It's really not. Pellegrini always has two 'interiores' - wide players who cut inside - besides which our full-backs haven't (consistently) been creative forces since the first half of the 2011/12 season. Which is when most teams figured out that only one of our full-backs can cross and only Richards can dribble/burst through a defence and started playing narrower against us to squeeze Silva.

I counted at least 3 instances last night where Navas tried to attack the byline but had to turn back inside because Richards was attempting to go around the outside

I'm not saying the full-backs don't overlap, they do. Just that Navas isn't being asked to cut inside because of them. Pellegrini likes his wide-men to cut-in anyway.

Very much so. Chelsea fans cream over him, wanting him to start all the time, but he's really proven absolutely nothing in the few starts he's had.
