Utd need to buy a centre back - their defending this season has been below par.

We haven't had a fit selection of defenders yet, so I'm hoping the problem can be solved internally.

Maybe so but Evans just doesn't strike me as someone who is going to be genuinely world class - which is what Man Utd should be aiming for.

True, but he's still only 25. Rio Ferdinand was still making errors more associated with his younger brother's lapse concentration in between titanic performances at that point in his career, so I'm optimistic in regards to Evans. I agree that we may need a younger centre-back to be developed, given Vidic returning back from some major injuries and Ferdinand's long-term future in doubt.

I think alongside a genuinely world class 25-26 year old Evans could develop into an incredibly useful player for Man Utd - but unless Vidic returns to his previous form (I don't think he will, just my opinion though) I think Man Utd need to go out and spend 10-20m on a centre half.

Maybe Mads Hummels.

I just don't think playing Smalling and Evans together will reap rewards for Utd - this season the defence has been incredibly bad for a Ferguson team - he's normally got them well organised.

I don't really rate Phil Jones defensively and Smalling looks a little unsure of himself without Ferdinand/Vidic beside him, so I would agree with you. We've been offensively poor at keeping it tight at the back this season considering the standards set at the club. I believe this might be due to the fact that we have no real anchor man in midfield and Rafael and Evra are essentially deployed as wing-backs in a flat 4-4-2.

I don't think playing a centre midfield two of Scholes/Carrick - Carrick/Giggs - Scholes/Carrick can help the defence at all - especially with as you say the two attacking fullbacks that Utd like to employ.

If I was to spend major money at Utd (I don't think its neccesary mainly due to City/Chelsea ineptitude) it would be at centre back though. A midfield enforcer wouldn't go a miss either.

I don't rate Phil Jones either - I think he'll move on to a club like Newcastle/Everton within a few years if he doesn't impress if given a chance in holding midfield.

Jones has all the attributes to be a world-class defender, but I'm prejudiced by the fact that he runs around like a headless chicken on occasion and constantly rotates between looking confused or fearful of his own existence.

Demba Ba has joined Chelsea. 3 and a half year contract.

As for United I think we would benefit with another center back, a shame Shawcross signed a new contract, as Poe said Hummels would be a good signing.

Shawcross isn't good enough for Man Utd, i don't rate him very highly at all really. Its just the fact he's English he gets so much hype.

Evans has done very little wrong in the past 2 years to justify how under-rated he is.

He looks like a rabbit caught in headlights all the time, and he's prone to the occasional fuck up (which are becoming fewer and further between), but as ball playing centre-halves go I can't think of many in the League that have been better than him.

We've had problems with our defence, but they're actually fairly easily explained.
1. Evra's defending is laughable, it's not that he can't defend, it's that he doesn't bother. At least he's making up for it with goals at the other end, because he's never far from being the reason we've conceded them.

2. Ferdinand is not the player he once was, any player with pace can cause him problems and he's never been a physical player, this has been coupled with the fact that the injuries we've had have forced him alongside Evans who is not his ideal partner. So we've conceded a ridiculous number of headers, and conceded frequently from set pieces.

3. Until recently Carrick's form has been dodgy, and his midfield partners have been rotated massively meaning the midfields been giving us nothing defensively. His form has improved and with the exception of Newcastle (which is explained by point 4) we conceded one at Swansea (Evra/De Gea fuck up), and kept clean sheets against West Brom and Wigan, Cleverley alongside him consistently has helped. Players that can run instead of Scholes or Giggs or (sadly) Fletcher have stopped us being over run.

4. Injuries have stopped us from having a settled back four, Vidic has been out. He's come back, and Rafael's got injured. Ferguson's bizarre rotation of De Gea has not helped either, thankfully, that seems to have stopped.

Oddly, by far the two worst players of our back 5, Evra and Ferdinand, have been getting the most praise and the 3 players that have been broadly speaking excellent De Gea, Evans and especially Rafael have gone under the radar.

I don't think it's particularly a personnel issue, the most important area to improve is left back and, with Carrick in form, I actually think we're fine in midfield.

Jones is bizarre, when he came in and did really well to start with people went so OTT 'England Captain', 'Duncan Edwards mk 2' he was nailed on as England's best player for a generation and the only question was whether he would captain his country from centre back or midfield.

Since his injury when he's struggled a bit everyone thinks he's shit.

Is he gonna be an England regular? Probably, he already is tbh. Manchester United regular? He's a pretty good partner to everyone except Vidic imo, so if he can overtake Smalling and Evans in his development then it wouldn't surprise me. England captain? It's more likely than him joining Everton any time soon.

Manchester City send almost third of ticket allocation back to Arsenal
• Tickets at the Emirates priced at £62 this Sunday
• 'It just shows that clubs are out of touch with reality'

Manchester City have returned close to a third of their allocation for Sunday's Premier League match at Arsenal, after supporters balked at the £62 ticket price.

The Premier League champions were given a 3,000 allocation for the fixture but 912 were sent back and are now being sold by Arsenal. The match at the Emirates, which kicks off at 4pm and is live on Sky Sports, is classed as Category A and therefore carries the highest ticket cost for Arsenal's Premier League games. The London club's own supporters have themselves become increasingly vocal about pricing – Arsenal's tickets in an equivalent area on Sunday, plus the returned away tickets, will still cost £62.

City have sought to play down the affair and Arsenal insisted they are close to selling out the remaining tickets. Kevin Parker, the general secretary of the Manchester City Supporters Club, said: "It's the most expensive amount I can ever remember paying for a ticket in my life, for a Sunday afternoon game which is live on satellite television.

"And it's not as if finding a television to watch the game on is difficult nowadays. Even if the game wasn't live, to charge £62 to watch it is ridiculous, but to charge that amount when people can see it live on TV is crazy.

"It just shows that football clubs are out of touch with reality. If City supporters are travelling on a supporters' club coach it will cost £30 per person. That's £92 before they have even done anything; add in a programme, food, drink and you are looking at £125-£130 per person.

"There are a combination of things at play here. Some people cannot afford the price, especially as it is just after Christmas, and there are some who just refuse to pay £62. This is also the first time in a long while that I remember City fans saying to me they could pay the money but are refusing to do so. That is a brave decision to take. Soon, though, fans will vote more strongly with their feet and clubs like Arsenal will have to decide what to do about ticket prices."

Before the start of the 2011-12 season, a number of Arsenal supporters bodies contacted the club to point out their unhappiness over admission prices. A survey carried out in October confirmed Arsenal have the most expensive adult matchday ticket, £126, and season ticket at £1,955 in England's top flight.

The Arsenal Supporters' Trust has also lobbied their club for two years over ticket prices. In 2011 the group expressed "concern that loyal Arsenal fans are being priced out of attending matches. The current economic climate means many fans are suffering.

"Arsenal's commercial revenue is £50m less than Manchester United, annually. This is the area where the club should prioritise raising extra money, rather than increasing ticket prices."

But so far this season Arsenal have the second highest average home crowd in the league at 60,094, more than 10,000 ahead of Newcastle United in third. The Emirates has a quoted capacity of 60,361.

Ivan Gazidis, the Arsenal chief executive, at that point defended such figures by saying: "We've seen ticket prices rise across the game. This isn't just a football issue. If you look at the prices of entertainment across the board they have gone up significantly in recent years and clearly we now have an environment where people are economically challenged.

"What we have done is try to hold those prices down, for example our Capital One Cup prices have been £10 for adults and £5 for children.

"What we know, because of the tremendous take up, is that there are people who want to watch top class football but for whom price is a factor. That is something we have to be continually conscious of."

"I wanted to sign for Monaco before I went to Everton but my ex-wife likes a lot of animals. I like a dog or something but not what she likes - zebras and all that sort of stuff.

"If I went there I could have made a lot of money because I wouldn't have had to pay tax there. I phoned my wife and said "'hey they only have apartments there and you can't have a zebra in the flat, you'll have to leave them at home'.

"That was not her thing and she didn't want to go there, so we went to rainy Liverpool."
