It has been revealed that former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recommended his eventual successor David Moyes to the Old Trafford owners after notifying them of his decision to retire a fortnight ago.
The Manchester United hierarchy asked Sir Alex Ferguson who he would appoint as his successor at Old Trafford if the decision was his to make and then appointed the man recommended according to reports.
Everton manager David Moyes was appointed as the new Manchester United boss three days ago after Ferguson's recommendation and the 49 year old has been handed a six year contract at Old Trafford.
He consistently kept Everton in the top half of the Premier League, often challenging for European football, whilst spending little in comparison with other clubs and becomes just the 19th manager at Old Trafford.
Moyes will take charge of his first competitive fixture as Manchester United boss on the opening day of the Premier League season when they face current champions and fierce rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand says he's disappointed to see Sir Alex Ferguson retire but has revealed he's also excited about the new era that's to come under new manager David Moyes.
The appointment of David Moyes as the new Manchester United manager and successor to Sir Alex Ferguson has ushered in a quicker than expected new era at Old Trafford. Nobody knew that United's longest serving manager was contemplating retirement and when the announcement was made it was shocking for many.
The end of one era will see the beginning of another and defender Rio Ferdinand says he's excited about the future under Moyes who was handed a six year contract on Tuesday by the Manchester United board.
"All good things come to an end I guess, but it's still a sad time for the club and disappointing that Sir Alex is retiring. For a lot of United fans he's the only manager they've known, that's unheard of in football really and it'll probably never happen again. What he's achieved in the game is unbelievable and it's very unlikely that anybody else will match that, it's truly remarkable," said the defender.
"In saying that with the end of one era another begins and it's going to be very exciting to work with David Moyes. He's done a terrific job at Everton and he deserves this chance. The best thing about this is that the club has sorted it out very quickly, it hasn't dragged on and become a media circus," added Ferdinand.
Ferdinand joined Manchester United back in 2002 from rivals Leeds United in a deal worth £29 million.
The 33 year old has gone on to become a key member of the defence making 270 Premier League appearances for United and has developed a formidable centre back partnership with Nemanja Vidić.
Ferdinand currently has one year remaining on his £110,000 a week contract at Old Trafford.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes the appointment of David Moyes to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager is the right one and will bring with it continuity which will help the club remain successful.
Gary Neville believes the Manchester United board have got it right in appointing Everton manager David Moyes as the successor to the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson. The 49 year old Scot was named yesterday as the new Manchester United manager and Neville believes the appointment of Moyes offers continuity.
"I think with David Moyes he's quite similar to Sir Alex Ferguson, he wants his team to work hard, show character, understand the history of the club and connect with the people they're representing each time they play football. Everton are quite family friendly, just like Manchester United," said Neville.
"Personally I think it's a great appointment, the right appointment and it offers long term continuity. I think with David Moyes you've a manager who could potentially stay at Old Trafford for the rest of his career, he'll respect the history of the club and he's shown at Everton he's more than happy to give younger players the chance if he believes they're ready," added the former England international.
Neville, 37, who now works as a football pundit for Sky Sports made 602 appearances for Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. In his time at Old Trafford the right back won numerous trophies which included eight Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns, three FA Cups and two Capital One Cups.
The 37 year old was capped on 85 occasions by England during his successful career.

José Mourinho has ignored numerous questions linking him with a possible move to Manchester United following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement and says he's only concentrating on footballing matters at Real Madrid.
Many believe that only José Mourinho has what it takes to replace legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after he choose to retire and given Mourinho's success in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain it's hard to argue that the former FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and current Real Madrid manager wouldn't be a perfect fit for the Old Trafford dugout, especially given the shadow Ferguson will leave behind.
Mourinho, 49, has won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, whilst two UEFA Champions League triumphs have accompanied those league titles, his most recent coming at Inter Milan when the Nerazzurri completed a treble, his ability to win silverware arguably as good as Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Real Madrid manager constantly avoided questions today at a press conference about his future, Mourinho simply stating that he was concentrating only on footballing matters at the Bernabéu.
Rumours in the media on Wednesday from a source within Manchester United revealed that the board haven't thought about approaching the Real Madrid manager due to fears he wouldn't respect the clubs history, culture and youth policy. According to the same source Everton manager David Moyes is the favourite to succeed Ferguson and could be appointed within days should a deal be reached.
Some have argued however that Moyes hasn't won any silverware whilst at Goodison Park and may struggle under the pressure at Old Trafford. He has however consistently kept Everton in the top half of the Premier League, often challenging for European football, whilst spending little in comparison with other clubs.

Everton manager David Moyes, not José Mourinho, is currently the favourite to replace retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson according to a source inside the Old Trafford club.
If various tabloid newspapers are to be believed then Manchester United will soon appoint Everton manager David Moyes as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson after the 70 year old announced his retirement last week.
The 49 year old is in the final year of his contract at Goodison Park and is reportedly keen to take on the challenge of replacing Ferguson who is the most successful manager in British football.
Real Madrid boss José Mourinho was the early favourite to be named the new Manchester United manager but a source from inside Old Trafford said the former Chelsea manager didn't appeal to the Glazer owners as much as Moyes who they believe is more likely to respect the clubs history, culture and youth policy.
"Manchester United will confirm their new manager soon and it won't be José Mourinho," said the source.
"David Moyes is the favourite, he's the guy they want and the deal will get done unless for some reason he decides he doesn't want to manage Manchester United. The owners don't think Mourinho will respect the history of the club and that's very important to them, so really from the day Sir Alex Ferguson said he was retiring it's never been likely he'd be appointed, I don't think he's even been approached," added the source.
Moyes was appointed Everton boss back in March 2002 and has been praised for keeping the club in the top half of the Premier League, often challenging for European football, whilst spending little in comparison with other clubs. Should the 49 year old Scot leave Goodison Park for Old Trafford it's expected that Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright will look to appoint Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martínez.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidić says retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson was and always will be the best manager football has ever seen following the Scots shock decision to retire last week.
Manchester United players and fans are still in shock after manager Sir Alex Ferguson announced his intention to retire with immediate effect from his role. Tributes have been pouring in from various people for the Scot with the likes of Arsène Wenger and David Beckham praising the 70 year olds achievements.
United captain Nemanja Vidić has now joined that list after he called the Scot the best manager in football.
"Sir Alex Ferguson has achieved so much in football and it's disappointing that he's retiring," stated Vidić.
"However the club is left in a tremendous position due to the managers ability and we'll continue to win trophies as expected thanks to the managers tremendous planning. I've never seen a manager like him in all my years playing football and am convinced he's one of a kind," added the former Serbian international.
"His work ethic and passion has turned Manchester United into the biggest club in the world. There have been challenges from different teams during my time here and even when we bad moments the manager always kept us motivated to bounce back, something this club has done time and time again."
"For me he's the best manager football has ever seen and that'll never change," said Vidić.
Vidić, 30, joined Manchester United back in January 2006 from Russian side Spartak Moscow for a fee worth around £7 million and has gone on to become one of the worlds best centre backs under Ferguson's guidance.
Initially the Serbian international took time to settle in England but he has become a key member of the defence at Old Trafford, striking up a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the centre of the United defence. Vidić has won four Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League crown, one FIFA Club World Cup, three Capital One Cups and four FA Community Shields at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.
He was capped 56 times by Serbia and retired from international football back in October 2011.
Vidić has two years remaining on his £90,000 a week contract at Old Trafford.

PSG superstar David Beckham has labelled Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as the greatest manager in the history of football following the Scots announcement that he's retiring.
Retiring Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been labelled as the greatest manager in the history of football by former United midfielder David Beckham. The midfielder made 394 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United and picked up six Premier League titles under Ferguson.
"Sir Alex Ferguson is the greatest manager football has ever seen and his achievements speak for themselves. Not only was he a great manager but he was also a great person," said Beckham.
"He is responsible for my career, he was a father figure for me from the very first day I came to the club and everything I've achieved in football is directly linked to Sir Alex. I can never repay what he's done for me and I hope he knows that," added the 37 year old.
The former England captain came through the youth system at Manchester United alongside the likes of Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt. He was an integral part of the United side that won the famous treble in 1999 and took both the corners in stoppage time at the Nou Camp that led to goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær against Bayern Munich.
Beckham, 37, now plays in Ligue 1 for PSG after signing a one year deal with the French club.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson following the announcement that the legendary Manchester United manager is retiring with immediate effect.
Arsène Wenger has thanked Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for his services to football.
The Manchester United boss has decided to retire with immediate effect. The 70 year old brings to an end an association at Old Trafford that has lasted for over 25 years and has brought with it 12 Premier League titles.
The pair were bitter rivals when the Gunners were directly challenging United for the Premier League crown, although tensions have decreased in recent years as Arsenal have struggled to challenge at the very top.
"Sir Alex Ferguson was one of a kind and nobody will ever achieve what he's achieved," said Wenger.
"Throughout our rivalry I've always maintained a great deal of respect for Sir Alex and have learned a lot from my encounters with him. His passion, hardworking nature, will to win and unrelenting pursuit of success is admirable. Nobody could ever have imagined when he took over that he would make Manchester United one of the biggest clubs in the world and football won't be the same without him," added the Arsenal manager.
Wenger, 62, is now the longest serving manager in British football after Ferguson's retirement.
He has been at Arsenal since September 1996.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has announced his immediate retirement from football following 25 years at Old Trafford which seen the Red Devils win 37 trophies which included 12 Premier League titles.
Sir Alex Ferguson has called time on his glittering career at Old Trafford today by announcing his retirement.
The Scot, 70, has been at Old Trafford for more than 25 years and in that time has won an astonishing 37 trophies. That haul included 12 Premier League titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns and five FA Cups.
Ferguson leaves as the most successful manager in the history of British football and famously won the treble in 1999 as his Manchester United side won the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, the last of which was won in dramatic fashion against Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp courtesy of two stoppage time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
It's believed Ferguson decided to step down after his side narrowly missed out on their 20th Premier League title on goal difference on the final day of last season as Sergio Agüero scored an injury time winner against QPR at the Etihad Stadium to secure Manchester City's first league title in 44 years.
Sources inside the club indicated that a successor to Ferguson will be appointed within two weeks.
The early favourites to take over from Ferguson are José Mourinho and David Moyes.

Honestly at this point in time I don't think we'll win the league, but I don't think we'll be very far off the pace. Personally I'd give Moyes about three years to see what he can do and after that look elsewhere if we're not winning anything. I agree the squad we have at the moment might not be as good as squads we've had in the past but some of the talent in the squad at the moment are very young.

I mean with Mourinho coming back he's inheriting a new squad and would depend on how things go there, although you'd expect as per usual with Mourinho he'll do very well. As for City I don't know if Mancini will still be around and if he is then it depends on how well he's able to strengthen. All I know is next season should be an absolute belter, I can't wait. I guess what I'm trying to say is potentially we could have three new managers at United, Chelsea and City, it'll be very interesting.
