He isn't and he won't.

I know.
Fuck you.

Carrick and Thiago with Kagawa just in front of them would be pretty deadly.
Jamieandhisego
Carrick, Thiago and Kagawa is an excellent midfield three.

..Is it that obvious?
K3V0
This.
Jamieandhisego
Yeah, but his form is so patchy.

It'd be great going forward but it looks entirely unconvincing defensively. Of the three Carrick is the most competent defensively and it's still not his strong suit. Personally I think United need a more physical, defensive midfielder than they do another playmaker. Because talented though Thiago is, Carrick and Kagawa aren't exactly doing badly.

If the entire midfield was wiped out due to the coronavirus yeah.

It's funny, because I'd argue Carrick's strong suit is definitely as a defensive unit.
Enough has been said about Carrick's passing, and its highlighted because of his lack of an offensive partner, but in terms of his positional awareness and reading of the game there is few that are better than him. I think the fact he's such a cerebral player playing in a position that is the engine room of a team metaphorically and, in terms of energy expended, belies how good he actually is defensively.
I think it's because of what he's good at actually that means he goes so under the radar, unless you're acutely looking for it you won't easily notice what he does defensively unlike the more hustle and bustle style of midfielders. He's rarely caught out of position, but even when he is he has a surprising turn of pace and is deceptively strong.
I think it's horribly unfair to describe Carrick as only 'competent' defensively, I'd argue at United he's been almost universally in the range of good to exceptional defensively and that's been a constant even when his passing has been less incisive and Carrick has been derided as a 'passenger'.

I can push to good but never exceptional.
Man Utd still need an enforcer in there.

Carrick > Barry as a creative midfielder.
Both have been hideously underrated for large chunks of their careers.
K3V0
I thought Barry was a very good player when at Villa, not so much since he's gone to City.

Nah, Barry's just aided by the fact he has usually had a partner that knows what the fuck he's supposed to do when his teams not got the ball.
Carrick's best partner defensively has been a bloke who has bene ridiculed for his inability to tackle. Fletcher and Hargreaves didn't do too badly to but then Hargreave's legs fell off and Fletcher couldn't play 90 minutes without needing a shit, so there was never really any chance to form a partnership.
Slashman X
What a terrible point you just tried to make
Ninja
Not really.
Carrick's been a one man midfield more often than not.
Barry's had players that are actually good alongside him and a chance to form a partnership. The fact Carrick is still better than him despite Barry's favourable circumstances for the latter doesn't reflect well on Barry.

At this point I wouldn't even be mad.
Liam Miller could probably do a job these days.

He's been one of our most influential players since the takeover. He's only really started to decline in the last season.
Hilariously inaccurate.
