Unfortunately there's no real way to start in the 2025 season because we are working on an outdated game currently.

The team that San Diego replaced was Chivas USA which is an extinct former MLS team.

I added another team and put Chivas USA's data on that team so any former players or staff from Chivas USA will still have it in their bio and league history.

Using a pre-existing MLS team is important when creating an expansion side because the MLS rules and draft system can glitch out when you create a team from scratch.

Chivas USA as a former MLS team still have league specific drafts and GAM and TAM although for the first transfer window San Diego will start off with 0 GAM and TAM.

It's glitched out so that you can't change it in the editor but if you play the game you'll be awarded it TAM and GAM as normal throughout the season or through trades.

What I suggest to do when you start up your save is to immediately trade your draft picks for international slots even if they are just for 1 season since otherwise it is not possible to fit the existing roster in the squad.

Also congrats on San Diego's success! Through making this project I've become a fan of the team.

Hi Mike,

Would you be able to post some screenshots of where you have put the files in your directory?

On startup of your game you should select both 000_San Diego FC (MLS Start) - This is the file that adds San Diego to the game and 002_sortitoutsi.net FM24 Data Update (San Diego Transfers) - This file is the sortitoutsi transfer update but it has been modified so that San Diego's player are not released

If you do not select 000_San Diego FC (MLS Start) on startup no team for San Diego will show up but both of these files are necessary to use.

Are there any other issues?

Since San Diego has been created by overwriting Chivas sometimes on start up it will initially revert back to that name.

The solution to this is to save the game and your file -→ shut down FM -→ Restart FM -→ Re-enter your save file

The name usually changes back to San Diego FC

Just finished a version for the Netherlands and posted it to the tutorial.

Feel free to make your own versions or utilize the ones I have made here.

You can also copy the steps here and apply them to lower league mods if you would like to do this with leagues that do not exist in FM or for tiers outside the scope of the vanilla game.

No Foreign Signings Transfer Policy

After releasing my No Foreign Signings databases for England and France I've been contacted numerous times by people who would like to make their own version of a file like this that restricts foreign signings.

Since this idea was quite popular I wanted to create a breakdown of how exactly to implement this transfer policy and if people would like to create a version for different leagues around the world we can collectively list them here in this thread.

Around November I was working on creating a version of different leagues with the no foreign signing rules implemented but wasn't able to complete all the leagues.

(Different from my initial versions of the NFP (No Foreign Player) databases for England and France, these files just adjust league rules and don't remove players from teams)

Tutorial - No Foreign Players Signing Policy

Step 1: Add Nation Rules

Step 2: Select "Add Lower Divisions and Cups to Existing Structure" and choose a nation from the “Current Nations” tab

Step 3: Convert the rules of the selected nation from Basic to “Advanced Rules”

Step 4: Locate the “Fixture Rules” tab

Step 5: Add these these 4 rules to the “Squad Selection” rules of the first division of the nation you have chosen and set all of them a value of 0

Step 6: Repeat this for all leagues and cups within the “Fixture Rules” tab (for cups only “Match squad” and "Playing 11" rules are needed since there will be no squad registration)

Step 7: Locate -→ "Transfers" tab and then -→ "Transfer Rules" tab within it. 

             -→ Find "Competition Rules" -→Add the first division of the nation -→ Change the rule to “Cannot Sign Foreign Staff”

Step 8:  Repeat this for the rest of the lower leagues or at least the active leagues in the game

Step 9 (Optional): Within the Transfer Rules tab -→  locate “Mandatory Minimum Release Fees” -→Add a Minimum Release Fee and set it to “Domestic Clubs Only”. -→ Change the fee from 0 to -1 (this makes the game create minimum release fees in the contracts of all domestic players)

--This Step is optional but without it you will see the price of all domestic players rise significantly to the point it gets difficult to buy them without astronomical fees

Step 10:  Save the File (My naming convention is NFP_Lite with the name of the nation) -→  Then Test the Rules

Step 11: Save the File after it is verified (the most important part)

Note: Any nations within the “Nations Treated As Non Foreign” tab (located in “relationships” tab) of the nation you have used will still be able to be signed.

if you don't want any nations to be treated as non foreign you can remove all nations from here and the treated as EU section.

Since there are so many clubs, people, competition additions, etc I think it would be difficult to merge the two databases.

Currently I'm using Chivas USA for San Diego FC but there's a lot more additions I've made than just that.

I think the way that would probably work the best would be to copy the rules from your database and paste them on mine then replace the competitions that reference things with the wrong UID.

If you have any other ideas feel free to suggest them.

My next iteration of this project will most likely be an expansion for the USA where I use @themodelcitizen's lower league database and attempt to expand it with NCAA teams I have added to the database. (D1,D2, & D3)

This probably means that I will title the next update as something else that isn't so San Diego specific but it will still be based off the same database.

For the NCAA D1 teams I'd like to add players to the teams from the biggest conferences or as many as I can. 

Currently I'm still adding college teams.

If anyone would like to recommend additions feel free to suggest something.

I'm not aware of the big college rivalries so if people could recommend the established derbies I could add then that would be helpful.

Logos are pretty simple to add since all the colleges have nice png's of their logo on their wikipedia page.

When adding players, their ages aren't listed publicly, unless they have a transfermarkt which is a little rare, so I have to make a guess based on their school year.

So far only San Diego Toreros, San Diego Aztecs, San Diego Tritons and Vermont Catamounts (current NCAA champions) have teams based on their school roster pages which I'm satisfied with but making a full league with actual players would be kind of cool so adding more players is something I'd like to work on.

With the addition of the NCAA College teams as playable leagues it would actually be possible to make the MLS draft exclusively populated by college athletes instead of the USL 2 team's players in the standard version.

Obviously this adds a level of realism to the game.

As a stand in for the years MLS players played their college football the vanilla database uses a team called “US Colleges” and for as many players as I can I've replaced this with their actual college team.

Kits aren't my strongest point and I've only been able to make the initial ones using https://fmkitcreator.com/ although admittedly the 2d kits don't look the best.

I really don't rate Ema Boateng.

Mikey Varas keeps bringing him on as a sub to impact games but I can't see what he offers that Alex Mighten wouldn't do better.

Maybe because he's already an established name in MLS he gets more playing time but he's nothing special and honestly looks like he's not even the age he claims.

I don't know why I'm the first person to notice this but Jasper Loffelsend is definitely not 1.8m like he is reported to be and is currently in FM.

Wikipedia has him at 1.7m which feels more accurate as on the field he looks small and is pushed around a lot.

Honestly it's quite impressive how well San Diego have been able to implement a style of play in only 7 weeks of training.

I saw the St. Louis and Real Salt Lake games live on apple tv and it's fun to watch them play.

I see a lot of similarities with how Norwich City play under Johanes Hoff Thorup who also coached at Nordsjaelland where they originated this RTD philosophy.

It's very fast tempo, direct, possession heavy and risky.

For Norwich it took a few games into the season until they found their rhythm but when they did it was really incredible especially with Borja Sainz inform.

The main risks of this style are that it is very demanding and players get injured. After Norwich lost a few players they lost consistency.

It also leads to a lot of errors as players learn the system.

I can see that with San Diego already but they are not being punished for it yet.

Jeppe Tverskov is an amazing player to watch for them. Really assured and composed player.

Yes that's the correct file.

It is just the update file from sortioutsi but adjusted to keep San Diego players at San Diego.

I've made a more recent version of it today that has a few more recent transfers.

The thing with the MLS transfers is that there's so many league specific rules for contracts that it's easy to make mistakes when moving players so I've given the current MLS DPs their correct contract status.

I have added 29,000 cities to the USA in the FM database from a census data database found online.

I'll post it here so it can be used as a resource for anyone who wants to use it.

I'm going to merge this file with my San Diego update so it won't be needed to merge with later versions of this update.

In regards to skins, I don't know what the best choice for anything other than laptop would be right now because that's all I have available to me for the moment.

I use the Zealand skin because it looks best to me on laptop but if you have a PC there are others that look better since there's more screen available.

It's about personal preference so whatever looks best to you.

My preference is usually for a skin that has the stadium and the city showing for clubs.

San Diego FC have acquired defender Luca Bombino on loan from LAFC, the clubs announced Tuesday.

The 18-year-old LAFC homegrown's deal last through the 2025 MLS season and includes a permanent transfer option.

I eventually figured out how to do MLS draft pick numbers correctly.

I assumed to do the 1st pick of the 1st round you would select MLS last draft round as 1 and MLS last draft pick as 1 with the MLS draft type as superdraft along with the year but this actually would make the player be the 2nd pick of the 2nd round because the number selection starts at 0 with the unticked selection being the equivalent of 1.

If you want it to be the 1st pick of the 1st round you just leave “last draft year” and “last draft round” unticked and make the draft type superdraft with the draft year the year you want.

Last draft = 1 would be the equivalent of 2 so you need to take that into consideration when entering the number.

Last draft pick = 1 is also the equivalent of 2 so any a draft pick number you are entering you will need to minus 1 to it.

If anyone catches any errors in the latest update please use this thread to inform me.

San Diego FC (SDFC) today announced the signing of Ghanaian defender Willy Kumado from Danish Superliga club Lyngby Boldklub on a two-year contract through the 2026 MLS season, with Club options for 2027 and 2028. Kumado will occupy an International Roster Slot and will be added to the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.

I'm getting pretty close to completing my San Diego update and general MLS update.

The update will include:

• 500+ new players
• All MLS 2025 Superdraft players added
• A LOT of US Youth Prospects added
• Added a few missing high potential youth players (e.g. Juma Bah)
• MLS players updated PA and CA (based on 2024 season and market value changes on transfermarkt)
• USMNT player's given CA boost based on performance
• Some high performing players for the 2024/25 season have been given a CA boost
• Player faces added
• Club graphics added
• MLS league reputation boost (source)
• Paul Pogba added back into FM
• New clubs (mainly academy clubs)

Currently there's 100 players I need to add details to after I've already added their names to the database with a script.

I've had the flu really bad the past couple of days so I've been putting off working on the database.

I could release the file as it is currently but the faces will take a bit longer to add although wouldn't require a change to any existing save game.

I asked Chatgpt to give me suggestions for names of local California derbies for San Diego FC.

If anybody has any better recommendations of what to call them just let me know.

Another issue that I am frustrated that I can't resolve but just have to accept is that for the club history records for San Diego FC they've still got the league record appearance maker as Dan Kennedy and record goalscorer as Ante Razov both formerly of Chivas.

I've tried everything to fix it so the records show up as blank but it doesn't seem to work. It must be a hardcoded thing.

It doesn't cause any issue besides being annoying but their records aren't that high so it shouldn't take that long for you to break their records with existing San Diego players.

The only issues I've had reported back to me is the actual name of the club reverting back to Chivas USA and the logo not working.

The name issue is an easy fix where you just need to save the game and switch off FM then load back into the save then it should be fixed.

With the logo the issue can arise if you have got another logopack that is overriding the one included with this download.

A fix for that is that you can find the UID for San Diego FC/Chivas USA (980542) in your logos config,xml file and comment out the line of code referencing UID 980542.

I'm about to release a big update to the file that will include the entire 2025 draft class added to the MLS squads and a bunch of missing players that haven't been added to the game yet, mainly youth prospects for the US.

Pogba is removed from FM24 so I added him back to the game too because it's been discussed that he'll return to football in the MLS when he comes back from his ban in March.

I've also adjusted the CA for players that performed well in the MLS in 2024.

I still need to add details and graphics for a few players so it might be a few days until I'm finished with the latest update.

That should be the correct path.

If you save your game, shut down FM completely and then open FM once more and re-enter the save file the name should be changed.

Usually this fix works.

Ok they actually did sign him. The whole “right of first refusal thing” had me confused.

San Diego FC (SDFC) announced today the Club has acquired $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM) from LAFC in exchange for the Right of First Refusal for winger Yaw Yeboah.

Yeboah, 27, was originally selected by SDFC in Stage 2 of the 2024 MLS Re-Entry Draft in December.

Transaction: SDFC acquires $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM) from LAFC in exchange for the Right of First Refusal for Yaw Yeboah.

(Whatever any of that means)

San Diego replaces Chivas USA.

If you load up your game you'll find it in the Western Conference making it the 30th team in the MLS.

It is easier to use Chivas rather than creating a new team in the database because the MLS is a bit glitchy in FM so when you create a new team from scratch it doesn't get allocated draft picks and allocation money etc.

Even with using Chivas USA the first transfer window doesn't get allocated any MLS specific TAM or GAM money but after the 2nd transfer window you get it.
