This is a super long shot, but fuck it; why not?

I will be writing an entire book during November as part of NaNoWriMo (see title) and wondered if any moron on here wanted to participate with me.

The premise is simple: write a book in a month and then be happy. There's nothing more to it, but for someone who needs structure and guidelines in their life it's a great incentive to get my stupid idea onto paper and into minds.

Anyone?

I don't really have time for it, but I suppose I'll give it a try.

If you write 2,000 words a day you can do it. The point isn't really to get something magical down, it's to get the process done: quantity over quality. You can edit afterwards. I find, when writing, that I will sit back and read over something and edit parts over and over, when this teaches you to just shut up and write.

Where is the line drawn between a novel and a short-story?

I like the idea of this but I couldn't dedicate enough time to it whilst doing uni work as well. Good luck though.

This bloke reckons a short story is one up to 7,500 words.

The target in NaNoWriMo is 50,000, but I'm going to try to get about 70-8000 because that's about typical novel length.

Any rough ideas about what your novel is going to be about?

I have a rough collection of real life stories that I'm involved with that I plan to string together and interweave with some kind of doomed pursuit of love.

I made a book cover for it a while back:

That cover will need to be updated to reflect your recent name change.

I'd like to do this if I had the time. I wrote half a novella a while back and I never finished it. Got to work and then when I get home I'm tired.

You going for a pseudonym? Or will El Hadji Evans suffice?

Sent. Structurally I might change the third paragraph into the first, but that's for later. There will be errors because you're not supposed to edit until you finish it.

Thank you. I don't really know where it's going to end up yet. Some kind of failed romance and a chapter about ketamine are in my mind right now. Apparently 70% of people who do this write fantasy, which makes sense because if you write yourself into a corner you can just have a wizard save the plot.

I can't stand fantasy because usually, it's just lazy. You're just avoiding the complications of plot-holes and the impossible by using 'magic and shit'.

Fantasy is pretty compelling from a writers perspective because you can just lean back and let your imagination run wild. With that in mind it's actually quite funny how nearly all fantasy just re-uses the same clichés over and over again, with trolls, orcs, elves and mages with long grey beards. Says a lot about how dull the imaginations of most fantasy fans are.

I'd like to have a look at what you've written so far Fanny.

That's horrible generalisation of the fantasy genre.

There's plenty of fantasy authors that don't follow all these stereotypes. It's just lazy making them, you could easily make similar generalisations about other genres, and you'd be right about some authors but there will be others who don't fit the stereotypes.

Cool. I've just been reading some stuff online and Pixar tell me that I should get my ending sorted out before the middle. Which scares me, because I have no idea what I'm going to do with that.

I guess the film script I've been thinking about will turn out brilliant if that is their advice.

Read through all of what you've written now Fanny, liked the bit about male friendship and chuckled at the bit with the Smiths poster. Good read.
