I've seen a lot of 3D kits here on the forum and I thought why don't we have something that can convert those into 2D kits? Well, you can find the answer below. In 2020 I started with the 3D to 2D standard kit conversion template for Photoshop, whereby you copy and paste elements from the kit into smart objects that are warped into the right place. For FM22, I've made more improvements to the standard kit and also added support for 3D to SS kit style conversion!
We also use a script that uses your config.xml and transforms that into an output directory with the kits of your choice! @DokteurHaisse did an amazing job creating a Photoshop JSX script, that automatically generates the 2D minikits from an input file (config.xml) of your 3D kits directory. Together, we made it a bit more user friendly (also for macOS users).
There are two tutorials included in the zip, both for the script as for adding the kit manually to the template.
Running into any issues with the download or do you want to perfect this project? Let me know!
Drop you creations below, I'm curious to see what you all made!

2D Standard Kits Template (.PSD)
- v1 (04/12/2020) - Initial release
- v2 (05/12/2020) - Neck/collar updates
- v3 (05/12/2020) - Adding a new overlay that adds small lighting especially for dark/colored kits
- v4 (06/12/2020) - Big update! @DokteurHaisse created a script for Photoshop and together we bugfixed a lot. Select your 3D config.xml file and let Photoshop do the magic itself! Furthermore, this update includes some minor tweaks to the lighting again.
- v5 (09/12/2020) - Performance update. @DokteurHaisse came up with an amazing idea to replace the smart objects and use temporary files. This speeds up the process by 8-10 times! It is important to keep the PSD file and the 'tmp' folder next to the JSX script. We managed to generate over 60 shirts in 3 minutes. Have fun!
- v6 (13/12/2020) - Small update, fixing very minor issues on the right arm smart object.
- v7 (29/12/2020) - Big update fixing a lot of issues! Some rework has been done to the shirt and arms smart objects. For example the shirt and left arm did not align correctly (thanks @Svartowiz) and the right chest/shoulder has been reworked. The kit colors are restored, meaning less desaturation. Furthermore, the script is extended and now adds an inner stroke of 1px on 0% opacity to the kit, resulting in no white outline in the exported PNG. This is especially noticeable on dark kits.
- v8 (10/03/2021) - Big release! The new files contain new lighting and placement fixes. It will still contain some issues with the symmetry, however it seems like SI has this symmetry issue in their template/conversions as well. I've mapped Sparta Rotterdam away (has a lot of lines) over the new template and they are 95% correctly mapped. The lighting is completely revamped and matches SI's official kits way better than before! Especially noticeable on darker kits.
Version 22.1 (17/10/2021) - From now on no updates in this post anymore. 3D to 2D conversion project renamed, with the introduction of 3D to SS kit styles. Template completely remade, collar support added.

I tried to create a 2D shirt using your method, but unfortunately results are not as expected because some parts of the shirt are missing (like trim on the shoulders or along the flanks), especially in the case the shirt have a complex pattern.
Definitely a valid way to create a 2D shirt if you wish to use only the default kit style as long as the shirt is not particulary complex, otherwise the risk is to lose some shirt details.
Just my feedback and my opionion, obviously. Maybe a better cutting process or a better shirt positioning can help if you're planning to update these psd files in future.

I think it's possible to improve your template especially in the top section (around the shoulders and the neck) but it's really nice
I also think it would be so so great to have this tool automated in some kind of way, and I would love to help with that. I don't know much about Photoshop but I can code, and I was actually already starting a project whose goal was to create an interface where you can upload a zip with all your 3d textures, and the app would analyze all the config.xml to create all corresponding 2d kits (it's really just an idea and a few lines of code right now, but I really think that's something that would be great, as the fragmentation of 2d and 3d kits every year is kind of a nightmare when you want a complete set of kits tbh)

Wow it's really visible on the Lyon kit. Thanks for the feedback. Probably will update the file this weekend trying to fix the neck. I warped the smart object, so I have to tweak that warp setting a little more. Mostly visible on Adidas ones I think.
These are some more previews of the current version, really looks like it was made by SI in my opinion. The quality really differs and depends on whether the 3D texture is like in place (logo wise), sometimes the logo's are like on the shoulders of the 2d kit, meaning the 3d kit actually needs tweaking.
I was thinking about a tool too, but I'm not really a programmer haha. Would be amazing if there was something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jHblnMYFKM
Regarding automation: would already be a lot better if you could just load in one 3d file and that the pieces are extracted by itself. Don't know if that is possible within Photoshop.
Edit: The images above are from version v2, without lighting fixes

For sure in the end it is not the goal to recreate SI 2D kits off course, so if they are a bit off it's ok (when it is not noticeable ingame). Thanks for helping me out!
@Ivs, can you send me your 3D files and also try the new version? Sometimes, because the 3D files are not properly placed things may look out of place. With original SI kits the mapping is like 90% ok. For example, this community Juventus kit below is a bit out of place in terms of how big the logo's are:

I was able to create a script that use the PSD template to generate the files (and also create the corresponding config.xml file), here it is : http://www.mediafire.com/file/nzcdfiiezlpfspk/script.zip/file
To use it, open Photoshop : file > scripts > browse, and choose the script.jsx file (it must stay right next to the 2d-template.psd file), then it will asks you for the original config.xml file (meaning the file inside your 3d textures directory) and then you will choose the output directory.
I dind't know anything about Photoshop scripting a few hours ago so it's probably not perfect :p (it's currently very slow for instance, I'm pretty sure it can be improved, it took me almost 20 minutes to generate all 60 PL shirts)
wfm18
Wow this is huge. However, I can't get it working (macOS Big Sur, latest Photoshop version) > it just only generates and config.xml with this:
<record>
<boolean id="preload" value="false"/>
<list id="maps">
</list>
</record>
I don't know if it is still running in the background or anything. I don't get any information on if the script is running (status) or finished or whatever. Would be cool to have a message like '60 kits found' and then 'processing 1/60'... Don't know if that is already the case.
I looked into the code of the script. I think most time will actually come from saving closing and opening the documents. I know that for the smart objects you don't have to close it, when you reopen and save it works perfectly. Next to that, when it constantly adds layer after layer, maybe it is a good idea to delete all layers, add the new layer and then save (the filesize will probably be smaller > faster saving)

I was searching for standard kits since I got FM20 as the new design of kits is really beautiful but didn't find anything. @wesfm18 Those kits look great! I'm no expert with PS, but I use Gimp for basic tasks like cutout faces. @DokteurHaisse I may be able to help to automate the process if you use powershell/python. Not an expert on these also but I have the basics++ and I'm quick to learn 🙂
wfm18
Thanks @gambe945! Don't worry I'll post a lot of standard kits in the upcoming months so you can collect them all.
If you could help us automate even further that would be great. Currently it is ok as well, it takes some time but not ages. It's already so much faster than creating all the 2d kits by hand anyway.

Hi @WhiteH, thanks for your feedback, really appreciated! I'll look into the right sleeve. I mapped that one over SPAL I believe, since they have a sleeve with a lot of lines which I tried to exactly match. I'll look into some more kits and see if I can replicate the issue above. It could also be that the logo's on the right sleeve of the 3D kit are not in the correct position, but I'll let you know as soon as I know more.
Could you send me the 3D kit in a PM? I can then also load it into the 3D kit viewer, to check if there are any positioning errors within the 3D document.

I don't know how you achieved this result, it seems like the smart object warping did not work for you. Which version of Photoshop are you using?
Only issue I found was that on the right arm (so on the left in the kit above) the lines do not connect, while on the 3D viewer they do (so that needs fixing in the 2D generator). However, as you can see on both the 3D preview as the 2D kit the logo's on the arm are not clearly visible > this is also happening for SI's kits, so I won't be changing the mapping there that much.
Anyway, what club is this? I can help you finalize some elements on the 3D kit so they look nicer (for example the logo's need a little rework)

this is not necessary, this is just a sketch!

v6 - 13-12-2020 - Small update, fixing very minor issues on the right arm smart object.

I'm also having the same trouble with the necks on my shirts as above using Photoshop CS5 v12.0.
wfm18
Hi @trueskyblue87, I did some research and I found out that your Photoshop version does probably not work with the template. In the template there is a smart object which I warped to match the slope of the kits of SI. In your case, there is no warping of those layers, meaning the collar is very low (basically all over the place) and I get very different results within my exports.
If you want to convert any kits I suggest upgrading your Photoshop or ask me in PM and I'll convert them for you 🙂

I also have a bunch illustrator files for all the '19 kits (for the 3D kits) which are the similar format to the flat Barcelona kit in the template - are these the same formate as the older in game flat files do you know? If not happy to redraw
I can help you out with these if you'd like, which league would you like me to get started on?

Good to hear! If those kits are real clubs, just show us what you create! I'm very curious! About the 2D to 3D conversion; would be cool but is not possible: in the 3D kit you additionally are able to specify the back of the kits, long sleeves, shorts and socks. So converting the other way around would not make sense; furthermore the 2D kits are basically just a preview of the 3D kits. SI also converts 3D to 2D and not the other way around. I hope this answers your question @ismmkkdm.
I'll ask @hammer9 to create a request thread/general discussion thread in which we can post stuff like this. The reason there are no Boca/Argentinian First Division 2D Standard Kits is because there is no (good) 3D source available. The Boca kits I for example converted have the sponsor almost at the bottom of the shirt and the logo on the shoulder instead of the chest. I'll update you as soon as there is a good source available.

The one to the left is the SI made and the one to the right is using the script. The issues are that the color is a bit off, but even more noticeably is the fact that the line on the right arm isn't aligned even though I used SI's own 3D kit from the graphics file.
The 3D kit is here for investigation: https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/Bif4TjmMqy29HOiDfBMwtBUUVryfH1eg2pjcrdWE.png
