GIMP isn't as good as Photoshop in dealing with cutting, and you'll end up seeing poorer results whatever you do. I believe there's a version of Photoshop which is legally available for free and the techniques have remained mostly similar down the years since then. You'll see a big difference in the quality of your cuts that way
