Months in Review: November/December 2015 (Off-Season)

It has been a quiet two months during the offseason. With all player contracts expiring next November, I have re-signed most first-team players and prospects, leaving only a few thousand dollars in available wage budget and transfer budget. Additionally, I have signed 32-year-old Singaporean central defender, Precious Emuejeraye, who will be a key defender for us this upcoming year.

We ended the season on a positive note, winning our final game. Hassan delivered once again, notching his fourth goal in five starts. Surprisingly, we managed to climb into third position, with our main contender losing a match in which they were heavily favored to win. The Fair Play award was a nice way to cap off the season, considering that we were not in a position to realistically challenge for the title when I joined. Despite his late-season injury, our key striker, Fazrul Nawaz, was awarded a place in the S.League Team of the Year in recognition of his strong performances.

We will aim to continue our strong run of form into the next season, with goals of winning the league title and challenging for silverware in other domestic and regional competitions.

We managed to string together two more wins in as many matches to begin the month, before drawing the next two. Backup striker Hazim Faiz Hassan performed well in his new role, scoring three times in four matches. The draw against Home United, who had been named league champions the day before the match, was particularly disappointing, as we conceded the match-tying goal with minutes remaining in the second half. In addition to winning our final match, we need another result to go our way in order to move into the top three.

I experienced my first match as manager of Warriors the day after signing. We managed to win 1-0, which resulted in my first career win and gave the squad a much-needed morale boost. We were underdogs for the next two matches, playing the second and first place teams, respectively. However, we managed to pull off an upset victory on both occasions -- though at the loss of our key striker in the third match. Two of the team's players were recognized in the S.League Team of the Month for their strong performances of late.

Up to this point, I have been unable to find any suitable Singaporean players to replace my current goalkeeper or to reinforce the midfield and striker positions, so it appears that I will need to work with the pieces currently at my disposal. Although the injury to our first-choice striker is a major setback, I have confidence in the abilities of our young, promising backup. I will continue to focus the team's efforts on playing sound defensive football, while looking to create quality scoring opportunities through time on the ball.

Due to the timing of the pre-season in Hong Kong, my save has begun at around the halfway point of the domestic season in Singapore. After six weeks of unemployment, I have signed with Singaporean side Warriors Football Club. Despite its history as the most successful club in the S.League, it appears to be struggling to maintain a mid-table position this season, in seventh at the time at which I took over.

The squad looks strong at forward and on the wing, solid defensively, but weak in goal. Most of the quality appears to be older, foreign talent (five out of the seven strongest players), which could pose an issue considering the league-imposed restriction to four foreigners in the starting eleven and subs. A few players will remain sidelined for the balance of the season, including a first-team midfielder who would likely be captain were it not for his injury.

In addition to replacing the majority of the current staff, I will look to find a solid keeper and add reinforcements to the middle of the park. I expect to guide the team to a top-half finish, with my sights set on breaking the top three.

I have decided to begin my job search in Hong Kong and Singapore, two Asian countries that consider English an official language, at the beginning of the Hong Kong pre-season (1/8/15). Since there are currently no openings for manager, I will apply for whichever job becomes available first. I plan on managing a club from either nation until I have won a domestic title and competed in the AFC Champions League. At this point, I will shift my search to the Australian League, where I expect to find the English-speaking clubs that offer the greatest opportunity for Champions League success out of the relatively few options available in Asia.

Above is an image of my starting credentials. I will post again as soon as I sign with a club, followed by monthly updates of my adventures.

Note: Screenshot taken two weeks into tenure, hence the studying for new coaching certification.

In my personal experience I have always found Asia the easiest route to success (Not that i've had any) but the smaller nations such as Hong Kong & Malaysia can provide a fast route into the Champions League even though you won't win it there it will be a speedy stepping stone to head to China or South Korea where the ACL winners usually come from, South Korea probably your best option.

South America can be similar (and your Spanish connection will help), Peru, Uruguay or Chile may be your best option to get quick exposure to continental football then move on to Argentina who generally dominate the Libertadores.

Hope this helps, good luck with your adventures.

Very helpful, gaz. I will set the South American and Asian nations to playable to begin, then adjust the setup depending on where I find work.

My only experience with FM is a month-long stint on 15 handheld and a few hours of investigating the various nations and leagues that comprise the 16 default database, but I am looking for a long-term challenge, and I find this one to be particularly intriguing. I plan to start the new career unemployed, with minimum coaching qualifications, American nationality, and Spanish as an additional language (to mimic actual characteristics as closely as possible). Ideally, I would like to make this even more challenging by coaching English and Spanish-speaking teams only. Any suggestions as to where I might be able to find work, as well as which nations/leagues to set to playable? My managerial approach in Fifa career is to begin with lower tier teams (such as those in League Two) and grow them over time through investment in youth first-team players, so it would be ideal if there were any league/side that is particularly conducive to producing young talent.

Thanks for that zeppi7

You have installed the editor data files correctly, but not the lnc files.

The lnc files should be installed in the 1630 folder if you are using the official winter transfer database and in the 1600 and 1601 folders if you are using the default database. If you think you have installed the files correctly, perhaps you can upload screenshots of your respective lnc folders so I can see if there's something wrong in there.

My apologies -- new to Football Manager. Needed to replace existing lnc files in 1600 and 1601 with downloaded lnc since using default database -- runs perfectly now. Thanks for advice.

Downloaded and started new game. Names of German teams appear to have changed (such as Gelsenkirchen to Schalke), but default competition names (such as European Champions Cup) and German national selection remain same as before. Any idea what might be causing this?
