Joking apart, there's nothing at all wrong with your cut, but when the quality is similar, I guess it's best to go with the more recent cut…

It was an honor just to be in contention. :--)

@LFCYNWA and @ssllmmccn, could you tell me which is the more recent of the two so I add it?

Mine's from June 2020, so I guess I lose….

@LFCYNWA, good work but remember to check the cut dimensions before uploading 😉

No worries, I'll take care of this one 🙂

@LFCYNWA what should I do to convince you to start making cuts of this quality as 180x180,damn it?!

@Baja Respectfully, I think we have differing opinions of this particular cut. Per previous advice, I now submit 180x180 whenever I feel the cut warrants it, and in this case, I didn't.

I don't think this is the picture of a 63-year old physio….

You bet. As you can see, it's that stupid blue border that's the problem.

@LFCYNWA This source would make a better quality cutout 🙂
100% agree!

Funnily enough I did do that--guess I didn't shorten the dude's neck enough! :-)

Some comments @LFCYNWA. It's better if you leave even less space above the head. Moreover, this cut is tilted slightly to the right and the source should be rotated (probably around 3-4 degrees anti-clockwise, I would think) before being cropped. As you can see, the colouring of the cut isn't very realistic. I know you sometimes have to work with the source you have but in this particular case, using auto-contrast and adding the yellow in the color balance menu helps to make it look a bit better 😉

Heck, it looks a LOT better now. Thank you again for the tips!

I'd just finished fixing your previous one, as it happens! In general, faces looking straight at the camera are preferable 👍

That's cool--looks good!

@LFCYNWA you should really visit this thread before making more cuts.Don't forget to check all your cuts on dark background before upload, since this one for example have a white outline all the way around.

Yes, I can see that now--sorry!

@LFCYNWA Your cuts would be much better if you rotate it. Use this guide or the one below it

Generally, I do try to rotate to get the face completely vertical. Guess I missed it for this one!

@LFCYNWA, good work but you should only leave 2-3 pixels above the head and below the chin. Anything more is unnecessary because we want the face to be the focus of the cut-out. Additionally, all cuts must have a collar. If like in this case, the collar is quite low or the neck is quite long and to include it would mean you have more than 2-3 pixels beneath the chin, then there is a very simple technique demonstrated in the tutorial thread which allows this. Essentially, you lasso the collar and nudge it upwards 😉

P.S. Instead of uploading multiple cut-outs one-by-one, it's much quicker and efficient to upload them as a mixpack which sees them automatically assigned in the respective person's timeline anyway. You'd also save me time having to download them manually to add them to the megapack 🙂

Understood on all counts (the pixels rule, the collar & mixpacks). I can see that mixpacks would be easier to handle on your-all's end; I just don't know how to submit cutouts that way. (I also sometimes don't know when I'm going down the rabbit hole of searching for faces, whether I'm going to get one guy or the whole team!) 🙂

@LFCYNWA, good attempt at this source.

Allow me to give you some pointers, however 😉

a) In sources where the image is tilted to one side, it looks much better in-game if the cut-out is upright as possible. So rotating the image before cropping it, in this source by perhaps 6-8 degrees clockwise would help a lot.
b) You seem to be aware of our rule to have only 2-3 pixels beneath the chin. Just so you're aware, we make an exception in cases like this where the hairstyle is a bit large. In these cases, we aim to have as much of the width of the hair included as possible. Since this may mean that the distance between is a bit bigger than the ideal distance of 2-3 pixels, we then try to have a little bit of space above the hair and the same amount beneath the chin
c) I know you only recently start cutting but I'm afraid the fine hair details aren't very clear. What program and technique are you using? Have you had a look at the guidelines to cutting thread? Putting the source from the above link to remove.bg gives a great cut with loads of hair detail and very little work required. All you'd need to do is rotate it, crop it and resize it. And in the case of this particular source, some judicious stamp of the clone stamp tool to recreate the missing bit at the top of the hair. I'll provide a cut of this guy when I get home from work later today to see what I mean. With remove.bg doing all the hard work for you, you can spend less time to improve better cuts, so well worth considering its use, which is most importantly free 😉

GREAT tips, especially about remove.bg! (I've been using paint.net all this time, and I'm trying NOT to calculate all the hours wasted scooting my mouse along a pixel a second.)

I appreciate your work @LFCYNWA but please try to avoid side images like this one. I understand sources may not be widely available for the more obscure players, but we aim to have front-looking faces in the megapack whenever possible 🙂

Thanks for the guidance, @mons! (You could call it the Picasso rule: if you can't see both eyes, don't submit the pic.) 😉
