Hello, I have made these clippings of the Deportes Valdivia team from Chile. I would like some advice on how to improve them. Greetings and excuse my English, translator XD

Do you have the original sources for them too? I'll have a proper look at them later, but at a glance what I can see is that cuts should be cropped no more than 2-3 pixels beneath the chin and/or facial hair, so that the face takes up as much space in the canvas as possible. Also, if the sources are large enough, then cuts should ideally be in 250x250.

I got them out of here https://deportesvaldivia.cl/primer-equipo/jugadores/ . I used the print screen as it was easier for me than working with the individual images

The sources you get by using print screen are of a much inferior quality and of a smaller size than the ones actually available on the website, though. You can see this when you compare the size of your cuts to those in baki's pack.

For this page, you can get better quality images by right-clicking on an image and opening it in a new tab, which takes you to this URL: https://deportesvaldivia.cl/assets/uploads/2020/03/12-gaston-rodriguez-341x472-c-default.png

If you remove the bit in red and bold, it'll take you to a (slightly) bigger version of the image initially displayed which will provide a better version of the cut.

In terms of cutting technique, there's not much to add to my initial point about cropping closer to the chin and aiming for 250x if the source allows it because they were otherwise perfectly fine, but do remember that the better the source image, the better its cutout is likely to be 😉

Given the poor quality of some of those sources, they're about as good as can be expected.

Keep in mind that cuts like 29123240 should probably be saved as 180x180 since they don't really have enough quality to be in 250x. For this cut, I'd also crop the cut a bit closer to the top of the head; 2-3 pixels is enough.

Nice to see you've got the hang of rotating images before cropping too 🙂

The top of the hair and the bottom of the chin doesn't have to be that close to the edge of the cut, but it's otherwise fine, given the source image 🙂

Attention all cutters (and perhaps also frequent requesters):

For all those who use remove.bg to cut images, possibly the most tedious part of the process is having to manually crop the original source to an area around the face so that the face retains its sharpness when larger sources are put through remove.bg

Thanks to https://croppola.com, even this process can be automated now with the site automatically detecting the face in an image and cropping an area around it. If the automated process is not immediately satisfactory, there are a number of options you can toggle to get it right.

Thanks to @bakizp for the heads-up on this tool 👍

Is that good?

Sorry about not replying earlier but I was unwell for the last few days.

It's not bad, but there's some snow (click on the image to see it on a dark background, which makes it much more clear) and the image should be cropped much closer to the chin (no more than 2-3 pixels beneath it). Was it done using remove.bg?

This specific image was already without the background. I didn't have to use remove.bg.

But I will do it according to your guidelines, I will use the site and cut it closer to the chin.

Thanks for the feedback

Use it anyway to get the snow removed 😉

There's a slightly reduction in image quality between this and your first cut. I suspect you've cropped your first cut and then upscaled it to 250x. You should always work from the original source instead as that will ensure the highest quality. Other than that, it's perfectly fine; no snow, collar visible and chin close to edge of canvas 👍 Maybe you could have cropped closer to the top too, but that's just nit-picking.

Can you give us the original source?

I'm not a big fan of pre-cut sources because they can, somewhat counterintuitively, take longer to cut properly.

Anyway, I cropped the source (attachment 1) and put that through remove.bg and saved it. The saved copy still had some snow, so I put it through remove.bg again and this time, it was much better. I cropped it, brightened it and resized it to 250x250 (attachment 2). Not much different to yours, truth be told…

@TiagoSeattle Sometimes when a source is precut, I find putting it on top of a white background and then using remove.bg to re-cut that image removes snow better.

Is photopea.com and remove.bg good enough to do good cut outs in 250x250 faces? Or am I better off sorting myself some version of PS?

Photoshop is obviously ideal, but you should be able to do pretty much everything with photopea. There is no reason at all why you shouldn't do excellent cuts with it, especially with the kind of sources you've posted. As you're still starting, I would recommend posting your first draft cuts for feedback in this thread rather than on the main forum. In this way, having to continually re-cut images because of the same issues would be avoided 👍

So got remove.bg to do this, but obviously the hair isn't great and collar/neck needs sorting too.
What's a good way of sorting the hair out with photopea?

@j6k4, with the original source having been pre-cut already (and badly at that), that's about as good as you're likely to get.

a little draft attempt I did.
1) source was already pre-cut
2) I used remove.bg + photopea

3 I had to go over some “green snow” around the edge of his hair
4) collar was brought higher up
any feedback? @mons

Not bad. There's still a bit of green around the edge of the hair and the reddish lighting on the sides of his face looks a bit weird. I've had a quick go at ‘fixing’ the lighting and removing the remaining green o the hair.

@j6k4, I agree with SSP's assessment but it is otherwise a very decent cut. Perhaps try doing a source which isn't pre-cut, since that'll be a fair bit different 👍

Thank you for your feedback guys.

  • My idea was to go through some nations/leagues that are missing cutouts.
  • the ”easier” way for me to find source images was to get them from the official club website on player profile pages and unfortunately most of them so far are already pre-cut.
  • Ideally I’d want to cut them the quick and easier way which is more consistent but I also want to do them to a decent standard.
  • Any tips on that? Thanks

There are hundreds of pending sources in our request forum (some from yourself, hint hint). Some are requested individually and some are in packs. If you want to be practical, you should take on some of these requests and avoid spending time searching for sources yourself. There are sources of varying difficulties in terms of cutting and from a wild variety of teams and nations, so you'll be sure to find something to suit your needs.

It is not very common for a person's best available source to come from his team's official website profile, actually.

If you use remove.bg and photopea.com and follow the guidelines in the first post, you should be able to produce quality cuts quickly. For the time being, though, since you are still starting out, I recommend posting a few more draft cuts in here for our feedback before plunging yourself into cutting batches of imagess, so that you have a firm grasp of the basic requirements and techniques before starting ‘mass production’, as it were 👍
