I've been considering a PhD recently, but probably wouldn't be applying until next year as I want to see how my project turns out to see if I'm good enough.
Have you got to apply for funding separately? Funding for scientific places seems to be fairly good luckily.
Justicar
Depends on the awarding body. For example, applying for an Archaeology DPhil at Oxon would automatically enter me for AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) and their internal scholarships. But at some Uni's for specific studentships (usually funded by bequests etc: i.e. the XXXX XXXX Scholarship in Ancient Greek, or some-such) are advertised via mailing lists and whatnot.
I've already spoken to my future supervisor (fingers crossed), who likes my topic (it's similar to my master's dissertation) and thinks that it has legs and the potential to be funded. Luckily it's different enough not to hinge too much on my Master's work, but I'll still need a grade. I'd start the PhD in October but would only hand my thesis in at Bristol in mid Sep, so might have to start my PhD in Feb or something.
Curse you and your science funding profile!

There is only one AHRC studentship going for this however (14k per annum), If I don't get that then I remain jobless in a part of the country that could not be less suited for graduates with a humanities degree.

When I was temping in a call centre this summer I was sat near a Swansea Computer Science Masters graduate.
He wasn't doing anything with his life and said he couldn't find any work.
*shrug* probably just the experiences of one chap.

He was quite a greasy goose, not sure I'd employ him.

Think it's only my second first throughout my time at uni. Need to keep it up if I'm going to get a 2:1 overall though..
Justicar
Good, keep going, a Desmond is completely pointless.
Telegram Sam
..what's a Desmond? A 2:2?
Justicar
Desmond Tutu, awful I know..

Well I need to get 64% this year to get a 2:1 overall. It's doable, but if I did straight Politics (which I just got 73%) I'd be fine. It's just that my Economics is so bad and will inevitably drag me down a grade come the end of the year. Wish I did straight Politics.

Really is worth just getting your head down and being in the library as much as possible, 9-6 or something.
I went from very little work in 1st year:67, quite a bit more in second year: 70, in the library ALL the time: 76ish. It definitely pays off.

But yeah, I've been better this year than in previous ones. Still need to step it up though.

The best I can come up with so far is;
"How has the EU’s growing role as an international actor shaped EU-US relations over the course of its existence?"
Any advice on how to tighten it up a bit? I don't feel like I've worded it properly. I've emailed my tutor asking for some advice but he probably won't reply for a few days, so any suggestions would be welcomed.
Justicar
I would maybe go with. "To what extent has the EU's developments in international agency affected its relations with the United States?"
That help?
I have to answer this question in 4000 words for next month: "How does one study ideology?". The other questions are boring and inconsequential. For my "approaches" module.

Ooh, that's good. I'll run it past my tutor. Thanks.

Ah well, I wasn't looking forward to Christmas anyway

School boy error. Should have gone into research. No exams for me, just one essay and my thesis deadline in September. Cushy.
