2049 - September and October:
My first full campaign with Shakhtar Donetsk continues. The Premier League and Ukrainian Cup carry on, while our UEFA Champions League Group C campaign begins.

A Klasychne derby clash versus under-performing Dynamo Kyiv began September 2049 at the Donbass Arena. We beat last year's runners-up 1–0 via a José Eduardo Oliveira goal. We then faced new title challengers Karpaty three days later and were held to a draw, Jordan Garcia scored a late penalty but Wesley got Karpaty a point. Beşiktaş were our first Champions League group opponents, we lost on home soil quite convincingly by two goals; the result was the half-time score. That was actually my first loss as Shakhtar manager. Back in the Premier League, we played newly-promoted Tytan Donetsk and won 2–0 thanks to goals from Ales Soukup and Garcia.

We then won in the Ukrainian Cup R3 L1 vs. Olimpik Donetsk 0–3 with a rotated line-up. A second September draw followed away to bottom of the table Zorya Luhansk. Our first away trip in UCL Group C saw us visit Spain and Vigo to meet Celta. We got thrashed 4–0, we were shocking but Celta were outstanding; Alan Benítez got a hat-trick. That was frustrating, but even worse followed as we lost our unbeaten streak in the league with defeat, at home, to second bottom Metalurg Zaporizhia. No idea what happened there, their centre-back Joelmir Amâncio got both goals. Odd one. An international break followed, which meant a friendly - with Olimpik Kharkiv, we won 0–6.

A week later, we put that Metalurg disappointment behind us as we beat title-chasing Olexandriуa 4–2, a goal apiece for Soukup, Garcia, Óscar Santos and Marcos Vinicius. Much improved. Matchday 3 in the UCL saw a first of a double with Liga NOS team Sporting CP, away. On MD1 and MD2, we were terrible but we performed a bit better in Lisbon but still fell to a deserved defeat. Three defeats from three in Europe, not good but UEFA Europa League football is still a possibility but we need to get our things together if we want European football in the new year. We had our first goalless draw of my tenure on 23 October, vs. Dnipro.

Despite stuttering form in these two months, we ended them with back-to-back victories in cup and league. We built on our first leg win in the cup vs. Olimpik Donetsk of 0–3 by winning 2–1 in leg two, again with a back-up team; eighteen year old striker Denis Sidorenko grabbing his first career goal along with a penalty from defender Taras Antonov. We're into the quarter-finals, where we'll play Vorskla over two legs. The final match of October 2049 was probably the best of the two months - a 0–4 away win over rivals Dynamo Kyiv - Júnior scored an early brace to go with first half goals from Soukup and Vinicius.

Recap: 1st in the Premier League, four points clear. 4th in the Champions League, need big improvements. Into the QFs of the Ukrainian Cup, looking good on that front. Already won the Super Cup, beat Zorya earlier in the campaign. My 1,100 career match was the 2–2 draw with Zorya in the league on 25 September. Squad statistics are below.

2049 - June to August:
My first full season with Shakhtar Donetsk has begun. A packed schedule greets the new season, three friendlies are joined by the start of the UEFA Champions League and Ukrainian Cup campaigns, the Super Cup final and, of course, the start of our Premier League defence.

Fixtures:

Our three friendlies were won against Ufa, Swansea City and Chelsea. We scraped past Ufa, but destroyed UEFA Europa League holders (!) Swansea and English giants Chelsea - those two wins over UK opposition were a sign of things to come. First up was a Champions League qualifying double against Budućnost Podgorica of Montenegro. We eased into the third qualifying round with a 7–1 aggregate scoreline, José Eduardo Oliveira scored a hat-trick in a 0–4 away win while Pavel Karasev got a rotated line-up started in a 3–1 home win. That first leg domination allowed us to rest players in leg two ahead of the league opener vs. Dnipro.

That was a help as we beat Dnipro 0–3. Ales Soukup, Oliveira and new signing Daisuke Yoshida grabbed goals. In the 3QR of the UCL, we got drawn with Dinamo Minsk of Belarus. It was a repeat of the 2QR as we won the first leg by four unanswered goals. Marcos Vinicius netted a hat-trick this time. Four days later, on 1 August, we had our first opportunity for silverware this season in the form of the 2049 Super Cup final against cup winners Zorya Luhansk. It wasn't much of a contest though as we dismantled the Ljubisa Grujic managed team 0–6 at the Regional Sports Complex in Donetsk. Two trophies in five months. Not bad!

Just like in UCL 2QR, I rested the first eleven for the second leg versus Dinamo Minsk. Our Belarusian friends performed much better on their home turf, but Oliveira scored to get us our sixth straight win to start the season. 1–0/0–1 was to become a frequent scoreline, we won by that score in all but one of our following six fixtures. Desna were the first recipients, right-winger Yuriy Savanchuk with the goal there. Volyn were up next days later, we actually beat them by two goals; which came via Soukup and signing Jordan Garcia. Both of those were away, a home match came on 14 August vs. Vorskla and we won once more 1–0.

In the final qualifying round of the Champions League, we got paired with Czechia side Viktoria Plzeň. We advanced to the groups stage with a 0–2 aggregate win, winning both legs by that one-goal scoreline. Henning Huseklepp and Júnior with the winners. Delighted to make it into the group stages, got favourable draws but Shakhtar hadn't made the UCL GS since 2046; a welcomed return. Sandwiched inbetween those Plzeň games, we got our Ukrainian Cup run started with a tie versus second tier Gelios. I rested key players once more due to scheduling conflicts, and it almost cost us as the tier two mid-table club performed excellently and almost sent it to extra time, if not for an extremely unfortunate own-goal by David Nikitin - a shot was firing way, way wide but it hit him and sliced in. Very lucky!

That win in the cup made it twelve straight wins to start 2049–50. Pretty outstanding stuff. Those runs only last for so long, ours ended in the final match of these two months. We led Chornomorets Odesa 2–1 until 92mins, when Gerard Torres snatched an undeserved leveller for Chornomorets. Painful, made even worse by the fact I managed Torres for a year at Krylia Sovetov between 2046 and 2047. I sold him to Norwich City, yet our paths have met again in 2049 in Ukraine. Football! Disappointing, but if I'm getting disappointed at an unlucky draw then that shows how good we're playing this season so far.

Despite a superb start, we aren't top of the Premier League table. Karpaty somehow are. We've played a game less than them and only trail 'em by a point. Aside from Karpaty, we already have a four point lead over 3rd. Dynamo Kyiv, last season's runners-up, are struggling down in 11th (second bottom). When I joined Shakhtar, they were having financial troubles - in the summer they let go a load of their top talent to help their finances, that's shown in their start to this campaign. Our Champions League group is excellent. We avoided all the big boys, still have it tough with Celta Vigo, Sporting CP and Beşiktaş but that's to be expected in the UCL - delighted to avoid the big guns. We won the Super Cup as mentioned, while in R3 of the cup we'll face city rivals Olimpik Donetsk (tier two).

Expectations, records and squad stats are below.

The transfer window saw six incomings and nine outgoings.

INS:
Jordan Garcia (Free, RW, Lyon)
Valentyn Chesnakov (Free, CB, Vorskla)
Hiroshi Katô (Free, GK, Tottenham Hotspur)
Daisuke Yoshida (Free, CAM, Albirex Niigata (J))
Gordan Cvitanovic (£1m, CM, Krylia Sovetov)
Richárd Fekecs (£3.1m, CM, Juventus)

Garcia has been a very good signing with four goals in nine games with two assists, I was the one who decided to sign him despite my scouts not rating him at all - glad I listened to my gut! Chesnakov was similarly unrated by scouts, but I signed him anyway for squad depth; limited chances but done OK when needed. Katô was signed for depth as we only had two 'keepers, on a free from Spurs. He has surprisingly become first-choice as Josef Ljungberg got injured in pre-season. Yoshida is a back-up CAM, done well so far. Cvitanovic and Fekecs are depth for central midfield, we only had two proper CMs to start the season; I managed Cvitanovic at Krylia for six years - trusted.

OUTS (notable):
Andrey Konovalov (Loan, FW, Thun)
Vadim Mishin (Loan, LW, PEC Zwolle)
Masaki Dobashi (Retired, CM, n/a)
Sergey Sukhov (Free, CM, Rayo Vallecano)
Alexey Pavlov (Loan, FW, Marítimo)
Edmundo Teixeira (Loan, GK, Angers)

Konovalov and Pavlov are young strikers, both are promising but need first-team football which they'll get at Thun and Marítimo respectively. Mishin and Teixeira wanted loan moves, the latter was annoying as we're back down to two first-team 'keepers. Dobashi retired, Sukhov had already agreed to sign for Rayo before I arrived. Two decent midfielders out, hence their replacements in Cvitanovic and Fekecs.

2049 - April to June:
I start my new job with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. I'm thrown in at the deep end of 2048–49 with the club currently performing below expectations. I joined with ten matches left to play in the Championship Group, four points behind leaders Dynamo Kyiv. The board is expecting the title.

What a debut as Shakhtar manager. League leaders Dynamo Kyiv at the Donbass Arena. Igor Demchenko gave them the perfect start, prior to a twenty minute turnaround from us via José Eduardo Oliveira and an own-goal from the aforementioned Demchenko. We were on the way to the best possible start, but sadly conceded an equaliser in the second half to drop points in game one which kept the gap to top to four points heading into the final nine fixtures. Still time to turn it around, but not a good beginning to life in Donetsk.

We hit back with four straight victories. Karpaty were our first away opponents and we returned home with three points in dramatic fashion. Centre-back Henning Huseklepp puts us ahead but Wesley hit back for Karpaty, it looked like we would drop yet more points but, in a huge move, out-of-form right-back Vitaliy Pervak stepped up with a massive strike from outside the box, right on 93 minutes (see below). Such a big goal. That moment was made better as Dynamo drew with Vorskla, meaning we closed the gap to two points. They won next time out vs. Volyn, as did we against third place Olexandriуa with an impressive 4–0 win; Oliveira hat-trick.

Another big scoreline was to come, and it was totally unexpected. The gap remained two points with Dynamo and we played them after Olexandriуa. Incredibly, we dominated the match completely and scored five unanswered goals to win 0–5 at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium! Oliveira and Marcos Vinicius grabbed a brace each in a stunning win. That took us top of the table with five matches left. Volyn actually held us to a frustrating 1–1 draw a week later, but it was a point gained as Karpaty beat Dynamo 0–3 away from home. Very surprising! Two points was the gap heading into the final month of games.

Karpaty were our next opponents and we didn't make the same mistake as Dynamo as we dispatched the Lviv club 2–1 on home soil, we did leave it late but won it via Óscar Santos on 84mins. Dynamo won too, so that was a crucial goal from left-winger Santos. A second straight win then came versus Vorskla on the third-to-last matchday, Oliveira scoring his eighth goal in eight since my arrival. More great news followed as Olexandriуa beat Dynamo with an 89th-minute winner from Sergiy Sakhno. That meant we were five points clear with six points left to play for, meaning if we beat Olexandriуa on 29 May we would become Premier League champions. Before that, we had a friendly win over Chornomorets Odesa.

We faced and beat Olexandriуa at the Donbass Arena 2–0. Ukrainian Premier League champions! Ales Soukup and a Marcos Vinícius own-goal was enough for victory and to secure Shakhtar their thirty-first league title, their ninth in a row. Happy to bring success to the club in my first few months, nice trophy to add to my collection too! Four days later we had a celebratory final league match of the season against Volyn, we ended 2048–49 with a 3–1 win; goals from Sousa (o.g.), Oliveira and Vinicius. Dynamo lost their final match, meaning we ended up winning the league by ten points; the most Shakhtar have won it by since 2045–46; most points since then too.

That's the season over. I'm already looking forward to next season, hoping to make it ten straight league titles but also have a go in the other competitions. The Super Cup and Ukrainian Cup, but also in Europe in the UEFA Champions League; where we'll start from the second qualifying round in mid-July. Awards/records and squad stats are below.

Thanks for your support. I really had a shock that I was able to pull off a promotion from the first season.

Hoping this would continue to my following seasons.

Definitely was a tough season with a lot of times I wanted to just alt + f4 and just restart the game but I stood firm and didn't and it paid off.

Nice. The annoying parts of Football Manager make the great parts greater!

2048 to 2049 - The Job Search:
2048 sees another job search after a sacking from Krylia Sovetov saw an end to my five-year reign. It's the first time I've had to search for a job since 2037!

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/NHhJdUlA5XrJTE2i4ZowGXLIs8nMkC0JnCvyiTmt.png

Immediately, after leaving Krylia in November 2048, there were no standout jobs open. I had planned to leave Krylia in 2050, and the plan would've been to get a team in a near European league that basically dominates their league; e.g. Ludogorets, Shakhtar Donetsk, FCSB etc. Those sort of clubs would mean a step down in league for certain, but as a club it would be a step up as we'd be challenging for the title and cups every season with European football rather than just a rat race for Europe. So, despite leaving just under two years early from Russia, I decided to keep the same plan.

Firstly, I holidayed through to 1 January 2049. I felt it would be realistic for my manager to take a short break, rather than immediately rushing back into a job. In January 2049, no job interested me at all; Dinamo București in Romania were available, as a job that somewhat interested me but it didn't fit the plan as they're basically Krylia, but in Romania - so it would've been a pointless move. It took until April to get a job, in the time in-between there were no real jobs I wanted. I was offered three jobs on the spot, but all three were international nations in Norway, Nigeria and South Africa. Not wanting international management yet one bit, but nice to get offers.

Anyway, as March came to a close I noticed a key detail in this job search. Ukrainian champions of the last eight seasons Shakhtar Donetsk were not having a good season, going between 2nd and 3rd behind Dynamo Kyiv and Olexandriуa, so subsequently their manager was under pressure with his job status at 'insecure'. There was a chance, so I declared my interest in the Shakhtar job; not expecting anything right away. However, Shakhtar pretty immediately sacked their manager after my declare of interest. Surely that was because of me, or was it sheer coincidence?

With Sergiy Larin out of the hot seat, I again declared my interest in the job as well as of course applying. The media made me favourites instantly, while their fans didn't know what to think as at first they 'laughed me off' but a few days later considered me the 'leading candidate'. Shakhtar then offered me the interview, which went, I thought, fantastically. No disagreements, they don't have a director of football. All went well. Five days later, Shakhtar went and offered me the job. So, I am delighted to announce...

I am the new manager of Shakhtar Donetsk! Delighted. The perfect job for this stage in the career. Although, it won't be plain sailing as the team currently sit 2nd in the Premier League, four points off Dynamo Kyiv with ten matches to play in the league split. My debut as Shakhtar boss? Versus Dynamo Kyiv, of course. Huge match! I only have the league to focus on as Larin got them knockout out of Europe and of the Ukrainian Cup. I can't wait to get started!

2048 - November and December:
Back again with another update for Krylia Sovetov, way earlier than I expected and than I would've liked. Here's why.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/NHhJdUlA5XrJTE2i4ZowGXLIs8nMkC0JnCvyiTmt.png

I've been sacked.

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/9xjuvqCNoatDAut4KXhHsvpg0qDxdXjcZOAY58ou.png

Yep. Just like that. In the three matches since my last post, we did go three winless. However, after those matches we sat 9th (very poor, but only five points off 2nd -expectation- with 17 to play) in the league, 3rd in the UEFA Europa League [just 1pt off the top two, the expectation was 'be competitive'] and still in the Russian Cup. Yet I'm dismissed, all effectively because of one match. We played Vitória Guimarães on Matchday 4 of the Europa League, performance wasn't the best, we were on top but subsequently lost after a injury-time winner for the Portuguese side. Unlucky, right? Not according to the board, they called a meeting to discuss the aforementioned result. Odd thing to do, but OK. I say it was an unlucky result, they disagree and insist I must win next time out to keep my job. We then lost to Mordovia 4–0. Despicable result, now sacked.

Ridiculous sacking, in my opinion. Poetically versus my ex-club. The Krylia board didn't even mention the form, even in the sacking media item it was due to that one singular result. It doesn't quite make sense, but that's the quirks you get with Football Manager sometimes; I wouldn't have it any other way.

The save certainly continues! I'll now go in search for job number twelve! I will not be staying in Russia.

2048 - September and October:
After starting 2048–49 well with Krylia Sovetov, the form dropped off towards to the end of July and August so a pick-up of performances was needed heading into September and October 2048.

Fixtures:

Table:

Competitions:
https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Yh4F8dkn6f54X6HvYqqDq5o7uw7va9Ngjb7CTS1n.png

Youngster Nikolay Koneev got us underway with a hat-trick in a friendly win over Tosno. Ufa away was our first competitive fixture of September, the first of four straight away games in all competitions. We drew 2–2 with Ufa at the Neftyanik Stadium in gutting fashion, Anton Yatsuk and Didier Sylla put us two goals ahead but Ufa fought back with two goals after 89mins to secure themselves a lucky point. Our UEFA Europa League Group B campaign got going four days later with a trip to El Madrigal to meet Villarreal, a venue where we won 2–4 at last season in the first knockout round. This time around it was less memorable as we lost 2–1.

A return to league action saw us face Sibir, which brought a second consecutive defeat as the relegation fighters beat us thanks to a 69th-minute Santos goal. We then got a first win in seven competitive fixtures in the Russian Cup fifth round against Tyumen on 24 September, Maxim Taibov and Sylla scored the all important goals. Unfortunately, the losing streak was reignited with a defeat to Rostov; Taibov netted for us but we failed to beat Rostov for the fourth straight time, I've only beaten them once in eleven meetings in my Krylia tenure. Bogey team. No worries though, we battered their secondary team two weeks later 0–7 in a friendly...

Two big games then followed, home games against Fenerbahçe and CSKA Moscow. I was not confident coming into these fixtures, Fenerbahçe are Fenerbahçe and CSKA were league leaders. To my delight, we regained winning ways with back-to-back victories. Taibov scored for the third straight match to make us beat the Turkish club, while Robin Westlin got the goal to beat CSKA. Those points were needed big, big time! Lokomotiv Moscow beat us next time out at their ground, but we then went and won three out of three to end this two month period.

Matchday 3 in the Europa League saw us visit Portugal to play Vitória Guimarães. They had lost two out of two, we made it three from three with a dominant nil-three win after a Westlin brace and a Josimar own-goal. Kuban were our next league opponents, we stumbled to a narrow 2–0 win with strikes from Taibov and Alexandr Fedoseev; fortunate to beat 12th. October ended with a return to one of my former clubs in Mordovia in the next round of the Russian Cup, I came away victorious with an extra-time win; Nicolás Arias grabbing the winner in that one.

Slight improvements there, ended this period well but need it to continue; especially in the league where we sit down in 8th. My job status was actually at 'insecure' at one, short point during October. Only five points separates us and 2nd, but sadly Krasnodar are already up and away; no title challenge once again it annoyingly seems. We're looking good in the Europa League after back-to-back wins, we should build on that with group whipping boys Guimarães up again next. Meanwhile, we'll face Anzhi Makhachkala in a cup quarter-final in March 2049. Tricky. Three awards and the squad stats are below.

2048 - June to August:
2048–49 gets started, a season that will be my sixth and penultimate season in charge of Russian Premier Division outfit Krylia Sovetov - if everything goes to plan, that is.

Pre-season saw matches through Europe as the squad was split in two. The 'A' Team headed to Romania, Austria and Italy to face Concordia Chiajna, Red Bull Salzburg, LASK and Sassuolo, wins came against Concordia and Sassuolo but losses arrived versus Salzburg and LASK - new signing Maxim Taibov scoring a hat-trick vs. Sassuolo. They also faced Manchester United in the final friendly and narrowly lost. The 'B' Team meanwhile took trips to Poland, Romania and Slovakia, going unbeaten against Pogoń Siedlce, Delta Dobrogea and Železiarne Podbrezová.

The competitive season got going with the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, as it has in the previous two campaigns. We managed to avoid a Greek club this time, instead getting drawn with 2045 Serie A champions Torino. The first leg of that was played on 29 July 2048 and it was a match full of utter, utter madness. It ended 5–5 (five. five.). Five goals were scored before 40 minutes, while the other five goals came after 73 minutes. Ridiculous. Mario Peretin, Vyacheslav Biryukov and Taibov shockingly put is 3–0 up inside ten minutes, we were absolutely cruising. That, however, woke Torino up as they made it 3–2 by the interval. It then went 4–2, then 4–3 and then 5–3. Game over, right? Wrong. Sebastian Szymanski and Giulio Nucci dramatically got Torino level in the final two minutes.

Before the second leg, we began our Premier Division campaign with an away visit to Fakel Voronezh; as we did at the same stage last season. They held us to a draw then, but this time it was a much more convincing display from us as we ran out 1–4 winners at the Trade Unions Central Stadium. Fakel actually took the lead, but we played better and it eventually showed as Nicolás Arias, Gábor Gulyás (x2) and Alexandr Fedoseev sent us to victory. The second leg with Torino came a few days later and I wasn't expecting qualification after shipping five away-goals.

My confidence was misplaced as we stunned the Serie A side with a sneaky 0–1 win in Turin, Taibov scored within the first minute and we somehow managed to keep them at bay to advance 5–6 on aggregate. Stupendous double-header. We returned to league action with two straight matches, against Amkar and Orenburg. We won both matches to make it three wins from three, the only team to do so. Robin Westlin scored three goals in the two matches, keeping up his impressive record for us. I should probably mention this season I have completely sliced my squad in two. One set team for the important games, one for the games that fall in awkward places. Team 'A' has been starting the Champions League games, while Team 'B' has been playing the league games. I don't usually do that. At this point, it was working a treat.

However, the next and most recent four fixtures have gone horribly wrong; two Champions League matches, two in the league. We were drawn with Sporting CP of Liga NOS in the final qualifying round, another tough tie. We went onto lose 2–6 on aggregate as the Portuguese giants battered us 4–1 in Portugal, Didier Sylla actually made it 3–1 with an away-goal which would've been an OK result - but they scored seconds later to all but put us out. The second leg went better, but we lost on the night 1–2. The two league matches came against Dynamo Moscow and SKA Khabarovsk. We suffered a hideous 0–4 home defeat to Dynamo, mainly due to Yaroslav Romanov's straight red card after just 12 minutes. Woeful collapse, still. Another home loss followed to relegation candidates SKA, a match that was played by my first-team for their first league experience of 2048–49.

Great start, terrible end. It leaves us 5th in the league, three points off leaders CSKA Moscow. In Europe, we drop into the UEFA Europa League which I am more than happy with - our group is: Fenerbahçe, Villarreal and Vitória Guimarães. Challenging but doable. Lastly, we'll face First Division team Tyumen in round five of the cup. You can view our board expectations, squad statistics and record/awards below.

Six players arrived in the transfer window, while seven departed.

INS:
Maxim Taibov (£4.5m, FW, CSKA Moscow)
Jonathan Taylor (Free, LW, Middlesbrough)
Ludvik Novotny (Free, CB, Torino)
Lukas Nemec (Free, CB, Royal Antwerp)
Houssem Abbes (Free, GK, Newcastle United)
Sofiane Hammami (Free, LB, Greuther Fürth).

Two of the first three are first eleven players. Taibov replaces Maxim Kovalev, who returned to Krasnodar after three seasons on loan. Taibov started very well with two in two, but has been injured since the Torino matches. Novotny joins permanently after a successful loan from the aforementioned Torino, yet to feature due to injury; right before the meetings with his old club. Taylor, Nemec, Abbes and Hammami are back-ups but due to my team splitting this season they've featured a good amount; had good moments, had some bad. Overall, I'm happy with them.

OUTS:
Ricardo Palacios (£1.1m, GK, Saint-Étienne)
Alexandr Frolov (Loan, RB, Zenit-Izhevsk)
Daniel Freitas (Free, LB, Released)
Joseph Davies (£900k, CB, Crystal Palace)
Alexey Terekhov (Loan, LW, Tom)
Salah Eddine Hajib (Loan, LW, Amkar)
Alexandr Smertin (Free, LB, Torpedo Moscow)

No big outgoings, just a few squad depth. The standout leaver was Davies, who returns to England to join Crystal Palace. Good signing from West Ham United in 2044, but wanted to leave so did. Likewise Palacios, who goes to France; replaced by Abbes. Left-back Freitas had been decent for the club, but also wanted out. Frolov and Terekhov are youth players, while Moroccan winger Hajib joins Amkar on loan - I like him, but he needs regular games to improve and be ready for us. Smertin departed on a free, was third choice left-back.

2048 - April and May:
The race for second place enters its final two months. With leaders Krasnodar eleven points clear, it was left to us, Krylia Sovetov, to fight with Zenit, Ufa, CSKA Moscow and Dynamo Moscow for the big UEFA Champions League spot. We've finished 2nd for the last two seasons, so were probably favourites coming into it. Let's see how it played out.

We faced fifth placed CSKA Moscow on 4 April, we came away with a big three points as Gábor Gulyás and Maxim Kovalev scored to bring us back from a goal down to win 1–2. Another massive match followed in the shape of Ufa away, we lost that by the same scoreline - well beaten. Kovalev scored a brace next time out to make us beat Kuban, two goals in a minute from the long-term loanee from Krasnodar. Unfortunately it was to be two defeats in three as we lost to a different second place rival in Rostov on 25 April - as always seems to be the case, we just cannot beat them; losing 2–0 here.

We then went on a fantastic run by winning five of our final six fixtures. A convincing 4–1 home win over Sibir kick started the run, we were superb on this occasion and won via goals from Anton Yatsuk, Kovalev (x2) and Nicolás Arias. The confidence from that helped us secure probably our most important result of the season - a 0–2 win in Saint Petersburg over then-second place Zenit. Kovalev netted a spot-kick prior to a Gordan Cvitanovic strike. Huge three points which took us second! A clean sheet over Zenit was repeated against Lokomotiv Moscow a week later, we again won by two goals; thanks to an Arias brace this time.

Incredibly, after that result we were 'only' nine points behind Krasnodar with nine points left to play for, and we hosted Krasnodar next time out; knowing a win would shrink the gap to just six. We actually beat them! Cvitanovic scored a dramatic late winner on 85mins to give us a shock but gigantic victory. Even though it was still crazily unlikely as Krasnodar needed to lose two out of two and we had to win two out of two, it was still nice to see us enter a minor title race; keeps ups the trend of us improving every year under my stewardship. Sadly, the 'title race' was short lived as we dropped points next vs. Dynamo Moscow.

It ended 2–2. It may have won Krasnodar the title, but that wasn't our goal anyway - getting 2nd was, so stopping top five rival Dynamo from getting a win was fantastic. Going into the final day, we still had to gain victory to secure 2nd. Thankfully, we did just that by beating Anzhi Makhachkala on the road; a first half Kovalev goal won it. The season is over! A third straight second place finish has happened, I'm proud of that as Krylia had never finished 2nd before I took over, hopefully we can go one better next season though!

Loads of awards in these two months, those can be seen below along with the squad statistics for the season.

One final thing. Champions Krasnodar have just lost their manager, Roman Bulak, to Bordeaux, making that post vacant. I wasn't going to act upon it, until the media starting linking me to it. I have no plans to leave Krylia Sovetov yet, that will likely happen in 2050 (end of current contract). Plus, when I do I'd prefer to leave Russian football all together. However, I would be stupid not to put my name in the ring for the biggest job in the country. So, after the media linked me to it I responded by claiming I really wanted the job. Their fans subsequently said I was their number one. Then, Krasnodar offered me an interview. I took it, it went OK but there were a few disagreements; e.g. director of football. Sadly, in the end, they overlooked me to media favourite Nikola Zlatar. It would've been nice, but not bothered in the slightest. Worth a try!

2048 - January to March:
2048 is here! The 32nd year of the save. We enter it still with Krylia Sovetov in Russia, the club of mine for the last five years. The standout of these months is the resumption of the UEFA Europa League at the first knockout stage.

Three friendlies kicked of the new year as part of the mid-season off-season, those were: A penalty shoot-out loss in Romania vs. Dacia Unirea Brăila, a win in Poland over Bruk-Bet Termalica and finally a win in Austria against Grödig. Decent prep for our Europa League double-header versus Spanish club Villarreal. Talking of which, we met them for the first leg on 20 February and secured an amazing result. It went downhill to begin with as we were 2–0 down inside thirty-three minutes, but then sheer scenes occurred. We scored four unanswered goals, the last three coming after 75mins to secure a crazy 2–4 win at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Sensational comeback!

Sadly, we totally bottled the second leg. Villarreal came to our place and didn't mess around, winning 0–3 to advance 4–5 on aggregate. Gutting, absolutely gutting. I expected to lose this tie, but to go out after getting a stunning first leg win hurts. Nothing I could do about the second leg, Villarreal stopped us in every department. Frustrating, but proud of that first leg! Our European exit means we can now turn full focus to the Premier Division campaign. Three straight wins followed over Amkar, Volgar (my 200th match with Krylia) and SKA Khabarovsk; two goals were scored in each of the three.

We beat Amkar 2–0, Nicolás Arias and Anton Yatsuk scoring. Goals from Gábor Gulyás and Arias helped us beat bottom of the table Volgar 1–2, while Yegor Yefimov and Gulyás netted to beat SKA Khabarovsk 2–1. Those results leave us 3rd, just one point off 2nd. A four point gap has opened up to 5th, but big fixtures are to come vs. CSKA Moscow (5th), Ufa (4th), Zenit (2nd), Krasnodar (1st) and Dynamo Moscow (6th) in the final two months. Krasnodar have flown ahead yet again, so the best we can hope for is a third consecutive second place finish. Awards and squad statistics are below.

Just two transfers happened during the mid-season window, one in and one out. Yulian Stoyanov joins on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, just a bit of cover as second-choice 'keeper Ricardo Palacios has had a few injuries and our third-choice is a pretty average youngster in Dmitry Abdurakhmanov. The out is Fábio Fonseca, who has returned to his homeland of Portugal on loan to sign for Arouca. Decent player, but hasn't found a spot in my team and is regularly unused. Out on loan, but still has a year left on contract so may give him another chance next campaign.

2047 - November and December:
2047 reaches its climax. I and Krylia Sovetov came into November and December hoping to improve league form, but also qualify for the UEFA Europa League knockout stages.

Lokomotiv Moscow gave us our first test at the RZD Arena, they beat us with fair ease 2–0. Our response was to host Rijeka on Matchday 4 of the Europa League and win 3–0, scoring all three goals inside twenty-two first half minutes; Maxim Kovalev bagged two while Gordan Cvitanovic also scored. Just like on Matchday 3, Standard Liège and Viktoria Plzeň drew their fixture meaning we were four points clear with six to play for; we'd qualify if Standard failed to beat us next time out. Dynamo Moscow were up next in the league, Nicolás Arias and Dusko Becelic secured us victory. Arias then scored four goals in a 1–6 friendly win vs. Zenit-Izhevsk.

We faced league leaders Krasnodar on 23 November, subsequently played very well but it wasn't enough as they won after a Mirko Plantak goal on 10mins. Then we faced Standard at home in the Europa League, knowing we'd qualify as group winners if we avoided defeat. We did more than that as we won 2–1, that man Arias getting on the scoresheet again to join defender Joseph Davies. Group G winners, with a match to spare! It was a favourable draw, and we took full advantage. Delighted to get through, but an extremely tough knockout round fixture is to come: Villarreal, of La Liga Santander. Tricky! A run of three straight Premier Division wins followed.

Two homes wins came versus Anzhi Makhachkala (2–0) and Fakel Voronezh (1–0), with an away win in Kazan against rivals Rubin (0–2). Five goals scored, none conceded. A much needed winning patch in the league as we were beginning to fall behind. Robin Westlin was the star of those three matches, the Swedish striker netted a goal in each of the three. An extremely underrated player of mine, I signed him from Royal Antwerp in July 2043; firstly on loan before signing him for £675k. He has 20 goals in 68 apps, despite only starting 39 times; so effectively 20 goals for 39 starts - that's very impressive. He has had long spells without featuring at all, yet has never, ever, moaned; even with interest from elsewhere. Top guy!

Our final Europa League Group G match was away in Czechia versus Plzeň. It was a deadrubber for us due us already through as group winners, I still fielded my strongest team to be fair to Standard who were fighting Plzeň for second place. Despite that, we lost 3–2. Plzeň were excellent and were well up for it, deservedly beat us. That's all the action for November and December 2047. We sit 6th in the league, but are now just four points off our expectation and end position of the last two seasons of 2nd. We're still in Europe, but with Villarreal to come that may not be the case in a few months - but time will tell. Awards and squad stats are below.

Newly-promoted Volgar were our first match of September 2047, Alexandr Fedoseev scored a penalty to secure victory on home turf. Then came a friendly win over Greek club Xanthi. League action returned with a home win over CSKA Moscow, Vyacheslav Biryukov secured all three points. Back-to-back defeats followed, firstly in our Europa League Group G opener against Standard Liège (1–0) and secondly in a league hosting of Ufa (0–2). Short solace was found in the Russian Cup fifth round, where we beat second tier Dynamo Saint Petersburg 0–2 on the road thanks to Robin Westlin and Maxim Kovalev.

Two days later saw a visit to Kuban where we played out a goalless draw. Matchday 2 in the Europa League had us playing Viktoria Plzeň at home, we won the match after bossing the contest throughout but only won thanks to a goal from defender Walter Enciso. In the Premier Division, Rostov were our next opponents. They sold their star man and menace of mine Alexander Petrov in the off-season to Saint-Étienne, so I thought we had a chance - but no, they remained mine and Krylia's bogey side as they won by two goals at the Samara Arena. Kazakh side Akzhayik gave us a friendly in the October international break, we won 2–0.

We stretched our winless streak in the league to four matches by drawing 1–1 in Novosibirsk versus Sibir, Fedoseev gave us a good start on 10mins but Sibir levelled with twenty minutes left via Alexandr Semenov. That's frustrating, but we are going well in the Europa League as we secured back-to-back wins on Matchday 3 with a come-from-behind win in Croatia against Rijeka. Colombian Diego Potes gave them a lead, but goals from Anton Yatsuk and Nicolás Arias (x2) sent us to victory in Southeast Europe. That puts us top of Group G as Standard and Plzeň drew. That seemed to give us a huge confidence boost as we then ended our winless league run in absolute style by beating league leaders Zenit 3–0!

In a sensational performance, for-which six of the players got in the Team of the Week, we took the lead on 34mins via Yatsuk, Biryukov added to the tally on 64mins before Arias completed the rout seven minutes from full-time. Amazing performance from the boys. These very busy two months ended with a Russian Cup sixth round tie in Tomsk vs. Tom, I played a heavily rotated eleven with two youngsters and that showed as we lost 3–2. We had led 1–2 on 80mins, so an annoying loss - against a team managed by Vasily Sidorov, a hero I managed during my days with Mordovia.

To recap the season so far: 8th in the league, but three points away from 5th. Out of the UEFA Champions League, but top of our Europa League group with three games to play. Out of the Russian Cup and lost the Super Cup. Highs and lows, need to improve the league form but would love a run in Europe. Lastly, awards and squad stats are below.

Khimki – Where Are They Now? – Ten Years Later:
Taking a look back at my second Russian job - Khimki - who I managed between 2034 and 2037.

My Record:
2034/35 - 13/20 | PLD38 | W10 | D18 | L10 | GF39 | GA42 | GD-3 | PTS48
2035/36 - 7/20 | PLD38 | W15 | D12 | L11 | GF54 | GA47 | GD+7 | PTS57
2036/37 - 9/20 | PLD38 | W14 | D12 | L12 | GF47 | GA43 | GD+4 | PTS54
2037/38 - 14/20 | PLD38 | W12 | D7 | L19 | GF31 | GA48 | GD-17 | PTS43
Joined: November 2034 | Sacked: October 2037
Trophies: 0 ( – )

After leaving Belgium U21s, I made a return to Russia to join Khimki of the First Division (tier two). They were a solid First Division club, that had over-performed inside the top five in the five seasons before the season I came. A nice, settled team that wasn't expecting promotion but were capable of improving year-on-year; unlike Dynamo Bryansk four years previous. I joined in November 2034, around the midway point just before the winter break. I guided them to a 13th place finish, not spectacular but the board wanted a mid-table finish and that's what I gave them. Season 2 went well, we went and finished seventh and were only eight points off the play-offs.

Season 3 was much of the same, we placed two places lower in ninth but only adrift of the play-offs by nine points. We played well and I was confident heading into my fourth Khimki campaign. That pre-season confidence soon disappeared as everything seemed to shut down, nothing was working tactically and the players seemed to forget how to play football. We sat in the relegation zone on 24 October 2037 and the board subsequently sacked me. Don't get me wrong, based on that season it was merited as we were shocking but perspective was needed.

In the past two seasons, we missed the play-offs by not that much of a distance really for a club like Khimki, yet half-a-season of badness was enough to sack me. I must admit I felt a little aggrieved by that sacking, as I was really enjoying my time with Khimki. Although, looking back, it was probably the perfect thing to happen given I went onto join Mordovia very shortly after, a team more expectant and more built for top-flight football - which I got for them. Football's a funny old game!

Their Record Since:
2038/39 - 14/20 | PLD38 | W10 | D11 | L17 | GF35 | GA53 | GD-18 | PTS41
2039/40 - 5/20 | PLD38 | W19 | D6 | L13 | GF45 | GA45 | GD0 | PTS63
2040/41 - 8/20 | PLD38 | W17 | D8 | L13 | GF67 | GA55 | GD+12 | PTS59
2041/42 - 5/20 | PLD38 | W17 | D10 | L11 | GF59 | GA49 | GD+10 | PTS61
2042/43 - 10/20 | PLD38 | W15 | D10 | L13 | GF52 | GA43 | GD+9 | PTS55
2043/44 - 5/20 | PLD38 | W16 | D8 | L14 | GF49 | GA46 | GD+3 | PTS56
2044/45 - 5/20 | PLD38 | W15 | D11 | L12 | GF48 | GA46 | GD+2 | PTS56
2045/46 - 7/20 | PLD38 | W16 | D12 | L10 | GF52 | GA36 | GD+16 | PTS60
2046/47 - 14/20 | PLD38 | W12 | D10 | L16 | GF39 | GA50 | GD-11 | PTS46
Period: July 2038 to October 2047
Trophies: 0 ( – )

As you can see, not much has really changed. They've had some very good seasons, while have some not so good seasons. It seems they are what they were before I arrived, a team about right for the First Division while generally being too good for a relegation scrap but not quite good enough for the Premier Division. In the following season after I was sacked, they actually only survived relegation by one point! Very close. On the flip side, in the next one after that they missed the promotion play-offs by only five points. The season after that was a mid-table season, while the following they missed the play-offs by two points.

The next three campaigns they were pretty far off the play-offs, but in 2045/46 they missed them by just three points. In the most recent full season, they were back where they were ten years previous - 14th, missing the drop again by one singular point. In the current season of 2047/48, they are 3rd at the moment and five points off top. Could this be their year? So, after ten years they've experienced a lot without much actually happening, they could've quite easily been promoted with some luck in a few seasons but very easily could've got relegated too. Very interesting.

Nothing to share from around the league, due to the fact I've manged in it ever since. One notable thing was that Spartak Moscow are no longer playable in the game as they're amazingly in the Third Division. As I've mentioned before, I plan to leave Krylia Sovetov and Russian football all together in 2050 at the end of my current contract, however if Spartak did become playable at that time then I may take them over and try to rebuild the team that won last season's Premier Division (2016–17) in real life. That would be very intriguing, but we'll see.

2047 - July and August:
After reaching 1000 matches at the end of last season and signing a new contract with Krylia Sovetov through to 2050, I head into my fifth season with the Russian club!

Five friendlies got us prepared for the season ahead. Trips to Hungary (Balmazújvárosi), Poland (GKS Tychy), Austria (Sturm Graz) and Germany (RB Leipzig) came before a home meeting with Southampton of England, winning the first three but losing to higher oppo in Leipzig and Southampton. 27 July saw us meet league and cup champions Krasnodar in the Super Cup for the third season running, and just like the past two years they won it ahead of us; we took another step closer, only losing on penalties this time - should've won it.

Then came the start of the UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign, we were drawn to face Panathinaikos of Greece. A year ago we played OIympiacos in the same qualifying round, this time we faced the other Eternal Derby participant. Olympiacos were defeated last season, but Panathinaikos got the better of us this season after they advanced 1–2 on aggregate. A dreadful first leg in Athens (2–0 L) cost us dearly, we won the second leg via a Gábor Gulyás goal. Extremely disappointing, especially after reaching the group stages last season. It's not all bad news though, as we dropped into the UEFA Europa League; but still faced another double qualifier.

Sandwiched between the Champions League disappointment was our league opener against Fakel Voronezh, our mood wasn't improved as the eleventh place team from last season held us to a one-one draw. A week later we played Matchday 2 with a match with big derby rivals Rubin Kazan. We were superb, going two goals ahead inside fifth minutes thanks to goals from Didier Sylla and Nicolás Arias. Much needed lift for all involved from our point of view. We may have lost next time out, a 2–1 loss in Perm vs. Amkar, but we then went and won our next three; including both of our Europa League qualifiers. For the Europa League play-off round, Israeli Premier League side Bnei Yehuda were our opposition.

I was confident and rightly so as we went onto progress 5–0 on aggregate, a 0–2 win in the Middle East was coupled with a 3–0 home win. Arias and new signing Alexandr Fedoseev got goals in leg one, while Gulyás stole the show on home soil with a quite brilliant hat-trick. That means we are in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the second time in four seasons, we've been given a much friendlier group than three seasons ago - we had Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United in 2044, this year we will face: Standard Liège, Viktoria Plzeň and Rijeka. Like before, we had a league match in-between the European commitments; we beat 100%er losers SKA Khabarovsk 0–1.

In the league we sit 7th, but have a game in hand which if we win we'd go joint 3rd. We have to keep winning as Zenit and Krasnodar have begun very well. Elsewhere, the Russian Cup, which we won in 2045, will start with an away trip to second tier Dynamo Saint Petersburg. You can see the awards and squad statistics below.

Lastly, the transfers! Ibrahima Ndiour, a right-back from Concordia Chiajna, came in for £900k. Alexandr Fedoseev, a central midfielder from Dynamo Moscow, signed for £4.3m. Dusko Becelic, a left-back from Cluj, joined for £1m. Ricardo Palacios, a goalkeeper from Gimnasia y Esgrima, came on a free. Vyacheslav Biryukov, a central attacking midfielder, joined for £3.9m. Some costly acquisitions (£10m), too early to tell if it is money well spent or not. £4.9m came in after the departures of Gerard Torres (Norwich City, £2.5m), Samuel Afari (Udinese, £1m), Konrad Görlitz (Werder Bremen, £84k), Philip Awaziem (Sparta Prague, £675k) and Samuel Sulley (Legia Warsaw, £600k). Ruslan Nazarov and Kim Yoon-Ho were other notable outgoings.

2047 - April and May:
After cup exit frustration dominated the headlines in February and March, we close the league season in April and May as we search for a second consecutive second place finish and subsequent UEFA Champions League football. I also reach a significant match milestone.

Excellent end of the 2046–47 season with Krylia Sovetov! We have secured a second place finish and secured UEFA Champions League for the second year running, a nice achievement. Despite being on absolutely fire at some points during this spell, winning eight of the ten matches, we only got 2nd on the last day and that was thanks to help from elsewhere. As always seems to be the case, when we were winning the AI (Rostov and CSKA Moscow) just kept winning and winning too. It was left to the final day, but delighted to get UCL football again.

April 2047 began with a massive win over Champions League rivals CSKA Moscow. Maxim Kovalev netted a quality hat-trick to give us all three points at home. That triumph was completely undone just a week later though as we lost to second bottom Dynamo Saint Petersburg on the road - Nikita Klyuev giving them the win. Dire result. We recovered with back-to-back victories over Ufa and Anzhi Makhachkala, two sides who at the time were fighting for the UEFA Europa League places. The wins were 1–2 and 1–0, three different strikers scoring in Gábor Gulyás, Kovalev and Konrad Görlitz.

Then came yet another big match: Rostov, at the Samara Arena. We could've made the race for CL a lot easier on ourselves if we won this, but we didn't due to an Alexandr Petrov goal just before the interval - my former player at Mordovia is killing me, that's his sixth goal in as many matches versus us. That was our final defeat of the season though. We won our next five fixtures! Gulyás hit a big purple patch with five goals in four different matches. He got the winner on 4 May against Lokomotiv Moscow (0–1W), he then scored the first goal in a two-goal win over Armavir (0–2W), prior to scoring vs. Sibir (3–0W). He made it four from four on 22 May with two goals against Dynamo Moscow (3–0W). Those four straight wins were huge, but we were still sat 4th going into the last day.

On the final day, the top four faced each other. Runaway champions Krasnodar hosted us, while Rostov and CSKA faced off. The scenario was 'simple': We had to win, while we needed CSKA to lose - a draw or CSKA win wouldn't have been enough no matter our result. We had an extremely difficult task against Krasnodar, who won the league at a canter once again. Miraculously, we got a 1–3 victory in Krasnodar over our hosts. Sensational performance from the lads, just when it was needed! Walter Enciso, Yegor Yefimov and Nicolás Arias scored. Thankfully, that win wasn't for nothing as Rostov beat CSKA! Against all the odds, we place second!

That match versus Armavir was in-fact my 1,000th match in management! Wow, didn't think I'd reach this far in the save when I started it. Loads more to come hopefully, here's to another 1,000 games! Prior to the penultimate matchday, I signed a new three-year contract with Krylia Sovetov! It was a no brainer, I'm enjoying my time in Samara and feel we are improving year-by-year in different ways. At this moment in time, I reckon I'll move on in 2050 (end of new contract) if I haven't been poached/sacked etc. by then. That isn't set in stone, though.

2047 - February and March:
Coming off a fantastic November and December with Krylia Sovetov, during which we managed to secure a third place finish in our tough UEFA Champions League group and therefore got into the UEFA Europa League. The Russian Cup reaches its quarter-final stage. We had a little bit of catching up to do with second place CSKA Moscow in the league, though; if we want UCL football for next season.

Europa League and Russian Cup elimination. Very disappointing! There have only been six competitive fixtures so far in 2047, but there has been a whole host of frustration. We have risen a place in the league and closed the gap ever so slightly on CSKA, but our cup exits were bitterly dissatisfying. Of those six matches, we only won once - although it was a big one to win.

Once again, our friendly form was outstanding - shame you don't get anything for them! Wins over Russian sides Druzhba Arzamas and Kalitva opened the schedule, prior to wins in Lithuania and Czechia to Stumbras and Hradec Králové and at home to Sparta Prague and Dinamo Zagreb. New signing Gábor Gulyás starting his Krylia career with six goals in three games against decent opposition. Another friendly rounded off these two months, it involved a trip to England to face Derby County at Pride Park - we won with ease over the Sky Bet Championship club.

Massive fixtures got us back to competitive action, the two-legged tie in the Europa League over PSV as well as the cup quarter-final versus CSKA. We hosted PSV for the first leg and performed very well, the aforementioned Gulyás scoring twice on his proper debut. Unfortunately, PSV grabbed a very late (87) away-goal via Bernard Yao. We were in control, but it was one of those matches where you just knew they would score. The second leg a week later was a dull affair, they got a goal to advance on away-goals. Feel slightly hard done by, we dominated the first leg and the second should've ended drawn due to bad performances by both. Three days later we faced CSKA in the cup, no complaints here as we were dreadful.

The fixture list didn't get any easier with a trip to Zenit next. They're started the season woefully, down in the relegation zone for the majority but have since improved and sit mid-table. They still played like a top three club and bossed us, we somehow scraped a point. Likewise a week later at home to Amkar, another side surprisingly struggling. Almost a carbon copy match in truth. Thankfully, we won our final competitive match of this period in the big derby against Rubin Kazan. Gulyás scoring a brace. Interesting fact about Gulyás: In all his matches so far, he has scored in four - all four times, he scored two goals. A man of scoring spurts, it seems.

To recap: 3rd in the Premier League, just four points off the coveted Champions League spot of 2nd. Out of all the cups, so league takes priority for the last three months. I'd love a UCL place, but I'm simply aiming for a top four finish and subsequent UEL football - that would be an achievement, considering this season hasn't been all that good. One record, one award and one set of squad stats are below.

Transfers: Two arrive. That man Gábor Gulyás, a £6.25m signing from Fulham where he scored 23 goals in 34 matches in the Championship. Costly signing, but as mentioned in the last post we had a fair bit to spend so I decided to splurge on a striker. He has been a little inconsistent so far, but when he has turned up he has looked top, top quality. The other in was Ludvik Novotny, a centre-back on loan from Torino of Serie A. Needed a fresh CB option, has looked OK so far. Four have departed: Yaroslav Romanov (Loan, CB, Khaleej). Mikhail Kozlov (£92k, CM, Astra Giurgiu). Andrey Dolgov (Loan, CB, Al-Wehda). Branislav Kovacevic (LW, £89k, Qadsiah). Romanov and Dolgov are young centre-backs, I wanted to keep Romanov as back-up but he wanted out; hence Novotny signing. Kozlov and Kovacevic were both unwanted, contracts were expiring so good to get fees for both.
