LEICESTER CITY 0-2 LIVERPOOL: Owen delighted with Sturridge impact
14 August 2016 | Football
Liverpool manager Michael Owen has heaped praise of Daniel Sturridge after his brace helped Liverpool win 2-0 win at King Power yesterday.
The striker scored his first goal after only eighteen minutes in what was a tough opening day fixture against last seasons surprise package as the Foxes finished fifth, Sturridge's second goal arrived with just four minutes remaining when he smashed home a Roberto Firmino pass.
But the Liverpool forward knows he needs to keep his feet on the ground as it's potentially going to be a long season for the Reds but the England hit man is 'determined' to help Liverpool get back amongst Europe's elite.
"Qualifying for the Champions League is a must for the (great) club" Sturridge told BBC Sport "but we're not stupid, everyone knows it's going to be tough to achieve as there's others (Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham) who would also love to qualify for Europe's elite competition (Champions League) so it won't be as easy as we wish
To achieve this goal, we need to keep our feet on the ground, play as a group and try and avoid injuries to key players."
Michael Owen also praised the impact of his front man:
"When I arrived at the club around two months ago, I took a look at the squad and decided I was going to play (Daniel) as a lone striker but I did promise him that he'd have plenty of support from our attacking wingers and so far it's worked but we've only played one game.
"Before kick off I had changed the 'style' of play as I felt playing on the counter attack wouldn't have worked against Leicester's pace, the change worked."
Liverpool welcome Manchester City for their second Premier League game of the season on Saturday, kick off at Anfield is at 3pm.

Daniel Sturridge's brace saw Liverpool begin the 2016/17 campaign with victory after a tough 2-0 win at Leicester.
The England international striker broke the deadlock after eighteen minutes when he tapped home after Kasper Schmeichel could only parry a Philippe Coutinho effort while his second came on the end of an excellent Liverpool counter attack - Roberto Firmino played a pinpoint pass to Sturridge who found himself in space before smashing the ball past the Foxes shot stopper.
Leicester had done the double over Liverpool last season - coming from behind to win 3-1 at Anfield and winning 2-1 at King Power - so this victory is deemed an instant improvement but they also need to build on this victory and welcome Manchester City to Anfield next Saturday for their second Premier League game of the season.
It was an entertaining game as their was thirty five attempts overall with sixteen of them being on target - Leicester having six of them and Liverpool ten but it was Sturridge's brace which proved the difference while City's lone striker, Jamie Vardy had a frustrating afternoon.
Elsewhere on the opening day, reigning champions Arsenal had a frustrating start to their title defence as they were held to a 0-0 draw away to Cardiff City despite dominating large parts of the game - last season runners-up Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Teams:
Leicester: Schmeichel, Peruzzi, Morgan, Huth (van Beek 71), Fuchs, Mahrez, Drinkwater, Fellaini (Kante 66), Albrighton, Praet (Kiyotake 66), Vardy
Subs not used: Hamer, Seferovic, Simpson, Schlupp
Yellow cards: Gino Peruzzi, Riyad Mahrez, Marc Albrighton, Jamie Vardy
Liverpool: Donnarumma, Clyne, Sakho, Lovern, Moreno, Allen (Brannagan 59), Henderson, Lallana (Ibe 71), Firmino, Coutinho, Sturridge
Subs not used: Mignolet, Matip, Lucas, Benteke, Smith
Yellow cards: Nathaniel Clyne, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovern
Goals: Daniel Sturridge (18 + 86)
Man of the Match: Daniel Sturridge 8.8

Like I said to Dan @khyle saywell, I had him previously when I was managing Real Madrid so I know what he's like and I'm hoping he'll become a star for us over the years. He'll probably be Italy's #1 in around three/four years in real life.
Cheers @Jonas, decided to go 'old school' after talking to @Dan on Steam who is doing the same with the England national team(s).
MATCH PREVIEW: Leicester City v Liverpool
12 August 2016 | Football
Date: Saturday, 13 August 2016
Venue: King Power Stadium, Leicester
Competition: Premier League
Kickoff: 15:00 GMT
Last season's surprise package Leicester have no injury or suspension problems for their Premier League opener against Liverpool at King Power and could give a full debut to summer signings Sven van Beek and Dennis Praet while the other two additions Marouane Fellaini and Hiroshi Kiyotake could also make debuts.
Meanwhile Liverpool are expected to give a Premier League debut to seventeen year old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma but Liverpool's other summer signing Joel Matip will start on the bench. Jon Flanagan (twisted knee) and Andre Wisdom (strained wrist) are both out injured while Emre Can is on international duty for the German U23 side. Lazar Markovic isn't one hundred percent fit and won't be risked.
Squads:
Leicester City squad: Schmeichel, Hamer, Simpson, van Beek, Morgan, Peruzzi, Fuchs, Schlupp, Albrighton, Mahrez, Kante, Praet, James, Drinkwater, Fellaini, Lawerence, Seferovic, Vardy
Liverpool squad: Mignolet, Donnarumma, Lovern, Sakho, Matip, Clyne, Smith, Moreno, Lucas, Henderson, Allen, Lallana, Ibe, Coutinho, Firmino, Brannagan, Sturridge, Benteke
Last season:
The Foxes done the double over Liverpool last season under Jurgen Klopp's management as they came from behind to secure victory at Anfield. Philippe Coutinho scored after fourteen minutes but three Leicester goals in the space of sixteen second half minutes from Shinji Okazaki, N'Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy gave Leicester victory on Merseyside.
Leicester also came from behind to win the fixture at King Power as two goals in the final twenty minutes from Shinji Okazaki and Jamie Vardy cancelled out Liverpool's opener on fifty four minutes which was scored by Roberto Firmino.
Danger men:
Liverpool will need to cope with the pace of the Foxes front man Jamie Vardy who bagged 27 Premier League goals last season to help fire Leicester into the Europa League and they'll go straight into the group stages after finishing the campaign in fifth place. Both wingers (Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton) are dangerous and could easily fire in goals as well as the England international, Vardy.
On the other side, Leicester will need to watch last seasons top goal scorer Roberto Firmino as he'll be a danger to City's back line while Daniel Sturridge, who had a dismal season last time out (4 goals in 18 appearances) is expected to lead the attack. Liverpool have danger all over the park with both full backs expected to bomb up the wings while Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho could also fire in assists/goals as well.

GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA: Liverpool capture 17-year-old star
11 June 2016 | Football
Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign A.C. Milan's seventeen year old shot stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma
Donnarumma, who came through the A.C. Milan youth team and it's being reported he's agreed a three-year deal to move to Anfield when the transfer window opens at the beginning of July, it's unknown whether Liverpool will be loaning the shot stopper out on-loan for the season to get experience at another top club or whether he'll be first choice.
He hasn't made a first team appearance for the Rossenari yet but did make eight 'non-competitive' appearances for the club.
"My client (Gianluigi Donnarumma) is delighted at joining such an illustrious football club" stated Donnarumma's agent Maurizio Lenzo "he knows about the club, their history and the loyal fan base. He's excited at the possibility of being at something special under the new manager."
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Michael Owen had his say on the new signing:
"Despite only being seventeen, he's a solid 'keeper who'll only scarily get better with experience - Donnarumma has got all the stats in the correct place to be a first choice already but we don't rush someone like young into the first team. The only two stats that need work on is his anticipation and his decision making but that'll come with experience and training."

Hey! Because four best third placed teams got through, it meant Northern Ireland progressed to the last sixteen.
But yeah I digress, this competition has been a load of shite with so many boring games especially the forgettable one last night between Croatia and Portugal which managed to outdo the crapness of Germany/Poland. I'd actually rather re-watch some games from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, at least their was LOADS more entertaining games.

MICHAEL OWEN: I'm living the dream
9 June 2016 | Football
New Liverpool manager Michael Owen has spoken for the first time, four days after being announced as the new manager of English Premier League side Liverpool.
And the thirty six year old former England international was left speechless when the club American owner John Henry offered him the chance to take the post ahead of more experienced managers who are currently unemployed - the likes of Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini with the Chilean announcing he was leaving the Etihad earlier in the campaign.
Of course Michael will evaluate his squad before making wholesale changes.
"It's a dream come true" Owen told Liverpool's official website "to say I'm 'living the dream' is an understatement as I've always wanted to return to Anfield in some capacity after my retirement from professional football.
"If I can be a success here, I'm sure the Liverpool fans will forgive me for playing for Manchester United (jokes)
"I've got an idea on how I'm going to play and the style I'm going to use for this great club, whether it'll work or not remains to be seen - I'll perhaps organise some more preseason friendlies against Europe's elite and check how the tactic fares and make changes when need be - or I'll stick."
It's being reported that new manager will need to deal with some unhappy players in his camp from the get go with Dejan Lovern and Adam Lallana complaining about lack of first team football from the Klopp days while Roberto Firmino wants to leave for Continental football.
"Everyone will begin with a clean slate, everyone will be given a chance to prove themselves before I decide whether to make changes or not."
Liverpool begin their preseason preparations with a trip to Welsh side Rhyl in 40-odd days.

BREAKING NEWS: Liverpool announce new manager
5 June 2016 | Football
Liverpool have today shocked the world by appointing former striker Michael Owen as their new manager
The former England international, 36, has penned an initial three year deal and will take charge when the team returns for preseason at the beginning of July and that's when he's expected to evaluate his squad once for an all.
As part of his contract Michael Owen has had to agree to four philosophies - play possession football, sign young players for the first team, develop players using the clubs youth system and they're also expected to play attacking football while no board requests were agreed.
Michael Owen previously played for Liverpool between the 1996 and 2004 in which he scored one hundred and eighteen domestic league goals in two hundred and sixteen appearances before then Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez sold him to Spanish giants Real Madrid for £8m in which he made thirty six appearances and scored thirteen goals.
His time at the Bernabéu lasted just one season as Owen returned to the English Premier League when Newcastle broke their transfer record (£16.8m) to sign him, despite being injured a few times, he still bagged twenty six goals in seventy one appearances but when Newcastle were relegated, Michael Owen moved to Liverpool's fierce rivals Manchester United on a free transfer and he's end his career at Stoke.
Michael would be quite prolific at international level for England, bagging forty goals in eighty nine caps and one of his most notable goals came against Argentina at France 1998 but the game was overshadowed when his England team mate David Beckham was shown a straight red card after kicking out at Diego Simone but the striker also scored other important goals at international level.

Liverpool sack Jurgen Klopp after just one season at the club
17 May 2016 | Football
Liverpool have sacked first team manager Jurgen Klopp after just one season at Anfield
The former Borussia Dortmund manager had to endure a tough season on Merseyside and Roberto Firmino's thirteen Premier League goals couldn't stop the club finishing in a disappointing eighth place finish which meant they'd be no European football next season.
Born in Stuttgart, Klopp replaced the sacked Brendan Rodgers but couldn't help Liverpool get silverware even though he had won many trophies, including back-to-back Bundesliga trophies when at Dortmund and was even runners-up in the Champions League final with the German giants just three years ago - unfortunately he wasn't given much time to have success at Anfield.
In domestic competitions this season, Liverpool crashed out of the Capital One Cup in the third round (the first hurdle for them), going down 2-1 at Selhurst Park to Crystal Palace while they had no success in the FA Cup too, going down 2-0 away to Watford in the fourth round replay in what was a dismal performance.
It wasn't much better in Europe either for Jurgen as Liverpool lost to Spanish side Villarreal in the first knockout round of the Europa League as they won the first leg 1-0 at Anfield but the trip to El Madrigal turned out to be horrible as the Spaniard's won 4-1 to progress - I'm sure Liverpool were expected to get further in the competition than they did.
Speculation on who Klopp's successor will be is yet to be known but it's believed that they want a replacement in before the European Championships begin on June 10.

But as nice as it is signing midfielders, I feel the club still needs another central defender since Danny Wilson was suspect in the Championship, Dominic Ball has gone back his parent club, Rob Kiernan is decent enough and Clint Hill is 37 - wouldn't mind trying to get Ball back on another season loan to see how he fares in the top flight.

Fair play lad. I don't think I'd be able to enjoy a career like that without getting frustrated.
I had a save going with Real Madrid so I could 'splash the cash' but as soon as I started to dominate the domestic league - six La Liga titles in a row - I ended up getting bored and deleted the save but now I can't get into a career and feel a break might help. During my eight or so years in charge I won the La Liga title seven times, three(?) Champions League trophies (and was in four consecutive finals), won the Club World Cup, Spanish Super Cup numerous occasions, the Spanish Cup numerous occasions and the European Super Cup like once or something.
I then took over my first national team job, which was Italy but ended up getting the sack after a poor European Championship campaign but then the France job became available after that tournament and I had more success as I guided the nation to World Cup success and also won that Nations League thingy but that one's irrelevant. It was a fun career while it lasted and apart from Bangor, it was the longest career I had going on FM16.
