Luton heavily relies on the 2 up front (Moris and Adebayo) Adebayo is the target man while Morris makes runs in behind. These are important roles for the 2 but they each have a key responsibility when it comes to possession. Both strikers look to the half-space to their advantage when Luton is in possession. As the team looks to build down the wings either striker will drop into the midfield line to create a progressive passing option for the player in possession. This forces the opposition either to cover the player and allow Luton to play backward and retain possession or Luton to get it to the stirrer and bypass the press and combine down the wing with an overload. Whichever striker is closer to the ball will be the one who drops in.
This is crucial to Luton’s game plan as they look to exploit the wide spaces and get crossed into the box so having a striker drop in and pull the defense forward to create space for the wingback to get into is very important. On top of dropping in both strikers will also stay high in the half spaces when the ball is at the feet of the CB as the 2 strikers are looking for longballs either to feet or over the top.
Bell on the left of the back three, and Gabe (Gabriel) Osho or Reece Burke on the right, gave us the ability to build up and attack down the sides, or play diagonals, on top of being able to go into the two forwards. This allows for Luton to also maintain a strong defense shape and try for what is a quite low-risk attack as it's just 2 players up top trying to score. Though it is a very deadly attack for Luton. The strikers won’t always even try to flick it behind as they will also target the 10 with knockdowns as well.
Crossing is crucial for Luton. Even though they launch Long balls quite centrally the team is always looking to get someone down the wing so they can get crosses into the box. This is because they look to heavily load the box with bodies. You will see both strikers and the 10 in the box as well as he opposite wingback and even another CM at times though they most sit on the edge looking to gather up any loose balls.
In defense, Luton dop into a 5-3-2 shape though this isn’t just sitting deep and absorbing pressure. Luton has been given a 5-second rule by Edwards. He encourages his team to counter-press quickly to win the ball back. (They were third for PPDA in the Championship in 22/23). Luton is happy to apply pressure early and high up with any CB looking to close down the striker higher up when he is targeted and WBs or CMs looking to close down progressive passing lanes as soon as possible.
