Earth Trip

With the full release of Football Manager 2020, I've decided to start my annual journeyman save. This year I'll be starting in Europe, with the fifteen lowest playable leagues from the FIFA World Rankings and the top five big leagues. I haven't played in Europe much personally so will start there, but I plan to move around the globe.

Update 001: Introduction & Job Search

Welcome! I appreciate you giving time to read this. I'm taking a break from my FC Cincinnati beta save, though will return to it at some point, as I'm excited to start a journeyman save; which is always my favourite career to do. I'm starting in Europe, which I've previously initially ignored in my more recent journeymans, but I will very likely globe-trot at a later date. No aims to this, just to have fun.

All of the set-up is the usual journeyman stuff, with no coaching badges or previous experience and the attributes are the lowest that the game allowed. I've loaded the top five European leagues, along with the fifteen bottom playable leagues from the FIFA World Rankings. This includes Gibraltar, as I've downloaded the Sports Interactive add-on via the Steam workshop. You can see all this below, along with my manager profile - where I have created an alias. I'll be playing as Marko Kovač, a Croatian born in Zagreb in 1980. No reasoning behind this, just something different.

The Job Search:

Let's move on to the job search, which didn't last all that long in truth. My hope was to secure a job in Gibraltar, which is at the bottom of the (playable) football world. I immediately hit 'apply for all jobs', with the first job interview arriving from Irish second tier club Cobh Ramblers. I wasn't all that interested in heading to the Republic of Ireland though took the interview anyway, just in case. They eventually offered me the job, which I delayed for one week.

Interviews followed with Baranovichi (Belarus), Afturelding (Iceland), Magni (Iceland), NFK (Belarus), Lynx (Gibraltar) and Hapoel Nof HaGalil (Israel). None of which offered me a job.

I was offered a crapton of U23 international jobs, which are still far too easy to secure in Football Manager - I was never taking one of them anyway.

Braintree Town (England) and Hound Dogs (Gibraltar) were next to offer interviews, before Lisburn Distillery (Northern Ireland) and Oxford City (England) also came in. I, of course, headed off to all of them, though only the Hound Dogs job took my interest.

Hound Dogs returned with a job offer. I, despite some huge reservations which I'll mention shortly, accepted their offer to secure my intention of visiting Gibraltar.

Here I am then. I really have chosen to start at the very bottom of the footballing world, with Hound Dogs sat in Gibraltar's Intermediate League - the newly-formed second division of their pyramid. They are the only club that isn't an Under-23 outfit, as the division was created to help out the top division teams - with Hound Dogs only featuring after receiving special dispensation to play in it from the GFA.

There is no promotion or relegation.

The squad is a mess, with only two non-greyed out players! No other staff either. Other information, including squad dynamics, can be viewed below.

The board expectation is literally to finish bottom, so this is going to be fun. It will most likely end with failure, but I wanted the biggest of challenges to start with - so anything else I achieve will taste even more sweeter.

Despite all of that, I can't wait to get started! I do love a journeyman save.

Update:
I have had to resign as manager of Hound Dogs. The reason? Crash dumps. It was seemingly caused by the Gibraltar add-on, as I had two consecutive crashes at exactly the same time in-game. I then, originally as a test, resigned and removed the league and it has allowed me to travel past the crash dump time - so that, hopefully, fixes that issue.

That sucks, as I was looking forward to managing in Gibraltar. The save continues though, I thought about starting a fresh save but I've decided to keep with this. We'll just put this early exit from Hound Dogs down to "creative differences" with chairman Matthew Martin.

Unfortunately, it hasn't. Into January 2023 and not even had one single job interview; despite 15 of the 19 leagues loaded being low ranked ones like Belarus, Slovenia, Finland etc. I'm going to a create a new save file and start again. Thankfully this has happened early on, before I've had a chance to get into the save.

Maybe get that reported on the SI forums mate, may just be a bug, surely those leagues would give you an interview? Even another job in Gibraltar should do

Indeed, I have done so. I removed the Gibraltar add-on at end of the first season due to the bug, though apparently the top division was fine - just the Hound Dogs one was bugged out.

Let's try this again! After not one, but two bugs in the last save in its embryonic stage, I've had to reset and start a new one. Last time out I got a job with Hound Dogs in Gibraltar, in what was to be a bugged add-on which forced me to resign. Then after that, I holidayed whilst applying for a new job but didn't receive a single interview in almost four (4!) years. Very frustrating, but at least it was extremely early on and not after I had achieved any success.

For this new save, everything is as it was last time - with the exception, of course, of the problematic Gibraltar database. Again, no aims or goals for this (probable) journeyman save - I just want to have fun. I could move clubs every few months, or I could even stay at a club for 10+ years... who knows! They all offered job interviews, which I attended. Cobh were first to offer me a job, but I delayed them to see what else would arrive. Lisburn Distillery have an interesting recent - and historic - history. It was only back in 2009-10 that the club participated in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds versus Georgian outfit Zestafoni. They placed 4th in the season prior, but have since found difficult times which culminated with relegation in 2012-13 to the Championship. After three more campaigns battling near the bottom there, they suffered a second relegation in 2015-16 to the Premier Intermediate League - where they play today.

They were founded back in 1880, they have six top-flight titles to their name and twelve Irish Cups in their cabinet; along with a whole host of other various competitions, including the County Antrim Shield (14) and Intermediate Cup (3). Their last trophy won was the 2010-11 Irish League Cup.

Our expectation for this season is to reach the play-offs, whilst reaching the fifth round of the Irish Cup. None of the remaining four competitions are deemed all that important. The squad list, dynamics and fixture list can be viewed below.

I've began my tenure as manager of Northern Irish third tier side Lisburn Distillery, having just completed the pre-season portion of the campaign. We faced five friendlies, two of which were against teams from the higher divisions (Dungannon Swifts & Knockbreda) whilst the other three were meetings with lower league outfits (St. James Swifts, Fivemiletown United & Portaferry Rovers).

I haven't made any signings just yet, though one youth team player did depart. I do have one or two signings planned, but overall I expect to keep trust in the current lot of players; with some additional players, all over 22, who were chilling down with the reserves. I will be adding a few staff members, given we only have two others at the moment.

After a decent pre-season schedule, I headed into the competitive period of my time as Lisburn Distillery's new manager in Northern Ireland's third division. I'm happy enough with our start. We sit 2nd, two points off 100%s Tobermore United - title favourites Bangor sit a place and a point behind us in 3rd, despite their win over us. We even had a real treat in beating a club two divisions higher.

I started my career in the Northern Irish third tier with Lisburn Distillery with three victories from four games in August, which including a surprise League Cup win over top-flight Crusaders. We did lose to Bangor in league action, but gained six points over Banbridge Town and Limavady United.

We head into October still in 2nd, two points off Tobermore United after missing the chance to go level on points. Bangor remain in 3rd but, like Tobermore, have a game in hand on us. Cup-wise we're still in the County Antrim Shield and League Cup, but face no more action in the Steel & Sons Cup sadly. The Irish Cup and Intermediate Cup are yet to get underway, though the latter will do so next month.

Cup football would take centre stage this month, as we were given three games across three different competitions to supplement our usual Premier Intermediate League commitments. That form looks worse than it actually is, given the two defeats were narrow cup losses versus higher tiered opponents and the draw was a good point away to a title rival. The two wins were dominant in terms of goals. Therefore, I'm still very pleased with how our season is going at the moment.

As you can see above, we've had two players depart the club. Back-up goalkeeper Pat Saunders and back-up central midfielder Aaron Harris were given free transfers, neither has featured much (at all in Saunders' case) and wanted out so I released them from their non-contract deals. They won't be missed, but I wish them the best.

November would be a little light on action, with just two competitive matches to be played towards the end of the month; meaning we had to schedule three friendlies between the 1-16 November. "Heavy defeat away to Bangor. More transfer news. Connor Curry, an unused right-back who had been moaning for a few months, has been released from his non-contract terms, while central midfielder Steven Ferguson has joined the club. We needed depth in his area, so I signed the 36-year old ex-Leeds United academy player on a free transfer - he has experience in the Premiership and Championship of Northern Ireland.

In other news, Neil Jackson has come on board as our new Under-18s coach. Chairman Jim Greer took control of that, I'd usually do everything myself but so far with Lisburn Distillery I've shared responsibility - admittedly unintentionally, I only just realised I wasn't doing press conferences.
