Bury: Nicholas Bignall & Bryan Hughes join

Bury have signed free agents Nicholas Bignall and Bryan Hughes.

Young striker Bignall, 22, was released by Reading in May after five seasons with the Royals and has agreed a two-year deal at Gigg Lane.

Veteran Hughes, 36, who can play either in central midfield or as a defensive midfielder, also joins on a two-year contract after being released by Bury's League Two rivals Accrington in the summer.

Bignall and Hughes are the seventh and eighth new arrivals since new chairman Stewart Day completed his takeover of the League Two club after the club released 16 players in may amid relegation and financial difficulty.

Before his spell at Accrington, Hughes had spent a season at Icelandic club IBV and also had three years at Charlton Athletic.

The Shakers are due to start their pre-season training camp soon in the North-West of England.

Stan Ternent gives his thoughts on the new faces

‘Craig Barr had three or four offers to go somewhere else. He played 35 times for Livingston in the Scottish Division One last year, and I felt that with the massive influx of new players we needed to mae sure that we build a strong defense. Players that can handle the pressure and players that are still young so can improve knowledge of the game to get better, and that’s why Craig is here.

He’s a terrific lad and to be fair, I’m not surprised there was a number of teams after him. He is a player that optimises the word determination. I spoke to quite a few people at Livingston and they were sick to see him leave.

He will do exactly what is on the tin, and bring strength to the squad. He’s a very good centre half who can also play right back. Because of all the changes here, we need players in that can cover more than one area where possible.

Neil McGregor was on his way to Carlisle and we got in there just in time. He is a player that we have been tracking and he has a good defensive record. We know that was our Achilles heel last season. We need to make sure we aren't leaking silly goals in this team. He’s proven First Division level in Scotland. Which is pretty comparable to the level that we will be competing at next season.

Joe Whight is a young left back and he’s a versatile lad. He’s got great natural fitness and his final ball is great and thats the type of player that the club is trying to rebuild itself on. He is a player with potential that we can expand on and move on at some point, but right now we are delighted to get him into the club.

We brought Pater Gain in as I felt that we need a good balance of old heads in with the new heads. Peter has been there and done it at this level for years now so he knows all about what to expect. Some of the other new lads aren't so familiar with that so we will definitely be looking at peter to fill them in on that.

James Keatings is a player with potential, and if he turns out anything like we think he will then we will have a player. I’ve spoken to Celtic and they have told me that the kid does have ability and he’s obviously got the pedigree. They just didn't feel tha they could provide him with the opportunities he will need to get to the next level and his contract was up so it was maybe best for all parties that they cut ties. If we can develop him, then we might have ourselves a player here.

Jonathan Bateson is very well known around this area, he’s played a lot of games at this level for a few different clubs. When you go into a new league, you have to make sure you have some experience in that league. He is quick and brave. He's decent in the air too. At his level, you tend to see a lot more route one football. Long throws and balls into the box – we are going to have to defend it and we need four or five, maybe even six players that can deal with the high ball and threat.

We are nine or ten short of where I want to be, we are hoping to sign one or two more as well this week as maybe one or two loan players. It’s going to be about getting the right player at the right time. Hopefully those that have signed will prove to be good acquisitions for the club.

Former Dundee defender pens two year deal at Gigg Lane

A product of the Kilmarnock youth academy, Neil McGregor has signed a two year contract with Bury after successfully come through a trial with the Shakers.

27 year old Neil joined Dundee in 2011. He played 17 times for the first team squad before he was released at the end of last season.

Neil has turned down offers from other clubs, including clubs in the Scottish championship, to become a part of the new look Shakers.

McGregor will now continue his pre-season preparations under the tutorship of defense coach Steve Sedgley.

Welcome to the Revolution Neil…

Bury sign Craig Barr and Peter Gain

Bury have completed the signings of Craig Barr and Peter Gain.

Defender Barr, 25, has agreed a two-year deal with the Shakers after leaving Livingston this summer.

He played in Livingston's old Scottish Second Division league winning side and played 35 times for the Lions in the old Scottish Division One last season and was made a contract offer to stay at Almondvale Stadium.

Midfielder Gain, 35, has signed for a year. He joins after he left fellow League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge at the end of last season when he wasn't offered a new contract.

He has extensive experience during his career making over 445 appearances over a 18-year career that has seen him turn out for clubs such as Lincoln City and Peterborough United.

The Shakers completed the signings of Jonathan Bateson, James Keatings and Joe Whight over the past week as the club look to replace the 16 players released at the end of last season.

Bury were relegated from League One in April following a financially-troubled campaign.

Shakers get Joe Whight on three year deal

Bury FC are pleased to announce another addition to the new look squad with Ipswich born defender Joe Whight putting pen to paper on a 3 year deal with the club.

A promising defensive player, Joe has yet to make his first team debut after coming through the ranks at his hometown club Ipswich Town.

Joe has been on trial with the Shakers over pre-season and has done enough to force Stan Ternent into handing him a deal at Gigg Lane.

Bury FC: Bateson & Keatings join League Two side

Bury have completed the signings of Jonathan Bateson and James Keatings on two-year contracts.

Both players had been without a club after leaving Macclesfield Town and Celtic respectively at the end of last season.

Defender Bateson, 22, has also had spells at Bradford and Accrington after beginning his career with Blackburn Rovers.

Striker Keatings, 20, failed to make a single first team appearance for the Scottish Champions in his four years at the club.

His only professional playing experience came when he made 4 appearances for fellow Scottish Premiership side St. Johnstone during a one-year loan deal last season..

The pair make up Stan Ternent's first signings as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the coming League Two season.

Bury FC: Ten in and two out as Ternent re-shapes his backroom team.

Stan Ternent made his first major changes since taking over as first team manager at Bury bringing in Lewis Haldane, Scott Taylor, Geoff Horsfield, Darren Heyes, Steve Sedgley, Nolan Keeley, Glyn Chamberlain, Bobby Roberts, Willie Melville and Carl Butler while Peter Shirtliff and Ben Futcher have left the club.

Ex-Bristol Rovers and Port Vale winger Haldane, who was capped at U-21 level by Wales, will take up the role of the new managers number two.

Scott Taylor, Geoff Horsfield, Steve Sedgley and Nolan Keeley have been brought in as first-team coaches with Darren Heyes to take over as the clubs goaleeping coach.

Former Macclesfield Town assistant manager Chamberlain joins the club as the Head Scout with Scots, Roberts and Melville, to assist him in the role.

Carl Butler joins as the clubs physiotherapist.

"I'm delighted with the quality I've managed to bring in to my staff." Ternent told BBC Sport.

"There is a good mixture of youth and experience in there and I think we have ll the bases covered to carry ourselves through the season.

I don't think that there are any areas that we are lacking for the moment so we will leave the staff as they are now and turn our focus on to bringing in some new players."

The Shakers boss still has the mammoth task of bringing in almost an entire new squad after the club released all but nine of their playing staff at the end of last season.

Stan Ternent speaks on his feelings upon his return to the club and his plans for the future

Our new gaffer faced the media for the first time since he took over the club for his second spell in-charge.

Buryfc.co.uk have captured exclusivity on the interview, where the new boss covers a range of questions from his feelings on his new role, plans for dipping into the transfer market and what kind of tactical approach he will take into the coming season...

Q: You have been unveiled as the new manager of Bury for a second time in your career, what is your thoughts on returning to the club?
Gordon Sorfleet - Buryfc.co.uk

A: I think it's fantastic to be back. I have wonderful memories from my first spell at the club. A very successful spell, so it was a bit of a no-brainer really. The club and the fans haven't had the best of times lately both on the pitch and in the background but when I spoke to Stewart [Day] and he told me he wanted me to help him revive the fortunes at the club, it was a perfect opportunity for me to get back into management. So yes, I'm delighted to be here.

Q: How much will you try to be involved in all aspects of the club?
Jake WIlliams - ITV Sport

A: Well I think it's pretty clear to see that the club is undergoing some major restructuring. There isn't many staff left from Kevin's reign and the club have had to release the majority of the playing staff as well. So this is a massive task and there is going to be a lot of re-shaping. Ideally I'd like to get my own staff in here as soon as I can and then we can look into bringing some new players in.

Q: Some managers are well-known for their hands-on approach, what do you feel your approach to management is?
Micheal Hoyle - Bury Times

A: Well the players are the club, really. Without the players there isn't a team which means there is no football match on a Saturday afternoon. My style has always been an open-door policy to my lads. I want them to feel happy with their relationship that they have with me and feel like they can come to me with any concerns or issues they have got.

Q: Last season is one that Bury fans will want to forget, with troubles both on and off the pitch. What do you feel your chances are of bouncing straight back up and earning promotion into League One at the first time of asking?
Russell Bradley - Bolton News

A: I'll need to have a team of players first! To be honest we can't think that far ahead at the minute. We need to be able to walk before we can run. This season our aim I think has to be realistic. We need to bring in the best players and staff that we can and then we can take it from there. At the end of the day the club needs to make sure that they don't end up in the same state that they have just come out of ever again. Consolidation would be a good start and then we will see how we go.

Q: What would you say is your tactical approach to the game these days, has it changed since the last time you were here?
Lee Carey - Forever Bury

A: Every manager would love to say that they want to play successful, attacking football. But it's not as easy as that. My aim is to bring in the best players available to us that suits our budget and then we can look at the best formation to compliment their abilities.

Q: What can we expect to see from your business in the transfer market, is there cash to spend or will you be looking at picking up some bargains?
Steve Booth - thefootballleague.co.uk

A: Well the chairman has been able to provide us with a little bit of money. Which says a lot about him given the amount of money he has put in already to balance the books and clear the debts. But it's not a lot of money so we won't go mad. Primarily I think we are best to look at players who are available on loan or are without a club.

Q: On the off-chance that there are any agents listening in or reading your comments, is there a particular area of the squad that you would like to improve?
Matthew Holt - Prestwich Advertiser

A: Your having a laugh aren't you? We need a full new team almost, lad! We have a nucleus of players who the club have kept on since last season and that is a good thing but it looks like we will need to bring in players to fill out every position. The key for us will be to bring in the players as quic as we can and get them all used to each other before the season starts.

Q: New managers often brings times on upheaval to clubs. Some of the existing staff and players might fear for their jobs. Are you planning on making many changes?
Andy Reeves - BBC Manchester

A: To be honest I can't say for sure that there will be no departures from the club. I'll be having a chat with the players and staff that we have on the books at the moment and I'll be frank and honest with them. In an ideal world we'll be able to keep what we have and bring in more but that isn't always possible.
