Welcome to FMTV! FMTV is a new project aimed at helping people discover FM Content on YouTube. If you're a fan of FM use the links to find content organised in handy categories. Bosz is a coach who is very willing to adapt. He is happy to change his style to fit his team and get the best out of his players wherever he is. However, he does have a few key rules that he follows regardless of where he is managing.
He looks to maximize possession, by letting players have the ball at their feet and giving them the freedom to dribble and attempt things that can be risky but offer a high reward. He also encourages lots of off-ball movement from his players allowing wingers to tuck inside thanks to an overlapping fullback or have a winger stay wide due to a midfielder making a run into the half-space. This leads to a very fluid system in possession but once that allows his players to feel comfortable as they are asked to do what they are best at in the positions they are most comfortable in.
This leads to the issue of his team having a very fluid shape and one that has not always been the same this season. He has used 3 formations this season with the 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 being the most common with 16 and 11 uses respectively. Though regardless of these shapes the principles above stay the same. Though regardless of the starting formation the team mainly looks to resemble a 2-3-2-3 shape in buildup and possession at most times. This also usually means the team will shift to the side of the ball and the lines of 3 will be 1 central player and the other 2 hugging the touchline. This means that the lines of 2 are much more central and tend to play in those gaps left by the lines of 3.
The other thing that is similar when the shape changes is the counter-pressing. Bosz forces his player to have a 5-second rule to win the ball back. This allows the team to make these mistakes and take those risks as they will always be looking to win the ball back quickly and meaning once they win the ball the players are willing to make something out of the disorganization since they are used to playing in a very fluid shape.
The team will also look to normally high press in general looking to win the ball back high up the pitch to shorten their distance to the goal and allow them to take chances and make mistakes in the opposition’s half and not their own.
Finally, when it comes to building out from the back, they will look to play short passes from the back with the LCB pushing out wider and almost being the LB and the GK shifting over a little so the back 4 is mainly made up of the GK, RB, RCB, and LCB which gives PSV an overload at most times. As well as making their buildup shape a 3-4-1-3. If the team does not feel they can beat the press the ball is usually played back to the GK before he attempts a long ball out to the right wing for the RW.
