In four of the last six seasons, Dwight Gayle’s 13-goal haul would have been good enough to at least equal - but in three cases better - the number of strikes scored by Newcastle United’s leading marksmen in each of those campaigns.

The current Newcastle No 9 has reached the 13-goal mark after just 13 league appearances - averaging a strike every 85 minutes - and we are not even close to the midway point of the campaign yet.

True, Gayle is firing in those goals in the Championship and not the Premier League, but that should not - and does not - dilute his achievements so far this term.

Chronicle literally arguing that the PL and the Championship are equal standard.

They've even provided this helpful list of Championship goalscorers - Who all went on to light up the Premier League

Nathan Ellington (Wigan Athletic, 2004/05) - 24 goals
Marlon King (Watford, 2005/06) - 21 goals
Jamie Cureton (Colchester United, 2006/07) - 23 goals
Sylvain Ebanks-Blake (Plymouth Argyle and Wolverhampton Wanderers, 2007/08) - 23 goals
Sylvain Ebanks-Blake (Wolverhampton Wanderers, 2008/09) - 25 goals
Peter Whittingham (Cardiff City, 2009/10)/ Nicky Maynard (Bristol City, 2009/10) - 20 goals
Danny Graham (Watford, 2010/11) - 24 goals
Rickie Lambert (Southampton, 2011/12) - 27 goals
Glenn Murray (Crystal Palace, 2012/13) - 30 goals
Ross McCormack (Leeds United, 2013/14) - 28 goals
Daryl Murphy (Ipswich Town, 2014/15) - 27 goals
Andre Gray (Burnley, 2015/16) - 25 goals
Dwight Gayle (Newcastle United, 2016/17) - 13 goals*

Can't be arsed to look it up but decent chance if you remove Lambert - Shola has scored more than the rest combined.

Of you remove Gayle - Anichebe probs has more than the rest combined.

I don't want to go all terriersmad and blame the referee for our loss tonight but we lost because of the referee tonight.

Seriously though he was, and this is not even hyperbole, the worst referee I have ever seen. There were fouls in the build up to both of their goals, he denied us a stonewall penalty, literally gave a free kick for nothing one time, allowed Barnet to timewaste as much as they like after he had awarded them 2 goals.

I know we were also shit but after working all day, driving an hour to watch the game, suffering through it, driving an hour and a half back due to road works, and then knowing I have to suffer through work tomorrow with everyone asking me "what happened then?" I really don't want to talk about.

I fucking hate football sometimes.

Brett Huxtable I think his name was, apparently he's been "fast-tracked" from non-league and this is his first season in the Football League so I'm not sure you've had the pleasure yet

Its just one of those games I guess where everyone thought only one result would happen but the favourites choked. Happens all the time. Guess just take it on the chin, then do better at Forest on Friday.

Nah the absolute opposite. Blackburn thoroughly outplayed Newcastle and deserved the win.

Without Colback and Gouffran we're woefully short of class.

Judging from what I've seen and read, yes. But there seemed to be an atmosphere from some people before the game today that all Newcastle had to do was turn up to win, which wasn't really a great idea given a result like this is usually what follows. And if there's not going to be a great deal for the oppo keeper to do, as was the case, then doubly so.

As soon as I saw the team sheet, I knew we were in trouble.

Shelvey has talent but is hopeless if Colback isn't playing, Hayden doesn't know how to play centre midfield, Atsu can deliver a moment, but is otherwise fairly shite, and Ritchie is out of form and totally average.

Dummett was probably our classiest player going forward.....

Maybe I'm being unfair, but with all the hype over Benitez I see this season as a dress rehearsal for next season and we should be looking for top ten at a minimum, and we look absolute relegation fodder.

We picked up a good win yesterday, unbeaten in seven now under Steve Bruce and the only unbeaten team a home in the Championship. The atmosphere seems to be improving from pure poison to cautiously optimistic now.

Can't tell me after that game that:

A) We're not naive;

B) We didn't deserve at least a point;

C) Referees don't actively hate us.

Reading have had NINE penalties in the league this season. NINE. After last night, I'm convinced a decision was made at ref HQ which determined we, under no circumstances, are allowed any decisions. Those two in the second half are actually beyond belief and comprehension. First one is absolutely unbelievable - their lad just takes out Wells as he bursts through. The second is even worse - he just ploughs through our lad then gets up and kicks him again for good measure. We had a great shout in the first half when Scannell got taken out by Warnock, too, and every fucking corner saw theirs wrestling ours to the floor. WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THE FUCKING RULING AT THE START OF THE FUCKING SEASON THAT WAS MEANT TO PUT A STOP TO IT? Wholeheartedly accept that on Wigan's sole corner, ours was doing it to theirs, and that should also have been given.

Not saying we were stellar - too slow in possession, too naive at the back to really deserve to win - but at the same time, it's hardly a level playing field when the opposition is allowed to do that without any kind of fall-out time after time.

It really is every week and it goes beyond a joke.

Wow so that first half has been, er, eventual.

One goal up at half time but have had two players dismissed and Nottingham Forest have missed two penalties.

Fucking hell, I haven't moaned about refs this season, and Wolves, Blackburn, Huddersfield and Fulham have deserved wins over us.

But that was a joke. Lansbury and Lichaj need lengthy bans.

Missed the game but just seen the highlights... Jesus wept. The first one doesn't look like a penalty, nevermind red, and in any case, Lansbury was the instigator. The second I think was probably a pen, but was not a red even accounting for the rule change for this year, and I'm also lost as to why Clark's goal was disallowed.

Bit of a fucking mess all told. Somewhat suitable to round off the shittest week of the season so far.

We could've/should've had a spot kick at 0-0 when Clark was seemingly wrestled to the ground but the ref, surprise surprise, awarded nowt.

Dummett's was never a pen, Lansbury backs into him, to initiate contact. Plus the Bendtner goal was miles offside. - like a good five yards.

And also a lot of terrible decisions, like booking Gouffran and Yedlin for a minor tackle and refusing to book there players for much worse challenges. Booking Darlow for dissent, but not Lansbury. Lichaj also went down holding his head from a shoulder barge.

It was one of them performances, where tbh, it looks like the referee is trying to make a name for himself, rather than trying to officiate the game fairly.

Ah I see, yeah I'll be there. Got a bit of confidence after winning the last 2, but we very rarely string 3 wins together so wouldn't be surprised if we came back down to earth.

We're due a win, too. Not been playing badly - performances have dropped off, and we have been making mistakes, but things out of our control have gone against us too. Seen the team, and I'm hopeful with Hefele back at the back we'll be more solid.

Wait, what? A penalty given against us after what happened on Monday? How did I ever fucking guess. While we're absolutely slaughtering them without scoring a killer goal? Yeah. Standard.

Soft one, too. Having seen it, it's a penalty but it's a much less blatant penalty than any of our appeals on Monday, which adds to the frustration. I'm not criticising the officials today at all, Hefele shouldn't grab him and were I in his boots I'd give it, but it highlights how much we're on the wrong end of complete stinkers like Monday. And all the more frustrating for being in a game where, by all accounts, we should have won by a landslide. I hate football.

You were miles better than us today, first half especially, should have been about 4-0 for you at HT rather than 1-1. I'll have to see the penalty again, hard to tell exactly from where I was.

We were lucky to get a point. I know you've been on a bad run of form but you're a decent team - well organised, full of energy etc, with a couple of players who really stood out (one was on the left wing, another in the middle).

It was a penalty. Puts an arm out and pulls him. Compared to those we've not been given, it's very harsh but we have no room to complain.

Well, reportedly we've been looking through 70 CV's for our managerial post and "nobody fit the bill". This pretty much means that either a.) we've got no money to spend on a half decent manager, b.) nobody with half a brain wants to get anywhere near our club at the recent stage or c.) our chairman talks shite.

Either way, the above means that we're giving our caretaker "managers" (term to be used lightly) Chris Brass and Ryan Kidd some more time. Amazing how productive we've been during our two week break!

Both cards overturned.

Surprised about the Shelvey one as he does kick him - although Lansbury does first so maybe that had something to do with it. Shame we can't have the retrospective goal, penalty and goal scratched off too mind.

Dunno why Forest fans are so angry the cards got overturned - we play them again in more than 3 games time so it wouldn't have effected them anyway, and we can potentially take points off their relegation rivals.
