Maybe Mads Hummels.
I just don't think playing Smalling and Evans together will reap rewards for Utd - this season the defence has been incredibly bad for a Ferguson team - he's normally got them well organised.

If I was to spend major money at Utd (I don't think its neccesary mainly due to City/Chelsea ineptitude) it would be at centre back though. A midfield enforcer wouldn't go a miss either.
I don't rate Phil Jones either - I think he'll move on to a club like Newcastle/Everton within a few years if he doesn't impress if given a chance in holding midfield.

As for United I think we would benefit with another center back, a shame Shawcross signed a new contract, as Poe said Hummels would be a good signing.

Evans has done very little wrong in the past 2 years to justify how under-rated he is.
He looks like a rabbit caught in headlights all the time, and he's prone to the occasional fuck up (which are becoming fewer and further between), but as ball playing centre-halves go I can't think of many in the League that have been better than him.
We've had problems with our defence, but they're actually fairly easily explained.
1. Evra's defending is laughable, it's not that he can't defend, it's that he doesn't bother. At least he's making up for it with goals at the other end, because he's never far from being the reason we've conceded them.
2. Ferdinand is not the player he once was, any player with pace can cause him problems and he's never been a physical player, this has been coupled with the fact that the injuries we've had have forced him alongside Evans who is not his ideal partner. So we've conceded a ridiculous number of headers, and conceded frequently from set pieces.
3. Until recently Carrick's form has been dodgy, and his midfield partners have been rotated massively meaning the midfields been giving us nothing defensively. His form has improved and with the exception of Newcastle (which is explained by point 4) we conceded one at Swansea (Evra/De Gea fuck up), and kept clean sheets against West Brom and Wigan, Cleverley alongside him consistently has helped. Players that can run instead of Scholes or Giggs or (sadly) Fletcher have stopped us being over run.
4. Injuries have stopped us from having a settled back four, Vidic has been out. He's come back, and Rafael's got injured. Ferguson's bizarre rotation of De Gea has not helped either, thankfully, that seems to have stopped.
Oddly, by far the two worst players of our back 5, Evra and Ferdinand, have been getting the most praise and the 3 players that have been broadly speaking excellent De Gea, Evans and especially Rafael have gone under the radar.
I don't think it's particularly a personnel issue, the most important area to improve is left back and, with Carrick in form, I actually think we're fine in midfield.
Jones is bizarre, when he came in and did really well to start with people went so OTT 'England Captain', 'Duncan Edwards mk 2' he was nailed on as England's best player for a generation and the only question was whether he would captain his country from centre back or midfield.
Since his injury when he's struggled a bit everyone thinks he's shit.
Is he gonna be an England regular? Probably, he already is tbh. Manchester United regular? He's a pretty good partner to everyone except Vidic imo, so if he can overtake Smalling and Evans in his development then it wouldn't surprise me. England captain? It's more likely than him joining Everton any time soon.
