I really don't get why they insist on playing Lahm in midfield. Sure, he's been really good playing there this season, but he's arguably the best fullback in the world and it's not as if they lack other high quality options in the middle.

Algeria's poor final pass and decision making in some fantastic positions has cost them.

And that's game over. 2-0 Germany.

EDIT: YES ALGERIA! Deserved a goal.

Joachim Loew is a complete shitehouse of a manager. No natural fullbacks with two attacking mids on the wings in a 4231 formation and they wonder why they played like shite?

As soon as Schuerrle came on it was much better, they actually had a runner on the flanks.

And you'll have no difficulty finding people who don't understand how sweeper keepers work happy to criticise him for playing "dangerously".

Algeria looked good. Considering that I know a few of their players said they would be observing Ramadan, I was wondering how they would do. But other than being gassed, they kept pushing. Fair play to them.

When? Him rushing out saved about 3 certain goals (or at least 3 1-on-1 situations) due to Germany's defensive mistakes

I'd say more tactical mistakes than defensive mistakes.

The German team was set up so badly.

4 CBs across the back 4 - not too much width from the fullbacks high up the pitch, apart from the RB on occasion.
Lahm holding in midfield - didnt protect the back 4 at all which is what they needed from him last night to stop the counter attacking.
2 "wingers" who always want to come inside & no pace in the team.

I would set Germany up like this:

Neuer

Boateng - Mertesacker - Hummels - Lahm

Kroos - Schweinsteiger

Schurlle - Ozil - Gotze

Muller

More width and pace in the team, Reus would be in for Schurrle if he was fit.

It's probably too late to risk him now, but Erik Durm had one of the stand out seasons in Europe at LB. I'd play him, Lahm at Right-back a runner, either Kramer or Khedira in midfield, then Schweinsteiger alongside with Kroos in front. One of Özil and Götze (doesn't matter which they've both been shite) .

And they need to sit deeper, I don't care what Slashman and Franck say, when you're reliant on your goalkeeper coming out that many times you're on a hiding to disaster, neither Hummels or Mertesacker have the pace to play that high a line.

I'd go along with that. I dont watch too much German football so not sure of all the players, but I'd go along with something like that.

Definitely a bit deeper. They can still play a high-ish line, just not camped on the half way line. Better teams will exploit that massively.

Mustafi is out with a thigh injury now anyway, so Lahm should be back playing full-back

The games today, last 5 minutes of the Argentina game aside, have been utter shite.

I hope USA win, at least they're the underdog, Belgium v Argentina will be excruciating watching.
