Thiago Motta is one of the best up-and-coming coaches in the world of football and I’m very excited to talk about him, as he could be taking over my favorite team AC Milan this summer. So, with that in mind let’s look at what makes him so exciting and why he is currently the most exciting manager to come out of Italy for years.
Motta looks to employ a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 shape based on the opponents' setup. This change is mainly down to the way he looks to press his opponents. He will use a 4-2-3-1 when up against a back 4 and a 4-3-3 when against back 3s. Though his shape does change based on the opponent the team will almost certainly be setup as a 4-2-3-1 at the start and adjust shape in the game. This can be seen by him only using the 4-3-3 21% of the time this season compared to the whopping 61% usage of the 4-2-3-1.
Besides formations the 3 main things to know about Thiago Motta’s play, the biggest things to know are his emphasis on build-up play, vertical passing, and high pressing. These are the 3 main things I want to focus on in this video as I feel without these ideas you will not properly be able to recreate his style of play.
