I can see why the ref showed a red but it's a silly red to show.

Have you ever tried leaving the Emirates along with 60,000 others?

When I went to the Emirates the problem was more in actually getting there as the Piccadilly Line had been shut after someone got pushed on the track - that and the fact it took ages to find any stop (I think I wound up at Finsbury Park station) on the way out.

I do see your point but there do seem to be a lot of early departures at the Emirates in games. I dunno...

I disagree with this opinion, People get mad when they see fans leaving early because their team is losing. If you go to football regularly it's not a novelty anymore, you don't hang around in the stadium after a game just high fiving dudes. If Leeds are losing I'll piss off a couple of minutes early to avoid the crush afterwards. Having been to the Emirates a few times I can tell you it's a fucking cunt getting out of there. They make you queue all the way down the street just to get into Highbury tube, and that's after the death trawl over the bridge. 2-0 down with eight minutes to go? I'd be out of there in a flash.

Less opinion, more observation - some fans will always leave early but it just seems to be Arsenal fans are quicker out than others. Maybe the fact the stadium is painful to get to and out of is the main issue, which is something to look forward to when I go to see concerts there this summer.

Surely Arsenal fans have a right to be aggrieved given the £63 away end tickets City have paid for are the joint-cheapest of the entire stadium.

Good spot by the referee, even if the red was a tad harsh.

Don't think I've seen a more jammy penalty save, mind

How many City fans ended up going? Did Arsenal lower the price?

I think the figure is about 2,000, but tbh the only real way to know for sure is to count them all. And who can be arsed with that... as for the price, the unsold tickets were all sold to Arsenal supporters.

I saw the Rodriguez penalty on a site just now and there was a foul by Guzan on Puncheon that should've been a peno, which might have been what it was awarded for. But the actual Rodriguez offence the whistle blew at was possibly the worst dive ever - there's a shot of the striker seeming mystified the penalty was awarded.

Bunn made a really good save from Obertan. And Norwich only had two attacks of note. Stops the rot or whatever.

Aye I didn't hear much in the way of attacks from them either. Didn't watch it but tbh it sounds like I didn't miss a great display from either side... better that than the last minute defeat I was half-expecting, mind.

Don't think I recall any mention of the Norwich keeper being troubled in any way, shape or form by our attacks today... not beating Reading is unthinkable but seemingly inevitable given our current ineptitude.

Not that beating Reading is gonna be easy given today's heroics.

We already needed one new centre half (preferably two), and now with this needless hammer-blow, assuming it actually happens, we're gonna need two (preferably three) new centre halves.

Am I confident in that actually happening? Fuck no.

With any luck they'll still be in this state when we come to Villa in 3 weeks, not least given I'm actually planning on going.

Bradford-Villa was amazing - don't think I've seen such a dismantling before.

Wasn't Dean Saunders in charge of that faintly comical 'experiment' Doncaster did when they let agent Willie McKay bring in his stooges?

It'd be unlikely for him to try it again at Wolves though... right?

If you're going to state meaningless facts, you'd think the least you could do is get them right. You could also say "there are only 6 Premier League teams in the next round" but you wouldn't because that's stupid. I don't know why that annoyed me.

Have the BBC relegated us already?

Yeah i agree NUFC have way too much quality in the best 11 to go down if Cabaye didn't get injured you'd be comfortably in the top half

We have a great first 11 but our back-up options are not in the same league, and we've been relying on them nearly all season long.

I don't know if it's just the extraordinary pessimism that I am capable of but it's a worrying situation. Obviously it didn't help that in the first part of the season we played a hoofball system that ignored Cabaye completely, but without him we seem to be going to pot.

With any luck this should be the nadir and things can only get better from now. But we need players to come in as well as players to recover from injury (and not try to rush them back in like we did with Ben Arfa) and I'm not quite so sure Ashley will be as interested in bolstering the ranks. But who knows - a win at Norwich would certainly be a good start and it doesn't feel like an impossible feat if Colo, Cabaye and Cisse return as is rumoured.

I think that you winger you got will do a lot to help, Obertan was lazy was fuck. When someone who's usually picked for his pace is being outrun by a 32 year old Wayne Bridge then somethings going wrong. What happened last season won't happen though. You need to focus on not getting dragged into a relegation battle and then rebuild in the summer.

And as I said before, the contact was minimal but it was contact. Whether it was a foul or not is hard to say, but from where I was it looked like he caught him in the thigh, Lopez lost balance and fell over, the referee blew the whistle and ran to Ameobi reaching for his pocket and then Lopez rolled along on the floor doing whatever while everyone else was looking at the ref.

The return of Ben Arfa should help but even something as simple as starting Marveux or Ferguson could well have been a better choice. Which is somewhat ironic as Obertan was one of the few NUFC players who at least made an effort - Sammy Ameobi kept falling over, Shola was useless even before his dodgy red and our defence was as rotten as ever.

The biggest priority is making sure we won't go down but to do that we need players - either out of the treatment room or from Ashley dipping in his pockets. But I wonder if Ashley is willing to stump up the cash.

Eh. It wasn't really a dive. He exaggerated the fuck out of it, but it was still a foul. The referee was right next to tackle and had no hesitation in booking him. Ameobi was late, approached him from behind and lazily tackled him. Didn't get the ball. Booking. A spaniards rolls.
Newcastle has no chance though. They couldn't work it into the box so just started taking potshots. Quite why Obertan is allowed to play for a Premier League side I'm not sure. Bigirimana was the only played who seemed to be pulling his weight. Not sure what Sami Ameobi brought to the table other than looking awkward on the ball and falling over.
I'm worried about Newcastle. I like them as a team but without Ba I can't see where their goals are going to come from. I understand they weren't playing a full team, but those players did not give a fuck and they certainly weren't playing as a team. Need to play out the season and go shopping in the summer.

But yeah, Bridge was on top form. CMS was active though actually Newcastle did do a decent job of closing him down in the first half. Orlandi impressed me with his composure. Hoskins took his goal well and did well to get into that position and ball for that goal played by Lopez was great. Bridcutt and El-Abd were solid. Barnes was completely anonymous again. A good performance though all in all. Managed to see most of the balls against a Premier League side. Kept calm and made them play at our own pace which is what we need to be doing. Happy.

The contact was minimal and David Lopez made a meal of it. Not quite as bizarre as the first yellow given the referee needed eyes in the back of his head to see it.

But as has been previously established, we were fucking terrible - not since the game where Michael Owen et all didn't give a fuck as we sunk into the Championship have we put out such a painful and embarrassing performance. If it didn't ram home to Ashley that our squad as a whole is not good enough to replicate last season then simply nothing will.

Be interesting to see what happens if, as expected, Hughton gets one over us next week.

If this is anything to go by, this is going to be a league fixture next season.

I don't care if that was a dive (which it was) we never looked like scoring before the red card, and now we certainly don't

I think Newcastle really could go down at this rate- how many tough games have they got left?

Our run-in consists of:
Norwich (a)
Reading (h)
Villa (a)
Chelsea (h)
Spurs (a)
Southampton (h)
Swansea (a)
Stoke (h)
Wigan (a)
Manchester City (a)
Fulham (h)
Sunderland (h)
West Brom (a)
Liverpool (h)
West Ham (a)
QPR (a)
Arsenal (h)

With the exception of Chelsea and Spurs, we have four games coming up where we have to get something. Trips to Wigan and QPR will also be big ones.

Harper/Elliot; Tavernier, Perch, Williamson, Ferguson; Anita, Abeid; Obertan, Marveaux, Sameobi, Shola.

Reckon it'll be something like that tomorrow.
Harper didn't travel, so that with Elliott is something we can probably expect.

There's not many reasons to be cheerful...

I'd love it if we gave it a go but yes we don't really have the squad to simultaneously sustain FA Cup and Europa League runs.

I mean, back in 2004/05 (ironically with Souness) we got to the FA Cup semis and UEFA Cup quarters, which added another 17 games to our season, which meant our league position suffered somewhat given we came over the line in 14th, and then the season truly collapsed when we ran out of players to sustain all three fronts. Our squad, by contrast is barely able to sustain two fronts, nevermind three.

He is a fairly good pundit, which tbh amazes me given that at Newcastle he was a terrible manager.

The odds really are stacked against us tomorrow... Coloccini and Cisse had "minor knocks" and did not travel, Bigirimana is a doubt, Debuchy joined too late to feature, Tiote's gone to Africa, Ba's gone to Chelsea, and of course the two Taylors, Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Simpson and Vuckic are amongst those still injured.
