Now You See Me

It could've been amazing but it settled for quite good in the end, with so much confusion denying it a stronger ranking.

Sharknado and 2 headed shark attack are playing back to back on Foxtel here. I blame you lot for bringing them up the other week.

My internet went down at three this morning, which freed up some time to watch Only God Forgives...

Christ, where do I begin. I really want to like this film, but it makes so many fucking errors it hurts my brain. The film is an hour and a half in length and you can genuinely cut half of that away from all the time the film spends having cameras pan around characters or just looking at Ryan Gosling’s motionless face.

Speaking of Ryan Gosling, welcome to one of the worst acting performances of all time. Actually wait, that’s not fair. Welcome to one of the worst written and directed acting performances of all time. Gosling does nothing in this film, literally nothing, name a scene where he isn’t fighting and I can guarantee it involves him staring blankly at someone or something. Terrible.

As I said, I wanted to like this film, the basic concept of a reluctant revenge film makes sense. But it makes so many errors, most of all the time wasting. It’s things like establishing the concept of dream sequences (when Gosling is watching that bitch strip) and then filming an identical scene (where he meets up with his mother) which turns out to not be a dream. It just annoys me, the film as a whole. It’s like someone just said to Refn “hey, I saw Drive, I loved that movie, do what the fuck you want” and he took that as take every dramatic pause and stretch it out, strip away all dialogue and remove any notion of story progression, all in the name of what… mystique?

Even the ending is absolutely ghastly. This film… I can’t handle how extravagantly bollocks it has managed to be, I guess it’s the result of two years of smoke blown up both major stars’ arses.

I don’t know. Fuck that film, fuck Refn, fuck Gosling, fuck whoever allowed that film to be released. It’s shit

The best I can hope for is that Gosling and Refn had a good holiday in Thailand.

Finally got round to seeing Pacific Rim and thought it was excellent but I couldn't help but think it had its problems.

Unfortunately I can't help but feel that it was rushed, the first 15 minutes of the film could and probably should have been a film in its own right. I really want to see a film from the point when the Jäger programme stopped seeing its initial successes and the tide of the war turned against humanity ending just before the start of this one.

Secondly, I was a little annoyed at the visibility for the battles. Having them all at night created a sense of foreboding and drama but a day time battle just once to see these creatures going at each other in all their glory would have been spectacular.

Still, its a good film and despite some really annoying Dues Ex Machina (especially that one battle, 'HAI LOOK WE'VE GOT A SWORD THAT WE'VE NEVER MENTIONED BEFORE' its worth a watch.

Finally got around to watching it also. Agree with everything you have said. The best scenes are pretty much anything without Gosling in it. That is all.

The Big White with Mel Gibson.

A pretty decent independent dark comedy, definitely worth a watch.

I said pretty much anything, she makes that scene not him.

The Usual Suspects again. I liked it a lot more on this watch than the first time I watched it.

But

I really don't buy Gabriel Byrne as a serious bad ass criminal, that the police are desperate to send down and the underworld is terrified off.

And the real mystery is how Kevin Spacey saw the word Kobayshi on the coffee mug, without spilling coffee EVERYWHERE

Miller's Crossing is the only proof you need to know that Gabriel Byrne is awesome as a criminal.

Yeah that looks ace.

Had a bit of a film binge over the past 2 days, watched X-Men and X2, Gran Torino, Sexy Beast, Moon and Fight Club (again).

Moon was amazing, instantly one of my favourite films.

Watched The Love Bug, which I haven't seen since I was about ten. It's one of the greatest Disney live action films, just such fun. Probably going to watch the two sequels as well.

Also saw Basic, Session 9, War Horse and Eden. Basic is good, Session 9 and Eden are okay, and War Horse is a terrible pile of shit.

Just watched Only God Forgives. Fuck that shit. Fucking awful.

Cinematography and the score were fantastic, but the rest was just a big pile of dicks.
