favourable fixture next with Lada in the Russian Cup sixth round. We dominated the encounter with the third tier club, but only won thanks to an early Görlitz goal. Win's a win! That was our last in competitive action for six matches. We drew 0–0 with CSKA Moscow on 29 October, prior to losing 0–1 at home to Dortmund; a result that officially put us out of the Europa League. We didn't stand a chance with them and Manchester United in our group. As long as we finish 3rd and beat Red Star Belgrade for 2/2 then I'll be happy.

Back-to-back league 0–0s came next as we tied with Lokomotiv Moscow away. Our fierce rivals Rubin Kazan paid us a visit on 19 November and went away with three points, a Ruslan Nazarov goal wasn't enough as we lost 1–2. Our penultimate Group A Europa League match followed, a trip to Old Trafford to play Man. United - a dream! The result was far from one though as they easily dispatched us 3–0. A disappointing draw away to relegation-threatened Orenburg then came, Arias scored in my 900th game in management but we conceded a silly goal in the second half through Jon Vrsic. Form could be changing though as the most recent result is massive - a 2–1 home win over Zenit! Arias and Yatsuk scoring, we needed that big time! Must build on it.

So, after all of that we are 6th in the league. Two points off the top four, seven off 2nd. Krasnodar still leading the way. In the Europa League, a win on Matchday 6 at home to Red Star will secure us a 3rd place finish which is very respectable. I believe if we didn't get Dortmund and United, we would've stood a decent chance of qualifying but hey-ho. Elsewhere, we remain in the Russian Cup. A quarter-final tie with CSKA Moscow is to come in March 2045, that competition could be our best bet for European football next season given our league form.

Belgium U21s – Where Are They Now? – Ten Years Later:
Taking a look back at my time with the Belgium U21s between 2030 and 2034 as I bounced back from that terrible tenure with Dynamo Bryansk.

My Record:
EURO 2033 (Q) - 2/6 | PLD10 | W8 | D0 | L2 | GF26 | GA6 | GD+20 | PTS24
EURO 2033 | DNQ
EURO 2035 (Q) - 2/6 | PLD10 | W5 | D4 | L1 | GF26 | GA5 | GD+21 | PTS19
EURO 2035 | DNQ
Joined: October 2030 | Resigned: October 2034
Trophies: 0 (-)

I spent two qualifying campaigns with the Belgium U21s, didn't qualify for either. On the first attempt for EURO 2033, we were extremely unlucky not to qualify. We finished behind Germany in the group, before losing in a play-off to Italy. So close. The second time around we were pretty bad throughout despite having a seemingly easier group, we placed 2nd and finished behind Sweden; not getting enough points to make the play-offs. Disappointing. I subsequently resigned, the plan was always to stay for two tournament cycles.

I certainly underachieved with Belgium U21s, first time tough with Germany and then Italy but second time very bad; especially as they were reigning champions when I took over.

Their Record Since:
EURO 2037 (Q) - 4/6 | PLD10 | W4 | D1 | L5 | GF19 | GA11 | GD+8 | PTS13
EURO 2037 | DNQ
--
EURO 2039 (Q) - 1/6 | PLD10 | W8 | D1 | L1 | GF24 | GA8 | GD+16 | PTS25
EURO 2039 - 3/4 | PLD3 | W1 | D1 | L1 | GF4 | GA3 | GD+1 | PTS4
--
EURO 2041 (Q) - 2/6 | PLD10 | W8 | D1 | L1 | GF22 | GA3 | GD+19 | PTS25
EURO 2041 - 3/4 | PLD3 | W0 | D1 | L2 | GF3 | GA6 | GD-3 | PTS1
--
EURO 2043 (Q) - 1/6 | PLD10 | W9 | D1 | L0 | GF28 | GA1 | GD+27 | PTS28
EURO 2043 - 2/4 | PLD3 | W2 | D0 | L1 | GF4 | GA3 | GD+1 | PTS6 lost in semi-finals
Period: October 2034 to October 2044
Trophies: 0 (-)

They have qualified for three tournaments. The first, EURO 2037, they missed after woefully placing 4th. However, they've made all three since, performing outstandingly most recently for EURO 2043 by winning 9/10 and conceding just once. They even got out the group in 2043, unlike in 2039 and 2041, but were eliminated in the semi-finals by England. They're midway through the 2045 edition cycle and have just won their group to make EURO 2045 next year. Pleased to see them doing well, I actually enjoyed my time there despite the failure.

The next WATN? will be with Khimki in 2047 (three years away). Thanks for reading!

2044 - August and September:
August and September sees us, Krylia Sovetov, continue our quest for UEFA Europa League group stage football as well as us properly starting the league campaign.

A packed fixture list! We have qualified for the group stages of the Europa League, so have had fourteen matches to play in these two months. We finished the Vålerenga tie to start August, we held a 4–1 first leg victory and drew the second leg 1–1 in Oslo, Robin Westlin scoring on his return Scandinavia. Our second league match of the season was away to Russian Cup holders Zenit, we vitally beat them 0–2 via goals from defender Peter Bertilsson and forward Nicolás Arias. A rare free mid-week followed before a match with Fakel Voronezh at the Samara Arena, Westlin and Arias got on the scoresheet to secure a second straight win.

The UEFA Europa League play-off round draw got us a meeting with Finnish champions HJK, meaning a second trip to Finland in this qualifying campaign; after SJK in the 2QR. We won comfortably in leg one 3–1, Konrad Görlitz scored for his eighth goal in seven qualifiers; midfielders Gordan Cvitanovic and Mikhail Kozlov also notched. Back in the Premier Division, we faced Dynamo Moscow on 20 August and secured a 2–4 victory. Arias standing out with a superb hat-trick after Anton Yatsuk scored first. The second leg with HJK came on the following Thursday and we fixed our Europa League group berth with a 0–2 win at the Telia 5G -areena; Görlitz scoring yet again.

August 2044 ended with a hosting of Ufa in the league, we beat them 3–0 after Görlitz finally scored for the club in the league, typically with a hat-trick - like London buses! I set up a friendly with Inter Milan in the international break so we could face a top European side ahead of our Europa League group run, which was needed as we drew an extremely difficult Group A: Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Red Star Belgrade. Some draw! The exhibition with Inter ended in a narrow 0–1 win for the Italians.

After the international break, we had a match with Rostov in the Premier Division. A poor performance followed, which against a top team will cost you; we lost after a 73rd-minute strike from Alexandr Petrov, a player I sold to Rostov at Mordovia. Then came the game of the save so far, a home match against Manchester United - the team I support! They aren't what they used to be, not finishing in the top four for six seasons. They still had too much for us though and comfortably won 0–2. A run of two straight defeats needed ending, that it did following a 2–3 win in Makhachkala vs. Anzhi; Kozlov and Yatsuk getting us back from 2–1 down.

The Russian Cup got underway for us on 21 September, with a match with First Division club Armavir. A rotated eleven acquired a fairly straightforward victory by beating them 1–2, summer signing Branislav Kovacevic and youngster Alexey Zaitsev scored. Four days later, our first-team line-up lost in the league to Sibir; a newly-promoted team flying high. We actually bossed the majority of the match, but didn't take our chances - they did. Thankfully we responded outstandingly with a crucial four-goal victory in Serbia against Red Star Belgrade. Arias and Kozlov got a brace apiece to secure a superb win!

We sit 5th in the league, but do have a game in hand on 4th and are just four points off 2nd. Krasnodar are already doing what they did last season by absolutely dominating. As you'll notice, Russia has been re-awarded a continental place, meaning 1st and 2nd get UEFA Champions League while 3rd and 4th get UEFA Europa League; as well as the cup winner. Our official expectation is to qualify for the Europa League again, but it should be tight below Krasnodar so Champions League is a possibility. Two games down in Group A in Europe, that win in Serbia was key as we sit 3rd behind United and Dortmund who drew on Matchday 2. In the cup, we've been drawn with third tier outfit Lada; should win.

The transfer window has shut, two players have left. Andrey Petrov joins Amkar for 425k, while Alexey Petrov has joined my former club Mordovia on loan. Mordovia were actually relegated last season, but have started the season brightly in tier two. That, as well as the awards and squad stats are below.

2044 - June and July:
My second season with Krylia Sovetov kickstarts with a UEFA Europa League qualifying round adventure. We'd start in the first qualifying round, hoping to go through round-by-round and achieve the board's expectation of a group stage berth.

After pre-season matches with RB Leipzig (1–2 L) and Iași (2–2 pW), we were drawn in the 1QR with Icelandic Pepsi-deild karla club Valur. We absolutely bossed both legs but only came away with a 0–2 aggregate victory, Konrad Görlitz and Alexandr Uljanov scoring; should've netted more. It was enough to put us through to the 2QR to face SJK of Finland. It was more of the same as vs. Valur but with a key difference - goals! We advanced 9–1 on aggregate via a 0–5 win in Seinäjoki and a 4–1 win at the Samara Arena. German striker Görlitz scored a hat-trick in leg one and a brace in leg two; Nicolás Arias also achieved a trio of goals over the two legs. Excellent performances!

In the 3QR, we were awarded a match-up with five-time Norwegian top-flight champions Vålerenga. The second leg in Oslo is yet to be played, but we looked to have ended the tie in the first leg thanks to a dominant 4–1 triumph. Arias with the hat-trick this time, Görlitz couldn't keep himself off the scoresheet either. Leg two is in the following week, I'll be resting my entire eleven due to our extremely difficult start to the league campaign. Days after the encounter with Vålerenga, we hosted league champions Krasnodar in the Premier Division. We lost 0–2, they look just as good as last season already. Ominous. League fixture list doesn't get too much easier with Zenit up next, just two days after the second Vålerenga leg.

I've enjoyed this European run, the first continental football tasted in this save in UEFA; had only experienced it in AFC with Persib and Eastern between 2018 and 2026. Hopefully we can advance to the group stages. Board expectations, squad statistics and awards are below.

Transfers have occurred. Seven players arrived: Kim Yoon-Ho (Free, GK, Daejeon Citizen). Daniel Freitas (700k, LB, Paços Ferreira). Robin Westlin (675k, FW, Royal Antwerp). Joseph Davies (Loan, CB, West Ham United). Azamat Nikishin (1.9m, RB, Ufa). Mikhail Kozlov (1.3m, CM, Lokomotiv Moscow). Branislav Kovacevic (Free, LW, Lokomotiv Moscow). Kim is our new back-up goalkeeper as we lost our other two, Freitas is our new left-back, Westlin joins permanently following a loan spell, Davies comes in on loan to replace the departed Salvador Sineiro, Nikishin is our new right-back, Kozlov is a starting central midfielder and Kovacevic is a back-up left-winger. Happy with our business.

As for outs (notable): Salvador Sineiro (3m, CB, Austria Vienna). Maxim Schegolkov (Retired, GK). Dmitry Tseryuta (Free, RB, Neftekhimik). Alexey Potapov (375k, CB, Ufa). Matt Hull (Loan, RM, Orenburg). Sineiro a big loss but he wanted out, 3m a great fee. The others were just squad players.

2044 - April and May:
After a drop of form throughout the start 2044, we had to improve if we wanted to secure a UEFA Europa League place for next season.

European football secured! We've finished 3rd to secure a UEFA Europa League qualifying spot for 2044–45! Fantastic achievement. We'll enter at the very early embers of the competition, the first qualifying round. Looking forward to it. April and May started off extremely well but didn't end plain sailing as we almost bottled it, but thankfully we got what we deserved.

My former club Mordovia were our first opponents of April, Nicolás Arias put us ahead before Rustem Borisov, a man I had during my days at Khimki, equalised. It was looking like we'd drop points but didn't, thanks to an own-goal from Vadim Mamaev. A damaging defeat to fellow top three fighters CSKA Moscow followed, Vyacheslav Biryukov got them the win but they didn't deserve it. We needed to respond and did just that by impressively winning our next five fixtures. Arias got us the three points away to Arsenal Tula, before Alexandr Uljanov scored for a crucial home win over Zenit - a side almost going for Europe.

Uljanov was the hero again in the following two matches, scoring goals versus Orenburg (1–2) and Tom (0–1). A fifth consecutive win then came against struggling Amkar, Arias with two goals. Great run of results, which put us in 2nd and six points inside the top three with just nine points available. However, that six point gap vanished quickly as we lost back-to-back to Dynamo Moscow and reigning league champions Rostov. That loss to Rostov was destructive as it allowed Rostov to leapfrog into 3rd, dropping us to 4th on Games Won and head-to-head results. Going into the final day, we had to beat Ufa on the road while we needed a favour from Amkar away to Rostov.

We did our job by sneaking past Ufa by winning 1–2, Uljanov scoring again as well as fellow central midfielder Yegor Yefimov. Meanwhile over at the Rostov Arena, the hosts took an early lead before Brayan Salazar received a red card. Six minutes later, ex-Vojvodina player Zvonko Djurovic levelled it up for Amkar. It remained 1–1 until the final whistle, therefore securing us a place in next season's UEFA Europa League! We got a little fortunate in the end, but we merit a top three finish.

Bring on next season. It has been an excellent first season with Krylia Sovetov, excited for the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. Hopefully we can make a run of it, not sure how far we should expect to go; third quali. round at least, I'd say. Luck of the draw!

2043 to 2044 - December to March:
We, Krylia Sovetov, head into 2044 sat 2nd in the Russian Premier Division table. The title isn't a real possibility as Krasnodar are on fire but that's never been the aim for the season anyway, a challenge for a European place is the goal.

We've dropped to 5th. Only a point off of 2nd, but it has been a disappointing few months. Form has dropped severely, winning just once in six competitive fixtures. It started with a defeat in the derby against rivals Rubin Kazan, they were way too good for us; Ruslan Nazarov scored. We hosted bottom of the table Ural next in the final match of 2043 and comfortably beat them 2–0 thanks to a goals from Nicolás Arias and Yegor Yefimov. In the winter break we took a trip to Portugal and faced four LigaPro sides, including Porto B. We won all four, the most notable was an action-packed 4–6 win at the Estádio José Santos Pinto vs. Sporting Covilhã; four goals on debut for new signing Konrad Görlitz.

Our first competitive fixture back was a big one. A Russian Cup quarter-final with Zenit. Sadly, it was over before it begun as Zenit won 4–1. They were three ahead inside twenty minutes. One of those games. When Krasnodar battered us in August, they were superb - Zenit, not so much. League action resumed with a trip to Voronezh to play Fakel, we were held to a 2–2; fortunate to get a point in truth. Since then, back-to-back defeats to Lokomotiv Moscow and Krasnodar. No goals scored, tough two opponents though. That's why we're 5th, as soon as we dropped points the others obviously pounced. Ten fixtures to play!

Awards and squad statistics below. The mid-season transfer window saw three new faces in and three faces out. IN: Cristóvão Mendes Santos (Loan, RM, Lokomotiv Moscow). Konrad Görlitz (1m, FW, Köln). Mirsad Osmankovic (Loan, GK, Dynamo Kyiv). Santos has been signed to give competition to current right-winger Luan Rama as summer signing Matt Hull hasn't done that. Görlitz signed as a partner for Nicolás Arias, looked amazing in friendlies but nothing in competitive action. Osmankovic in as third cover for number one goalkeeper Eivind Nilsen. OUT: Daniel Ajiboye (Loan, FW, Al-Batin). Dmitry Tseryuta (Loan, RB, SKA Khabarovsk). Franko Popovic (Loan, CM, Dinamo Minsk). Three squad players wanting first-team football.

What a fantastic two months! At the midway point of the season, we are currently in 2nd! Five points off that excellent Krasnodar team, though we were actually level on points with them at one point. They're far too talented to keep up with, as shown by that mauling we suffered at their hands in August. We're inside the UEFA Europa League spots by three points, leading CSKA Moscow and Zenit in the table. Below that, we are eight clear of 7th which is pleasant. It has been an excellent start, hopefully we can maintain it. The board are very happy, with my job status at 'untouchable'.

A win over bottom half Arsenal Tula kicked off October, Nicolás Arias notching two goals. Superleague Greece team Aris then beat us in an international break friendly 2–0. Competitively we were on a four-match winning streak at this point, that was extended to seven after three straight wins. The first two were in the Premier Division versus Tom and Orenburg with 2–0 and 1–0 wins respectively, Robin Westlin joining Anton Yatsuk and Ruslan Nazarov in the scoring ranks; Nazarov with a 91st-minute winner v. Orenburg as a substitute! Then came our Russian Cup sixth round encounter with Dynamo Moscow, I fielded my full-strength team and was duly rewarded.

We didn't actually play too well but secured a quarter-final spot after a dramatic extra time victory. It looked all but over in normal time until Luan Rama popped up to level on 90 minutes, while in extra time it was an own-goal from John Asamoah which sent us through! We'll play Zenit in the next round. November arrived with back-to-back draws, 0–0 to Amkar and 1–1 to Rostov; the latter was an excellent point away to the reigning champions. Another friendly loss followed to a Greek top-flight side, this time to OFI Crete. We met Dynamo Moscow again one week later and beat them by the same scoreline - 2–1. It was again dramatic with Salvador Sineiro snatching us the win at the death!

Ufa were our final test of these two months and we played out a 1–1 draw with them, Arias on the scoresheet for us. CSKA Moscow failed to win so we remained 2nd. Fifteen matches to go, I'd be shocked if there was any let off from Krasnodar so our goal is to qualify for the UEFA Europa League; even though our expectation is to only finish top half. Awards and squad statistics are below.

2043 - August and September:
It's 2043 and I have started my eleventh job in management with Krylia Sovetov, my fourth club Russian job in a row. Perhaps I should rename this the Complete Russia Challenge?

Our opening to the new campaign has gone pretty well after eight matches, even if performances and off-field things have made it a tad difficult start to life in Samara. Pre-season went good, losing just once (to Queens Park Rangers) and winning the other six (most notably to FCI Tallinn and Guntamatic Ried). My first competitive fixture at the helm of Krylia was a big one, a derby with fierce rivals Rubin Kazan. A lot of build-up to it, but the contest itself was a rather damp squib. Rubin had a man sent off in the second half but it changed literally nothing. A home debut versus newly-promoted Fakel Voronezh followed, one of my summer signings Robin Westlin scored goal one prior to Salvador Sineiro and Nicolás Arias getting goals two and three.

Another victory came next in Yekaterinburg against Ural, we raced out the gates and were 0–3 up after fifty minutes. The points were secured, despite a late Ural fight back. These results put us in 2nd place after three fixtures, two points off leaders Krasnodar who we faced next. As you can see, we got absolutely battered by a sensational Krasnodar team. One of those matches where you actually sit in awe of your opponents, they were truly outstanding and thoroughly merited a 5–1 win. Next was a hosting of rivals Lokomotiv Moscow, who to had started the season very well. It ended goalless, I was happy with the performance; responded well to that loss to Krasnodar. Avangard gave us friendly opposition to start September, we won 1–3.

CSKA Moscow, another rival, were our first match-up of September 2043, they beat us at the Samara Arena thanks to a brace from their academy graduate Maxim Taibov. On 19 September, I returned to the Mordovia Arena to face my former club Mordovia, who have started the first season in six without me poorly. Westlin scored a brace to give me the three points in my first visit back to Saransk. Five days later, we travelled to the Kabardino-Balkar Republic to meet Spartak Nalchik in the fifth round of the Russian Cup. This fixture fell just two days before a crucial league match with Zenit so I was forced to rotate my line-up, even though I want to take the cup seriously. To my happiness, the reserves came in and got the job by winning 0–2. Nigerian forward Daniel Ajiboye got the opener before 16-year old debutant Andrey Dolgov got the second - what dreams are made of for the young centre-back!

Russian Cup progression was followed with Premier Division delight. On the following Saturday we made the trip to Saint Petersburg to meet Zenit and returned home with all the points after a stunning 1–3 away victory! Strike partners Arias (x2) and Westlin got the goals to make it 0–3, Zenit got a late consolation but it didn't damper the result. Superb performance, quite comfortably our best of my short tenure. That leaves us 5th, which I am very happy with. Two points off 2nd. As you may be able to see, Russia have lost a continental football place so it's just the top three who get in now, not four. Quite typical when I finally reach a job that's got European potential they make it harder to qualify. The Russian Cup winner still gets a UEFA Europa League spot, hence why I'll be taking that seriously; scheduling dependant.

The board expectation is a top half finish and a cup quarter-final place. We're well on course for that. Expectations, records/awards and squad stats are below.

I mentioned off-field stuff has made the start of my reign a pain in the backside, I was referring to the transfer window. Every man and his dog wanted to leave this summer it felt like, with them getting hasty at the slightest transfer rumour; countless key players came to moan at me, most of them got want they wanted which made my incoming transfers, of which that in itself was also a pain, even more important. In the end, I feel like it went as well as it could've. Five in, ten out.

IN: Radu Tincu (Loan, LM, FCSB). Robin Westlin (Loan, FW, Royal Antwerp). Matt Hull (Free, RM, LA Galaxy). Peter Bertilsson (1m, CB, Guingamp). Elvind Nilsen (1.1m, GK, Zenit). Tincu was first in, we had an ageing back-up LM whose contract expired so needed a new back-up. I had Tincu on loan at Mordovia last season and he was excellent, so he was perfect here. Westlin came in as back-up striker, but has hit the ground running with six goals in seven matches! The Swedish forward is looking an expert piece of business if I do say so myself. Bertilsson came in to replace (against my wishes) Bruno Lemercier and has done nicely thus far, happy with him. Similar story with Nilsen, he replaced Valery Prokhorov who deserted us.

OUT (notable): Denis Dorokhov (LM), Mikk Meijel (GK) (Released). Vladimir Garaev (400k, RM, Dynamo Moscow). Alexey Potapov (Loan, LM, Kuban). Bruno Lemercier (3m, CB), Alexey Averjanov (3.5m, RM), Alexey Zhuravlev (775k, CM) (Zenit). Valery Prokhorov (2.8m, GK, Sochaux). Andrija Stojkovic (37.5k, GK, Dynamo Saint Petersburg). The pricks were Garaev, Lemercier, Averjanov, Zhuravlev and Prokhorov. All of them pounced on the slightest of mummers to force moves, almost making us make panic buys; decided not to. I'm only just now getting to know the squad so haven't missed those who have left, but it did make me question the squad. Zenit signed three of 'em, made our win over them even sweeter; though Averjanov did score.

2043 - April and May:
The 2042–43 season comes to a close with ten final fixtures with Mordovia in the top-flight. That's not the biggest news story, though...

Fixtures:

We remain unmoved and finish the season in 11th, an excellent outcome in a season that could've gone worse but thankfully we found form in 2043. We won three of our last five. More on that in a moment. The big news to come out of April was this:

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/tj5mflfqBeEjLyipfiQPVMJZfxRImtA3b0CrvdIM.png

I have agreed to become the new manager of Krylia Sovetov! That's correct, my eleventh job in management will be with fellow Russian Premier League outfit Krylia Sovetov. I was planning to leave Mordovia anyway, but to get poached by a different club is pleasing. As mentioned in the last post, I was linked with the job via the media and I indulged the rumours by claiming I was interested, their fans endorsed me soon after. That was in March, on 10 April they offered me an interview which I attended. It went well and, on 15 April, they offered me the job! As I also said, I only wanted to sign a deal starting from next season to avoid jumping ship with Mordovia. I start a few weeks after this campaign. Buzzing! A definite step-up, a team that should be regularly chasing European football; they underachieved in 8th this season.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/MmnGLYJfFH7PrT7pGdRLwH5KKW4DLfIEfT1MEF8Q.png

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/TliDN8WlrpEh0lrCNg0WhNC9C1ezVbvbVfTgvbdU.png

That's the future, now the past. April 2043 with Mordovia started with a draw to Ufa with ten men, prior to a brilliant home win over Rubin Kazan after goals from Evgeny Polyatskin and Lassina Doumbia (who was recalled in January from his productive loan with Ural). Polyatskin scored again next time out against Sibir, but it meant nothing as the eventual relegation play-off side beat us 2–1 with a Vasilije Bakic double. Back-to-back 0–0 ties followed versus Akhmat (terrible, bottom of the league) and Tom (credible), before a key victory over positional rivals Dynamo Moscow; club icon Vasily Sidorov finally ending his season-long goal drought to get us three points. The 35-year old has shown his age this season, but has ended the season on fire.

He scored again next time out in a defeat to Zenit, before grabbing consecutive braces versus Arsenal Tula and Lokomotiv Moscow. We beat Arsenal 0–3 for our biggest league win of the season, Lepskiy also converting. Sidorov's two vs. Lokomotiv were penalties, but Lokomotiv were fighting for the title at the time but we ended their hopes; controversial refereeing in that one, Lokomotiv missed a PK. Our season ended with an excellent home draw to Krasnodar, against a team who were also fighting for the title; all they had to do was beat us and the title was theirs. They didn't, so Rostov are league champions! My future club could've got UEFA Europa League football but suffered some disappointing results near the end so ended 8th. We finish 11th, very happy with that.

So, after 192 matches (W85 D49 L58 GF210 GA174 GD+36 W%44 PRO2 REL1 TRO1) I leave my post as Mordovia manager. I have fully enjoyed my six years with the club, for sure my most enjoyable tenure thus far. I truly hope they can remain a Premier Division for the foreseeable future. With that said, I can't wait to join Krylia Sovetov!

Thanks for reading!

Next: 2043 - August and September (w/ Krylia Sovetov)
