We better have not severed all ties with the lad, we should get a deal already sorted for him to sign in January.

If he says much other than 'I love Bilbao, I never thought about leaving' yadadada, I would be surprised. You know what they're like.

Herrera: "I don't feel manipulated. How can I feel manipulated by a club like MUFC? I appreciate their interest and what Bilbao value me at"

He said “I’m very flattered that a club like Manchester United made an offer for me. At no time did I have an agreement with Manchester United” (This means he didn’t accept to lower his wages)

“The people who turned up at the LFP headquarters were not representing me. I do not even know who they are”

“I was never told that Manchester United would pay the clause. I’m just telling you what happened and at no moment whatsoever did I even speak with Manchester United about a contract”

“Look, they made an offer. The president told them what they had to do; pay the clause.”

“I will continue to play for Athletic in the same manner that I have been doing since I first got here”

“I don’t feel bad that United dropped their interest. I’m just happy the champion of one of the biggest leagues wanted me.”

Pretty much word for word what you could have expected him to say.

Claims he never had an agreement and that he doesn't know if United spoke with his agent should be taken with a massive pinch of salt, obviously. At a press conference to reconcile himself with the fans he's hardly going to say 'Oh I love Bilbao, but yeah I was totally willing to drop €6m of my own cash to get out of here'.

Hope we get it done by January.

Fellaini will wear number 31.

Obviously means we're signing Ronaldo in January.

Well no, I agree with him that we have some explaining to do, but you'd have to be naive to think that we hadn't spoke to his agent or that the basic point of his press conference is to make up with the club and the fans.

I'd say the same thing if Rooney gave a conference saying that his agent had never spoken to Chelsea.

Another picture of Rooney's gash (fuck those words make me shudder)

I'm not really sure how it's relevant. Either we got some encouragement from his agent and it ended when Tata became the new boss and gave him reassurances about his place or we didn't and were trying our luck. No one really knows what made us think we could do it, so you can't really use it as an example.

Herrara was clearly a different kettle of fish. You can tell from his interview that he would have loved to have joined, and I don't believe for a second that we would even have attempted a complicated deal like this at the last second if we weren't 100% sure everything was fine on his end. Especially as in order to get this deal through we would have needed him to have paid his release clause.

You shouldn't attach too much to a players word when he's trying to curie favour with a team and fanbase that take attempts to leave notoriously badly. The last thing Herrera would want is to end up like Fernando Llorente, ostracised from the group and barely playing; its the specific reason that he was holding the press conference in the first place so of course he's going to bend the truth and tell the fans what they want to hear.

Do you think Rooney really wanted to do anything other than call the fans who turned up outside his house cunts when he signed his new contract in 2010 or did you actually believe him when he said they'd been 'brilliant' about it all?

This story just gets weirder.

United employ their own legal firm in Spain but did not mobilise it for one simple reason: no agreement was reached with Athletic Bilbao and they never had any intention of paying the full price when they valued Herrera £10m lower.

United, however, are angry about the suggestion, emanating from the Herrera farce, that a club of their stature and transfer experience somehow failed to understand the Spanish tax system – and bewildered, more than anything, that they are supposed to have employed three lawyers they say they had never heard of.

Bilbao insisted they wanted the full amount, no compromise was reached and that would have been it finished, in United's opinion, until the television pictures of Laffer's representatives led to the inaccurate impression that an agreement was close – building up hopes for a deal that had already failed.

So if they weren't representing us, nor were they representing Herrera just what the fuck were Laffer playing at?

He's a good defender, very strong, 6 foot 4, very accurate with his heading, scored a few goals from corners too, although doesn't like to get forward much he's not the fastest, either. He's only 20 too, so there's a lot of the game he still needs to learn, 4million? No, 2-2.5million would probably be a more realistic price.

Good enough to strengthen Man United? I always thought he was going to be one of Villa's next signings in the Lambert era, to be honest.

Do United really need to sign another young central defender? Surely, bringing in a quality mid-age defender hitting their peak would be more beneficial to replace Rio and eventually Vidic?
