Whatever tiny chance (like literally tiny) we had of qualifying for it has just entirely disappeared.

Fantastic
I mean, you thought it might, even slightly, be on? Because that's really, really dumb.

I'm an optimistic guy, you know, never say never and all that.

Slight possibility because Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal are having dreadful years and Everton are average. Liverpool would only be 3 points behind Everton if they won tonight.

Only 17 points off an aspiration they don't have, got it.

Yeah exactly, outside challengers.
But the reality of the situation is unless they do on a ridiculous run of form it's a pipe dream. They also hugely changed the team, don't have a good enough striker and changed manager, European qualification was clearly the aim this season.

Terrific run.

Draws at Man City and Arsenal were probably what he was relating to. It's a very disappointing result today, and realistically, the top 7 teams as it stands are simply put, better than us. We don't have the consistency to fight with the top 6 atm- best possible finish is definitely 7th.
I kind of hope Everton put in a real surge for 4th. Spurs and Arsenal haven't exactly been firing goals left, right and centre recently, and look frail at the back- if Everton get on a small good run, they could do it.

17 points behind is not 'outside challengers'. They're team hasn't changed that much they lost Modric which they'd been expecting. The only other major loss was VdV who didn't seem to be used that much anyway, and Ledley King. They've brought in Dembele, Sigurdsson, Vertonghen, Dempsey, Lloris. + Holtby, made Adebayor permanent and had Caulker return.
Defoe, Dempsey and Adebayor may not be world class, but they are still very good Premier League strikers. Probably better than Chelsea and Arsenal had.

Which is what I said, if they're outside challengers that literally means they have an outside chance of challenging. That doesn't mean they should challenge every season, because then they wouldn't be outside challengers. It literally means that as an absolute best case scenario they should be up there, and it doesn't mean they've had an awful season because they're not.
They lost 3 key players last season however you want to spin it in VDV, Modric and King, they replaced them with younger players and they replaced their manager with a younger manager. This was clearly a season of consolidation and an attempt to build a base upon which to challenge in a season or two, as for their strikers they're not even 'very good': Adebayor is appalling when he can't be arsed and he can't be arsed more often than he can, Dempsey had found his level at Fulham and is struggling with the step up and Defoe just does not have enough to his game besides shooting on sight.
Besides, seeing as your initial point was to do with Liverpool and European spaces it's clearly irrelevant because, with the caveat that Bale needs to stay fit, they're a far more likely proposition to secure it than Liverpool, before or after todays result.

They're just as close to the bottom 4.

Carroll.
If we won against West Brom and then Swansea on Sunday we would have been 6 points of 4th, it was hardly no chance.

And if I won the Lotto on Saturday I would be a millionaire and could pay you to roller skate for me in a pink tutu if I wanted.

And you had a chance of winning the lottery, providing you bought a ticket.
