Its been a weird season really - seems to be the trend that we have won games where we play badly (unless its against Fulham or Sheffield Wednesday) then fail to win games we dominate. Yesterday is irritating, but its still in our own hands - 2 more wins is all it really needs, although in truth Huddersfield dropping any points from hereon out should be enough.
I do wonder if Lascelles does better when paired with Clark. It may well be he got made captain for being a vocal critic of the more apathetic squad members last year and a half-decent run in the team at the end of last season, but he is very inconsistent. A £20million defender he is not... not sure where that rumour came from anyway.
IMO a Mitrovic-Gayle pairing up top would serve better in this tier than one of the two on their own with Diame or Perez in support - particularly if its Diame, who has not been as good as I thought he would be. Perez gets it in the neck a lot but he's been better of late.

Footage emerged over the weekend of what the penalty was given for, and on one hand we got lucky at the fact the ref was watching the incident as it unfolded and in fact called it spot on. Ball comes into the box and Hugill almost rugby tackles Kachunga. Kachunga gets up, and Hugill has a grab at his ankle. Both of these should be penalties in their own right. As Hugill gets up, Kachunga has words with the Preston striker. The ball is about to come in again, at which point Hugill pushes Kachunga over just inside the penalty area - Kachunga is clever, has the opponent pinned, which is great centre forward play. The referee brings the game to a standstill at this point and books Hugill. I don't think he realises where the offence took place, which is why it took so long to give a penalty, but credit to him for watching the incident unfolding when 90% of referees would turn their backs to watch the ball, which was about 40 yards away. Highlights show him right on the spot, watching the whole incident as it develops.
I only know this because of footage I've seen since the game. Didn't see it live, it was right down at the other end. First thing I thought was that we got remarkably lucky because I thought he'd guessed at what happened. He didn't seem to consult his linesman, though that'll be because he was wired up. We did get very lucky, in the sense that although it was a penalty I've only seen this kind of thing given once in the previous 20-odd years I've been watching football. Bit of luck. I'll take it.

If Huddersfield hadn't slipped up v Bristol City, Forest, twice against Rovers they'd probably go up in 2nd and take advantage of Newcastle's poor form.

To be fair if we hadn't slipped up against Rovers twice (and Fulham twice and Sheffield Wednesday twice), we'd have 6 more points and would be in an infinitely more relaxed position.

So... 7 clear of Huddersfield and 6 of Reading with 3 to play and goal difference advantages of 30 on both. And I still can't fucking relax due to how badly we've been playing of late.
Still, fair play to Brighton. Some teams would've still suffered the hangover after they missed on promotion the way they did last season, but they've been very good for most of the campaign, particularly in response to the quickfire defeats against us, Huddersfield & Forest, and on the whole they deserve their PL spot. Also well done to Plymouth and Portsmouth for seemingly beginning the comeback after sinking to the FL basement tier.

Now I'm hoping they can go on and secure the Championship trophy as they've been the most consistent team, which sounds strange considering we took six points from six against them.

Congratulations to Brighton. On the whole, a great club with long-suffering fans who deserve their day in the spotlight. Hughton's one of the nicest men in football and he deserves to take them up. Hopefully former poster Phoenix Arrow is enjoying a celebratory drink or two!

I reckon out of Kayal and Hemed, the latter has the better chance of playing more. Will they keep Murray though as his strike partner? Glad Brighton are up, think they could become a popular "second team" like we were.
I hope for Reading's sake they don't manage to fluke going up through the play-offs. They would get mullered in the Premier League with their current squad, even with new signings.
Fulham might well be the team to clinch that third promotion place. They have form and have now snuck into the play-off places, it might just all fall into place for them.
Redknapp comes in at Birmingham, surely he can keep them safe? Would love to see Rovers leapfrog Forest and send them down! However, the fixture list definitely favours those in Nottingham. This weekend could prove the difference psychologically, if Reading turn up at Forest and Rovers manage to win against Wolves.

Leyton Orient out of the Football League for the first time in 112 years... doesn't really feel right saying that. But bravo to their owner for finding the perfect way to all-but dismantle and destroy a club in only 3 years.
