With Gerrard playing a deeper role we don't need Carrick there as well. I'd be more open to the idea of having Henderson in there than Carrick - I just want to see us have some energy and take a bit of a risk rather than going with two deep lying central midfielders.

I think it will largely depend on the opposition on who partners Gerrard, there's a case for both Henderson and Carrick, respectively. Just because Gerrard lines up in a deeper role won't completely curb his natural instincts to drift forward at times. While not a bad thing, it could be a weakness to exploit depending on who his central partner is. Henderson also pushes forward, so having both Gerrard and Henderson together could at times mean both get caught forward, leaving little protection for the defence. Carrick with Gerrard would provide the greater balance, given Carrick isn't one that looks to get forward and thus will naturally provide that extra coverage for those times Gerrard pushes further afield.

I don't think you can really have a set combination to go with.

Baines and Shaw are the future. No point taking Ashley Cole for him to be rinsed by Suarez and all the pundits to be like, 'who saw that coming?'

Just because they're the future doesn't make them the right fit for now. I mean, that's effectively going to the world cup with a defeatist attitude already. You go there to win, or at least do well- particularly for a nation like England. Otherwise you may as well overlook anyone that isn't under 30.

You're also suggesting Baines and Shaw have the quality and experience to deal with the sort of players they'll face, in the high level situations that will be had? Baines is a little more understandable, given he has 20 odd caps, but Shaw is still very much a raw player. Neither have really faced the sort of quality A.Cole has on any consistent basis. Naturally, Cole may not start. But surely he's still worth a place in the squad simply for the experience and leadership he'd provide down back, no?

Has Cole even played this season?

Not sure if serious?

He has, however the form of Dave has been outstanding since he slotted in at left back and the sole reason he's held his place in the team. Even Mourinho has said this much.

Do people think A.Cole should be going to Brazil? Just looking at the above squad list and the defence, there is so little top level expierence to call upon. Going with Baines and Shaw as the two left backs could be a very risky move in an already suspect looking defence.

People saying Sturridge only showed his true ability when he got to Liverpool need to remember that when he had that loan spell at Bolton he also had a good record (8 in 12) so basically anytime he's been used as a striker he's shown what he can do, it just seems every manager at Chelsea misused him quite badly

Sturridge as a lone striker doesn't really work, this is the main reason why he was always used out wide by every manager that had him at Chelsea. He's average in the air, lacks the work rate and team work to have excelled as a lone striker- this is still shown with his Liverpool move, as Suarez does most of the hard graft. However, in a system that employs two strikers that can interchange together it plays more to his strengths. He's always been a good finisher though.

Will be interesting to see how well he does for England though without Suarez around him, and within a system that won't be as free-flowing at what Rodgers likes to employ.

Why do that if you weren't highlighting it in a bad light though?

It makes no sense at all.

I wasn't highlighting it in any light ffs. I merely posted the bloody breakdown of what Rooney will be paid as it was interesting to see, without any comment passed.

Again, people on here are too fucking trigger happy at times and jump the boat on anything.

For the record. I couldn't give a shit what United pay Rooney. Do I think he's worth it? Not at all. Do I think Rooney has made United look a little silly? Absolutely. That's about the extent of it.

I've not played FM for a couple of years and don't have the time or the motivation to play through it properly these days with how involved it has become. Classic Mode is naturally an alternative, however, just how basic is it? And has anyone here played or is currently playing through a career in Classic Mode? If so, thoughts?

You were highlighting his new deal as if it were an exaggerated price to pay as if your own club didn't waste 50m on Torres with 150k a week being spunked on him.

I'd take paying Rooney 300k a week over some of the dross Chelsea have on stupid money.

No I wasn't. I merely posted up what he's costing United to keep him, which was listed on the Daily Mail site. Was actually nothing more than that. Good to see people are eager to jump the gun though.

Chelsea don't need a quality forward. Could stick Turnbull up front and still win the league next year

A quality striker will provide that edge that is currently lacking. With Turnbull no longer at the club it makes this an even more pressing issue to address in the summer.

As for Vidal, I think it's a no go anyway, but the club have been talking about these players (or as close as we will get to talking about players) in the hope or expectation that Rooney would stay. Rooney staying does not necessarily hinder that pursuit, arguably it may enhance it, especially if we drop out of the Champion's League, because he's a very highly rated player in Europe, and its going to be far easier to convince players of the calibre we want that this season has been a blip if players aren't fleeing.

Vidal isn't going to happen. He signed a new deal until 2017 in December last year. And there's possible talks that Juve are looking to extend that for another year already. Pogba will most likely re-sign also, he'd be stupid to leave just yet. While Marchisio wants to commit his future long-term to the club, which will probably happen also. All the talk about these sorts of players is just that, talk. You'd like to think Rooney wouldn't that gullible in thinking they'd realistically be signed. That said, United need to remain in the Champions League, if they don't it will be hard to convince the type of players required to join given the performances this season, and those who've got intentions on leaving.

Why are you so against playing Mata on the wing?

And Ninja's right about the obsession with tactics being arbitrary. Often the tactical lineups on MOTD seem to be decided by how progressive a manager is perceived to be. The 'Classic English 4-4-2' normally has a big man, a little man and two wingers. Could easily be describing the current 4-2-3-1.

Mata isn't a winger, that's the issue. His best games always came from him playing through the middle.

With the sort of system Moyes is trying to use, Mata isn't the solution. While he can obviously play wide, he'll always favour drifting back inside. He's not a big crosser of the ball and he doesn't have the pace to beat the fullback and get in behind. His defensive weak points will also be exposed more if he's played in a more traditional 4-4-2 role. All in all, if Moyes wanted a winger so badly, he definitely purchased the wrong player.

Part of me tends to think it was a slight panic buy with the uncertainly that's surrounded Rooney's future. If Rooney goes, Mata slots straight in.

There's some talk that Chelsea will sell both Lukaku and Ba to help fund a move for Cavani in the summer, along with a few other players out on loan.

Would love to see a quality forward join, though I'm also torn between wanting to keep Lukaku also. I still think he deserves a decent crack before he's moved on. Definitely can't do any worse than what we've got so far.

*Whilst they were suffering an injury crisis that saw their best central midfielder and one of the best players in the league to miss the game and resulted in a 33 year-old centre-back playing in midfield.

Chelsea played well and Mourinho had a good game but his 'tactical genius' has been vastly overstated in that game.

"Injury crisis". Missing two players is hardly considered a "crisis".

It was also Pellegrini's choice to play Demichelis in midfield. He had other options like Milner and Rodwell fit and in the squad to pick from. Not to mention it's a position Demichelis had also played before. And if you really want to get picky, Chelsea had Luiz in midfield too, also a central defender.

Not that it really matters at the end of the day, at the time, Chelsea beat the most dominate side the in the league who were previously unstoppable. Hence the praise involved.

Anyway, Man City were far and away the better side this evening. Chelsea looked tired and were very sloppy with possession. Lacked any sort of notion of an idea going forward and I think Mourinho got it completely wrong with his line up. We've put too many miles into the legs of Hazard, Oscar and Willian and it's beginning to show. We also definitely miss the leadership of Terry down back. All in all, all credit goes to City.

Just seemed to me that as usual Mourinho spits his dummy out when he doesn't like something he hears or see's. He's already cried about what City spend even though he did exactly the same to get success at Chelsea, then of course there was the West Ham game where he once again forgot that he's played exactly the same way many times before against clubs when he first took charge of Chelsea.

He bores me to death now and is only ever interested in trying to make himself look better than everyone else, which is what he's been doing by saying how his side are not contenders for the title despite them having an almost equally good a squad as Man City, blokes a prick.

You're clearly missing the entire point of what Mourinho does. He's basically taken all the talk about Chelsea being title challengers and has deflected it back on to himself and also onto the likes of City, etc. That's classic Mourinho and how he works. The whole point of what he does is to kill the title talk of the club and pressures that come with that, allowing the players to simply focus on what's on hand. Inside the club they'll be confident they can win the title, but in the public eye all the talk has been about this season being the stepping stone and second being a good finish, given just how far the club were behind the leaders last season.

If City don't win the title this year the pressure and media focus had will be intensely crazy. If Chelsea don't win, it was never the goal.

It's basically that simple.

Unprofessional, though. He needs to grow up.

You can kinda understand his frustration though. Given the situation United have found themselves in this season for him to not get a decent crack would be frustrating, particularly given the injuries and how poor some have performed.

No ones trying to claim he's a gifted defender, but he's clearly capable of doing his bit. His presence in the team for every single one of the games against Barcelona and Bayern Munich (the Barca games in particular, where he played from the right) are clear indications that he's not the defensive liability that the poster I was responding to believed him to be.

I'm not trying to insinuate Mourinho was wrong, I perfectly understand his decision making process I just think in making that decision a pretty distorted view has been created by his hordes of supporters.

As for the last point, thats fair enough, but again, thats Moyes to blame more than anyone. If he wanted to play football in the way we have been we should have got Andy Carroll and Peter Crouch in in January, not an actual footballer like Mata.

Bobber basically hit the nail on the head with his response. In saying that.

As much as I love Mata, quite often it was like defending with 10 men in games where possession wasn't being dominated. He was also aided in having two fullbacks (depending which side he'd pop up on), that were more defensively orientated. Once you remove the freedom Mata was previously given under RDM and Rafa and he's required to fit within a structure, his defensive weaknesses stand out. More so if your fullbacks are encouraged forward. As much as he tried to put in some defensive work he simply wasn't able to deliver. He can't tackle, he's too lightweight and not athletic enough to press or cover ground. Give him the ball in the attacking half and he'll create you something, there isn't a doubt about that. It shows when he's used through the middle. However, his defensive game has always been an issue of his, well before Mourinho even returned. The system in place previously saw the striker having to put in more of a defensive shift as Mata remained forward. This has all become something that has been highlighted more this season with the change in system and responsibilities placed upon the attacking three behind the striker to work hard defensively too.

It's also a large part of why he also struggles to break into the Spanish NT. The players ahead of him are still required to do defensive work and excel more in it than what Juan does. What I find odd in him leaving with focus on the World Cup. Even at Chelsea during his last two seasons he was playing week in week out at a high level and still only finding himself on the bench. Going to United isn't really going to do much more than ensure he gets a ticket on the plane. Best of luck to him nonetheless.

See I think this is an unfair stick to beat Moyes with.

Mata was always going to be playing from wide for us, but even your heat map shows he's not playing 'wide right'. His clear tendency is to drift inside, just analysis that for a second, he has as many touches (I assume thats touches its measuring) in central midfield as he does close to the byline, and even then I imagine the vast majority of those were touches coming back from taking corners.

Although it obviously favours the right side it's clear that he's drifting all across that front line, hence the large heat spot on the left flank and the fact that the heat off the right comes inside.

This, to be fair to Moyes is a pretty progressive position and this is despite the fact that our performance was entirely based upon players getting to the byline and putting in crosses, something which Mata clearly was not doing .

Another manager with the front 4 of Rooney, RVP, Januzaj and Mata would use them in similar ways. There's a really exciting prospect of some excellent combinations with Rafael and Evra (or a competent left back in the summer) providing the width thats needed. Unfortunately, Moyes seems determined to play one of the shittest brands of football imaginable with them.

Playing Mata out wide doesn't benefit United nor Mata though. Moyes just spunked near £40m on a no.10 simply only to shove him on the wing, despite the fact he drifts inside on a regular basis. There's a reason why Mata wasn't being selected for Chelsea this season and United are actually highlighting these exact weaknesses in Mata's game. United have attacking fullbacks, having Mata out wide will allow space for them but it also leaves the fullbacks exposed because Mata offers no defensive protection. Mata needs to play through the middle to not only get the best from him personally, but to also help cover his weaknesses on the defensive side of his game. At the end of the day he wasn't the right player for United at all. It's about the last area United needed to strengthen when it comes to midfield. His signing isn't going to change anything, which we're already seeing as United's problems are in other areas.

What Moyes has gone and done is made his life a lot harder now because he now must find a way to fit Rooney, RvP, Mata and Januzaj into the one side and maintain a balance. Rooney loves to drop need and is better suited just behind a main striker, this takes away any space that would be occupied by Mata if he was to be played through the middle, hence he's pushed wide. This then means Januzaj (arguably the only positive for United this season) is pushed to bench on a more regular basis with Young more likely to start. This then highlights the point made before on Mata's weaknesses defensively, which teams will expose.

Not surprised to be honest, we've struggled against Newcastle recently. I kinda had a feeling Chelsea would lose this one.

Also think Mourinho should have removed Oscar and not Mata.

Not to be though, can only hope the November curse doesn't strike again and a few other games go our way.
