Anyone fancy a one-way trip to Mars?

Found an article about a Dutch consortium called Mars One who intend to send 4 individuals on a one-way trip to Mars by 2023 and hope to finance the $6 billion project by making the manned-mission a reality TV show.

While I highly doubt that they'll be successful this has really caught my imagination. Do any of you think you'd be willing to make that trip?

One way? No of course not. I don't know how long it'd take, but even if it took like 2 years i'd be up for it. But one way? Don't be ridiculous

Their plan is to keep sending 4 people every 2 years and that by 2033 over 20 people will be living in a colony on Mars.

They've already had numerous volunteers. I guess it's a pioneering spirit and the desire to get your name in the history book that drives the volunteers for something like this.

And the desire to have your slow death televised?

I can't imagine anything more hellish than been stuck on a barren lump of rock millions of miles from home.

They plan to build a sustainable colony.

The colony can be sustainable is it likes, it's still going to be televised. Presumably they're going have a team of doctors on Mars and the supply of food isn't going to be endless.
If the topic was a group of scientists has found backing and wants to set up a base on Mars then that would be cool. But something about this doesn't sit well with me. Also, why Mars and not the Moon? Sounds like running before you can walk.

Presumably it's because Mars has far more useful minerals and has water locked in ice sheets.

This will never happen, anyway. If in 2023 we're watching a bunch of clowns fucking about on Mars then feel free to call me out on this.

It's also almost 200 times further away, the useful minerals aren't really going to be that useful when they're that far away. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea from a scientific view. I like the idea of sending a group of scientists there to see what's what but this just seems a bit odd.

I would go. To be honest it would be refreshing, knowing that there is no one there to stop you from acting out your deepest desires. There are no laws in space.

I wouldn't mind doing this if it was for a few years, but definitely not if it was for a lifetime. I guess most people feel the same, though. I might e-mail them and see what happens.
