Bristol City away to Brighton tomorrow. After our first win in 11 (with a run of 7 straight defeats in that) against Boro at the weekend I'm confident that a point should be possible. It's the hope that kills me...

I can't really do that because I'm 18 and I have no retail experience, which is expected. They know that while I'd be more competent than a 16-year-old, they'd need to pay me more money and I'd probably demand more hours.

I can believe clothing retail not taking you on but I can't believe that a supermarket won't. Some real special chaps work in supermarkets.

Never been on jobseekers. But took the first pt job I could (Woolworths) when I was 16. Everyone I know that has done the same always walks into jobs when they need them.

Who the fuck does a Masters in Computer Science? There's fucktons of jobs for computing related courses, I got mine while I was still in college

He was quite a greasy goose, not sure I'd employ him.

Been offered a place at Swansea for computer science \o/

When I was temping in a call centre this summer I was sat near a Swansea Computer Science Masters graduate.

He wasn't doing anything with his life and said he couldn't find any work.

*shrug* probably just the experiences of one chap.

I'm signing on this Thursday, I'll ask then. I'll check employment agencies, but I'm not aware of who they are and what they can do. Again, I'll ask on Thursday. It's so annoying that I can't get a Christmas temp job because I have no retail experience, yet they hire thick-as-shit 16-year-old girls from college.

It's because they can fuck over 16 year old girls with really low pay, extra hours and extra work. It's how the retail trade works, worked in a leading high-street retailer in my gap year (instead of going to Peru). The turn over of 16 year old girls is pretty high, but for those few months they'll have to work hard because it's all they can get and the manager can easily sack them (within probationary period).

They probably know that you'll be a bit more savvy than that.

It's not right but my old boss turned away a chap with two degrees (business and something else I recall), who wanted to apply for a 16 hour role (circa 6.50 an hour) because he knew that he'd have to pay him more and that he wouldn't take shit from my manager.

Wrong thread.

I try and stay away from comedy t-shirts. Although I do own a fair amount of corduroy, so probably don't take my advice.

I've been considering a PhD recently, but probably wouldn't be applying until next year as I want to see how my project turns out to see if I'm good enough.

Have you got to apply for funding separately? Funding for scientific places seems to be fairly good luckily.

Depends on the awarding body. For example, applying for an Archaeology DPhil at Oxon would automatically enter me for AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) and their internal scholarships. But at some Uni's for specific studentships (usually funded by bequests etc: i.e. the XXXX XXXX Scholarship in Ancient Greek, or some-such) are advertised via mailing lists and whatnot.

I've already spoken to my future supervisor (fingers crossed), who likes my topic (it's similar to my master's dissertation) and thinks that it has legs and the potential to be funded. Luckily it's different enough not to hinge too much on my Master's work, but I'll still need a grade. I'd start the PhD in October but would only hand my thesis in at Bristol in mid Sep, so might have to start my PhD in Feb or something.

Curse you and your science funding profile!

GCSE? A Level?

Ok.ok. MOST don't.

The reason that I've got this teaching position is to go into state schools to provide Classics outreach, to get kids interested that otherwise might not. More than likely teaching in my old senior school, still going to be weird despite leaving 6 years ago.

Well if you don't get accepted, can't you just take some time off and submit it to other places next year?

Going to submit it to 6-8 places (first choice being Oxford). Will take a year off as you said, and apply the following November. Teaching Classics once a week in local secondary state schools, starting January. Although I'm pretty sure I never want to teach at secondary level (although it's only private schools that teach it anyway.).

What is it you want to do? Be a history professor? That's what you study right?

Yeah, well Roman History/Archaeology Lecturer/Professor, or an academic researcher in the same field(s).

If I had a pound for every penalty we should have had today I'd be able to go on a decent night out. We should have had a penalty on every single set-piece. Brighton defended like Stoke, with players wrestling our strikers to the floor. Then there were the other incidents - Clarke trying to turn away only to be wrestled to the ground. Lee flattened by a cynical block when trying to get on the end of a cross. Hammill brought down (debatable) in an identical situation to that which saw Joel Lynch booked just seconds earlier. Church almost cut in two by a desperate lunge in the last seconds. Poor defending cost us two goals, but the referee was the best defender of their lead.

And if I had to watch Brighton every week I'd kill myself. Absolute cancer of a team.

Really?

If that's your scene and you haven't read it I can't speak highly enough of A People's Tragedy.

Probably the only history book I'd read for personal enjoyment instead of for my degree.

Russian history is a real side interest for me. My degree(s) is(are) heavily based around Roman Imperal history/archaeology.

Wish-listed, thanks!
