Would that really be a bad thing? He's annoyingly inconsistent and publicly said he wanted to leave three times in January.

Don't think it does, but the linesman's got a tough decision to make. Too many bodies and ends up guessing, mind.

Drew with Brighton last night. Fair result. We were awful first half and a goal gown after 18 seconds. God only knows how they didn't add to it, but they didn't. And in the second half we came out, got a deserved equaliser and pushed for a winner. Both sides had good spells, both sides will be disappointed they didn't make more of them.

I did offer the caveat that my eyesight is terrible if that's anything. But it does look over fully at one point, although if I was a linesman in a standard position, there is no way I could be 100% sure it was over.

Thauvin in, with a deal costing £13million and allowing Remy Cabella to move to Marseille on a season-long loan deal. Shame Cabella didn't work out, but them's the breaks I guess. Hopefully Thauvin works in his wide-role.

Now, as argued (and hopefully) for a full back. Although not to look a gift horse in the mouth - still around £50million in players bought with nobody out.

It does fully go over the line (I think, although I am partially sighted and overdue for an eye-test) but its an absurd goal.

Multiple sources claiming Thauvin is close for a £12million deal.

To be fair, I felt we needed more width. But I also still think we need at least two more defenders. Still, various sources have said the club wants three more in buy August 31st. So that's 1/3rd of the way there.

Jesus christ. Pipe the fuck down.

I'm perfectly aware there's still a maximum of 108 points to fight for and titles aren't won on round two. But its hardly an inspiring beginning nevertheless.

Haven't seen Mitrovic's yellow as MOTD cut it (who knows why).

In terms of yesterday, its too easy to slag off Janmaat for his performance, but he was shite even before his idiotic dismissal. No out-and-out back-up/competition in that position is clearly going to be a problem. I only saw the first 50 or so minutes (browser problems made it barely watchable) but also agreed the midfield didn't function properly at any point, and it sounded even more disjointed when Sissoko limped off, while I don't know if Wijnaldum and Anita actually did anything. The stats show we only had a third of possession in the entire game and managed 4 shots all game, and clearly we don't have the players to do anything productive with that.

Obviously still 36 games to go, but bit worrying the away day malaise and ill discipline from the last year and a half hasn't subsided yet.
Sunderland have already spent quite a bit though.

Fletcher, Defoe, Rodwell, Cattermole, M'Vila, Lens, Johnson, Giaccherini and possibly Alvarez too. All expensive signings.

Sunderland is a weird one. They've signed 5 players this summer (well, four + Coates) on big wages and a couple of big fees but arguably needed to sign a whole new squad, and I think Dick Advocaat wanted substantially more than what he's got. God knows they've still got some colossal duffers, especially in defence.

The weird thing is how many of their fans already seem resigned to being relegated, based on both these two games and an appalling pre-season.

There's a big discipline issue. 5 reds in 12 games, more reds than anyone else in the last 2/3 seasons, and that's before mentioning Mitrovic.

Elsewhere, Spurs have thrown away a 2-0 lead at home to Stoke, Norwich have been wiping the floor with Sunderland, and Leicester are beating West Ham.

Jesus wept de Jong is injured again.

I don't think there's been a 180 on Sissoko out-wide overnight, although a number of the skills kinda crossover. But seeing as we've had 3 years of on-off trying Sissoko in a wide position, it makes sense that eventually, he'd figure out how the fuck he's playing there. Well, maybe. Been only one game so far so we'll see how it goes.

None have progressed the way they should have tbf.

Whether that was due to the poor coaching team we've had or just not actually being that good who knows?

We're still in need of 3 quality signings so hopefully this is making room for them. We've had a good start to the window but it'll mean nothing if we don't get the rest.

Probably a bit of both tbf. Abeid and Bigi showed flashes of it but never really played enough. GB definitely stalled after being decent in patches in 12/13, while Abeid was alright at the start of last season and poor in the second half. Although that description can be used for a lot of our team.

And yeah we still need a few improvements. I still think we could use an extra full-back (maybe one that can play both RB/LB as a back-up to Janmaat), although I'm not overly certain Charlie Austin is still a requirement. Even if the media still seems to think we want him, after rumouring it for about 60000 years.

Mike Williamson told to find a new club

What a day to be alive.

Mail claims that Gouffran, Abeid, Vuckic and Bigirimana can also leave. There's also a claim we've approached Brighton about a swap deal with Lewis Dunk moving to the North East.

Bit of a shame about MA, HV and GB, who coud've been decent growers in another world. Not sure about Dunk, but he's meant to be alright and does score a few.

We sold Boumsong to the best team in Italy who was then sold to the best team in France. And we finished higher last year, then we did when we had Yanga

I thought when we sold Juve Boumsong they'd just been relegated for their role in Calciopoli, he then barely played, and it took him to finding Panathanikos to actually be a coherent defender. Maybe. Could be crossing my wires there.

Meanwhile, a Chronicle poll said over 70% of surveyed want Joey Barton back after a deal to take him to West Ham fell through. Hmmmmm. Not sure about that one. Also not sure about one or two Tweeters implying we should re-sign Jose Enrique, given he's spent most of his time at Liverpool rusting in their reserves.

Signed for a total of 8.5million Euros, being sold for 9 despite being one of Roma's best defenders last season (apparently - didn't watch them much) and scoring the goal that got them into the Champions League... bit odd that one.

Draw seems a fair enough result.

I though Haidara actually really improved in the second half, looked genuinely good, and had Tadic in his pocket. Wijnaldum looked good, Mbemba looked incredible. and overall it was a good performance.

McClaren seemed incredibly lucky mind, his subs were woeful and Mitrovic looked a donkey.

It's great saying how you love to kick defenders, but its no good kicking a full back and nearly getting yourself sent off, and then not winning a first ball, and being in Fonte's pocket.

If Newcastle still have money to spend. Think Shane Long should maybe be the one to go for.

Obertan - Still great!!!!

I do think Mitrovic needs time to adjust, but this was a pretty anonymous debut after his ridiculous kicking. Also wasn't convinced by Tiote or Coloccini, although neither have really had a pre-season.

Do think a new forward wouldn't be the worst idea, but Shane Long is not someone I'm always convinced by, and would probably be a club record fee. Although presumably if we signed him it would stop him fecking scoring against us. I do think we need a new defender or two, although Mbemba had an excellent debut.

Newcastle game was entertaining. 2-2 seemed fair - we looked better first half, but they were better in the second. Also not convinced by Haidara defensively, and the team shape seemed better with Anita than with Tiote. Also impressive that Mitrovic's first action was a heavy duty challenge on a player coming back from a long-term injury.

Reece Oxford sounded like had an awesome game. Arsenal, less so.

Aye that Channel 5 show was crap. I don't think I hate it as much as others do, but showing the games in a majorly jumbled order is a pretty unforgivable sin. I also hate the look of the programme - the set looks poor and the actual graphics look like they were done on the cheap.

Surprised you've not let him stay at Northampton for the season on loan, don't see him getting into you starting 11 anytime soon.

Presumably he'll be loaned out to a League One side at some point like Adam Armstrong has been.

I think City need a new striker with Jovetic and Dzeko leaving. Not sure who though, although Sterling through the middle didn't work at Liverpool so fuck knows why that might be an option.

Elsewhere, Palace close to signing Bakary Sako, who could be good as he's a player with Prem qualities. Meanwhile, Leroy Fer has failed a medical at Sunderland. Impressive. Although given his luck in England so far, it means the Mackems have a better chance of staying up already.

Chelsea, Arsenal, City, Man United for the top 4 in that order I think.

Think Villa will be better than people are predicting, and think Sunderland might finally have a season of relative security and won't be battling relegation on the last day.

Unsure how Spurs and Southampton will do - but I don't think we'll finish any higher than 12th.

Not sure the Pardew love in will continue too, I think they'll struggle now he's got some good players which he can't manage.

I think 10th-13th is where we'll end up. Would be higher if we had bought 2 more defenders and sold certain useless lumps. Still, its a gradual process.
