I thought Southampton were getting rid of Osvaldo because the other players and their coaches thought he was a twat for decking Jose Fonte in training the other day.

I hadn't actually seen those penalties until the .gifs on the previous page but fucking hell they were closer to finding the net at the Etihad.

Hasn't he not been sacked from almost every club he's managed, bar Macclesfield?

I think he was poached by Blackburn when he left MK Dons the first time, and then resigned the second time.

Given West Ham now need nine to win, does anyone mad enough to make that bit win the keys to the Royal Mint?

Is it just me or has absolutely fuck all happened in this transfer window?

Not exactly fuck all but its been very quiet. Its importance has been way over-hyped this year given nobody seems arsed.

Rafael's challenge was similar to one that Debuchy was sent off for during our defeat at West Brom, and on that occasion he didn't touch the opponent but still got dismissed.

He probably took pity on the fact Vidic had received a harshish red earlier, and the fact MUFC were terrible again.

I don't think any of our fans thought we would get Champions League, nevermind have a shot at the title.

Good win today though. Maybe a late shot at a Europe place is still a possibility.

So we're facing a strikeforce of Carroll and Carlton Cole tomorrow then... that should be manageable. So we'll probably lose.

I'm intrigued by what'll happen if they have no Cole or Traore for Saturday - do they risk Carroll for a whole 90?

With only one fit CB as well, it basically means it may end up being like the Glenn Roeder-era Newcastle, with midfielders having to fill in all over the place.

No chance. He's been injured for ages.

Has he actually played in the last few months?

I know he scored v Wigan in the COC and played against us in the same tournament but aside from then... ?

Nasri tweeted that he will be out for around 8 weeks.

It could've been worse so its a fair relief for him. Looked extremely serious when he was taken off - a potential out-of-the-World-Cup one.

Chance for Jovetic, perhaps?

Jonas has just tweeted his goodbyes

Huge player for us not only in the Championship but the season we came back up and the season we finished 5th - some huge shifts he's put in for us. Shame he's been poor for a year and a bit but still one of my favourite players.

Rumours are he's off to Norwich - hope he has a great end to his career.

Sky sources are saying a Norwich deal is close.

What about NADS? They need to sign someone with a surname beginning with O, then we'd have the perfect acronym.

Both would certainly work.

All the back pages appear to lead on the "fucking old cunt" diatribe. Its perplexing really given that there was less fuss when the Newcastle and Southampton benches had a fight between one another.

I've noticed a few Toon fans on Twitter bringing up the incident a few years back when an idiotic de Jong tackle that didn't even get a free-kick against it broke Ben Arfa's leg into three pieces. Not sure what I think of that argument, mind...

As for this one, good goal by Charlie Adam. Decent game as well.

In all fairness, that frustration should really have been curbed at half time. Pardew should've settled them down and told them to play like they were leading up to the goal, instead it seemed he riled them up further (probably just to show more passion, fight for every ball harder etc. but it backfired in the end really). Everything is clearer in hindsight though obviously.

Also, apparently Pardew was accusing Nasri of playacting after that challenge by Mbiwa, lovely chap

Its probably accurate that cooler heads may have yielded the equaliser, or at least a more measured path towards one. Sometimes injustice and aggravation at this can work as the required kick up the arse but its probably what manifested itself in the series of unnecessary fouls during the second half.

The similar mindset is also probably why Nasri was accused of playacting. Obviously he was not given how his afternoon ended, but one can't help but do something stupid while pissed off.

I think frustration at not being level played into City's hands by the end, because it led to us losing focus and also led to a number of fairly needless and dumb tackles (especially the MYM one). Though we really should've taken our opportunities.

It also reinforces the need for an additional winger.

Can we say the decisions have evened out now? Cabaye (maybe), and Mbiwa lucky to be on the pitch

Not really - the only real evening out incident would be a soft goal in our favour.

Once that first incident occurred, the game became immediately prime for a referee horror-show, which it duly has been. In a normal game, Cabaye would certainly have gone by now.

Cabaye should have had a second yellow there but the referee is clearly bottling it.

The referee's behaviour led to the first yellow in any case. I suppose it walked the line but if he had given a second yellow there probably would've been a minor riot.

Steven Taylor and Jonas were the guys I was referring to. I understand that rage at Shola is always going to happen and I can understand why fans don't like Obertan (booing him is fucking shocking though).

It's more the randomness element. Gouffran is loved for his work rate, Jonas is hated for it. Steven Taylor as been generally liked for the past decade, than has suddenly jerked into being a hated joke who isn't good enough. Williamson has went from that to first name on the team sheet in 6 months or so.

The Willo/Taylor swap I think is because Taylor's contribution so far this season has been to be sent off, while Williamson has put in performances during our best runs. Last season was the inverse - Williamson was a liability while Taylor looked more convincing. That's just the way football is, and fans seem to react swiftly and accordingly.

The Jonas/Gouffran element is more simple - Gouffran knows how to score or cross, while Jonas isn't as convincing. In any case I thought he was leaving this month.

Although Steven Taylor and Shola are getting it in the neck on fansites, I'd be surprised if Obertan isn't the main target of fan irritation.

Not that his playing style does anything to avoid ridicule...

Although buses are still being provided by Sunderland and they say it will be the easiest way to the club, the restriction of this mode of travel being the mandatory way to go to the game has been lifted.

The two teams have also put out the following joint statement...

Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC are surprised and disappointed with the statement issued yesterday by Northumbria Police in which the force claims that the police cannot direct changes to kick-off times for the clubs' fixtures, referring in particular to the derby games.

Over a number of years both clubs have made repeated representations to Northumbria Police to try and reach agreement over kick-off times to enable a traditional 3pm kick-off or later to enable broadcasters to give the game consideration in the majority of their time slots for live coverage.

Police forces up and down the country have been able to police high-profile derby matches for years, including most recently the first Welsh derby in the Premier League, Cardiff v Swansea, on Sunday 3rd November at 4:00pm, Arsenal v Tottenham at 5:15pm on Saturday 4th January, and Manchester City v Manchester United on Sunday 22nd September at 4:00pm.

In recent years Northumbria Police have rejected every request made by the clubs for later kick-off slots including Saturday 5:30pm, Sunday 4:00pm and Monday 8:00pm.

Both clubs have evidence in the form of considerable written correspondence between Northumbria Police, the Premier League and the clubs which contradicts their statement of yesterday. Indeed that correspondence has stated that Northumbria Police would not be prepared to police the evening fixtures requested previously, as well as their confirmation to the Premier League in writing in January 2013 that the force would not support derby matches with kick-off times later than 1:30pm.

For Northumbria Police therefore to issue a statement stating that they do not direct changes to kick-off times is quite frankly false and absurd - and conflicts with the respectful and responsible manner in which both Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC have engaged with the police over many years with regard to the derby fixture.

In light of Northumbria Police's latest statement, Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC will now inform the Premier League that all future fixtures between the two clubs will be available for kick-off times to suit the clubs, the League and their broadcast partners, if applicable, and will expect Northumbria Police to police these games, especially given the considerable costs both clubs incur for such special police services.

After considering the police position, Sunderland AFC will be withdrawing the terms and conditions of ticket sales, which previously stated that all supporters must attend the game on official transport. The arrangements to provide complimentary buses and supporters branch transport will remain in place and Sunderland AFC advises fans that this is the safest method of travel to St James’ Park.
