Hughes is not a good manager. His failures out-number his successes.

3 successes to 2 failures?

Man City and QPR were spectacular failures though.

He did a very good job at Blackburn and pretty well with Wales, but he was disastrously bad at City and QPR. His little spell at Fulham was hardly a resounding success either.

Fuck knows why he keeps getting hired. It's like with McLeish, it just does't make sense.

Hughes isn't that bad. He did okay at Blackburn and Fulham

He was superb here. Step above McCleish and his dinosaur tactics IMO regardless of what happened at QPR.

Stoke would be better not giving him a lot of money. When he didn't have a lot here, he bought Samba (400k), Nelsen (free), Benni Mac (2.5m), Santa Cruz (2.5m), Bentley (few hundred k), even Bellamy was only £4m I think. And he got the absolute best out of all of them.

That's why it's so hard to understand what happened at QPR - he kept signing completely the wrong kind of player, misjudged the situation horribly.

People will remember his spell at QPR over Rovers and, to a lesser extent, Fulham, though so if he messes up at Stoke it'll probably be the last time he can walk into a PL job.

Should never have got the City gig, he seems to have replicated his transfer strategy from there at QPR.

And? I don't particularly think Jol has been a success at Fulham either. They've been way too inconsistent.

I'd call getting Fulham to 8th a good season for them - they aren't exactly big spenders.

Hughes did a good job there I think.

Well neither Redknapp did better at QPR.

I saw the theory once the reason he left Fulham, was because they were never going to spend much money. And he has Kia Joorchabian as his agent, so it looks like he's being influenced by agents or something.

8th at Fulham is pretty good though.

It wasn't a bad season but considering what Fulham achieved the year before (finishing only a few places lower in the league, as well as reaching a European final and going a round further in the FA Cup) and the additions they made to the squad, including Dembelé, it wasn't that impressive a season either.

Well neither did Redknapp do any better at QPR.

Hughes set the foundation for the season though, and Redknapp had to rely on Bosingwa, Park etc..

He didn't have to rely on them at all, he got a January transfer window where he chose to spunk 100k a week each on Samba and Remy.

Also rumors floating around, that he's been released too, which probably, started the "oh why would we release a young up and coming player? He must have failed a drugs test" theory.

I'd imagine Hughes will do a good job at Stoke.

Not surprised he fucked up at QPR considering he came in and just did a spend all the money job.

Hughes seems to be a more reliable manager at clubs that don't give him absurd amounts of cash.

He bought lots of poor players for big money at QPR and Man City, but was great with the (relatively) small budget at Blackburn and did alright at Fulham. But I think the stigma as come from the quite moronic way he left Craven Cottage and then wound up spunking away crazy cash at QPR.

Saying that I think he should've tried a go at a Championship side. But then again if he carries on his QPR form he will be in charge of a Championship side.

I forget the issue at Fulham. Wasn't it due to his contract ending?

Yeah, he had a one year contract and thought he could better job so didn't want to discuss an extension with Fulham.

He was rumoured for the Chelsea job at the point iirc

Fairly certain he had a two-year deal with an option to leave at the end of the first season.

Ask and ye shall receive.

Although it's been speculated heavily for 4 months he's coming back, I'm slightly surprised he's game to jump back on Roman Abrahmovic's managerial roundabout. Not least given last time, winning the FA and Carling Cups and coming 2nd in the league was not good enough.
