It's in vogue to say referee's are getting worse each year but this season has really taken the piss. Surely something has to be done before it reaches catastrophic extremes...

A pretty good weekend for Everton. All the results went in our favour.

Arsenal and Chelsea won?

It pisses me off a bit that players spend half the game trying to cheat the referee, conning him into giving cards, diving and begging for corners and throw ins they know aren't and then on the other hand spend the other half getting outraged that the referee has got a decision wrong.

When you have a culture that encourages cheating, as it does in football, referees jobs are needlessly more difficult than they should be.

Also Martinez is a cock. Lot of respect lost for him for trying to defend McManaman.

Aye Martinez's post-match just made him look like a cunt.

In terms of the culture of cheating, it doesn't help. But it doesn't excuse anyone when a bona fide red card by anyone's standards is missed. There's an ex-ref on Sky saying the linesman is too far away to see it properly but that is fucking bollocks - he flies in and makes contact, and that is a poor challenge from the angle the camera was at. Plus it didn't stop the linesman in our game at Liverpool, who was a similar distance, flagging like mad when Coloccini went in on Suarez.

At least Martinez admitted it was a bad challenge - Dave Whelan has came out this morning and said there was "nothing wrong with it" and it was "clean as a whistle"

Prat.

Not having the bollocks about the ref being unsighted - the scream of pain was audible enough to be picked up by TV cameras. That should have triggered some sort of reaction itself.

You'd think Whelan would know better - he had his leg broke in the 1960 FA Cup final when he played for us because of a similar tackle from what I've heard, so he should know how dangerous tackles like that are.

There's no problem with people saying McManaman isn't usually that type of player, but to say "there was nothing wrong with it" and it was "as clean as a whistle"........yeah, that's pretty insane.

I don't think he meant to hurt Haidara as much as he has - but the tackle was still a disgrace.

What's wrong with Martinez? He's defended a kid on his debut and said that the club will make him apologize.

I didn't think Martinez was too bad, I could see how some of the things he said could come off badly. But I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that it was just poor wording/lost in translation kind off thing. Whelan's a complete idiot though!

Having said that I hope we don't try and sue. I don't think it was a tackle with malicious intentions, it's part of the sport that in the heat of the moment players make silly decisions and if you want to play that's a risk you take. It'll start a precedent that could head down a slippery slope.

Though obviously if it's intentional like the Keane-Haaland incident then sue away.

Michael Owen is retiring. BBC

Even though he has won plenty of trophies I can't help but think he never really fulfilled the immense potential he had in the early years of his career due to the amount of time he spent on the physio's table.

There is no doubt Michael Owen could have achieved much more had he not been so injury prone.

Aye, he could have been one of the very best.

Shame the last 5-6 years of his career have been the way they have.

Callum McManaman faces no further action for Haidara challenge

Wigan forward Callum McManaman will not face any further action from the Football Association over his challenge on Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara.
Haidara was taken off on a stretcher in the Latics' 2-1 win on Sunday after a McManaman tackle that was described as "awful" by Newcastle boss Alan Pardew.
More to follow.

Madness. Didn't Halsey even say that he was unsighted and would have acted if he had seen it?

Halsey said he would have sent him off it he'd seen it. Surely that merits a 3 game ban?

In the case of McManaman, it has been confirmed that at least one of the match officials saw the coming together, though not the full extent of the challenge. In these circumstances retrospective action cannot be taken

That is shit, the rules on retrospective punishments need to be changed

That's two potential leg-breakers (that I can remember) that haven't been retrospectively punished by FA, this year.

Lost all faith in the FA - McManaman should have been banned for 3 games at the very least.

One of the most absurd decisions I've ever witnessed.

If Wigan stay up they have cheated their way to Premier League survival.
