Vasco primarily uses a 4-1-4-1 or 4-3-3 formation in their gameplay, with the front three players strategically positioned inside the box to receive crosses. The left-back is confident in crossing from wide positions, while the team adopts a compact defense, with their full-backs tucking in heavily. This approach enables the team to press outside and use the sideline to their advantage.
During the buildout, the team sets up in a 3-4-3 formation, with three players positioned in and around the box, and four along the closer edge of the midfield circle. The front three players are lined up on the opposite side of the midfield circle, and the highest three players are clubbed together. The number 9 player looks to receive a long ball before passing it down to one of the two wingers around him, after a short pass to one of the defenders playing short.
When the team wins the ball, they counter very quickly, with the left-back constantly moving forward and crossing the ball. The full backs also tend to get high and wide in possession. In possession, the front three players sit very narrowly, no wider than the width of the box, while the full backs go high and wide to offer support. The remaining five players include two center-backs who stay high, the central midfielder in the middle, higher than the rest, and the other two midfielders who act as wider link players for the center-backs and full-backs.
When the ball goes down one wing, the winger on that side pulls wide to help in possession, allowing for overlaps by the full-back. The two central midfielders sit very deep, disconnected from the play, and are mainly used as wide-link players. The team heavily uses the wings to attack, looking to create overloads with the wide central midfielders as deep support, and the full-back and winger as the two main players.
The team presses very aggressively on buildout, usually in a 4-2-1-3 shape, forcing the ball wide and winning it against the sideline. They also press heavily, close down players, and are super aggressive in the tackle. Although the team looks to play out of the back, they are not the best in possession. The goalkeeper doesn't make many passes besides easy short ones or long ones forward.
